Despite messy intrigue, macaque maintains matriarchy

The reign of Japan’s monkey queen has just begun.

Last year, Yakei, a 9-year-old female Japanese macaque, fought several other macaques, including her own mother, to become the alpha of her troop. That made Yakei the first known female troop leader in the history of Takasakiyama Natural Zoological Garden in southern Japan, which was established in 1952 and is home to more than 1,000 macaques.
