Possible Government Shutdown today. You are a member of the Freedom Caucus. It says you struck a deal with leadership for your vote last night to approve this continuing resolution until february 16th. What was the deal . Basically, we just wanted to take care of the military. That was the strongest piece of it. I, as a veteran, feel like it is wrong for us to not give some certainty to the men and women in uniform. Many of the planes are not flying. We havent had the pay raises that we have been promising. Families are struggling. We are not getting the training we need. Thats a big element. One of the things we want is a vote on how to move forward on the daca question. So those are the things that we said, okay, this is not the way to run the government. We shouldnt be doing month to month funding of things but we are where we are. Lets see if we can work our way out of it. The military is a big piece of what we were working on. What did you get on the military . Just that we are going to have a vote on the bill we all approved about six months ago, the whole funding of the appropriations bill for the military. So we are going to get that vote somewhere around the state of the union message. Also, a vote on what some are saying is a more hard line stance on immigration, including Border Security provisions, a bill that was outlined last week by the judiciary chairman. Whats in that legislation . You are saying it is perceived as hard line. I perceive it the other way. Hard line says that we send everybody back and follow the law exactly as it exists, which thats an opinion out there in the country. The other extreme is the amnesty, citizenship. So the goodlap bill takes the idea that we push forward on my bill, which says there is a middle of the road track that says, i dont think we are going to send them back. I dont think that amnesty is the answer. We will give them continued provisional status, ten years to get your paperwork. If you dont get it, we will roll it into ten and another ten. We will give you almost permanent daca status. We send the wrong message if we are going to give amnesty to people in that category, and then those that are trying to follow the law and come here correctly dont get the message. It is a big problem saying we are going to forgive people that are here illegally while others are trying to do it legally. Watch and be careful what we are stimulating, the arrivals illegally. Then, we need to solve the problem also. So thats basically the core of the goodlap bill. It ends chain migration. It also ends the visa lottery system and has an element of everify that may have been pulled out. Elements of Border Security and i think the nation wants to secure the border. So thats kind of the core principles. As we said, democrats view this as a hard line approach to immigration. Are you concerned at all, though, that putting forth that legislation, having a vote on it in the house is detriment to talks over what to do with the daca participants . No. It is a solution to the daca. Why would it be detrimental . Right now, it is not the hard line at all. The precise line says that you follow the law. The law says you have to go back. We have examples of that occurring. Amnesty is the other extreme. Again, i think that the approach to give kind of permanent status without citizenship, without benefits, thats a fairly big issue, is probably the middle of the road thing. It is not hard line at all. Has your group, the Freedom Caucus, have you heard that President Trump would sign that legislation . I dont think he will lock himself down into anything. The negotiations are too fluid. He says we need to solve the problem. That, i appreciate about him. When he said that president Barack Obamas order was illegal, that he was going to cure it and he said we are going to give a sixmonth delay, because you, congress, should be taking care of this. You should be responsible for what we do. So i dont know if he would commit to anything right now. Lets just see what comes up. Could this legislation pass in the senate . I dont know what could pass in the senate. They are having all sorts of difficulties. All we need to do is push to the senate what we can do in the house. I think that we can pass that legislation in the house. No one thought the senate was going to pass the tax reform bill. They did. Predicting them is very problematic. As we have been talking about this morning, they are at an impasse over funding the government past tonights midnight deadline. What have you been told by leadership about this weekend for the house . Have you been told to stick around in washington . No. I am headed to new mexico today. We are headed up there. We have a full work schedule. We are going to go about our business. After a while, you get used to it. The senate has different processes and procedures. They will work out what they have got to. The idea that the Senate Democrats are placing amnesty against the funding of the government, against the chip funding is something that you really have to just question. Lets hear what our viewers have to say. Well go to jenny in hawaii, a democrat. Caller good morning. I would like to ask mr. Pearce if he is aware that his colleague in wisconsin, ryan, has had the nerve to ask people to reproduce at a higher rate because births are falling off in the United States and specially among them . If he is asking us to reproduce at a higher rate and meanwhile throwing these young people out of america who have been educated and contribute, we observe our military. A lot of nerve. I really hate ryan. I think that is obvious from the question. I dont know exactly what he said about reproduction or not. It is really not the discussion that we are having in congress right now. That would be a separate bill, i suspect. Well go to ralph in charlottesville, virginia, republican. Caller good morning. How are you doing this morning . Good morning, ralph. Good morning. Caller they keep kicking the can down the road. We had laws on the books for immigration and so forth for years and years and years. They have been violated for many, many years. Thats why we have so many Illegal Immigrants here. I have to put it the way it is. I have something for those daca people that are here draw a lin somewhere. Weve got to honor our laws that are on the books to get these people in here legally. There is no problem of giving a timeframe that you have to be here and do certain things to gain your citizenship in the United States. And what is happening now is we are just letting more people come in and letting more people come in and heck with the laws that we had on the books. We have had laws. Those people that are coming in here legally and doing their time to get here legally its just not fair for them. Its not fair for the United States citizens that are here that as were those democrats try to look at the issue. The only issue is the issue of the Illegal Immigrants. And its just a shame that we have that situation whereby the democrats would go far enough to shut down the government and ignore all the rest of the United States citizens that are here and the ones that have come here legally. We will get the congressmans thoughts. I think that a lot of people agree with you the idea that we would shutdown the government over giving amnesty to 800,000 people. I want to solve the problem. The idea of shutting down the government over that question when you are not willing to shut the government down over funding our shoulders. I think ralph is pointing out correctly that a lot of people are angry that were giving special attention to one group when there are so many seniors that are suffering and we have the homeless and we have problems with americans that lived here and pay their taxes here. Lets go to hank in south carolina. Independent. Caller thank you. I live in one of the poorest counties in one of the poorest states in the nation. And all the schools are run by the taxes, local taxes. And every school we have in our county, there are at least two teachers assigned for second language teaching. And that is just taking away from the teaching of our children that we pay taxes for all our lives. And i just dont think that they should have a foot up on the rest of us. I feel sorry for the dacas but we just being overrun and we are having to pay for it. Congressman, do you agree with the last part of it that the country is being overrun by immigrants . We live right on the border. I dont necessarily hear that. I dont think that is the greater concern. The greater concern is that we have limited resources and sometimes special attention is given to people who are living here illegally. Probably most vibrant is young families having kids and the girl next to the bed next to them is maybe here illegally and gets free child birth and they are paying 5,000 and the irritation and anger over those things again just diversion of resources in the classroom is something that is becoming a big issue. So its something that we have to have a discussion about. Again, i think even hank says it feels lets start curing the problems and lets be aware of the resources that illegal immigration is costing us. What federal benefits do Illegal Immigrants not receive . There is a lot of misinformation out there . Im not even sure myself. We try to find out. It looks like they have access to almost everyone of the federal benefits when you can have a child birth thats a very precise activity and thats available. I know that hospitals in the Southern District of new mexico if someone comes to the border with a medical emergency that hospital has to pick them up and at their expense take care of it. They have told me they had to carry people to denver to have heart surgery and pick them up and keep them until they are fully rehabilitated and take back to the border. We realize that there are expenses associated with it and people, the frustration is drawing like you have heard in a couple of the callers here. Well go to eric in georgetown, kentucky. Democrat. Caller republicans in 2012 after trying to dodge the issue land orImmigration Reform because only republicans can do it and do it right. After the election you couldnt be a republican and mention immigration without getting shut down by the party. I wouldnt find that true at all. I talked about Immigration Reform since i got here. By contrast only been one party in the last 10 or 15 years that had a filibuster proof majority in the senate. One vote can require the 60 vote threshold. Even with president obama, nancy pelosi and harry reid they did not pass any Immigration Reform and didnt do anything with daca. That tells you that they understood the voters in america are really flinching back from this issue. So yes when we have the majority they are willing to block everything and say they support amnesty but when they had filibuster proof senate they did nothing. The president has been saying he would like a wall and other Border Security provisions in exchange for allowing the undocumented youth to remain in the country, remove that threat of deportation. What is your position on the wall given that you are on the border . I point out to the administration that the wall doesnt work. I have a section of the wall this big in my office because somebody on the other side cutting it down and selling them from scrap iron in offduty hours. It is good scrap iron. In the remote places we will need something different. You talk about securing the border. The idea to build this physical structure and secure the border is one that will leave a lot of people disappointed. They are coming over it and under it. The best tunnelers in the world work for the cartels. They are using ultralights to come across. They will remote activate and drop package of drugs. They have gps locater. Takes three minutes to defeat the wall with drugs. Thats a daily occurrence. Lets be honest with the american people. The physical wall will not work everywhere. Where it is that is fine. It seems to work in the big cities. The bigger issue lets secure the border. I think that is what the president is talking about. I think in his way of saying it the wall means secure the border. I dont know exactly, but i think so. Lets go to republican in florida. Caller hello. What is your question or comment here for the congressman . Caller we are a military family. We find it a disgrace. I watched fox news last night and your channel. For Lindsey Graham and rand paul and all them to act like they care for this military when they just go on the tv and run their mouths and i find it a disgrace and they are putting immigration over our military. Can our military just lay down their guns and say we are not going to fight . The military and the Government Shutdown continues to operate. It continues to operate but it operates on the short term funding. Dana is exactly right that we are not getting the training that we need. We dont have the force structure that we need. The equipment does not have replacement parts. Many planes are not flying and our point is made well and that is what we in the Freedom Caucus were insisting that we have that vote last night that we vote yes for the funding but military would be funded for the rest of the year. We did not get that concession but we got the concession that we would have that vote somewhere around the state of the union. That is okay but we cannot keep dealing with the government in this fashion 30 days to 30 days. It is very difficult for businesses that are trying to do business with the government. Cant make an investment for some big project because you get 30 days and it may run out. We have passed appropriation bills to the senate. We have done our work. The Senate Democrats have blocked that and i think as a house member and im aware of all pluses and minuses in the senate it is time for them to say we must do the business and if we need to go back to the way we used to handle the filibuster then we go back to the way we did it traditionally. Right now you dont have to be present on the floor. You can be downtown having dinner. Lets get back to the business of the people. We just need results right now. 60 votes needed in the senate to pass a continuing resolution to keep the government funding. The senate at an impasse this morning as the two leaders came to the floor and we showed you tensions rise. Many senators on the floor for tense back and forth between the two leaders as they couldinate come to an agreement. Well see what happens. Tune into cspan 2. A poll released yesterday found americans are splitting the blame between both parties in congress and the president. When you lump trump in with republicans in congress a majority, 53 blame members of the Republican Party if the government shuts down. You are running for governor of your state. Are you concerned this could impact you negatively . I dont think about things like that. We are in a very difficult situation here. I dont think about who will get blamed or not getting blamed. We are required to have outcomes and results. It requires very difficult decisions. I think we should do it. I never sit and say this is going to hurt this race or that race. Those races will take care of themselves. Today we have a responsibility. If the Senate Democrats decide to shut the government down and we get blamed that is just the way it is. But the im really not even too interested in assessing blame. The system is not working and i believe that the senate needs to start making the system work. For one person to be able to drive to a 60vote threshold has been a problem. It was not traditionally that way. It changed the rules 30 or 40 years ago. It is maybe time to go back where you can hold the floor as long as you can speak. Live every day at 7 00 a. M. Eastern and online at c span. Org. We take you live in the mall from washington to hear the march for life marking anniversary of the Supreme Court roe v wade decision. My name is genie man secini. I am honored to be the president of the march
