So the ship had to stay about a mile and a half out in the harbor, what is now known as the cows yard. Also behind me is Plymouth Rock, the famous landing place of the pilgrims in december of 1620. We dont know where the rock was either. Its been moved so many times. The first time the story gets told that the pilgrims landed at length rock was in 1741. An elderly man heard that they were about to put a up down here at the waterfront, and he was despairing. And he said to the young men, could you take me down there one more time, so i can see where the first ones landed . They put him in a chair and carried this elderly man down in the chair and he tapped the rock with his cane and said this is where they landed. And people who saw this were so profoundly moved, they cut a hole in the peer when it was made so people could. Down at the rock. But over pier when it was made so people could peer down at the rock. The overtime, it was moved moved. R time, it was at the time of the civil war, it was moved back here. What you see behind me is the greek temple that was built for the 1920 300th anniversary. And Plymouth Rock is down inside a grading. That is the rock that the elder originally identified as Plymouth Rock. It is smaller than it was. It has shattered overtime. It has been picked at overtime. A great writer on american democracy, when he visited in the 1830s, he essentially said everywhere i went, people had a piece of the rock on their mental. On their mantle. A great naval historian said its not that they landed on Plymouth Rock. But if you think about a great massive piece of granite, a pilot could be told you want to head toward that rock. So youre not landing on that rock, but thats where you want to be. They did, both at jamestown and at the mithra. Lets look in at Plymouth Rock. Lets look in at the plymouth colony. In december of 1620, 101 pilgrims from england reached the Atlantic Coast in the mayflower. But to gain religious freedom for themselves. They had no preconceived ideas about building a nation, society, or a system of economics. Problemn consent, the is the Economic System was communal. The property was community property, or public property, owned in effect by the colonys government. The people worked together at assigned tasks. They shared and shared alike in the total production of the colony. It worked like this. There was a common storehouse. Each family brought all its produce at whatever time to the storehouse. The government of the colony allocated the goods on the basis of equal shares for all. This was the christian spirit of sharing. Our forefathers were people basically motivated by christian principles. Many of them felt that they could live under this communal arrangement and have full freedom also. They thought they had an ideal Economic System. Even among these dedicated christians, however, their great measure of freedom, the theory of government ownership of property and communal living did not work in practice. A few of the less industrious colonists discovered that no matter how little they produced and carried to the common storehouse, they still received a share equal with their neighbors.
