Updated 5/27/2021 8:23 PM Coming on the same week as the anniversary of the murder of George Floyd, Elgin City Council members spoke out against racism and discrimination and in support of local police. The statements came in the form of proclamations approved Wednesday night. One recognized implicit bias and called on the city and local organizations to take active stances against discrimination and hatred, while the other honored its police officers and recognized their role in protecting the rights of Elgin residents.
Mayor David Kaptain said he's received multiple requests for the city to speak out, in an official capacity, against discrimination, racism and hatred. Officials decided to research proclamations made in other communities and adapt them into a comprehensive message.
