world of diabetes. doctors were surprised to find a new diabetes drug is helping people shed pounds. it costs around $500 a year. and as christie meyers of ktrk in houston reports, it seems to be worth every penny. >> reporter: chances are either you or someone you know is trying to lose weight. >> i'll post on facebook, look, i'm down to a size 12. what did you do? >> reporter: but kristen cartizzi wasn't. she was just trying to control her diabetes. so how did she drop 40 pounds and four dress sizes? >> i've gone from a size 20 to a size 12. i've gotten into a couple 10s. >> reporter: the weight loss is a side effect of her new diabetes drug called victoza. >> i see an average weight loss for men between 10 and 12 pounds a month and women usually six pounds a month. at least for the first several months and almost a year. >> reporter: this man lost 110 pounds in a year. one of hundreds of dr. alan hoffman's diabetes patients who are losing weight.
