evidence to consider this tragedy and they are not ruling out an international connection in the murder of four of the marines today. we are learning more about the even though we cannot release their reservists. one of the wounded u.s. navy. the names of those skills are not going to be released until the primary next of kin are all notified but we know the name and the age of the gunmen. he is mohammod youssuf abdulazeez. we are learning more about the gunmen by the minute and we will be bringing you all that we do know throughout this hour. at this point mohammod youssuf abdulazeez is believed to have acted alone. he may have been alone, but he was certainly heavily armed and he carried with him numerous weapons as he attacked two military facilities in chattanooga. a senior government official telling fox news that the first shooting was effectively a drive-by in which he fired from his car into a recruiting office in a strip mall. chattanooga police chased him 7 miles to the second location where he fired his weapon, firing on the marines at the naval operations support center. the assault lasted by some say as much as 15 minutes. the police shot and killed him there. the fbi's taking the lead on the investigation of this tragedy. but authorities say that they had absolutely no warning and there's absolutely no intelligence apparently with any indication that mohammod youssuf abdulazeez was about to carry out these attacks today. but he did have an encounter with the police three months ago and we will be telling you about that and much more as we continue our report tonight. joining us now to discuss the shooting today is the major who is an army officer and a criminal defense attorney. it's good to have you with us. >> this senseless tragedy it is already expected to be with some evidence to that effect a lone wolf attack perhaps inspired by the islamic state. what are your thoughts? >> it's very difficult to find any promise or hope or optimism to tragic situations and i'm so we hope that it is a lone wolf attack. i suppose that could be part of a larger terrorist organization but the damage is horrific and we have lost not only for america lives but for her relative american lives. lou: as our cameras move in here at that strip mall recruiting center what's going on? >> you know the recruiting areas are gun free zones. it's incredulous at a moment like this to think that the greens are defenseless against an assailant. and i understand that there is a reason. the reason on the part of the military to style it as such. why is it necessary for us to be a gun free zone? >> if you remember the recruiting office, you are trying to attract people. most recruiters will tell you that they are trained to be less militaristic. and you are going in to speak to a class of high school seniors. if you come off with too much of a militaristic approach you have to connect with people. it's difficult to be inviting and connect with people when someone who might otherwise feel that they are walking into a police state or it so that is a waste of the motivation behind it. lou: do you think that we will be rethinking this outlook? because i have even noticed that we don't have military units in our fourth of july parades anymore. there is an attempt by the most recent estimate .4% of our present active duty. we are setting ourselves up for something like this that is not only tragic but it is perhaps a deafening warning about our future. if we persist with some of these ideas. >> going back to the founding of the nation the founding fathers were very concerned about the idea of, you know, militarizing not only the border but within the united states. the idea that the military was going to be a force in the fights not only here but abroad as well. and that is still very much alive today. >> sure, absolutely, but even if you look at the terms of the reserves or the national guard there are specific laws that dictate when they are under the control of the governor of the vaporware when they are federalized and we have seen this. lou: they are under control of the governor until the president says that he is in charge. >> just come until he keeps the jurisdiction. i know we have had this during one of natural disasters. but when it comes to protecting the security of the actual people in uniform and their inherent right to defend themselves in the right for us to protect the military obviously there is a balance enact the past to take place and you can't have military facilities that are rendered defenseless for any reason. >> there are a couple of things that happened. it we have the bubble operations support center which is for reservist. to coordinate and to support that we have bases all over the country that are secured by private purity farms and not men and women in uniform of the united states military. it is jolting to some of us from an earlier generation to see a base protected by this. and it's a crazy thing that we've got. and so as we look at this this is not the first attack on a recruiting center or the first attack on a military installation. isn't it time for us to start talking about a new way of doing business and given this? >> anytime that we as a country are vulnerable and clearly we are in this day and age the men and women are vulnerable, they are targets or lone wolf fanatics the priority always has to be what can we do and are we doing everything to protect them. >> you are one of those citizen soldiers. part of that great tradition of this country. and i have to tell you as a citizen that i want you armed and i want you to have access to weapons. i don't want you sitting in a recruiting office or a reserve facility to be without the weapons that keep you and your fellow citizens save. it seems to be utterly mindless to persevere in this path in which these four marines died unable to defend themselves. >> government all too often tends to be reactionary instead of proactive. and i don't want to say that you need a tragedy like this you never need and you never want a tragedy like this. but it takes something of this magnitude to get government to change their behavior to revisit the policies and then deal with things like this. and hopefully this will this will bring in change where we focus more on the safety of the men and women in uniform not only when they are broad but when they are on domestic soil. lou: it's good to have you with us. thank you so much. citizen soldier. you know, that is a great title. >> it takes to great titles and combines them. i love it. >> thank you. >> thank you for your service. lou: more breaking news out of colorado. a jury has found james holmes
