Im so hes almost got to thank you for joining us the National Guard has been deployed to the u. S. City of minneapolis during a 3rd straight night of unrest protests have rocked the city after an unarmed black man died in Police Custody earlier this week and those protests have now spread to other cities including denver l. A. And memphis and the killing of george floyd has left minneapolis in particular reeling with scenes of violence and anger. I riots across minneapolis for the 3rd night protesters stormed a Police Station forcing the offices inside to flee they want justice for george floyd who died in Police Custody over get the picture and i know where no matter where we get a conviction this river her every woman that we want to convert to the good man according to our. I mean the carnage there was evidence of shoplifting record. In a series of tweets the u. S. President said looting would lead shooting hell say criticize the mayors handling of the crisis the mayor hit back donald trump knows nothing about the strength of minneapolis we are strong as hell is this a difficult time period yes but you better be damn sure that were going to get through this. The day before had begun peacefully demonstrators gathered to Mark George Phillips death chanting his last words. It was a reaction to the graphic video that captured the final minutes of floyds life you know 30. 0. 0. After days of escalating violence reinforcements are on their way with trust in the police here say no it is now the job of the National Guard to bring this chaos under control. Earlier we spoke to our correspondent stephanie about the situation in minneapolis minneapolis at least there where we are here is actually on fire for the kerik and pan to the side where you see a building on fire but thats not the only one of course theres about 5 or 6 buildings here exhorting the Police Precinct building precinct 3 building on fire behind me as well as a tobacco store and a Liquor Store People here are still. Angry very angry and theyre saying or most of them at least saying that whatever happens right now here rioting not protesting is actually justified because authorities and the elites need to understand in their words that this is the end they are sick and tired of things happening as they did to george floyd and this is the result however i have to say we also have talked to protesters who say and i call them protesters who say that this is nothing to do with the protest anymore this is rioting and looting and we have witnessed this year. Ok lets get some perspective on the story we have Jessica Taylor with us shes an artist writer and host of black in berlin thats a series on race politics and Race RelationsJessica Thanks for joining us 1st of all you originally come from the u. S. So what do you think when you see these images of protests in many cities across the country. I am in deep grieving and mourning now as. Global black community and. Protest some would say violent protests i think are a physical manifestation of the systems that need to be torn down the systems that need to be destructed we need long term systemic change when i see. The criticism on looting from the u. S. President when i see the criticism on the. News outlets i would love to have a conversation about the looting thats been going on during the pandemic by americas billionaires 400000000000. 00 richer during this pandemic but thats not something that is the spotlight is on so you know it needs to be systemic change jessica are we talking really here about justice for george floyd this case or is this really about the deeper racial inequalities that you see in a place like minneapolis. Definitely and all over the United States and globally the last month has been a nightmare im on our prairie murdered on february 23rd shon read may 6th Briana Taylor made 12 george floyd may 25th just last night i heard about a trans black man in florida talking it date murdered by police that was just yesterday so you know its been a nightmare after nightmare trying after trauma this of course is you know a long legacy of racism and the manatee in the u. S. What is your message to people in positions of power and what is the discussion that needs to take place with the Global Black Community to calm tensions right now. I dont know if we need to count tensions actually i think the tensions are exactly where they should be and i think that the system as it was designed is working perfectly we have people that are being murdered black people that are being murdered and then outrage and the outrage over that outrage and the cycle just continues and you know news outlets in interviews like these. The cycle continues we are calling on institutions to change their policies we have the university of minnesota that just ended its contracts with the Minnesota Police department no longer support them at their Football Games this is a small but necessary step in the fight against institutional forces and White Supremacy so were calling on institutions to do this very necessary work right Jessica Taylor artist writer host of black and brown and thank you so much for sharing your insights with us thank you for having me. Well president trumps latest response to the protests in minneapolis has prompted twitter to flag a recent post for violating twitter rules against glorifying violence in his tweet trump said these thugs are dishonoring the memory of george floyd and i wont let that happen he added that the military is ready to respond and said when the looting starts the shooting starts trumps latest controversial tweet comes as a platform move to fact check previous tweets the president now says twitter is biased against him now he signed an executive order that he says is aimed at checking social media is power to censor communication. He calls it protecting free speech for the social Media Companies say its a politicized approach to law Donald Trumps latest executive order is designed to strip social Media Companies of their existing immunity when it comes to content published on their platform. The choices that twitter makes one chooses to suppress blacklists shadow. Or editorial decisions pure and simple their editorial decisions in those moments twitter seems to be a neutral public platform and they become and theyre there with a viewpoint and i think we can say that about others also this week twitter put fact check labels on 2 of the president s tweets that had unsubstantiated claims about voting by mail in the u. S. Twitter said it decided to do so because the content broke its rules on the key issue of voting trompette back and accuse twitter of trying to interfere in the 2020 president ial election and stuff for free speach. The business and Technology Sector is the order could could freedom of speech across the internet while legal experts are warning that it conflicts with the existing law which owing the congress not the president can change it really is a complete misreading of section 230. 00 it takes. A law that has been interpreted time and time again very very broadly by multiple federal circuit courts and just says im replacing all of this with my own interpretation that i have no right to give about how to interpret this federal law and so it no its really not going to have any staying power in a court i may really is kind if you have a piece of rhetoric of a voter that means the order would likely be challenged in court ahead of the november president ial election date of use ginnell to malone has been looking into the story for us hi joe now why is twitter taking these steps well earlier this month twitter said it was updating its approach to misleading information so that meant for them that they wanted to make it easier to find credible information on twitter and to potentially to limit the spread of potentially harmful or misleading content so what were seeing are is that that approach applied to trump 1st with the Fact Checking label and withdraw glorified violence tag so basically what it did when it tagged that tweet about minneapolis as glorifying violence is that it had the tweet from view you as a user would have to click view in order to see it and then you wouldnt be able to reply reply to it or retrieve it without without comment now twitter also said that it was going to limit the spread of that particular tweet by its algorithms now its important to note at this point that if you had tweeted that to me as an ordinary user in your account what could be possibly suspended that tweet almost definitely removed but this is the tightrope that twitter walk so after years of being criticized for the un even application of its rules its now finally trying to apply them for trump but its discovering that it cannot do so. In the same way because trump happens to be the leader of the most powerful nation on earth its important for the general public to know what he says so last year twitter introduced what it called its Public Interest exception rules and this is what were seeing in action right now but this really is an escalation between trouble twitter isnt yeah well any way you look at it it is an escalation but its kind of hard to imagine that when twitter put those Fact Checking labels on trumps tweets earlier in the week its hard to imagine that they didnt know they would be putting themselves in a collision course with the president and the further steps its taken since then sort of shows us that its determined to stay that course now social media platforms do enjoy broad protections according to the law and now section 230. 00 but sort of says that the social media platforms enjoy protection from liability in terms of what users post on the site thats part of the Communications Decency act thats really hard to dismantle as such its hard to see why twitter should really be afraid of trump at least from a legal standpoint now some experts do say that there could be a Chilling Effect when it comes to policy making for Companies Like twitter but lets be honest isnt this isnt really about like government regulating social media and how they should do that this is about trump being angry that his usage on the platform is being governed or limited in some way and its going to be hard to justify giving that Legal Backing r. E t. Davies genoud to milan reporting for us thank you very much. In sports 2 weeks after the mens bundesliga the womens funded think is now also restarting its season the 1st games will take place on friday and saturday after a 3 month suspension due to the coronavirus pandemic the players from the 12 club stay fit with individual workouts until they could resume training. Germanys female footballers are back in business while womens leagues in england and elsewhere have scrapped their seasons the bundesliga will restart its 30th campaign. Its going to the i think it sends a very big message to the world and not just the womens football world that womens football is back. But the restart does have its issues 1st of all it costs money mandatory coronavirus tests are financed by the f. A. But the clubs will have to pony up for additional expenses like hotels and security personnel and their t. V. Revenues are peanuts compared to the mens league just 67000. 00 euros per club the biggest source of income is sponsorship money that gives an advantage to established clubs like buying a munich and perennial champions false board. I. I want to make clear that anyone whos not prepared to take the next steps will find it very very difficult to play in the womens splendidest league. I think it would be difficult for exclusively womens football clubs to win multiple titles because of their financial situation for. Smaller clubs like a season which has reached the cup final twice could be left behind they are dependent on local companies which themselves are in trouble because of the Coronavirus Crisis they may have to reduce their Financial Support to the clubs or end it all together the clubs cannot expect any help from the f. A. Either. As a registered association specifically a nonprofit. Just to dissociation we cannot care for a donate anything to the Business Operations of the individual clubs without compensation. Even trivino potsdam can no longer make waves in the bluntest league the club won 6 League Titles and 2 Champions League trophies but those successes are unlikely to ever be repeated and this bill would assist i believe the Current Situation will either stabilize or worsen over the clubs dont know what can be invested in the long term whether their partners will still exist in 2 years and be able to invest the same amount that makes it easier for big clubs like byron munich and ball sport with. A small clubs will have to get creative and hope they manage to pull off a surprise every once in a while. Thank you for watching good of you news for back at the top of the hour.
