[silence] [applause] at the front base of the speakers stand, there is a bag of balloons. Somebody is standing right over it. That will be fun. Job, balloongood buster. The sergeant norms are clearing the aisles. On the stand with senator goldwater are his two sons, daughters, and brothersinlaw. [applause] mr. Goldwater thank you. [cheering] mr. Goldwater thank you. Hymn of theattle republic] glory, glory hallelujah. Glory, glory hallelujah. His truth is marching on. Glory, glory, hallelujah. Glory, glory, hallelujah. Truth is marching on [applause] [chanting] mr. Goldwater hello. [cheering] my good friends, great republicans, nixon, and your charming wife, pat. , that wonderful republican who has served us for so well and for so long. Bill miller and his wife, stephanie. Kristen, who has done such a time a commendable job. In sharing, this can chairing this convention. [applause] who i amrbert hoover told is watching. [applause] and, that great american, and his wife, general and misses eisenhower. [applause] to my own wife, my family, and to all of my fellow republicans and americans across this great nation. From this moment, united and determines, we will go forward together, dedicated to the ultimate and undeniable greatness of the whole man. Willher together we win. [applause] i accept your nomination with a deep sense of humility. [cheering] accept the responsibility that goes with it, and i think i seek your continued help and guidance. Causelow republicans, are is too great for any our cause is too great for any man to feel worthy of it. Our task would be to great for any man if he did not have the heart and hands of this great Republican Party. Tonight, that every fiber of my being is concentrated to our cause that nothing shall be lacking but the struggle that can be brought to devotion, andsm, plain hard work. [applause] in this world, no person, no party can guarantee anything, but what we can do, and what we victory is to deserve and victory will be ours. [applause] the good lord raised this mighty republic to be a home for the brave and to flourish as the land of the free, not to stagnate in the swampland of bow to them, not to bullying of communism. [applause] and now, my fellow americans, the tide has been running against freedom. Our people has followed false shallts, and we must and return to proven ways, not because they are old, but because they are true. [applause] we must, and we shall get the tides running again in the cause of freedom. [applause] and, this party, with its every every wrath, word, and heartbeat has but a single every breath, and heartbeat has a single resolve. That is freedom. [applause] orderly for this nation by our Constitutional Government. Freedom under a government limited by the laws of nature, and of natures god. Thatom to balance so order, lacking delivery liberty, would not become slavery. Balance so that liberty lacking order will not become the license of a mob and a jungle. [applause] now, we americans understand. We have earned it. It, and weed for have died for it. This nation and its people are freedoms model in a searching world. We can be freedoms missionaries in a doubting world. Gentlemen, first we must renew freedoms vision in our own hearts and in our own homes. [applause] during four futile yellows, the years, the administration we shall replace [applause] has distorted and lost that vision. Talked, thed and words of freedom, but it has failed and failed in the worst works of freedom. Now, failures cement the wall of shame in berlin, failures blocked the bay of pigs, failures marked the slow death of freedom in laos, failures infest the jungles of vietnam, and failures haunt the houses of our once great alliances and undermined the greatest cohort nations, ted by free the nato community. [applause] proclaim leadership, obscure purkett purpose, weekends the will weakens the will and insights are enemies to new excesses. Because of this administration becalmed. Ation we have lost the brisk pace of diversity and the genius of individual creativity. We are plodding along at a pace set by centralized planning, responsibilities, and regimentation without resource. [applause] rather than useful jobs in our country, our people have been offered fewer pat bureaucratic makework. Rather than moral leadership, they have been given read and circumcise, spectacles bread and circuses, spectacles, and scandals. [applause] tonight, there is violence in our streets, corruption in our highest offices, aimlessness amongst our youth, anxiety among our elders and a virtual despair among the many who look beyond material success for the inner meanings of their lives. Where examples of morality should be set, the opposite is seen. Small men seek during seeking power have too often and too long have entered into the highest levels of Public Service and turn them into personal opportunity. [applause] now, certainly, simple honesty is not too much to command of men in government. We find it in most. Republicans demanded from everyone. [applause] they demand it from everyone no matter how exalted or protect did his position might be protected his position might be. [applause] menace in our country tonight to personal safety, to life, limb, and churches, and homes, playgrounds, and places of business, particularly in great cities is the mounting concern or should be of every thoughtful citizen of the united states. [applause] security from domestic violence, no less than from foreign aggressive and Dutch Foreign aggression is the most fundamental purpose of any government. And it is a government that cannot fulfill this purpose is one that cannot command the loyalty of its citizens. [applause] history shows us and demonstrates that nothing, nothing prepares the way for tyranny more than the failure of Public Officials to keep the streets safe from bullies and marauders. [applause] now, we republicans see all of more as are, much result of mere political differences or mere political restate mistakes. We see this as a result of a wrong view of man, his nature, and destiny. [applause] those who seek to live their lives your lives for you and take your liberties in return for relieving you of yours, those who elevate the state and downgrade the citizen must see ultimately a world in which earthly power can be substituted for divine will, and this nation [applause] nation was founded upon the rejection of that notion, and upon the acceptance of god as the author of freedom. [applause] now, those who seek absolute power, even though they seek it to do what they regard as good are simply demanding the right to enforce their own version of heaven on earth. [applause] and, let me remind you, they are the very ones who will always create the most hellish tierneys. Tyranies. [applause] power does corrupt and those who seek it must be opposed. Their mistaken course cap stems from false notions of equality. Understood astly our Founding Fathers understood it leads to liberty and to the emancipation of creative differences. As it hasderstood, been so tragically in our time, it leads to conformity, and then despotism. [applause] fellow republicans, it is because of republicanism to resist concentrations of power, private or public. [applause] which enforce such conformity and inflict such despotism. Republicanismof to ensure that power remains in the hands of the people. [applause] and, so help us god, that is exactly what a republican president will do with the rate with the help of a republican congress. [cheering] it is further the cause of republicanism to restore its clear understanding of the tyr the of man over man in world at large. It is our cause to dissolve the foggy thinking that a world of conflict will mysteriously resolve itself into a world of harmony. If we do not just rock the boat or irritate the foursomes forces of aggression. And this is hogwash. [cheering] cause ofther, the republicanism to remind ourselves and the world that only the strong can remain free, t only the strong can [applause] now, i neednt remind you or my fellow americans, regardless of party, that the republicans have shouldered this hard responsibility and marched in this cause before. It was Republican Leadership under Dwight Eisenhower that passed along to this administration the mightiest arsenal for defense that the world has ever known. [applause] you thatednt remind it was the strength and the will of the eisenhower years that kept the peace by using our in theh, by using it formosa straits, and in lebanon, and by showing it courageously at all times. [applause] it was during those republican years that the thrust of communist imperialism was blunted. It was during those years of Republican Leadership that this ,orld moved closer not to war but closer to peace than at any other time in the past three decades. [cheering] and, i neednt remind you, but i will, that it has been during democratic years that our strength has stood still and even gone into a planned decline. It has been during democratic years that we have weakly stumbled into conflicts, refusing to draw our own lines against aggression and refusing to tell even our own people of andfull participation tragically, letting our finest men die on battlefields unmarked provide, or the prospect of victory of pride, or the prospect of victory. [applause] yesterday, it was korea. Tonight, it is vietnam. About this, do not try to sweep this under the rug. We are at war in vietnam. [applause] and, yet the president , who is commanderinchief of our forces refuses to say, refuses, mind you, whether or not the object of his victory, and his secretary of defense continues to mislead and misinform the american people. Enough of it has gone by. [applause] you thatednt remind it has been during democratic one billion persons were cast into communist captivity and their fate sealed. Today in our beloved country we have an administration which seemed eager to deal with wheat,sm from gold, consulates, and even human freedom itself. [applause] now the republican cause demands that we brand communism as the principal disturber of peace in the world today. [applause] indeed, we should brand it as the only significant disturber of the piece and make clear that arel its goals of conquest absolutely pronounced and its relations with all nations tempered, communism and the governments in control and the government in control are enemies of every man on earth who is, and wants to be free. [applause] now, we here in america can keep the peace, only if we remain vigilant and only if we remain strong, only if we keep our eyes open and keep our guard up can we prevent war. [applause] and, i want to make this abundantly clear, i do not freedomo let peace or be torn from our grasp because of lack of strength, or lack of will, and that i promise you americans. [cheering] i believe that we must look beyond the defense of freedom today to its extension tomorrow. I believe that the communism that boasts that it will bury us will instead give way to the forces of freedom. [applause] and, i can see in the distance and recognizable future the outlines of a world worthy of anddedication, every risk, every effort, and sacrifice along the way. That will redeem the suffering of those who will be limited liberated from trya tyranny. I can see, and i suggest that all men contemplate the flowering of an atlantic civilization, europe united, trading and communicating across the world. [applause] this is a goal far more meaningful than any moonshot. [applause] it is a truly inspiring goal for all free men to set for themselves during the latter half of the 20th century. Men must, and all free go towards the advance of this atlantic civilization. Destiny, what a destiny can be ours to stand as a great, pillar, peer, europe europe, the americas and vital peoples of the pacific. I can see a day when all of the americas north and south will be linked in a mighty system, a system in which the errors and misunderstandings of the past will be submerged one by one in a rising tide of prosperity and interdependence. We know that the misunderstandings essentially are not to be wiped away in a hour, but we pledge that human sympathy with our neighbors to the south call and attitude of sympatico. Enlightened self interest will be our guide. [applause] i can say see this atlantic civilization galvanizing and helping emergent civilizations everywhere. I know freedom is not the fruit of every soil. I know our freedom was achieved through centuries through efforts of brave and wise men. I know the road to freedom is a long and challenging road, and i know that some men may walk away from it and some resist challenge, accepting the false security of governmental paternalism. [applause] and i pledge that the america i envision in the years ahead will extend a hand in help and help in teaching so that all new nations will be at least encouraged to go our way, so that they will not wander down a dark alley of tyranny or the dead end streets of collectivism. [applause] my fellow republicans, we do know man a service by hiding under 8 light under a pushover of humility. [applause] i speak, and america, proud of its past and ways, proud of its dreams, and determined actively to proclaim them. World,r example to the must like charity, must begin at home. [applause] in our vision of a good and decent future, free and peaceful, there must be room for deliberation of the energy and talent of the individual, otherwise our vision is blind at the outset. We must ensure a society here, whilewilde every which never abandoning the needy and the helpless, nurture incentives for the creative. [applause] we must know the whole good is the product of many single contributions. Cherish the day when our children once again will restore as heroes the sort of men and women are are not afraid and undaunted, pursue the truth. Strive to cure disease, subdue and make crystal our Natural Environment and produce the engines of science and technology. [applause] this nation, whose creative people has enhanced this entire span of history, should again thrive upon the greatness of all those things which we as individual citizens can and should do. And during republican years, this again will be a nation of men and women, of families proud theirir role, jealous of responsibilities, unlimited in their aspirations. A nation where all who can will be selfreliant. [applause] we republicans see in our constitutional form of great framework that ensures the orderly but dynamic fulfillment of the whole man, and we see the whole man as the great reason for instituting orderly governments in the first place. Andee in private property, an economy based upon fostering private property, one way to make government and ally of the whole man rather than his determined enemy. [applause] we see in the sanctity of private property the only Durable Foundation for Constitutional Government in a free society. [applause] and, beyond that, we see in chairs to diversity of ways, of thought, and accomplishments. We do not seek to live anyones life for them. We only seek to secure his rights, guarantee him opportunities. Guarantee him opportunity to strive with government performing only those needed and constitutionally sanctioned tasks which cannot otherwise be performed. [applause] we republicans seek a government that attends to its responsibilities, maintaining a stable monetary and fiscal climate, encouraging a free and competitive economy, and enforcing law order. [applause] thus, do we seek inventiveness, diverse of the, diversity, and creative difference in a stable order. We republicans defined governments role as needed in many many levels, preferably, the one closest to the people involved. [applause] our towns and cities, then our counties, then our states, then ,ur regional compaq compacts and then and only then the national government. [applause] that, let me remind you is the ladder of liberty billed by decentralized power. Audit also we must have balance between the branches of government at every level. [applause] balance, diversity, creative difference, these are the elements of the republican equation. Heartily. S agree on many of their applications, but we have never ,isagreed on the basic fundamental issues of why you and i are republicans. [applause] this is a party, this Republican Party is a party of free men, not for blind followers and conformists. [applause] in fact, in 1858, a broken Abraham Lincoln said this of the Republican Party. And i quote him because he couldve said it during the last week or so. Strange, omposed of discordant, and hostile elements. That is a quote from 1958. All of these elements agreed on one paramount objective, to arrest the progress of slavery and place it in the course of ultimate extinction. Then, more urgently and more broadly than than, the task of preserving and enlarging freedom at home and safeguarding it from the forces of tierney big enough to is challenge all of our resources and strengths. [applause] anyone who joins with us in all sincerity, we welcome. [applause] those who do not care for our cause, we do not expect to enter our ranks, in any case. [cheering] and, let our republicanism so focused and dedicated not be made fuzzy and futile by unthinking and stupid labels. [applause] i would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no bias. [applause] [cheering] thank you. Let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue. [applause] the system we republicans have pledged to restore and. Evitalize in honestt see malice differences of opinion. So long as they are not inconsistent with the pledges we have given to each other in and through our constitution. Our republican cause is not to make our people conform, our republican cause is to free our people and light the way for liberty throughout the world. Ours is a very human because for a very humane goal. People, andts good itsquenchable unquenchable devotion to freedom. And shows theorld way to a tomorrow worthy of our yesteryears. I accept your nomination with humbleness, pride, and you and i are going to fight for the goodness. Thank you. [applause] Lyndon Johnson accepts his parties nomination at the 1964 Democratic Convention in new jersey. He went on to defeat Barry Goldwater in the general election. He has a message to give to you, the american people. Pres. Johnson chairman mccormack, my fellow americans i accept your nomination
