Freedoms that are seen as key to hong kong status as a Global Financial center. M k richardson welcome to the show we start in the United States where thousands of people are gathering in tulsa oklahoma for president Donald Trumps 1st Campaign Rally in more than 3 months the city was the site of a massacre that was one of the countrys deadliest white attacks on black communities almost a century ago the date of the trump rally was moved back a day after an uproar that it was originally scheduled for june 13th which marks the end of slavery in the United States the event is taking place despite warnings from Health Officials about spreading the corona virus. And im joined now by correspondent Stephanie Simons who is in tolson outside the arena where the rally is scheduled jeff on whats going on where you are now. Well were not quite at the arena yet and let me show you whats going on here so this is the checkpoint for the press and behind those white tents is actually where the grounds are where Trump Supporters are streaming in by the sounds and stewards of the arena of course and i step back in the picture and let you show whats going on the site here he is the press now waiting in line for i would say another hour or so then they can pay and will let us in to whats the ground into the arena slash into the forefront of the arena and we can actually tell you whats happening there then until then were kind of stuck here and i have to say so far what we experience was all peaceful the security perimeter here around the arena and for the president this is a benz theres a lot of Law Enforcement here all agencies secret service f. B. I. Oklahoma perfect wrist acacias local Police Metropolitan the Sheriffs Department of the county the National Guard here right behind me a. T. F. And what could go on and on and on so everything so far are from supporters following the health guidelines. Thats my props for this live shot here nobody we have seen or as i would say like 90 percent 90 percent of the term supporters and the people who came to tulsa to support the president to see the president Wearing Masks theyre getting mess handed to their hand outstations where they get this infect and where they get their temperature taken and where they get mess but we saw a lot of grab and stash like take the mask and put it away lot of people who are convinced that covert 9000 is actually a hoax they they just refuse to see the danger theyre in by not wearing a mask and not keeping social distancing standards and there is no social distancing near and far you know whats or ever. And that of could of course cause problems for people who are not Wearing Masks i understand you spoke to some people are only are about why they chose not to wear them what can you tell us about that well exactly we talk to those people and maybe we should listen in for what they say if you will see theyre quite adamant covert 19 not for them i think weve been told so many Different Things about how did not contain the. Thing or by just kind of tired of it really. So youre not concerned about your health or the health of all somebody else you meet here and thats the next im Pretty Healthy i havent heard anybody sneezing or coughing or anything i havent heard any symptoms like any other pandemics and you compare stats on this a lot worse yet its pretty funny here and youre right its true so if we well we didnt we didnt do all this up or for all the other president s you know and saying so i just dont see why i would act any different this. Of course Trump Supporters arent the only ones there are police worried about any clashes between anti and pro trump people. I think that the city is of course where e about this war reach perhaps there is a protest scheduled for late in the afternoon from like lives matter and other groups but those are registered protests and they are placed miles away from the campaign here from the rally so there is a lot of concern that this might get out of hand this is might get clashes between black lives matter protesters and the police Law Enforcement or even with Trump Supporters but Law Enforcement and everybody else is doing pretty much everything to avoid that so its too early to tell how this will play out but so far all peaceful stuff on simons in tells us thank you. Meanwhile on the other side of the fence of the debate over how to achieve Racial Justice continue im joined now by our reporter whos been taking a look at the racial reckoning sweeping America Today good to have you here what have you been seeing well i mean these past weeks weve seen you know a debate about police for 4 and weve seen debates about whether remove statues of former slave owners but weve also seen a debate about the toppling of statues of a different time were talking about books and movies branson even that are themselves kind of a monument to our races past one example is the popular breakfast thats not only known for its makes maple syrup its also known for its controversial mascot you know when the product debuted in 1909 and to my mom was on the character at the time a popular racist caricature that depicted black women as happy to serve their white masters and in fact on to mine a ritually hired a former slave to serve as a companys living trademark so this week quaker oats the company that owns. Finally announced that it will retire the brand essentially saying that theres no room for racism in its lineup and what are some steps other companies have been taking what we see in the u. S. Weve seen several Companies Including nike for instant. Making juneteenth so in the 1000 that was yesterday the official you know the date the marks the actually the end of slavery making that day a paid Company Holiday the german sportswear giant deed is has gone even a step further saying that it will make all its new hires or 30 percent of its new hires at least people of color if we go to europe and britain. A place that has a long and very troubled history with colonialism and. Lloyd of londons has now come out saying that it will pay reparations for its role in the Transatlantic Slave Trade and of course is not Just Companies that are you know partaking in this debate were also seeing a lot of countries especially here in europe that are steeped in colonialism where politicians are now entering the fray for instance the dutch Prime Minister mark what is an out against the long standing in highly controversial black people tradition where essentially you know around christmas time white people dress up in or wear black or black face and parade through the streets highly controversial Prime Minister what it did stop short of saying that youll ban it so theres still a long way to go but you know we are at least seen the 1st steps of kind of a racial reckoning or an attempt to right to racial wrongs if you will so baby steps in the right direction would you say yeah i mean you know a lot of these steps have definitely been welcomed by people of color no question about it but for many also this sudden sea change that where all of this and were now seeing from from a lot of these countries like this that a lot of these countries always an incredibly woke to racism it does come with a bitter aftertaste i mean lets be honest. As tragic as the death of george float is its not new revealing. I think we didnt already know and to claim that his death was somehow the big guy you are. What made all these companies always dont realize that theres a problem with racism is just you know to many it seems so painfully unbelievable almost to the point of being impossible and so you know people of color been calling out on him im a few years. Down the black people for decades and theyve been standing up for Racial Justice you know for ages and so many are asking what took so long and i think its a fair question if we dont see more than if this just ends up being a hollow then frankly george floyd will have died for nothing. Thank you for your analysis. Lets go now to some other stories making news this hour a u. S. Court has allowed the publication of a book a by former National Security advisor john bolton denying an injunction requested by the white house to prevent its release President Trump reacted to the decision by saying a bold senate would pay a quote big price the book will be published on tuesday. Antiracism demonstrators have held protests across the u. K. For a 4th weekend protesters marched here in london and in other cities despite a ban on large gatherings because of the coronavirus pandemic a leader of the black lives matter protests in london demanded a meeting with british Prime Minister boris johnson. East africa is bracing for a 3rd outbreak of Desert Locusts theyre threatening Food Supplies in a region reeling from damaging rains as the coronavirus the migratory past have descended on the area in record numbers since late last year despite the use of pesticides. China has unveiled more details about a new National Security law being drafted for hong kong it says beijing will set up a new National Security bureau in hong kong supervised by the Central Government to crackdown on dissent in the city critics say it means an end to the regions autonomy and the relative political freedom. Well earlier we spoke with correspondent much yes but i got in beijing and he sent us this assessment from what weve seen today this new law is as far reaching as many have fear that the Hong Kong Government will create a National Security agency headed by the chief executive and that agency will also appoint the judges that deal with National Security cases moreover beijing will create its own agency in the city that will be responsible for intelligence gathering but that can also take over cases of National Security so on the basis of crimes that are not narrowly defined at least from what weve seen today beijing can interfere whenever it sees it necessary to deal with what it sees as infringements of National Security. The number of people insect it with corona virus in a Meat Processing plant in northwest germany has now jumped to 1029 up from 803 the day before despite efforts by officials the outbreak made headlines in germany because its the 2nd major virus hotspot at a german slaughterhouse and it reveals major industry wide shortcomings with subcontracted workers being subjected to terrible working and living conditions. However he was quick to point out that employees working in the factory were not to blame for they cope with positive status we want to. Support and our solidarity and they will receive this from our mobile teams who will offer them support partners so that theyre not alone. And i can see that sentiment was directed at many people in the local community unnerved and frustrated with the ongoing situation. This is serious its catastrophic well all just have to suffer again we dont offer shutdowns coming and whether it will affect us its not nice.
