in new england and the central midwest suggest that republicans have an opportunity tonight to make a c tuesday in the u.s. house of representatives. in the senate the magic number for the g.o.p. is a pickup of just ten of the 100 member body. already there are a handful of seats that have essentially been all, but written off by democrats. we're talking about wisconsin, arkansas, north dakota, and indiana. the states where the incumbents have retired, namely north dakota and indiana and in arkansas and wisconsin where the incouple bent could be in significant trouble and then remarkable number of toss up races, west virginia, illinois, the president's old senate seat. colorado and washington all within the margin of error and just within the last 24 to 36 hours even california has now gotten so close, it, too, could well be described as a tossup race and finally we look the a the governor's contest tonight and these tend to be overshadowed by the battle or power in congress
