Early Māori dictionary provides explanations of value

The dictionary provides English meanings for Māori words – but it is vastly more than a simple glossary offering one-on-one meanings. The translations are in many cases followed by quotations exemplifying usage which are drawn from carefully selected sources, chosen as representative of “classical” Māori; that is, of a te reo as free as possible from influences intruding from other languages. The quotations offer testing exercises for the reader (since translations are only infrequently supplied).
Of particular value are entries for particles, providing careful explanations of the various functions of each. Extremely handy, also, is the one-page “Scheme of a Maori Verb” (in the front of the book, near the end of the introductory material) which provides examples of both affirmative and negative forms of the verb
