Students from a democratic society. It has 300 chapters on College Campuses. National and local leaders are in convention at the chicago coliseum in june, 1969, and take major credit for mob action, rioting and burnings on College Campuses throughout the nation. This is defining the organization of sds. We will talk about socialism anywhere, in the streets, anywhere. Secretary of sds and this is bernadine dore, secretary. [indiscernible] narrator are there commune are there communists in this organization . You will see. You can hear people talk and judge for yourself or the people are communists or not. There are communists in the organization, no doubt about that. There are also liberals in the organization. The sds is not something that exists in the school year and is set up again in the fall. We are going to be the streets in every city in this country from now on. We are going to replace capitalism with socialism. Narrator this is the National Revolutionary conference for united fronts against united front against fascism, bringing together students for a democratic society, black panthers and other revolutionary and workingclass student in oakland july 1820, 1960 nine. The purpose of the meeting was to further lenins emphasis on exporting youth to advance communism. He said, youth will decide the entire struggle, student youth and still more, workingclass youth. The voices expose the communist nature of the conference from top representatives of the black panthers, young patriots, sds and communist party usa who were featured on the program. This synchronized sound film was not obtainable for this program, but because what the revolutionaries are saying is vitally important to american security, we are presenting their taped voices, which are properly identified in the film. Representing the black panthers, we are going to fight capitalism with socialistic programs, proletarian is a proletarianism. We need understanding of marxistleninist principles so we can put our revolution into practice. Narrator representing the young patriots. The struggle that is going to ultimately defeat United States imperialism is going to be an international struggle, and armed struggle, a struggle that is going to have to take place in the third world against u. S. Imperialism, and in the mother country against u. S. Imperialism. We must be clear on how the final struggle will be waged and we must be a part of that struggle. Students must open up campuses to the working class, go into workingclass communities, become part of the proletariat and must get ready for armed struggle. This documentary is devoted to an unrelated movement for change, a movement of revolution which openly declares its purpose to be first, the destruction of our American Educational system, then our economic system, and finally our system of government. Let the revolutionaries themselves tell it like it is in this film, communists on campus. This is mark rudd, 1969, elected National Leader of sds at this convention in chicago. This is mark rudd, april, 19 68, Columbia University in new york city. Mark had been named sds president at the campus chapter after a tour of cuba. We have closed down university buildings. We have had mass meetings of 800 and 600 people, respectively. What will be the outcome of this . Is anything negotiable . We think that we will win our demands. We are in a very strong position. We think this is a very strong position. We think we will win our demands. People who were sympathetic now say they are annoyed because you have gone too far. I would say we now have more support of any group on any political issue has ever held at any time. We have the mccarthy group, which has 650 members and is behind us. There are certainly people from offcampus. Our substantive demand involve Community Issues and the institute for defense analyses, it involves worldwide issues and the question of support for United States foreign policy. Narrator sds leader mark rudd later admitted his demands at columbia were a hoax and pretext. According to the National Review he said, we manufactured the issues. The institute of defense analysis is nothing at columbia, just three professors, and the gym issue is bull, doesnt mean anything to anybody. Is sds really interested in columbia . Or is that a steppingstone . Are you concerned much bigger than columbia . Why did you use columbia . I would say the means for both are true. What it is is a training ground, not only a training ground, but one that has immediate relevance. Narrator but the Columbia University confrontation, according to sds leader mark rudd, was a training exercise. And the goal, the takeover by violence of the United States. According to a Los Angeles Times report, 1968, at the height of the student rebellion at columbia, and sds leader was approached by worried moderates who objected to reported plans for using clubs and gasoline against the police. They were told very clearly, you liberals dont understand what the scene is all about. It is about power and disruption. The more blood, the better. Sds leader mark rudd wrote the president of columbia and university, you called ford her, we called for socialism you called for order, we called for socialism. Narrator it paralyzed the university. H. Rap brown, one of the leaders of the student not student democratic coordinating committee, has been all over america. We have been in Hamilton Hall for 56 hours. The brothers maintained they will stay here until the university is willing to talk on their terms, and we are going into the community of harlem to bolster support there, so we will let columbia know that if they dont want to deal with the brothers in here, they are going to deal with brothers on the street. [applause] [crowd cheering] [indiscernible] narrator april 20, 1969, it was parents week at cornell. Often, many parents stay at a hall in the heart of the campus. Some had moved in, and got evicted when black students decided to operate decided to occupy the hall. The blacks were demanding black studies, amnesty and such. Their demands were met and they came out. Then everybody realized the black students were armed during the occupation. They carried at least 17 rifles and guns when they left the hall. Campus police did not try to take the guns away. They were allowed to keep them in their dormitories. It is still not clear who one at cornell, but the black students and the tactics of armed occupation did not lose. We returned to the oakland revolutionary conference. We hear the chair and cofounder of the black Panther Party and one of the organizers of the united front against fascism, bobby seale, also a defendant in the chicago conspiracy trial until given a jail sentence for Disorderly Conduct in the courtroom. And we are going to create and put together in the very near future, and American Liberation front. Narrator bobby seale wants to set up an American Liberation front to parallel the National Liberation front of south vietnam, the hanoisponsored viet cong. With the communist north vietnamese, they have murdered or maimed hundreds of thousands of vietnamese civilians, and over 300,000 american soldiers trying to help keep Southeast Asia from communist subjugation. Mass graves have been uncovered in south vietnam, disclosing over 2000 bodies, most in civilian clothing. Many victims were bound and executed, while some were undeniably buried alive. South vietnamese who managed to escape the atrocities say the victims were mostly teachers, policemen, minor government officials, farmers and some soldiers, and were made to dig their own graves. The black Panther Party, we have been accused of being led by the american communist party. We have been accused of that quite a bit. Narrator bobby seale didnt reply to the accusation the black Panther Party is part of the world communist apparatus, but his minister of information, Eldridge Cleaver, a top voice of the black panthers speaking from communist dominated algiers to which he fled, set the record straight. We are a Marxist Leninist Party and implicit in marxist leninism is proletariat nationalism. David hilliard, panthers chief of staff, added marxist leninism and communism must be the goal. There were many top communists featured with panthers chairman bobby seale. One of them was leading theoretician of communist party usa. I appreciate the honor of speaking here this evening. For me, the honor is multiplied, since J Edgar Hoover has denounced this meetings main initiator, the black Panther Party, as quoting without question the greatest threat to the internal security of the country. [applause] if J Edgar Hoover condemns something, it must be good. And if j edgar huger condemns something in terms of great severity, it must be very good indeed. To be attacked by the chief cop of america is a magnificent tribute. May the black Panther Party in the future continue to merit the diatribes issuing from his foul mouth. Narrator this is the daughter of the speaker, a selfadmitted communist. At the university of california berkeley in fall 1964, with mario savio, shown here, she organized and was one of the leaders of the free speech movement, the beginning of disruption success by communist on american cam innocents on disruption success by communists on american campuses, hoping for the erosion of the American Government and the establishment of kremlinlike leadership in the u. S. She has boasted, and i quote, we will, if necessary, takeover College Campuses is our demands if our demands are not met. The freespeech leaders were loaned to campuses on a . . Flown to campuses on a wellplanned and wellfinanced speaking to her. In new york they were met by the press. The tour was arranged, the speaking part at colleges, by students for a democratic society. Is this a specific problem in your own school . Now, i think this in the near future will begin affecting other campuses. Narrator the leader of the communist party usa emphatically declared, we have the wb the boys w. E. B. Dubois clubs, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee going for us. He could include the black Panther Party and a dozen others. At the university of chicago in 1966, the student Peace Program committee made up of leftists met an answer to an appeal set out by a communist for a nationwide studentfaculty strike. The House Committee on unamerican activities reported, the proposal for the nationwide student strike was completely communist in origin. The aim of the dominant communist element in these movements is to undermine the United States, promote communism in vietnam and generally advanced world communism. The group with the largest representation at the conference was sds. One principal speaker at the conference, the initiator of the idf or a nationwide studentfaculty strike and author of this book, big business and the american university, was patina aflac or patrina. It consists of 15 organizations plus for people from the preparation committee. Organizations include sds, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, the southern christian leadership conference, the young socialists alliance, the w. E. B. Dubois club, the chicago peace council, who are the hosts of the conference, and so forth. What kinds of decisions do you expect . I dont want to preclude anything the conference is going to decide. I want to make a statement that then binds people to it. The purpose of the conferences dude conference is to discuss the possibility of a National Student motivation against the war, the draft, University Participation in the war effort, war research, cia research and so forth done on campuses, and that is the purpose of the conference. And one would hope, although it is not certain it will be discussed, some form of nationally coordinated protest. Narrator you just heard the dictated the issues in 1966, used to this day to rally communists, dissidents and dupes to accelerate the violent overthrow of our country. We have a message from Eldridge Cleaver to all the people in the united front against fascism, and the message is this. Right on. Narrator this is Eldridge Cleaver, convicted felon, fugitive from the california penitentiary. He is one of the top leaders of the black Panther Party, hero of the revolutionary new left. Here in the black Panther Party newspaper, Eldridge Cleaver speaks out to comrades in the u. S. From his hideout in communist cuba. He emphasizes the importance of destruction on College Campuses. He writes, the most sensational and explosive clashes are centered and focused more and more on College Campuses and high school campuses. We must destroy the institutions from which they derive their power. We have to destroy the present structure of power in the United States. We have to overthrow the government, and the only means possible is violent overthrow. This is the voice of the black panthers repeating the communist party line, giving words to actions of todays stormtroopers. Another old guard communist was in the spotlight, archie brown, one of the agitators who led student riots against the House Committee investigating communist activities in the San Francisco area in 1960, the first major exercise of the misuse of student power by communists in the 1960s. The working class will organize and fight in its majority, and it is going to win and lead the way to take over the government and make it a government for the workers and for the people. It is even more so because the emphasis is on working people, who are going to make the change together with everybody else, when the changes going to be made. [applause] and one of the proposition was propositions was that anybody who is a communist, which i was and dam, i think we can win the working class and unions against fascism and progress against fascism and for progress in this country. Narrator you have just heard communist archie brown calling for progress and socialism. What he really is calling for is regressive totalitarianism as practiced by communism forever in power in the world wherever in power in the world today. The next speaker, secretary of sts jeff jones, announces sds policy. The fight that is being waged on the campuses, when it is waged solely on campuses, is a fight that can end up only on the campuses. That is not where we are at at all. That is not where we as an organization, young revolutionaries, are trying to move the student movement, are trying to link it up with the workingclass movement does the primary key upon which we are trying to build our movement. Organizations like the black Panther Party and other revolutionary, International Proletariat organizations in this country. We start off on october 11 in chicago. Last year, confrontation with the big power structure around the war at the time of the democratic convention. Now there are eight revolutionaries on trial for organizing that demonstration. They are trying to repress us, slow us down. We say that his bo we say that is bull. It is time for us to be stronger than we were last summer. October 11, reaching workingclass people to get them to come to chicago and fight in the international struggle, to get them to pull students off the campuses the second and third week of the semester around demands like free all political prisoners, u. S. Occupation troops out of vietnam, black and brown communities, to school. We continue to wage those demands and the tradition of the San Francisco states trouble San Francisco state struggle. Narrator trouble erupted at San Francisco State University after the arrest of one of the black panthers. This film is from cuban television. You see here george mason murray. The trance the translation were is the translation is, people who have been oppressed by imperialism and fascism have a right to get into those institutions that will change the class nature of those instant duchennes and eventually lead to the shutting down of those institutions until we destroy capitalism. We didnt put them up to nothing. Here they are. I ask you to welcome them. Heretofore, women had been thought of as merely being content in a prone position. Things aint want they used to be. Sisters and brothers, people speaking on this stand have not been chosen because of their revolutionary rhetoric. They were chosen because of their correct practice. [indiscernible] huey newton says we must make our concentration upon the enemy. This is correct. Struggling and participating in our political education classes, we are taking more of a leadership role and have sisters that can shoot as well as browders. Shoot as well as brothers. They are not sitting at home with babies. They are out there. They got the babies without us. With them. [applause] they are out there in the community doing fieldwork, and even going down to the sexual level, whether the women are supposed to do so for the cause of the revolution, et cetera. And sisters of the movement on the united front against fascism, i hope they follow the example of the vietnamese women. [applause] all power to the people. Power to the people. Right on. Narrator revolutionaries cry, all power to the people. The people want, the people will take, but the people they refer to are themselves, the conspiracy, the revolutionaries, the tiniest minority in our country. I think sister roberta, another beautiful sister. Sister carol henry. Clearly joined between the pig oppressor and the people. Narrator niekro children participate in a Free Breakfast Program sponsored by the black Panther Party. These are pages from a notorious black panther coloring book ended out to children attending a Free Breakfast Program in San Francisco. This coloring book was dramatically exposed to the u. S. Senates mcclellan investigating committee. The coloring book teaches young knee grows to hate and kill policemen and incites them toward violence and murder. Mao zedong says, fear no [indiscernible] fear no sacrifice. Every difficulty and win. I must remind you, there cannot be a successful struggle against fascism unless broad masses of women are drawn into it. Down with the pig oppressor. Long live the Peoples Liberation struggle. Long live huey newton and Eldridge Cleaver. Theyre too struggle. Dare to struggle, dare to win. More power to the people. Right on. Narrator dictionaries telus communism and fascism have an tell us communism and fascism have an all embracing ideology which has an answer for everything. A correct attitude toward every aspect of human existence. The ideology, the bible of black panthers and most new left revolutionaries, is proscribed in their ever present little red prescribed in their ever present Little Red Book entitled quotations from chairman mao zedong. Chairman mao says a revolutionary should have largest of mind largeness of mind, looking at the revolution as his very life and subordinating his interests to those of the revolution, always and everywhere and wage a tireless struggle against all incorrect ideas and actions. He says to be more concerned about the party and the masses than any individual, be it mother, wife or child. And more concerned about others than himself. Only then can he be considered a true evolutionary a true revolutionary. He has a five week old daughter who has been instilled with revolutionary principles. This was born in her through revolutionary parents, through practice and a revolutionary environment. She was born a revolutionary and will die one, the first of a new generation whose lives will not be conditioned by this power structure. Victory to the people. Victory is ours. All power to the people, and long live the minister of defense. Sister dixon, dr. Of sociology at ucla. The radical Womens Movement was created by an international movement. As a woman fascinated by the German Government as a dangerous revolutionary, rosa luxembourg, said the history of revolutionary struggle is a history of failure. But you only need to win once, and we shall. All power to the people. [applause] i have a telegram i would like to read from the tokyo communist league. Dated july 19, 1969. The communist league sends a solid japanese militant, workers and students. We must together establish our movement. Our struggle could be a violent one to resist establishment power. We proletarians of the brown nations must form a practical link with the third world to eventually win the struggle for world revolution. Our next speaker is the field marshal from the black Panther Party, field marshal don cox. Huey p. Newton says the racist dog police Must Withdraw from the community or face the wrath of the armed people. The black Panther Party has a motto, a quote from german mao zedong of the communist party. We are the advocates of the abolition of war. We do not want war. War can only be abolished through war. In order to get rid of the gun, it is necessary to pick up the gun. Power to the people. We know where political power comes from. Are you going to arrest him . Go ahead, huey, go ahead. Narrator black panthers and other revolutionaries refer to members of the National Lawyers guild as revolutionary lawyers. William kuntsler is from the National Lawyers guild. He was one of the attorneys for the chicago weight, charged with trying to incite riots during the 1968 Democratic National convention. He was also defending the new york 21, a group of black panthers indicted on charges of conspiring to blow up a number of public buildings. Let us now listen to attorney kuntsler as he seems to be inciting the black community toward revolutionary violence. Few will remember, during the new work rebellion during the newark rebellion, some 40 rifles were found missing from the armory. The governor of new jersey, richard hughes, ordered the police to search every home in the central wards of plainfield, the black ghetto of plainfield, to find those missing koran and rifles the missing rifles. I am happy to say that not a single gun was found. [applause] there has not been a white policeman in the central wards of plainfield since july of 1967. Now, the other episode in plainfield, which made it certain that this would be so, occurred some weeks after the theft of the guns. One white policeman by the name of john gleason moved into the central wards of plainfield on a saturday afternoon. He marched down the street leading under a railroad underpass, and then he shot a black man by the name of Bobby Lee Williams through the stomach. Bobby lee williams fell to the ground at this intersection near the railroad underpass. Gleason began to retreat out of the ghetto. He was followed by a crowd of black men and women, and a block and a half past the intersection, he was stoned to death. [applause] [police sirens] in my opinion, he deserved that death. You must stand ready to defend yourselves. And if you are ready, i hope you dont have to, but dont shrink if you have to. It is almost worse to be ready and able to defend yourselves, and to freeze on the trigger when the time comes, because then you will have told the power structure that they need not fear you. The black Panther Party, as you all know, is named the black Panther Party for selfdefense. Power to the people. [applause] we always say, a very old saying, the best defense is a good offense. Thats why we dropped the selfdefense along time ago. There is no need for it in the name of the black Panther Party. Narrator you just heard the black panther minister of education directly contradict attorney kunslers use of the words selfdefense in the name the black panthers give themselves. According to the plainfield, new Jersey Police department, all the statements lawyer kunsler were false. The incidents he detailed happened on a sunday afternoon, not a saturday afternoon as he stated. The rifles referred to by kunsler were not take from an army, nor were they m1 rifles. Armory, nor were they m1 rifles. The rifles were carbines stolen from a manufacturing plant. The governor did not order the police to search for the guns. Contrary to what kunsler would have you believe, some of the guns were found. Routine patrols which include white policeman have continued to operate in all wards of plainfield, the shooting incident notwithstanding. And it occurred during rioting on the same day as the theft of the guns, not weeks later as kunsler said. When kunsler made his statement, there was no legal proof officer gleason shot Bobby Lee Williams. Two of the 12 blacks indicted for the murder of officer gleason were found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment. In an effort to create a stronger bond between students and workers, a panel of rankandfile trade Union Activists were featured on the revolutionary conference program. The next speaker will be an International Harvester worker, member of uaw chicago. [applause] it is our opinion, myself and those of us in the shop, that it is no more possible to bring in a militant rankandfile leadership to one of these unions by peaceful means than it is possible to seize state power by peaceful means. Robert was the director of the black panther caucus uaw fremont, california. He is also active in the black Panther Party. I want to say that the lifeanddeath struggle with reformism has begun. How the struggle will end depends on how the masses break free and put up militant resistance. Fascism will be our punishment tomorrow if we let past the hour of socialism. If we let pass the hour of socialism. Narrator no reform or progress within the american system is sought. The goal is total communism. The next speaker will be arthur bacon from richmond, california. Imperialism is being driven into a corner, it is on the defensive, on the decline, on the way out. We have to understand the proletarian forces like the black Panther Party are taking the lead in forging a united front which will be back fascism and overthrow the imperialist system. Sts undoes the forces proposes a fall action sds proposes a fall action to force the imperialists out. A key component must be working class action against the war. We have to ask archie to get those brothers on the longshore. Have you asked why we have had increasing global narrator have you asked yourself why we have increasing trouble with the armed forces . Listen and you will understand. I am going to run down some stuff tonight about revolts and rebellions going on in the u. S. Army over the last year. The organizing drive that we are undertaking. But before i do that, i got something really important here. Korean people have asked the american servicemens union to send their greetings to revolutionary young people in america. [applause] they sent us a letter, which i am going to read erie dear nd, which i am going to read. Dear andy, chopping the head off u. S. Imperialism. We will combine efforts in chopping the head off u. S. Imperialism and tearing its limbs in concert with revolutionary people the world over. In mutilating u. S. Ruling circles, fully supporting the asu, you will agree with us in this respect i believe. Right on. The democratic peoples republic of korea is the banner of independence of our people lend a powerful weapon of building socialism and communism. The contributions will encourage the Korean People in their struggle to achieve him to achieve a unification of the fatherland, achieving a complete victory of socialism and communism. The asu is playing a leading role in this fight. We have captives of the american servicemens union on 60 large military installations in the United States and 40 overseas. Just as the Bolshevik Party organized through the soviets in 1917 against the czar and the oppression in russia, the american servicemens union is organizing soviets within the u. S. Imperialist army. The only line that is going to lead to victory and revolution is the proletarian line in the army. And they know that whoever can command the allegiance of the rankandfile troops, that command is going to be decisive in revolution or counterrevolution. And right now, the american servicemens union is building an army with an army, workers militia inside the u. S. Army command along with panthers and others where going to make that revolution. [applause] power of the people. We are going to wind this session up with national committees, plural, to combat fascism. Many want to talk about how we can create the new party, the new mass peoples party, however you want to phrase it. Yes, we should create a party. The black Panther Party says yes. You are damn right we need to parallel unAmerican Liberation front in america. We say that needs to be done. We are saying we have some guns to deal with fascism, but lets start with the police. If you dont want to deal with the guns, then start dealing with Community Control of the police, petitions, lets move it, lets defend political prisoners. Power to the people. Narrator on september 5, 19 69, angela davis, after being hired as a full office of hired as a philosophy professor at ucla, first admitted she was a member of the communist party usa. The real reason they are firing me is not only because of my membership in the communist party, but because i have tried to involve myself as much as i could in the black liberation struggle in this country. I worked with sncc, the black panthers and with bsu when i was a student at the University Campus in san diego. We have enough trouble on the campuses. The woman is an admitted member of the comets party. She said in her letter to chancellor young that she felt the only way we could bring about social change necessary todays through violence and militancy. I dont think we need that. Narrator the vice chairman of the black Student Union of ucla admitted, and i quote, many black people look as symbols have been connected to the communist party. The ucla figure most influential in hiring ms. Davis was the chairman of the ucla philosophy department. He has been extremely active in the antivietnam war movement, antipolice activities, and a variety of other causes agitated by communists. The professor has boldly declared, many people i work with regularly belong to the communist party, the progressive labor which is far to the left of the communist party. I am far to the left of the communist party. Narrator what kind of civilization is being offered by communists and other leftists . Would it be better than that which we now have . This is vitally important. Millions of American Youth are being courted and beckoned, agitated and incited to take violent actions against the american system, to throat all overboard. For what . What is the replacement . The best revolutionaries can port to our china or mao zedong, ho chi minh, the cuba of fidel castro, the soviet union of lenin. What have these dictatorships brought . Have they brought democratic freedoms and economic paradise for workers . They have not. Instead, they have established dictatorships over the proletariat, the working people, rather than of the berlin terry rather than the proletariat. New left revolutionaries have accused the people of the United States of being fascists. Fascists subscribe to a highly centralized system of government which exercises absolute control over people, imposing strict censorship and suppressing opposition. Is this a picture of the United States, or red china, north vietnam, cuba and the soviet union and its satellite . Fascists we have to fear our sds, black panthers and all communists who demand a totalitarian system. There is very little difference between communism and fascism. They are both totalitarian systems which share an all embracing ideology which has a suppose that answer to everything, correct attitude toward every aspect of human existence. The people who will be speaking on this panel were chosen because of their correct practice, correct theory and correct practice. The red book is my bible. The gun is my staff. Chairman mao zedong says we can adhere to principles of struggle against all incorrect ideas and actions. And as chairman mao zedong says, the black Panther Party has a motto, a quote from chairman mao zedong of the Chinese Communist party.
