Wasnt seeing things, seeing spots as it were and notice d te edge indicated thoerp kodakole lor, which to me, would be color film and you would see image of color in the frame, but they werent and they looked further the dates indicated they early 30s, late 20s and did research and discovered kodacolor film was an early precursor to kodachrome. Only exist ed from 28 to 35 ad the design of these films, the mechanics of the film, the lines i was looking at were little tiny microscopic lenses that would trap the color when filmed through a camera with a filter developed and then reprojected through that same filter on a projector. And thats where the color was seen. But from the naked eye, it look ed like a black and white film with odd little stripes how hard was it to get them projected in color . Did you have that technology lying around . No, we dont. Several years ago, i found or seen on an exhibit in oklahoma in a museum, a kodacolor protect er. But never gave it a Second Thought because i hasnt seen the films yet. But with whoever owned the camera, im sure they wouldnt let us run our film through the proctor and as the age of these films, id be headed in to run the films through any projector, much less our own. So i did Additional Research and discovered theres a lab in rockville, maryland, that can can digitally recapture and recode the color information thats trapped in these lens lines. And make it color again. These, these kodacolor films, theyre just part of a big set of home movies at the library museum, correct . Right. Weve got probably 150 or so. Of hoover home movies dating from 1924 to about 1948, 50, 52, somewhere in there. These films were they shot mostly by the first lady . Some were shot by the first laid can di. Others, were quite sure. I suspect they were taken by their daughterinlaw. Herbert hoover jr. s wife, Margaret Watson because theyre family films of their children, peggy ann and the third dubbed pete. You can see him in some of the films playing with their pet, polly. Named ruby. Another one peggy anns rolling around with a little play stroller. And playing with pete with a bucket. Looks she put a bucket of water on his head. Not very nice of sister, but sibling rivalry starts early, i guess. These really do have the feel of a home movie. Whats more when you look at them, from our perspective, from 2017, they feel very new. Its almost like looking at the white house current day. Scenes of the south lawn, et cetera. Right. You see the hoover and his cabinet members and some friends playing what would eventually become hoover ball. Theyre kind of tossing around a medicine ball on the lawn. You can see the Eisenhower Executive Office building before it was nameded eisenhower in the background. The rose garden, theres a scene where you see alonso field, one of the butlers of the white house posing with the flowers and mrs. Hoover playing catch with their two dogs. And then the dogs run through the, a lit reflect iing pool, jt having a good time. We noted that in that hoover ball scene that the president is playing in a natty looking sweater running around. Also in the scene where theyre fishing, the man on the fishing boat, fishing in a suit. At this time, mr. Hoover always believed a gentlemen should be properly dressed at all times. You wouldnt see him, occasionally, casual films of him fishing. He would lose the tie. Sometimes, he wouldnt have the hat either, but he trade that had for hip waiters and a fishing vest. Where do you think that was shot . The film of him fish iing of the boat is off the coast of florida and taken in january or early february of 1929. They visited their family friends, jeremiah and catherine milba milbank, a Business Bank in new york and they met sometime in the 20s and their friendship extended for an additional four decades. You mentioned the president s grandson, pete hoover. Hes the one i understand that donated these films. Is he still alive . No, mr. Hoover, pete hoover passed away in 2010. These seven films in k or kodacolor, this would have been new technology tat time, so lou hoover must have been on top of the latest technology. Aside from being just interested in getting home movies, she must have known about this from early on. I think so. 1924 is when her shift from still photos to home movies came in. And that was about time movie cameras were being made available to public just to buy and make your own backyard fun movies or whatever youre doing. So she jumped on that technology and i think as a trained geologist and as a scientist of stanford university, i think it was kind of the natural whats next, whats next, whats next. Many people associate logical progression. Many people associate the Hoover Administration with the onset of the depression. What do you think these films and the larger collection in the library museum, these home movie, revooel about president hoover and his family . I think it shows a lighter side of hoover. So often, he was looked at as stiff, uncaring. You can see him interacting, not necessarily in these seven film, but other of the films that we have, interagenting with his grandchildren, playing with the family pets. Just having fun. Just like any other father would really to his grandchildren that were 5 a, 6, 3, 4, 5, 6 years old at the time. It it sort of unmasked him as this stiff, uncaring individual. He love d his family and grandchildren and who doesnt love their own family and children grandchildren . Will visitors be able to see these new home movies . Yes. With we have of the kodacolor film with all seven on our Youtube Channel in a play list then you can watch them anytime. Weve got a little computer i think its an ipad or some little device in our museum that you push a button and you can watch the films in our museum.
