Customers complain of suspected inaccuracies with Austin Water's new smart meters

Austin Water is undergoing a massive five-year project started in 2020 to replace more than a quarter of a million analog water meters with digital meters. They’re called ‘smart meters’ but customers have reached out to KXAN Investigates dumbfounded by the amount of water the meters claim they’re using.
And as we found out, Austin Water says it does not have a centralized way to know how many customers are complaining about suspected false readings during this multi-million-dollar conversion.
