In recent years on the big picture Television Series we have been privileged to report on the progress of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, nato. Today we turn to this same subject. Only this time in a film originally produced by nato. It is a documentary, it is history in the making. It is a story about the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and its accomplishments since its birth more than 10 years ago. In this organization we have determined a deterrent and great capability of great constructive power we are all partners and have an appropriate part to play in international security. Today, tomorrow, for the indeterminate future. December 16, 1967, a date to remember. For the first time 15 chiefs of government gather around one table. Eisenhower, mack millen, mandeles, dr. Conrad. These men and their countries have sometimes been at war with each other. Often they have been united against a common enemy. But here in nato for the first time in history they are united in peace and for peace. Of which men and women can freely exercise their inalienable right to life, liberty and the pure suit of happiness. Peace is built of hope and faith, greens and hard work, of paper as well as of steel, and of an infinite capacity for details and organization. And that is the job of the permanent secretariat of nato. High ranking ministers meet only rarely, but natos work for peace goes on daily in the permanent counsel. The leaders of nato are chosen for their own ability and not for the size and power of their countries. Belgium, one of the smallest nato nations, has provided its secretarygeneral. These men represent more than 400 million people. People diverse in background and in their way of life. Brussels, capital of belgium has become the provisional capital of economic europe. An Alliance Within the alliance. Gradually a series of interlocking communities has developed giving new vigor to old economies. Town hall of amsterdam. The dutch are a hardy people with a sense of history. From the treaty to the north atlantic treaty, they have fought against threats both manmade and natural. Old luxembourg, smallest nato partner with castles out of a fairy tale. But theres nothing imaginary about its fabulous steel industry. Steel production per capita is the highest in the world. The peoples of these three small countries belgium, the netherlands and luxembourg have formed a customs union. A wheat field, a cathedral, old france. Theres a new france alive with energy, with the biggest hidroelectric stations in europe and the Fastest Trains in the world. Mass production in the land of the artisan, power, and beauty in modern france. From the joy of life to the preservation of life, france, the country of pasture. Paris open to students of all colors and all nations. The world. The British Commonwealth. The center of the free world trade. Britain is one of the worlds leading economic powers. Britain is like Nothing Better than a hard fought game. A symbol of the unity of britain is the trinity of church, and the trial crown. The queen opens the session of parliament in canada, with the same as home. The British Commonwealth is the oldest, largest voluntary association of freemen in world history. Britain and germany have fought two terrible wars. Their peoples are united for peace. In the small town, there is a new german capital. For them, the traditional capital, is now an outpost. A beacon for those that live in the great silence of the eastern plane. 14 years after the war, there still tens of thousands of refugees. Victims of old and new. The entire world has been it a so much by the resurgence of germany. By the urge to live and build. This makes germany one of the most prosperous countries in europe and in the atlantic. Nowhere is the contrast between the old and the new so striking as in ancient rome. Faith in the lease future burns bright. There building a strong new industry. Italian cars. The most luxurious to the most, and least expensive are in demand throughout the world. They are riding scooters. Italian vehicles of all types, speed down the highways. From south to north, from cars to bicycles, from italy to denmark. From copenhagen, one of the most beautiful and hospitable cities. Cleanliness is not only a virtue, it is a way of life for the danes. And no citizen need fear of old age in denmark or normandy. The midnight sun. The northernmost of the allies. Is people are ragged. Strong. Norwegians are rugged, but peaceful. Tranquil. Just beyond their homes, the soviet border and the barb wires of a very different life. Iceland does not have an army. But it is an invaluable base in the north atlantic. Between european and american is partners in nado. Icelanders feel strongly about definition. Freedom to disagree. The basic human freedoms. One of the basic freedoms about the alliance. They do not quarrel. Nato nations. Nowhere in the world does freedom fly higher or higher than canada. A vast region of thick forest and mineral wells. Canada is infertile and rich and generous. Canadians have sent their fruits of labor. Canadian defense provides a vital link in the alliance. The largest landmass in nado, it has buried terrain. British and french influences are part of modern canada. And the open front there, the United States. In america, i sought the image of democracy itself. Its inclination, its character, its passions. The image of the democracy is often distorted. The world is fascinated by american power. And really looks on the other instances of america. The libraries. Its arts. Its rich and diverse culture. Its free expressor of its citizens. The informality. The religious heritage. And the traditional sports. The hard pick. And no the hard work. American giant corporations are owned by many stock owners. The tremendous output of these companies are a vital part of national life. Their products, field, river and now rain. This means variety and an easier life. Friends, energy, movement, these are important. From the new world to the old. A journey through the ages. Portuguese fishermen pulling the boats down the sea for centuries. From portugal, sailors from the great explorers of history, opening new routes to france. Old traditions, but modern roads. Modern homes. A modern capital. The most ancient capital of europe, the cradle of western civilization, athens. A beautiful birthplace. This ancient alliance of greek city states, successfully resisted the aggression of the east. But the world among themselves. Over trade and fishing rights and islands. Today modern athens is alive with new life and new vigor. And just across the border, turkey. Southern and eastern most anchor of nado. Turkey is another civilization menaced by old aeros, but alive with new vigor. And everywhere people are busy learning new ways. Many years ago turkey tore off the veil and liberated. Now working sidebyside with their men. Building a new nation. Hoping someday to be free of ancient. Peer may have been the cement of nado, but hope is its superstructure and freedom its fate. Men may argue and quarrel and by communist paper, which denounced nado. They are free to buy it. Freedom has prevailed. Since nado was born, not one foot of free soil has been dropped. The post war world began with a hunger for peace and for home. Window solution began to set in, shortly after the war. The liberation brought slavery to some countries. But there were some brave to the east. The democrats edward. And who attempted the impossible. After prague, a new target berlin. 1948, the year of fear. The western people have not wanted this. But this time the west acted. This time they decided to join together in a new alliance. In the states, western civilization. Nato was born. Soldiers in a cold war, armed to guard which was threatened. At their head, the president of a Great American university. Establishing headquarters outside of paris. The new nato alliance. Here, they began planning the complex of military headquarters. In oslo, norway, the northern command, integrated international staff, danes and norwegians under a general, defense for your. Europe. Central european command. Here there is a french commander in chief under three commanders. Undersea, land and air. They guard the very heart of europe. Naples, the headquarter on the southern flank. The base for the american six fleet. The historic british base, headquarters for the nato forces for five nato companies. And in the United States, supreme allied commanders, home of the u. S. Navy and also International Headquarters on american soil. Symbol of the unity of the western world. And, on the island of britain, the general commands. The royal navy, muskies opened the vital supply of western europe. And at the nato headquarters, these forces are assisted in their task by the royal air force. The defense of the western approaches to the british isles. In 1952, two new nations joined the alliance. Turkey and greece. Greece, with reston threat. And in 1955, germany joined nato. Eisenhower said farewell. Each man, by his presence and his uniform, reasserting americas defense of europe. To learn to act and planned together, colonels and captains went back to school. And to learn to work together, men and women of the alliance learned a common language. Now everyone, open the throttle slowly. Ready, aim. All right. It was hard going for nato in the early days. Men had to break ground. They had to lay pipelines, to feed the machinery of the alliance. A unique experiment in new defense in a time of peace. And the results was powerful. This boy was born the same day, april 4, 1949. If he is grown to be 10 years old, another he or other children, they are strong, healthy and free.
