virus the death toll is approaching $1000.00 and more than $40000.00 cases have been reported across china. a tale of 2 strikers. faces off against. champions post challengers in munich. hello i'm terry barton good to have you with us the 92nd account of the awards have made movie history in los angeles with the south korean film parasite becoming the 1st ever non english language film to win the top all score for best picture but director did not stop there he picked up 3 other awards as well. it was the big surprise of the night and they are scared goes to paris i was the 1st to have an english language movie to me in the us. so call. south korean director bond junho news dot class satire about the gap between the rich and poor in modern day seoul who's the big winner of the night and. it and a total of 4 awards including best director for bone junho who paid tribute to one of cinema's all time great directors and fellow nominees. novel comes out. thank you so much when i was young and studying cinema there was a saying that i carved deep into my heart which is the most personal is the most creative that quote to us from. our great martin scorsese so i. was thank you i will drink until next morning thank you i. never know sydney other big categories but the awards went to the hotly tipped favorites. and a comeback for wren is alway she took the best actress award for her the trial of judy garland in the film judy you take anything for depression for that is that it was. i. did you walk in phoenix won best actor for his terrifying performance as the joker in the dark origin story of one of the world's best known comic book villains to a. supporting actor awards went to laura dern for her role as a divorce lawyer and marriage story i presume and brad pitt won his 1st acting all scott mcclellan his supporting role as a laidback stunt man in question terran tino's once upon a time in hollywood. and the oscars wouldn't be there. without some political jiving it told me i only have 45 seconds up here which is 45 seconds more than senate gave john bolton this week. i'm thinking maybe quinn does a movie about it in the end they don't do the right thing. but there was also some good old fashioned fun. and plenty of entertainment. music legend elton john performing his oscar winning of original song from the bio pic rocket man. getting what he would in the mood for the infamous because off to parties. well the movie correspondent scott joins us now for more all they all scores a start i know that when the oscar nominations were announced you were very excited about parasite what in your opinion makes this an oscar worthy film. yeah terry. there's that was my favorite film of the year i saw it last year in cannes where it won the palme d'or and i think it's amazing actually that the oscars got it right this year they almost never do in my opinion they almost never agree with me this year they did the the thing that makes such an amazing film is not just the fact that it's the 1st non english language film to win at the oscars it's because of what duncan home does with with the movie i mean this this is a religion or a mash up it starts sort of as a comedy satire. sort of thriller territory and by the end it's almost a horror movie at the whole time the whole film is basically an allegory of the social division in society which although it's set very specifically in south korea is a very universal story i think is probably one of the strongest and most profession directors working today and it's. almost a crime that korean cinema and him in particular haven't been recognized until now i think it's phenomenal that the oscars finally did get it right and finally recognize what's been happening in south korea for at least the last decade ok so parasite winning is also developed in your opinion and you say there's actually a bit of a surprise not just that the oscars now agree with you and the other big surprises . not so much i mean as i say parasite was the big. big shock for me because this sort of safe choice would have been the big prestige war film 1917 which won 3 oscars but all sort of in technical categories i think it was interesting to see that all the acting oscars went to the people we expect them to go to so walking phoenix winning for joe. rainey seliger winning for judy laura dern winning for marriage tori and then brad pitt finally winning his 1st oscar for once upon a time the hollywood i'd like to. focus on brad pitt just because this is probably the world's biggest film star and he played a role in this film where he's playing essentially himself playing the huge gorgeous film star and i think it was a bit of a tip of a hat to an old style movie icon that they gave the oscar to brad pitt and he gave a nice very sort of politically charged speech now no film award ceremony these days would be complete without a controversy of some color only some strong political statements the attention this time scott. oh well there was a lot of focus this time on the lack of female representation at the oscars i mean there were no female directors nominated there were barely any women nominated at all at all categories this is mentioned by several of the people who one mentioned joaquin phoenix about i like to actually point out a silent comment that i thought was very very effective natalie portman the actress came to the oscars and on the red carpet she was wearing a dress with embroidery of the names of the female directors who were snubbed including a graphic airway and the french director matthew but i thought that was a perfect statement of saying how women voices that sort of been silenced at this year's oscars scott thank you so much as always d w film critic scott roxboro. a major winter storm is bearing down on parts of northern europe after having already battered the british isles germany's entire long distance rail network is shut down and people across the region are being advised to stay indoors. a tricky time saying at london's heathrow airport. battling hurricane force winds the plane manages to touchdown. before pulling up again. taking off is no easy around europe hundreds of flights were canceled. rail services have also been disrupted with chaotic scenes at london rail station. how did i was so small city so i couldn't get on so i know you put and that's one and it's being delayed britain has borne the brunt of the storm with widespread flooding in towns and villages in the country's north. in island go away was forced to cancel the opening ceremony for its year is year paean capsule of culture and the aptly named wild atlantica way on the west coast took a pounding. germany has been hard hit to several people were injured as wind speeds surged beyond 170 kilometers per hour. even for those who saw the winds as the thrill the fun quickly gave way to danger the storm is now moving south with more damage expected. our reporter chief niranjan is in ball and following this story for us to how severe is this storm. these are pretty severe storms we've seen wind speeds of up to 140 potentially 150 kilometers an hour in some parts of germany and i mean here in bonn if you look behind me it doesn't actually seem so bad and to be honest i think a lot of people here woke up this morning and were actually pleasantly surprised at how little damage there was but the weather is very unpredictable we just saw in the space of the last half an hour a lightning strike a hail storm and now things seem to be a bit better but it is definitely a storm a winter storm of some a quite some severity how much disruption is express is expected across germany today. the hardest hit people are commuters i think we've seen to it to bonn germany railway service canceled basically all long distance train trains which are here in situ like bomb means commuters coming in from cologne and neighboring cities of struggling there's also been a lot of disruption to air traffic with major international airports like desoto in frankfurt have had to be diverting flights and canceling flights and this even extends down to parents for instance schools have can't so the employees have asked employees not to come into work and that's led to all sorts of disruption with people trying to organize childcare trying to work from home so it's been a difficult time for a lot of germans so when can we expect things to return to normal. so here in bonn it seems like we've already seen the worst of it already passed the eye of the storm seems to have moved over to the middle of germany and down toward the south we're expecting by by the end of the day or 2 more or even for most of the storm to apos through. thank you very much. in ball. now to some of the other stories making headlines around the world mourners are gathering at a shopping center in thailand today to pay their respects after the 40000 cases of the bars are now reported across the country this after thousands of people were allowed to disembark a cruise ship in hong kong after a 4 day florentine resulted in passengers testing negative for the bars another cruise ship off japan remains in quarantine with over $100.00 confirmed cases. france has recorded just 6 cases of the coronavirus so far but chinese people and others in the east asian community say they are becoming targets for discrimination with many taking to social media to share their stories d.w. correspondent sonja politic i went to paris maine chinatown district to find out more. a basement in paris is chinatown. these elaborate costumes were meant for the annual chinese new year parade the draws thousands of spectators but for the 1st time the event was called off the sea or suddenly 10 was a regular participant blames the coronavirus and the stigma it's fueled certainly. was cancelled not out of fear of the corona virus but the fear of children being stigmatized with being told that i should children coming back from school crying because they were singled out and made fun of they were insulted and called names so we didn't feel like celebrating it has been very tough the thought of it suddenly turned grew up in this neighborhood a melting pot known for its 1960 s. high rise apartment blocks and dozens of east asian stores and restaurants the frenchman is of chinese and cambodian descent and says he'd never really experienced racism openly in paris until a week ago. it was a. mess took the metro and as i sat down the person next to me got up and moved away and then he covered his mouth and nose with a scuff i realized it was a form of xenophobia and fear i was sad and shocked because it's far from being an isolated case accounts of prejudice avoidance and slurs a piling up in france stalking the needs. here in southeastern paris the city's main chinatown which is home to large numbers of france's ition community the usually bustling neighborhood seems a bit subdued many residents are wary of speaking on camera but some are clearly rattled by incidents off with this abuse amid fears of the coronavirus a medium what a friend of mine who's asian was taunted and called a virus in the metro that's not very nice but as i get every our customers wanted to know if our waiters had chinese nationality even though ours is a vietnamese restaurant seeing asian faces didn't reassure them fitted to the potomac has really given free rein to racism against asians something which in france was not really talked about and not taken seriously the issue was revoked aerated across the french media on the banks of the river same. journalist lynn lundahl has been following accounts by french asians of being targeted using the now popular hash tag i am not a virus looks like it's the french train. she has long campaigned against and recent fronts but nothing prepared her for these responses to an article on the coronavirus in china she translates into english you shouldn't have weird beast this is normal they would do anything in that country the country is overcrowded to nature is doing its work this is horrible like people they have no empathy we're just talking about sick people remember and then they will say say racist things like a virus is just a pretext to be a hateful act clear said she was trying to do with little and has been speaking out against the heat on talk shows and on social media because she's also hit out at sections of its own profession for example for this headline in the local newspaper warning of a yellow alert so far france has recorded only a few cases of the corona bite was if the numbers go up the fear is the prejudice could spread just the smallest. in other news the u.s. military says 2 of its soldiers were killed and 6 others wounded when an afghan soldier opened fire on them instant took place in our province in eastern afghanistan the afghan defense ministry reports one of its soldiers was also killed and 3 more wounded. at a boeing 737 operated by the budget russian airline u.-t. air was badly damaged during a hard landing in the city since all 94 passengers and crew escaped serious injury the airline blamed unpredictable winds for the accident. now i guess in sports for you know and in the bundesliga soccer the match between rb leipsic and buying on sunday not only featured the top 2 goal scorers in the leak by as well but the. 16. but also decided the table leader only one point separated the defending champions and the visitors ahead of kickoff despite the game finishing in a drawl the end to end action had fans on the edge of their seats take a look. at a full house in munich as expected for this final league meeting between these 2 titans byron unique in our being lied 6 share of the spoils earlier in the season and with tivo bana the least 2nd most prolific striker with 20 goals versus robert 11 doggy who's got 22 there was a high expectation of balls hitting the back of the net byron got close in the 1st half but it ended scoreless 11 dogs he's face says it all in the 2nd half leipsic look to break the deadlock 7 site used to be too much from close range. minutes later team obana draws noyo off the line gets past him but david put his body in the line of fire then no one at the handball but neuer calmed down. finally a penalty look to give byron a chance to score at $11.00 he was taken down inside the box by mcconnell but live in dos he never got his shot v.a.r. stepped in and made the right call go to the striker was offside when he received the ball it was like 6 turned the wrong team on the end of a botched this one just to the outside no goals at all in this top of the table clash definitely not with biron brass wanted another draw against life see. more in sunday's game in munich we've got nick mckenna climb from deep sports with us good morning good morning so we saw there a tale of 2 strikers as it were who do you think will regret having missed those shots marist at the end of the season i may have from both match the game yesterday mean that the to both teams and both players are content with the result it was in these are of course 2 strikers and their mission is to score as many goals as possible but obviously as you see if you see now on the screen they didn't try and they tried hard they couldn't it wasn't for lack of trying. for the pyrrus you can see how tactically astute both teams were specially the 2nd half when life's managed to show that they capable of you know holding the only gets by on a very good day this is the 1st time and therefore have been a stick in history they've managed take a point away from violence to still get score a goal that's going to be something they might do next time but they held their composure and getting that one point i mean it might go a long way for them especially if the next team matches between now and of the season this game ended a 6 game winning streak for munich are they beginning to stutter or do you think they'll still take the season title we're still talking about to the best teams in the league and it is only a draw in the grand scheme of things as a long way to go between now and may of course there's plenty of points to be one intended to be lost the most important thing for buying now is to learn from what happened yesterday against live see they of course have the experience by they've won last 7 titles that's no fluke they know how to. when it was just a good title and they are in the driving seat definitely it does however mean for the biggest leak of this incredibly interesting for fans because there's only 4 points now between us and 4th and the of course you know how the benefit of hindsight and the team which will be the most frustrating from this weekend's results will be told and who lost on saturday they went from a winning position to a losing position in the last minutes of the game and they now have a full point gap between themselves and bind that 4 point gap we psychologically harder to make up than a is for other teams at this point in the season and was to see how dome and do. their game was called off because of the weather but they're still doing pretty well in the league they have good standing do you think that mention glad about has an outside chance of taking the time. that's the see you find those in the same positions don't mean that 4 points off by having that game in hand having the fact that they will play cologne at some point between now and probably the end of march and get those 3 points i do see them having a title challenge is very much alive i don't see them finishing for us i see that very much as being behind in life 6th place to finish the season nick thanks so much for the insights nick mckenna kline from d w sports with. a solar orbiter has been launched into space on an unprecedented mission to capture the 1st pictures of the sun's it loose poles the $1500000000.00 craft is a joint mission between the european space agency and nasa it will join us as parker solar probe which was launched 18 months ago and will bencher perilously close to the sun in order to discover its secrets. the solo will examine the sun's activity by exploring its magnetic field more closely than ever before the satellite will also look at the electrically charged particles that our star emits into space under average circumstances but also during active phases known as solar storms having some forewarning of when such a storm is imminent would be invaluable because they can wreak havoc on satellites . that's why research is hope data from the probe will help for cost them one day. but the solar orbit so we'll have to get very close to the sun to gather the necessary data. to help we have a couple so that's the difficulty with the solar orbiter the satellite will be fried like a sausage on a grill it won't get will make us the air around it is hot it'll get grilled directly by the radiation. each time it approaches the sun and it's circular path the solar orbit will be subjected to have a 10 times the radiation that strikes satellites and earth's orbit no electronics can withstand that that's why the sensitive measuring devices have to be protected by heat shield the orbiter's outer layer will heat up to over $500.00 degrees celsius surprisingly it's made of a black material. the black layer will absorb the enormous heat coming from the sun protecting the sensitive equipment during the observations. in them shots and if something happens to the black material the area beneath it wouldn't heat up any more intensely than the areas around it if you use a mirrored surface instead on a crack appeared in the mirror it would get especially hot the heights causing it to break. the solo orbiter will bring several telescopes closer to the sun than any spacecraft ever has before. they need to have a clear view of the stuff. but it's powerful radiation comp blind them. that's why each device is equipped with a custom fitted protective window these are coated with a special fin layer that only lets a very small amount of radiation through only the frequencies the researches want to observe such as x. rays or violet radiation. they often think if you seen one side of the sun you seen them all but you haven't you need a complete overview to get the full picture of the solar orbit and will play a decisive role in delivering but. it will allow scientists a look at the sun's turbulent areas for extended periods much longer than in the past and they will also be able to observe its poles for the 1st time. should provide new insights into the secrets of and help predict solar storms better than ever before. it's the year of the rat according to the chinese lunar calendar and the rodent is also putting in an appearance at this year's carnival celebrations here in
