I think those comparisons are valid well, theres certainly a degree of similarity. Uh, theres yahoo all over again. I think theres one major difference that ive been really struck by. You can think about the anti war protests in the 19 sixtys as being environmental. Went on for several years. Started very peacefully, non violently. And then over several years time escalated to more militancy. These protests of, ive happened so fast and such as compress the matter that move from the kind of peaceful protest to some very militant actions in days, not years. So in that sense, i dont know if its social media or just the pity of modern life, but there is a kind of urgency and quickness to these protests thats quite different than the long environmental protests of students in the 1960. And what do you think at todays students, universities that indeed the federal government might loan from those sixtys protest . Or yeah, thats a question that ive been thinking a lot about and, and been talking to a lot of people about what one thing thats pretty obvious is that if you as a university administrator, move very quickly to bring police or even worst case to bring Violent Police actions against demonstrators you tend to make a difficult situation worse. So administrators have to be very cautious about escalating matters because often theres a backlash. Students who are not interested or just interested, suddenly become angry that their fellow students, their peers, are being treated in such a harsh way. So thats the lesson for administrators. Be careful. Be cautious. Dont do things. You dont have to do for fear that you might escalate things worse for students. I think the other issue has to be very mindful of whats their goals. I think this happened with the anti war protest, certainly in the United States, and the 1960 and early seventys, where students sometimes forgot that the point of the exercise was to convince others that us policy was wrong. That there had to be changes and how the United States handle its international responsibilities. Here too. I sometimes worry that students in their passions are forgetting. Their goal, which i gather, would be to get their universities to divest from supporting israel in any manner whatsoever. And perhaps even more importantly, to change the opinions of americans and certainly american policy makers. So be to be considering what your tactics are and what your long term goals are.
