The woman crying on the phone to her son had red hand prints around her neck, a purple bruise on her shoulder and a torn shirt, according to a Portage County sheriff’s report. The sheriff’s office said an investigation determined that the boyfriend had choked her to the point of unconsciousness during an argument that evening in May. When she regained consciousness, the woman walked out of the home on her own. EMS treated her, but she refused to go to the hospital. The sheriff’s office said the woman told them what happened, but refused to provide them with a written statement, saying she did not want to get her boyfriend into trouble.
