conversation, and i thought i might share with you and also our audience, but i expressed to him in that telephone conversation. i congratulated him for his courageous fight against great odds. i admire a fighter. and he proved himself to be one. he never gave up. >> this is james -- . the drama, the tension and the suspense of the campaign. has faded into history. the american people have elected richard nixon as their new president. this election is more than a personal triumph, a lifelong dream fulfilled. mr. nixon it is the assumption, of the greatest challenge, that has befallen an american president in decades. he promotes unity in a time of unrest. and to intensify americas search, of international accord and world peace. >> no american politician in recent memory has been more wrongly written off or more generously supported, then richard mehl house nixon, the president elect of the united states. nixon has suffered defeat that could've ended his political career. but nixon indoors, even before 1968. resiliency was a part of the nixon mystique. for governor of california 1962, it seems like it was finished in all but forgotten, but in less than two years he was on his way again, to one of the most important offices in the world. there are two clues to this modern political mixed miracle. in his origins, on a farm in california, and in his statements, where he has expressed, his concept of the role of the presidency. given insight into his views, on the position of government. in discussing his administration, he says the presidency is a place where priorities are set and go to term. the presidents chief function is to lead, to put the right people in charge, to give them guidance and direction, and let them do their job. at the moment of his great electoral triumph, he called the american people the greatest objective of this administration, is to bring the american people together. this will be an open administration. open to new ideas, open to men and women of both parties. open to our critics, as well as those who support us. in a letter to the governor of new york, he wrote we must never forget, the strength of america is not in its government, but in its people. there is no limit to the goals that america can reach, provided we stay true to the great position of the people. addressing a meeting of international journalists, nixon said, we extend a friend of friendship to all peoples. to the chinese people, 12 people of the world, and we shall work towards the goal of an open world, open skies, open cities, open hearts, began to work as soon as he was old enough to get a job as a been picker in the fields. he pump gas, cut potatoes, and delivered groceries. hannah nixon, and grandmother mill house, taught him the meaning of charity. and frank taught his son to work and to succeed. in his sophomore year at wittier college, he represented the school in one of the 50 debates, most of which he won. he also played football for his school. president of the student body and also in school in sports, he moved from california. years before he had told his mother, he would be an old-fashioned kind of lawyer, the kind that can't be bought, and he proved true to his word. back in with year after law school, he met trisha ryan, a pretty young treat teacher. pat ryan, worked in a department store, dumb and movies. richard nixon courted her with the same initiation he had for his law practice, and then they were married. after the united states entered world war ii, nixon joined the navy, and served with distinction, and he rose to ranks to lieutenant commander. the end of the second world war mark the beginning of richard nixon's political life, he was sought out at a as a candidate for congress, in with your california. a rough and tumble campaign, in which he defeated his opponent in debates, and had a success full victory. nixon his rise to prominence as a member of a select -- that formulated the marshall plan, he created an interest in foreign policy. nixon also was placed on the house american activities committee, where he played a significant role in the -- . his investigative work led to serve -- the past secret government documents to a foreign agent. he had established him as one of the brightest young man in his party by 1952. when general eisenhower began looking for a vice president running mate, he thought that nixon could add more strength to the ticket than any other republican in the cabinet. but some newspapers spoke caution about that, saying he had irregularities in his campaign. general eisenhower was urged to drop nixon from stick it, but he was decided his running mate should be given a chance to defend himself before the nation on radio and television. there was overwhelming public support for him and saved his political life. when nixon took office as eisenhower's vice president in 1953, he was part of a new generation of republican politicians. only one other vice president in history had been younger, and none have been able to do the same as nixon did for himself. as the 1954 congressional elections approached, he said he was bone tired, as he fought his political voice from taking its toll. but he won the campaign for every political elected in the country. he had worked harder than he had ever worked for himself. of all the tests, nixon faced as vice president, none was more crucial than his conduct during president eisenhower serious illnesses while he was president. afterward ike had said, that no man heads was better prepared than richard nixon to carry out the presidential duties and nixon fill the. void without giving the appearance of taking over. >> in the meantime, the business of government will continue. under an administration, organized by the president, to operate effectively in his absence. and the people of america, the people of other countries, can be sure that the united states will continue to go forward under the eisenhower forum, and domestic policy. protests >> with a mandate from eisenhower, nixon rework the idea of the vice presidency. he presided over security council meetings, he worked with congressional leaders in support of the administrative legislative programs. and shared some of those responsibilities with president eisenhower. this was a position of great responsibility and importance. along with their mutual friendship, eisenhower's respect for nixon grew steadily. he gave him more and more duties. among the most important, were nixon's far ranging very foreign assignments. he met the people in those countries, and discussed varying philosophies with their leaders. the most publicized, during nixon travels june was in 1958 and 59. first was in latin america, then in the soviet union. nixon and his wife were attacked by communist organized mobs, that threaten their safety. the attacks were severe test that the of the vice presidents courage and judgment, and it won him the respect of latin america for his cool reaction. the famous kitchen debate, between nixon and the key to khrushchev happened by accident. he impressed the soviets with statement. that >> many americans thought that nixon had won the test with the soviet premier. nixon uses logic and language and many consider him and intellectual introvert. not unlike woodrow wilson. as early as 1958, nixon had received the republican presidential nomination, and he swept aside challenges, by rockefeller of new york, and goldwater of arizona. in his acceptance speech, he told the delegates, we shall build a better america, and he added, i believe in the american dream, because i have seen it come through in my own life. but for the first time in his political career, nixon was to learn the meaning of defeat. in 1960, after his historic television debates, he lost the presidency, to john f. kennedy but one of the smallest margins in the united states history. >> i want to say, that one of the great things of america, is that we had a contest, and it was hard fought as this one was hard-fought. and once a decision is made, we unite behind the man, who is elected. >> but there were even darker days ahead for nixon. after the defeat by kennedy, he soon found that private life, lacked the -- public office. in seeking the governorship of california, against pat brown, he sought to establish a new base in the leadership of the republican party. when nixon was defeated by brown, he was deeply disappointed. he seemed to feel that his time in american politics had come and gone. in may 1963, nixon moved to new york, and became a partner in a prominent law firm. but despite two disappointing defeats, in a satisfying law practice in new york, nixon love the political arena. when senator barry goldwater called for his help for his presidential campaign, nixon replied. he chose to pay to play the role of peacemaker, between the democratic and republican factions of the party. the republican party, -- in the 1966 off year election. elected or reelected by authorities, were governor rockefeller of new york, governor romney of michigan. governor reagan of california, senator brooks, a massachusetts. senator percy of illinois. the future look brighter, nixon had a decisive factor factor in the resurgence. by service to the the united states of america. few men have served their country, and their party with nixon's incredible energy and devotion. every presidency, is known by the character of the man who holds it. by the people he chooses to run the government, and by the political realities, of the age. the key to nixon's presidency, lies in the simple family life he has a boy in california, his generous gifts of time and energy, nixon applied the lessons taught by his family. his studies, nixon worked 16 hour days before he was 16 years old. making his way in the world, and developing the independence and determination for what he is known today. in his private life or hidden his public life, he's never relented. he knows from bitter experience, that no great victories is one without some defeats along than when he nearly lost the presidents in 1960. he's grown in confidence, become more detached from judgment, he views himself as the defender of the political middle, against extremes. he intends to concentrate on foreign affairs, although the first order of business he has said is to unify the nation. by his victory, nixon has already accomplished the -- he brings to the presidency vast
