Zuckerberg says hes proud of the Progress Facebook is making on Election Security but he is still worried about domestic Information Operations targeting novembers elections and he supports more government regulation also coming up france announces the 1st death in europe from the coronavirus epidemic a Chinese Tourists passes away in a French Hospital as the global death toll of the outbreak surpasses 1500 people but officials from china where the virus started insist the outbreak will soon be over. Im called aspen thanks for joining me World Leaders meeting at the Munich Security Conference have already laid out opposing views on the health of the western Alliance Earlier today u. S. Secretary of state by pump alle rejecting claims that his country is backing away from its role as a global leader. Day 2 of the munich conference one of the main speakers u. S. Secretary of state mike pompei oh he began by contradicting a thesis put forward the day before by german president fine father steinmeyer lee winning that the United States rejects the International Community and of quote. Here this morning to tell you the facts im happy to report that the death of the Transatlantic Alliance is grossly over exaggerated that may be but the mornings other main speaker was not so sure french president Emmanuel Mccaw said europe must become more independent of the us soon they dont but if we have no freedom to act then we have no credibility in Foreign Policy and we cant be a junior partner to the United States of america. Mccollum from peo also disagreed over one of the main themes of this years conference that the west is losing global influence. When i look at the world as its being shaped and thats the theme of your conference this year there is indeed a weakening of the west looks you dont this idea of whats necessary as the core theme for this years conference and im sure to there many of you who would call yourself a realist. But let me give you an idea of whats real the west is winning. 15 years ago we thought that our values were universal that we were going to dominate the world in the long term that we were dominant in terms of Technology Military and so on and then i look at the horizon of 10 to 15 years we are going to be increasingly pushed by other agendas another values it is a myth of the free west has a far Brighter Future than illiberal alternatives or winning or doing it together. It was left to nato secretary general young starting back to try and smooth over the continuing transatlantic tensions europe and north america are indispensable partners to sawicki of the same korean so when we stand together we can compete with confidence protect our interests and values thank you i. Wanted terry shelters covering the conference for us from munich she joins us now for more terry today really the meat of the conference when we see all those big names taking the stage u. S. Secretary of states mike pale among them a very trumpy and speech and really arguing the opposite of what french president had to say saying essentially look the west is winning. Thats right carl is not at all surprising to hear trumpet ministration Officials Say theyre winning but what was surprising about secretary pompei is your marks is that he said the u. S. And europe together are this team that trance atlantic issues are are winning and thats something that we dont often hear from Trump Administration officials including secretary pompei himself who is known to criticize in various Service Terms the European Union european officials even the european way of life sometimes so this was definitely a turnabout of the usual trump trump message. That the u. S. And europe are a single team and they are doing things right and its working. Pompei also doesnt often agree with us democrats but they do agree on Chinese Telecom giant huawei theyve been calling on europe the u. S. Delegation not to allow wall way to build its new 5 g. Networks how did that message from the u. S. Go down today. That message has already been delivered now for more than a year as european governments looked at whether they were going to integrate while Way Technology into their expansion of 5 g. Networks and in fact Europe Europe has already decided that it will allow while way thats something that does not sit well with the United States at all and i think the most surprising thing that we heard today was actually the defense secretary marc esper who said that china is the number one priority of the pentagon potential adversaries not russia but china so this was something that the u. S. Was very much wanting to hit home in trying to convince the europeans that this is a Security Risk for them if they go ahead with with increasing business ties with china theyve the u. S. Has made it clear in no Uncertain Terms that it does not approve of this however crawl they have backed off of a threat to stop intelligence sharing with European Partners if they do use while Way Technology so were not really sure where the those threats will go now but it seems that the u. S. Has had to it had to accept some use of what we technology in european 5 terry did we learn anything more today about a potential peace deal thats being hammered out apparently between the u. S. And the taliban. Not not really because that is still at a very preliminary stage when youre talking about the peace deal the larger peace deal we did press the u. S. Officials on when this 7 day period of a reduction in violence with the taliban would start and theyre still not a precise date on that and only once we see whether the taliban is committed to reducing violence to stopping attacks on civilians only then is the u. S. Going to be willing to move ahead with a wider peace deal but i did just speak with an afghan official who told me there is a draft and people are just waiting to see whether its going to be possible to deal with the taliban this time whether theyre serious about making peace but i am told that there is more encouraging signs people are more willing to believe than they have been in years so perhaps there really is good coming in in afghanistan yeah potentially big news there correspondent teri schultz munich for us thank you very much. Well hes not a head of states hes not a diplomat hes not a general but facebook c. E. O. Mark zuckerberg is still one of the most powerful people to take the stage in munich just hours ago he faced questions on the Election Security saying he was proud of the progress that facebook has made since 2016 and he repeated his previous calls for more government regulation. Ringback i think that there needs to be regulation and at least 4 areas touching our company and they are elections and political discourse around content more broadly content moderation. Privacy and data portability i believe what our responsibility is is to build the operational muscle to build to proactively enforce whatever the policy is and regulations are to make sure that we can fight election interference take down content thats going to be dangerous have good auditing and controls on the data that we hold for people and businesses to make sure that is that people can have confidence in that. But at some level i do think that we dont want private Companies Making so many decisions about how to balance social equity is without a more democratic process to get your border jol delroy watched that speech live in joins me now in studio for some more analysis here now joel of course 26000 we know russian government agents they used facebook they interfered in the u. S. Election zuckerberg has been facing questions about that ever since 2016 what do you have to say today about Election Security a big topic today at the security conference he talked a lot about how facebook is investing in making sure that there is theres a crackdown on the spread of misinformation during sensitive times like elections he talked about how they have now have to be able to shut down a 1000000 fake accounts a day some of those accounts within minutes of them starting up here missing his company was slow to understand the scale of the misinformation that was being spread during the u. S. 2016 election and during the break that referendum in the United Kingdom but now he says that theyre employing more than 35000 people spending more on security today than the Company Actually entirely a few years ago ok so they were there is proactive instead of reactive and of course a big election coming up this year in the United States so more eyes will be on the bergen face book there. Now the other topic that came up was regulation right in the u. S. Weve been hearing calls for more regulation of Tech Companies what did zuckerberg have to say of course hes speaking in europe where there is some regulation of facebook right well have 2 areas you spoke about regulation one is that he said that facebook should be regulated is a new type of entity something between a newspaper which is it responsible for its own content and a Telecoms Network which is not responsible for what people do on it he wants some kind of a new category created he called for regulation in 3 areas but if you listen closely he didnt say he wants total regulation just in terms of elections content moderation privacy and data portability well as you mentioned in europe we already have quite strong a glacial on a lot of those areas last year we introduced the general datta protection rule in europe and some states in the u. S. Are also trying to copy some of those regulations other countries are bringing in their own rules forcing facebook to take down content if they dont like it so really zuckerberg trying to get ahead of the game here trying to play catch up where in a lot of areas there already is strong to give asian and he wants his company to be involved in that conversation rather than just responding to it you know why not take the lead and suggest a regulation he wouldnt mind seeing right as the c. E. O. Of facebook. Thank you very much for analysis. Our votes take a look now at some of the other stories making news around the world far right demonstrators have held a socalled funeral march in the german city of dresden to mark the 75th anniversary of the world war 2 allied bombings there they were challenged by a larger group of antifascist counter protesters some 25000 people were killed by the bombings in the final phase of world war 2.
