Jim Clyburn, a South Carolina native and the highest-ranking African American in Congress, is advocating for Judge Childs. Judge Childs, 54, is a graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law. She was appointed to the US District Court of South Carolina by President Barack Obama in 2009 and confirmed by the US Senate in 2010. She has experience working as the state’s Workers’ Compensation Commissioner and Deputy Director of the South Carolina Division of Labor. Judge Childs reportedly has support from members of the Congressional Black Caucus and fellow Judge Leslie Abrams, who is a Federal District Court judge in Georgia, and the younger sister of voting rights advocate
