E. U. Leaders have taken part in a Virtual Summit and improving security following a spate of radical islamist terror attacks in france and austria. The summit was hosted by french president emmanuel ma kroll, who called for a swift and coordinated response. He also denounced what he described as the abuse of europes asylum laws, french president. And while mcconnell told his fellow leaders, the threat of terrorism weighs on all of europe and the fight against islamist extremism. Must be a joint effort to look at all our capitals. All of us who are here together have been affected by terrorism from paris to brussels. Vienna utrecht london, madrid, barcelona copenhagen stop her niece vienna now and so many others is a european reality to which we must respond. One of the victims was beheaded and 2 weeks earlier, a teacher was beheaded in a paris suburb. The attacks in both knees and vienna involved assailants who moved freely between shanklin countries. Prosecutors in germany are treating the stabbing of a man in the eastern city of trust and as an islamist murder. German chancellor Angela Merkel echoed other european leaders in stressing the importance of border controls. As during the, its an urgent is that we know not only who went has, but also who leaves the shang an area. And we must also have this information from those countries which we have visa, free travel with. Thats why the european travel Information System being no 2023 is very important. Not knutson, knuckle insists the security measures ought to bounce a confrontation between islam and christianity. But about society having to confront terrorism and contempt for democracy. On a busy day of international diplomacy, merkel, mccaw spoke both rather spoke to joe biden, for the 1st time in his capacity as u. And i have a number of other calls to return. And so i feel confident that were going to be able to put the mare put america back in the place of respect that it had before. Lets look at some other news stories from around the world. Thank you for today. God bless you, will i 70 words in my heart that i dont know what to say. 3. Ceasefire is the new going to have failed since fighting erupted in september. Many he hopes will finally bring peace to a troubled region. Here in germany as elsewhere, theres been a cautious welcome to news that a vaccine could help spell the end of the pandemic. German drugmaker, beyond tech and us pharma giant pfizer, say trials show that their vaccine is more than 90 percent effective at preventing covert 19 with some reservations. Many people want vaccinations to begin as soon as possible. When human trials of b n t, 160 began earlier this year, no one knew if they would lead to a Coronavirus Vaccine. The reports that this substance is in fact highly effective, have brought new hope. Germanys Research Minister is cautiously optimistic. Has been there for him with an untold im very pleased with naturally encouraged by this beginning and hopefully we will not have any setbacks with vaccines. Youre never sure about that. But these positive initial reports give us a lot of hope. The German Government has put more than 350000000 euros into this research over 40000. People have received doses of the maxine at the same time the approval procedure has been speeded up. Could that mean the drug isnt safe . Oughtnt to say that we have not lowered our standards at all. People can be sure if this drug is approved, that will be according to the usual standard. Were used to here in germany. The surveys suggest 2 thirds of germans are ready to be vaccinated. Thats enough to get coded under control, but not everyone is yet convinced it will work. Ill wait and see, but im not a risk patient. I should vaccinate those who need it 1st and then ill get it. If theres any left. What happened to, of course theyve tested it on people who are relatively young and healthy. How will it affect older people, those with Health Problems . Im not sure yet. Sure. I think i would. Yeah. But i mean it can also like grow into something else. It might not even work in production has already begun in expectation that the new vaccine will get full approval. The European Union says it will order up to 300000000 doses. We have many countries back in lockdown measures. Theres an urgency to have a means to beat the pain. There will be an initial vaccine in the 1st few months of 2021 gives me confidence. Its encouraging. Its a light at the end of the tunnel. This is least for most people, the new vaccine cant come soon enough. Earlier we spoke to dr. Margaret harris from the world health organization, and i asked her how a successful Coronavirus Vaccine would be distributed worldwide. Much of that work is involved in setting up something called the codex to seal it. We have a very big program of getting not just sex scenes, but all the drugs and the little, the tests and Everything Else people need. But part of that is ensuring that all countries will have access to it, and the people who are most in need will get it 1st. And by that i mean, the health care workers, the people who are every day exposed to this farce, every day risk. And of course, theyre also the people who protect all of us when we get ill, they fight for our lives. So remember, were working with all the different groups, developing many, many scenes. And as i said earlier, when looking to having more than one candidate vaccine and some will be more appropriate in different groups and others, you know, some, maybe one dose, one, some maybe 2 doses. And through the kind of accessibility, the good news is the majority of countries around the world has signed up to that and agreed that the rich countries will pay for things like st. But that support the poor countries to also be able to afford it and have it. This is d. W. News from berlin, d w. News africa is up next. Who is medical training . What moves . Who took the people who followed her along the way, admirers and critics alike . How is the worlds most powerful woman shaping her legacy . Joining us from echols lost on this is g. W. News, africa coming up on the program, which the victims a less equal than others is stuck with guys suffered lifelong injuries during a terrorist attack on the u. S. Embassy in nairobi, 22 years ago. But she and many other kenyan survivors have been excluded from the compensation package that has been largely dedicated to american victims. Also on the program. For the fall, kokrajhar was the instrument being told, its not about racial tension. In south africa. Weve got a report from a high school in cape town, thats become the latest flashpoint. Weve been told everything, these people they do their racism. And i can, we, along with hello, im christine, will have your Company Kenyan victims of a bomb attack on the u. S. Embassy in 1980. Have criticised a new compensation deal when al qaeda bombed u. S. Embassies in kenya and tanzania. In august 1998, it was the 1st islamic terror attack targeting the United States on foreign soil. Kenya suffered most of the casualties with 224 People Killed and thousands of others injured in. The capital, nairobi, neighboring sudan provided in direct support for al qaeda and its leader. Osama bin laden, who carried out the attacks. As a result, the u. S. Put sudan on the list of countries that support terrorism and imposed sanctions on the country. That changed last month when sudan agreed to pay 335000000. 00 in compensation to attack victims, employees at the u. S. Embassy, but have a survivor. Mostly kenyans will not be receiving any offer. It has esther remembers that day like it just happened on the 7th of august 1998 at 10. 30 in the morning. She heard the 1st blast when i knew that the whole building was coming down. And that is why i did the preah quickly brought to me because of my getting 3. Then the 2nd blast, its when i was thrown out. And people tell me that i was collected on the pavement. I looked like i had died. So they thought i was dead though severely injured. She survived on that day, almost a mile 10 years. Me. Bombs exploded at u. S. Embassies in nairobi, kenya and dar es salaam, tanzania, the blast scale 224 people, and injured about 5000. Esther was working at the bank right next to the embassy. She was retired on medical grounds at only 42 years old. Nevertheless, she still wanted to work, but was rejected because of medical reasons. I was not the normal woman. There is a woman who used to go to the opiates and was told by my family and if it were not to to be raised, i feel so sad that im not able to you know, to walk home. I probably from then on the former supervisor dependent on Financial Support from her family regularly. She meets up with other survivors of the attack. Michael lost his mother when he was only 2 years old. Douglas lost his eyesight. Theyve also struggled financially. My dad lost his job so it wasnt, it wasnt the money and nothing money for that. So i loved all of us. We could provide for the program through us and even education. At some point, mine is always a problem. Then they heard of the new deal brokered by the u. S. And the Sudanese Government sudan has agreed to pay 335000000. 00 of compensation to the victims of the attacks. In return, the us removed the country from its list of state sponsors of terrorism. Sudan was listed because it holds that al qaeda leader, Osama Bin Laden as a guest of the government. But with the deal only for my us and local embassy employees are to receive compensation. Thats only one percent of the people who were killed or injured. It says, douglas, we feel the american government, us that we africans, beings than americans. But we feel we are just equal human beings like america. And wed be treated just as much of the american citizens now, 22 years later, and still in pain and needs medication to be able to sleep. If she would receive compensation, she says she would be able to pay the looming school fees so that her sons can finally graduate. I feel frustrated, discriminated, hated, because i dont see the difference between an american as does Biggest Health now is that the new us president elect joe biden will reconsider the Compensation Plan and include all survive us. Im now joined by standing lead to my he is annoying representing victims like those youve just been introduced to in our report. He is in nairobi. Welcome to news africa, stanley. You like the people that youre representing suffered injuries on that fateful day in nairobi. 22 years ago. But why do you believe that the United States is liable for what happens to you . Think youre christian, what i can say about the topic are they dont have states, bussy is not lab on their culpability part in the law. Isnt that the public of sudan . What we are saying is that the target, we just, American Embassy was an extension of the United States government. So we feel that there should be no discrimination or distinction between they victims or are you at United States nationalities or kenyans, or employees, or contractors under lock, who are not legal relationship with a embassy. So our point is that victims should be treated the same. Ok, and where are you taking that miss a stand it tell us about way your case is yes, our cases are. You have to go to the american congress. Its appropriate legal suit. Well, we have our principle lawyer was based in the United States in california. So hes going to form what we call a lobby. Its not try to pass the buck shot up who want to lobby the congress of the United States in order. They can allow the provision that will open that window or were opened. It will be for kenyans to as well be compensated and receive justice together with the other victims. Right. What do you believe is your governments role in all of this standing . The kenyan government where i am not are so just to speak for the government. Are told, believe that their government should also maybe take a role. You dont dare to see how it can be able to repress the situation and address the plight of us. So yes, this is a probably too little salt, and i cannot speak for the government of kenya. In south africa, racial tensions have sparked outside a high school in cape town. The school was on high alert today after parents in protest is violent. If they clashed on monday night prison, so were going up also has condemned the clashes and called for an investigation. And the news competition watchdog says the tech giant misused commercial data to outsell traders on its own website. Also coming up, just in time for christmas, the new battle of the consoles can microsofts newest x. Box challenge sonys play station 5 pound will meet the burden in tech workers who have joined together to ensure diversity plays its part in the future of the sector. This is the doing business on robots in berlin. Welcome to the program. The European Commission has filed anti trust charges against accusing the ecommerce giant of attempting to gain an unfair advantage over merchants on its platform. Competition Commission Moderator vestigal says amazon used public data to increase its dominance in its 2 biggest markets in the new france and germany. The European Union started looking into amazon in 2818. 00, if faces a possible fine of up to 10 percent of its annual worldwide revenue, which would amount to billions of dollars. The company rejects the accusations. So lets try to get a better understanding of what exactly the European Commission is accusing amazon of our financial correspondent in frankfurt. Chelsea delaney can explain at the heart of these each charges is amazons dual role in online retail. So amazon is both a platform where other companies go to sell their goods, and its also a brand itself. It sells a number of products from batteries to clothing, to furniture under its own label. They amazon label. And what the e. U. Is saying is that amazon is using all that data, it gets from other Companies Selling on its platform to really boost its own brand. So one potential example of this could be that amazon is looking at the data and suddenly sees a big spike in sales of yoga mats. And in response to that, it starts either upping the marketing for its own yoga mats or producing more of them. And that the u. S. Saying is really a breach of competition law. It also comes and that a big backlash to tech science like amazon around the world. So its not just the e. U. That is investigating this kind of behavior. Its also the u. S. And other countries around the world. But thats the point of view here. Your, lets now across the atlantic and speak to our financial correspondent whos out and about in new york, young ones. What some reasons response been to this update from the European Commission. You know, maybe just one quick word. You mentioned the 10 percent of global sales that amazon could be charged. If we look at the year 29000, for example, that will translate in roughly 30 1000000000. 00 amazon itself is trying to talk itself from small claiming that if you look at the Global Retail market, they would have a little less than one percent. But clearly they have a bigger percentage. If you look at countries like germany, france, or particularly also here in the United States, amazon is also claiming that nobody has done more to Small Businesses than amazon. Well, i guess not every 3rd seller agrees was that a statement. But even if emerson should found guilty next year, they would probably fight it. Sold this case is going a long way from here. Of diversity is a key challenge facing the tech sector with the lack of representation of ethnic minorities in the top jobs. Well, workers at technology, businesses in berlin, a set of a network to try and improve that. There are 600 members pushing for better representation at the top of tech. A Virtual Conference has to do for her colleagues these days because of the current irish pandemic. They palumbo grew up in south africa, 2013, she moved to berlin. There she realized that black employees were under represented in tech companies. So she founded the network black in tech. I think its a reality. Its a reality that there are few days in the take space. And that is not only when it comes to workers that really from the top, when you think about investors, when you think of board members, when you really think about the people behind the creation of what is technology and innovation. As a hot spot for young tech companies, the industry employs over 70000. 00 workers here. But like almost anywhere, the majority of these workers in the german capital are white. And blacks looking for a job in the industry, often have frustrating experiences. Like financial experts, i psec who moved to berlin from the u. S. , so unfortunate. I mean, hard to get to the right. But i dont think jeremy undervalue my experience on whether its training interviews or during everyone is really trying times i asked myself my mind in dealing with it. Well, while the final product drama series are now being made in bulgaria, its required a change in approach to filming. Weve designed sets around areas where we put windows up so you can see the actually behind them, but keep our cast behind the windows. The film, like an addiction to a child, after movies are known for getting hot and heavy, and theres no way to do a socially distanced. Might not be going away any time soon. But here at new boy on a studios, they are determined to keep the cameras rolling. Scott roxboro for us on location there, and joining me now in the studio is my colleague, adrian kennedy. Hi, adrian. Back up there just for a 2nd, because obviously theres no such thing as a socially distant sex scene is pretty much the end, at least for the time being of intimate scenes in movies. I really dont think so. Karen, for one thing, you couldnt socially isolate the production crew, but also the 2 or more participants in this hypothetical scene could also take a test and then things should be all right. Instantly we saw there that invisible screens were being used to separate act and extras. I think the interest of full disclosure we should point out there is a person scream between the ass. And if i move my arm in this story, you can actually sometimes see its the magic of film. Its all illusion. Indeed it is. Now a Film Productions are going ahead, albeit with a lot of improvisation. But is the key to this simply minimizing all contacts for everyone involved outside and on set. And their take that quite far in bulgaria. They are also expect experimenting with remote directing. It is fear possible for the director to work from home. And we can see this in action here. All look fairly plausible for an action sequence. Im not sure whether this would be a good way of directing a dramatic scene with a number of actors. Im sure i cant see him as a remote director. That immediate contact with the director is often so important. Ok, so it looks like everything is more or less possible, but it involves much more planning of course, and certainly a lot of extra cost. Will this lead to certain films, perhaps avoiding scenes or scripts that are considered problematic . But this is the big question. Will we see a spate of films with just a handful of actors and no crowd scenes . Or will we see films that are sets in corners times where we only see people who were masks in public spaces or at work . I have to say that when you watch films these days, and youre confronted with a scene in a disco at a concert with hundreds of people, it does look strange, almost Science Fiction because it no longer reflects our own reality course. We hope that with a vaccine on its way, we might be dialing down the restrictions, but nobody really knows how long we will be continued to be Wearing Masks in public. But we have been asking Industry Experts about how scripts might change, and this is the subject of our report tomorrow. Thats right. And all of the reports showing this week will be on arts 21 in full length, looking at the crisis facing movies and filmmaking. Thanks for joining us. With that backstory, adrian kennedy. Thank you.
