Thank you to the choir heres a man whose mastery of the english language is only second to scully. I cant tell you the feeling that comes over me standing here as i am. Face to face when one of those chosen men in history, you know from personal experience, the glory, frustrations, sometimes agony, that all too often go along as the price of the high office that you sought and to which you were duly elected, and reelected. The president of the screen actors guild. All of us in the sports casting business spill a, deal a special bond to you, mister dutch, after all you were a member of the club. Indeed you spent five years on Radio Station in des moines, recreating chicago club games. You told me a story, wonderful story. I would love to tell a story myself, but i know it wouldnt be nearly as good. And i just have a feeling that somebody in this room, somebody might really tell the story the way it should be told. I dont see any volunteers, so it looks like it is a down to you and me, dutch. What do you say . What do you say . . Well could i set the stage for a second, and explain, when you did a baseball game by telegraphic, report it meant you werent at the ballpark to get the game. You are looking at a studio, at a desk, with the microphone, there was another guy on the other side of the window with a telegraph key, during the, dashes and he would, type sent a slip of paper due to you. You would take it and it would have a few letters, you would say, dean comes out, here comes the pitch, the call strike, work outside. Will this particular story that i have been dragoon into telling happened at a cubs and cardinal game, which in the midwest is really drama. It was the ninth inning, score tied, and i saw my friend curly on the other side of the window start to type, so i had dean start his wind up, and i had a ball on the way to the plate, and clearly was shaking his head know, and i thought something sensational happened, then he sent me a slip of paper that says, the wire has gone dead. I had a ball on the way to the plate. Theres only one thing you can do that wont get on the record, i had your just follow one off to the left, and clearly just shrugged. If you dont have an announcer for a team, for the, game there would be half a dozen of us on different stations doing the same game. So everyone switch to another station. I took a chance, and i was followed to first base. Clearly its still sitting there slumped and, waiting that i missed one to the left that just miss being a home run by a foot. Then he felt one back into the stance and i described the fight. This went on for a long time. I knew that i had to keep on. If i now said the wire has gone dead, they would know i was thinking on all of these foul balls. So i had him towel in a few more directions. In the meantime i had dizzy dean on the mount stepping back, stepping back, im getting another sign and taking up time, and all of a sudden curly set up and started to type. He handed me the slip of paper, and i started to giggle. It said, your against pumped out at the first ball pitched. There was another first for this evening. It a man who doesnt even know he is here. Mr. Dean martin. Where is burst . Birds, it is a pleasure to be here for your dinner tonight. Listen, think, gong we honored him four years ago. So i made a mistake. And this is for you, clutch. Are you kidding . Ronny and me. I call him ronny, he calls me genie. You know, in 1988, youre going to be out of work, but i will still be drunk. Where is the and company yes . Not only is he knew me my accompany is, but he also plays piano for me. Me i state, its been great, and a night like this, few people waits, but i must admit it all. Its mr. Wonderful, thats me. I suppose people would go crazy if they heard such bravo. But i must repeat in all modesty, mr. Wonderful. Stony. I drink a toast to him each night, as you might think, not because i wish him well, but because i love to drink. So will you, all in this final raise a glass, to the champ of them all . Here is to dutch and his nancy as well. Mr. Wonderful. I yeah, mr. Wonderful. Mr. Wonderful, thats you. Yeah applause our 1981 variety club henry, mr. Burton reynolds. Look at that center table, i really would not want your job. I dont think any of us here have to worry about that. Hi, nancy. Hi, dutch. You changed ages, didnt you . Dutch and i have a lot in common. We both played college football. I played at florida state. Dutch played at eureka. Florida state is going to the gator bowl. Did eureka get a bowl bid . And of course we both made westerns. I made four westerns, dutch made four westerns, cowboy from brooklyn in 1938, and jean from texas, santa fe trail, 1940, and cattle queen of montana in 1955. All of them. I was going to do a remake of cattle queen of montana, but they wanted me to play the title role. In the early 19 fifties, that went into television, hosting General Electric theater and death valley days. He parlay to Television Series into a lot better job. I parlayed two terrible Television Series into another Terrible Television seniors. He then spent eight years at the Branch Office in sacramento before being called to headquarters back east. And i think we should be grateful for that. applause okay. Two very Gifted Talented young men, Emmanuel Lewis and ben varying. Hooray for hollywood data data huawei, hurray for hollywood. How are you doing, dutch . This is great, a guy from, brooklyn, calling the president dutch. How are you, honey . Fine. Thank you all. And you know something . How would you like to take a trip with me to geneva . I think you could do the job, you really could. God bless you all. A medley of love songs, love songs to america, and they write the history of this night. Here to the happiest kids in town, stephen e. D. Steve and eydie. steve and eydie sing every hour of life has its own moment of truth. And who better to bring it to our attention than the man who part of the red sea . Chuck casten. You know, when i got here tonight, i wasnt certain what to expect, except for a great party. Writing clubs in Prince Albert kind of guarantee that. For the president in the first lady, on a first name basis, its a great idea, just like the old days. Actually, back to the screen actors guild, it wasnt dutch, it was ron or ronny to the old hands. I was new on the board then. We were in the middle of a tough strike and when we do the negotiating team, and i remember coming home very late one night after a long session, 4 am, and honey, i, said weve got a leader. Yeah, you could say that. Thats about thinking about when i watch the two of them come into the room tonight, but they walk a road now that we cant possibly know, and they walk it for us. A little less than five years ago in washington, at the ceremonies marking his first inauguration, i said, tomorrow at high noon on the steps of the capitol, one man will take in his hand the most awesome power and influence ever held by a single human being. He will be thenceforth forever wrapped in legend, in myth. He will also pick up a burden of responsibility that has no known counterpart in the civilized world. Ronald ragan will become the lineal descendent of washington and adams, jefferson and jackson, lincoln, wilson, roosevelt. With them, he will be linked to the very birthdate of this republic, and so he has. So he has. So here we are tonight, his friends. We watch him laugh, we see nancys foot tap to the music, but we know, sir, you are us. To the world, you are america. Your yes is our yes, your no is ours. You are every man and woman in this nation. You speak to mankind in our name. You carry the torch that was flamed by packet by patrick henrys passion for liberty, tom paynes common sense and Tom Jeffersons uncommon wisdom, linked by the memory of those soldiers known and unknown whose bodies, in your words, lie in the only foreign soil this country occupies. The president , what do we pray for him . What do we wish for him, and from him . What can he pledge to us, what can we say to help him . American writers have spoken eloquently to this question, thomas wolfe, william faulkner, f scott fitzgerald, have said it is a fabulous country, the only fabulous country where miracles can happen all the time. I refused to accept the end of man, he will prevail because alone among all creatures he has a soul, spirit capable of compassion and endurance, and sacrifice. In this country there is a willingness of the heart, and as you lead us into the uncertain, beleaguered future na brought future in a broad swell between those shining seas, let me say this in words of a song you will remember. God shed his grace on thee. Once again, ladies and gentlemen, it is my pleasure to introduce the International Chairman of Variety Clubs International, mr. Monty hall. Dutch, i feel funny saying dutch. It is strange, and must say. For allowing Variety Clubs International to televise this party and your honor, you join our humanitarian call of fame. Now, ladies and gentlemen, i give you, our friend, dutch. Well. It is good to be dutch again, and its wonderful to be surrounded by so many fine and talented friends. To paraphrase jack kennedy, there has not been so much talent assembled in one room since the last time that monte hall hosted lets make a deal. Seriously, nancy and i have watched these parties over the years, and we are thrilled to be a part of the good work at the righty clubs international. I something lucy said last, year its the way i feel right now. Lets hope i can quote her accurately. To those of you who said such nice things about me tonight, i just wish you were all under of. In scully, you brought back a lot of happy memories, and muddy, haul the voice of variety club, thank you for your presentation, and mike, you share this words of gratitude. Everybody knows how devoted you are to variety. And ben vereen, you guessed your way into americas heart. Emmanuel lewis, which never lose sight of what you said, even if sometimes we lose sight of you. There you are, manny. And that was a lovely sentiment that was expressed by the International Childrens choir. Chuck heston, i knew you had Leadership Qualities when i saw you play moses. You were eloquent and gracious in your remarks about me. As a guard on eureka varsity, thank you. To all of you associated with the good work of variety, you have our eternal gratitude for arranging this party, for all of the good work you have done in your halfcentury of giving and caring, for those who need it the most, the innocent children of the world. Having my name associated with your good work, the university of nebraska Medical Center will always have a special place in my heart, and i think you all, very much. And now, speaking for nancy as well as myself, to all of you here and to all americans everywhere, paraphrasing something that moses said earlier, god shed his grace on each of thee. Thank you. For nancy and dutch, go with our prayers and a song, a song that says it all. Maybe have a bell tone please. Auld Lang Syne production assistance furnished by panamerican world airways.
