I got a quick note. Just some quick housekeeping. In case the Sprinkler System goes off, please ignore it. Jamaal bowman is here, and that is just a false alarm. All right. Yeah. Screw that guy. Thats not cool. We used to do that in high school. We are finding a speaker of the house. Like mike johnson, nobody has a clue who i am. And i look like a far right extremist, so, you know what i mean . They couldnt even agree on a speaker. That is how divided we are. Everyone is so controversial. Every comedian. Al franken was supposed to be here. This was supposed to be his outfit. As you know, al franken, his hands were a little busy because of the titty thing. Remember that . They were afraid to book him. Anybody can do al franken. Just be a little pretentious. Plug your nose. That is all you have to do to do al franken. I didnt really grab the titty. I grazed the titty. That is awkward. We considered some new people. I was like the 25th choice. Dont expect much. I think they tried to get rachel maddow. She is basically a lesbian stephen colbert. You cant tell the difference. She is funnier than him. They booked me, some guy you dont know, who looks like Zach Galifianakis banged Macaulay Culkin read this is brutal. This is not even a car. This is a grass that they picked up for the stage. I am 36. I look 36 from the front. From the back, i could be 12. I am a pedophiles worst nightmare. Know what im saying . I have caught 30 pedophiles since ive been in dc. I should be working for the police department, catching pedophiles. I could hang out in the playground and just wait. You know. Just wait for some creep. Hey, little boy, do you want to come with me in my van . I dont know, mister. I dont think that is a good idea. How about you come with me downtown . Gotcha. Gotcha. You guys are like, this is a Michael J Fox ripoff here. We have so many people. We asked Mitch Mcconnell to do it, but he froze up. You know it is bad when they pick a straight white guy with resting january 6th face. This is bottom of the barrel stuff. I look like i stormed the capital to sell espressos. The white guy is back. Thanks a lot. Did you notice that war ended . The covid thing and it right when ukraine was invaded. He stopped reporting on covid. It was done the same day that russia came in. That was suspicious. If that didnt happen, dr. Fauci would still be on the tv. You would be like, dr. Fauci, it has been three years. You said two weeks. What i actually said was it is two weeks to flatten the curve. It is not possible. All right. You are all sponsored by pfizer. I feel bad for the media. You have tons of competition right now. Your main competitor is teenagers on tiktok. Did you know that most people now trust tiktok to get their news . They are getting their news from the communist chinese app. That is sad. I like to talk, but i think tiktok wouldve been a better name for a dating app for women in their late 30s. All right. Speaking of angry feminists, cnn is here. Round of applause for cnn. Right . We left 2000 seats empty on the balcony there to commemorate cnn plus. Will take a moment of silence. All right. What was that . Tell a joke . Your entire News Media Organization is one big joke. Big news. Right . We call it fake news. So sad. Nasty cnn interrupting me. So sad. So sad. Art. I will tell a joke. What is your moms name . No. I stopped watching cnn when they had that death ticker. Remember that . That was pretty cruel. You guys work or need for that death ticker everything all day. It was like checking the stock market. A fun fact about the death ticker if you played in reverse, it shows cnns ratings in real time. Well, i have already been canceled as a comedian, so they made a big mistake booking me. You guys ready to start the show . We have a great show. You guys ready to start the show . Guys, round of applause for coming out. Thank you so much. Hi, everyone. It is senator Chuck Schumer. Im sorry i couldnt be there with you. Those of you who know Chuck Schumer know how much respect and admiration i have for journalists. Most importantly, for schumer stories. Your work is the bedrock on which this nation is built. We need this bedrock now more than ever before. The press informs. It establishes truth from fiction. It keeps the government in check. It is the guardrail for the country. It has been since the founding of the republic, keeping us from swerving off the road, going over a cliff. When the press tells the truth, when the press speaks truth to power, when the press does its job, our country is stronger. So in this room, everyone, i salute you. The fact that you, the free press, are always here, gives me the solace that the greatness of our democracy, even in these troubling times, will ultimately prevail. Have a drink for me tonight. Not too many. I need to be sharp at my inevitable press Conference Tomorrow morning. Please welcome, representing cnn, rtca dinner chair, noah gray. It is a tradition for the Dinner Committee chair to offer a toast. Thank you, mark. Lets all raise our class to the 118th congress. Democracy, as we have seen, is not always the easiest form of government, but our Congress Remains a shining example of giving the people government access to the bodies doing the governing. Look no further than the microphones and cameras that surround the office of the speaker or many votes for speaker the plaza outside of the capital, allowing the electorate to see not just what the government is doing, or not doing, but also, how it is done. Here is to the 118th congress. May you continue to open your halls to microphones and cameras , and set an example for press freedom, and to the men and women of the press, as my people say, lchaim. Thank you. You can kill the lights. Fisher. Here to introduce the joan s. Verrogne award, please welcome Tyler Fischer. The sword honors the memory of joan. Thank you for not heckling me. Thank you, sir. I have been told i am a crisis actor. That i am doing this for fame. I spent five years here in the capital. Here to present the 202n award, please welcome longtime2n nbc journalist pete williams. Well, im delighted to be here i am delighted to be here to present this award to the winners this year, my former colleagues from nbc, frank thorp v and sarah mimms of nbc news. This award honors their multimedia project, which was called, basis of the investigation, how the house january 6th Committee Final report came to be. I think you will find their work provides an intimate account of the anguish of bravery demonstrated by some of those who were caught up in the drama of the capitol right, and the historic congressional hearings that followed. At the heart of this project are some riveting photographs, taken by your colleague, frank thorp v. These days, photographers can choose from highly automated digital cameras that do just about everything but press the shutter, but frank did not take the easy way out. He went decidedly old school, employee black and white films in a camera that was stateof theart in 1912. He developed the images himself, working in a dark room that had about the same rate of of movement as a window seat in a Economy Class airplane. Im the revealing of intimate results are clearly worth it. There is a reason the National Gallery of art asked for one of franks january 6 photos for its permanent collection. They may be still autographs, but they are moving pictures. Sarah combined those photos of the interviews frank conducted to write elegant descriptions of what those people experienced, and their work reveals the dignity and humanity of people caught up in the capitol right in its aftermath. Nbc news considered it a sterling example of how the broadcast and Digital Space can work together, obviously, so did the judges. It is my pleasure to present the award to this years winner of the Joan Shorenstein barone award , frank thorp and sarah mimms. Oh, my. Got to stand up for. Oh, you are standing. Oh my gosh. Stand up. Oh, you are standing. Oh man, thank you so much. First and foremost, thank you so much. He literally helped install the darkroom at my house that i used develop all the photos for this piece. You are my hero, my journalistic guiding light, and someone i try to emulate every day. Your friendship and guidance let me to write here. Thank you. This piece would not exist if it were not for the people who trusted me to fix that 1920s film camera in their faces, and agreed to sit down and talk to me about one of the most dramatic, life altering experiences they have ever encountered. I am particularly grateful to the officers that told their story for the piece. I am literally sitting in the exact same place where they work assaulted while protecting the capitol. This piece pertained became a confluence of two things i particularly passionate about, telling stories in a differentiating way, and facing an processing trauma is incredibly important. We as journalists cannot turn our back on the sometimes dramatic events we are entrusted to cover. We can also not turn our back on a need to do the work, to admit how those events affect us. Time can heal the wounds, but as time passes, many try to taper over how deeply shocking and traumatic january 6 was, not only for the country, but for the people who experienced it firsthand. The journalism that we all do helps make sure the record reflects the reality. It is my hope thank you. It is my hope that this piece helps ensure the voices protected by those attacked at the capitol, and those who never did the Election Results remain dominant in the pages of history. Sarah mimms , as said, wrote the words in this, turning hours of interviews into a cohesive and compelling narrative that beautifully accompanied the images. Amanda guided the piece to publication. The piece is a combination of over seven months of work. It would not have been possible without the vision sarah and chelsea saw from the photo department, test to create such a beautiful presentation at something very different than what we do at nbc. Thank you to jenelle rodriguez, betsy corona for taking very little convincing to make this into a video they would air and nick for combing through hundreds of images and editing that video. His creativity and vision this happen. We would not be here if it works for our Capitol Hill Team at nbc news. Writable, rebecca kaplan, kyle stewart, kate has a, scott juan , and carrie dan, along with Ken Strickland and chloe arensberg. When i started on capitol hill in 2011, in d. C. Only had four people on the hill. As we have grown, the team consistently crushes it every day, leading the pack, inspiring me to push myself and think outside the box. I am so grateful or you. I also want to give a special shout out to haley, who ran a special coverage for the january 26 january 6th committee. She also shared her story for the piece. I am very grateful for you as well. Thank you to the house and senate radio and Television Galleries for trying to keep us out of trouble, trying, and the stills gallery for accommodating with all of my ridiculous cameras. My father and mother are here. You taught me to be the present and journalist i am today. I am so lucky to
