Todays physicists are on an epic adventure to combine Isaac Newtons laws of Gravity Emotion with the more recent discoveries of quantum mechanics and Albert Einsteins relativity, which as of yet have proven to be incompatible. Succeeding in this endeavor with ultimately tie all of the forces in the universe together into one beautiful equation without a lock the deepest mysteries of space and time. That Fastening Journey is the fascinating story of this book. Professor is a professor of theoretical physics at the City College of New York he is the cofounder of String Field Theory and continues Einstein Search for theory of everything. One that unites the four fundamental forces of the universe under a single theory. He is the Science Correspondent for cbs this morning, host of the popular Radio Program Science fantastic an exploration and the host of many, many terrific educational tv shows on bbc and the Discovery Channel Welcome to todays program. After such a great introduction. I cannot wait to hear the speaker myself. I am a Research Physicist but it also work with Bbc Television and the Discovery Channel Part i get to interview some of the greatest minds of science and philosophy. Every time i interviewed these people i asked them the key question the question of all questions. The question that has haunted philosophers and scientists for generations and that question is, is there intelligent life on the earth . I was watching the kardashians on tv last night is no intelligent life on this planets. There is one question of all questions that has haunted the greatest minds for the past 2000 years. Is there a unifying principle a paradigm, and allconsuming theory a God Equation that would explain the richness the variety, the splendor of our universe. That is a story of my book. The 2000 chase find a theory of everything. In the equation perhaps no more than 1 inch long diluted Fiber Einstein for the last 30 years of his life. Well, lets talk about the God Equation. Because it has consumed the finest minds of the human race, hundred of physicists are working with adam smashers , working with the detectors in outer space to try and unravel the secret of the universe itself. In other words the God Equation. Who knows maybe no more than 1 inch long that will allow us to quote read the mind of god. Well, i first heard about this theory when i was eight years old. When i was eight years old something happened which changed my life completely. Everyone is talk of the fact great scientist just died. But on the Evening News all they published was a picture of his desk. And on the desk was an unfinished book. Captions of the greatest scientists of our time could not finish this book. I was mesmerized. I said to myself wow what could be so hard they could not finish it . Couldnt he ask his mother . Everything is a homework problem. Why couldnt he finish it . I was consumed trying to find out who was this man. What was so hard that he could not finish it . I found out that his name was Albert Einstein. When he could not finish was a theory of everything to read the mind of god. Well, i decided when i was around 17 to be part of this great revolution. So i asked my mom one day, mom can i permission to build an Atom Smasher in the garage . At 2. 3 million electronic Barnacle Accelerator . And my Mom Kind of stared at me. And she said sure, why not. Dont forget to take out the garbage. With some of forno pounds of transom 22 miles of Copper Wire and a beta John Particle accelerator in the garage. And i blew out all the circuit breakers in the house. My poor mom she mustve said to herself why couldnt i have a son who plays baseball . Why cant he play basketball . And for God Sake why can he find a nice japanese girlfriend . Why does he build these machines . Well i was not the only one mesmerized by the search for a theory of Everything Pc for 2000 years the greatest minds in history shown here, thought adams was the basis of reality. Aristotle thought four Elements Minute the entire universe but it was pythagoras who had the most ingenious idea. He said it is music. Only music is rich enough to explain all of the Richness And Variety of the universe. So one day, he was with a liars string. The longer the string the lower the note pretty went by a Blacksmith Shop and he saw a sword being hammered. The longer the sword the lower the note. And he said aha, mathematics explained music. The Mathematics Residence each note gives you a vibration that can be measured in the laboratory. This was a break theyre pretty even founded a school, a school to discover music and the laws of melodies. The laws of harmony. Unfortunately the roman empire fell apart. And for a thousand years for a thousand years there was darkness. Superstition, magic and inquisitions. And then in the year 1666 the great plague that hit london. One quarter of the population of london perished in this huge epidemic. One man is 23 years old. He was sent home because Cambridge University was locked down. And he noticed an Apple Fall on his estate. And then he saw the moon. Then he asked a question for the ages. If an Apple Falls does the moon also fall . Will he realize that yes the moon celestial bodies comments they are following for they are following and free space. But the mathematics was too great for his time. So what he do . He discovered calculus to solve the following apple in the following moon problem. His name was Isaac Newton and he created the first theory of almost everything. And equation that summarized the laws of motion. This set into motion the industrial revolution. Steam engines, buildings, tension on gluten laws of motion. Whenever a force is unraveled it changes human history. Think about that. The four forces that govern the universe each time a force was unraveled that change human history with newtons laws unleashing the industrial revolution. Amazing. And then a few hundred years later Faraday And Maxwell worked out electricity and magnetism. And it shown if you bury a magnetic field to get an electric field. If you vary in electric field you get a magnetic field. That gave us and dynamos. While generators, light bulbs, the electric revolution took place because once again a unifying theme emerged. Electricity and magnetism are two sides of the same coin the same Light Newton unified heavenly physics with earthlike physics, Faraday And Maxwell unified electricity with magnetism. And then maxwell made the observation for the ages. If an electric field can create a magnetic field. In the magnetic field can create an electric field can they vibrate . Can they vibrate together to create a moving wave . Tsubaki then calculate the speed of this wave and he was shocked. Shocked out of his mind. The speed of this wave was a speed of light. And then he said, this is light. That is what light is. The unification of electric and magnetic fields each one turning into the other. And so the universe was a simpler than we thought. Radio, television, microwaves, all of that summarized by the word of Michael Faraday and james maxwell. Unifying electricity and magnetism. And then along comes einstein who says equals mc squared. And as the mass of hydrogen in the sun. E is the energy of sunlight. In other words equals mc squared unified Matter And Energy giving us his stars. The secret of the sun lies in the unification of matter with energy. So once again it is unification that is the fundamental theme of the universe. What was being unified . Before World War ii new philosophy began to emerge. First of all all of biology can be expressed in terms of chemistry. All of chemistry can be expressed in physics. All of physics in turn can be expressed in terms of two theories. Relativity that theory of the big bang in the theory of the small. Which is lasers and transistors, computers, the internet. This conversation is made possible by the Quantum Theory. The problem is these two theories do not like each other. Why should god have a left hand and a right hand the dont talk to each other . Note not possible. Theres got to be unification of the left hand and the right hand. Then we had World War ii and the power of the theory. Once again when unification of a principle of force that was unraveled, it change human history. First we had the industrial revolution paid them had the electric revolution. That we had the nuclear revolution. What did we find . Chaos. A zoo of subatomic particles emerged. This was not supposed to happen. Oppenheimer of the atomic ball said in frustration, quote the nobel prize in physics you go to the physicist who does not discover a new particle this year. Physics was in turmoil. Why should the Quantum Theory of particles be so messy . Things are supposed to be simpler. That was the lesson without we learned. No nature had other plans for us. So we built bigger adams smashers. Much bigger than the one i built when i was in high school. Big gigantic this is what they found. It is an ugly theory it works. Its called the standard model. The theory only a mother could love corks and antiquark three identical generations of redundant particles, 20 parameters you can adjust anyway you want. Look at this thing. Why should god so fundamentally chaotic and random at the fundamental level. There has got to be a higher theory. So this is the low Energy Theory. Is the high Energy Theory . Two weeks ago you probably sound the New York times, a crack was found in the standard model. But a higher energy it must fail white with the B Cell Universe of the Lefthand And Righthand they dont talk to each other mess. That is why theyre saying theres got to be a principal. A paradigm, there is got to be a paradigm that somehow unifies all of this zoo of subatomic particles. And we think it could be music. The music of subatomic particles. You see by demonstrating each no Score Response to a vibration. If i had a microscope that could look into an electronic i would not be a. We think. I would see a Rubber Band. And when you twang the Rubber Band it changes frequency. You have to give it a different name. You twang it again, it changes frequency and you have to give it another name. You twang it enough times and this Rubber Band gives you all the subatomic particles in nature. This is called String Theory. So in other words, why do we have so many particles . They are nothing but notes. Notes on the vibrating string like a bflat sharp. What is physics . It is the harmonies of the strings. What is chemistry . Chemistry is the melodies you complain when the strings bump into each other. What is the universe . The universe is a symphony of strings. And then what is the mind of god . Einstein spent 30 years of his life chasing after. The mind of god would be cosmic music resonating through hyperspace. That we think could be the mind of god. In fact, you can summarize all of String Theory into one equation, that is my equation. My equation is about an Inch And Half long. Its not the final equation however because more recently we discovered there are membranes like beach balls or volleyballs. Membranes it can also vibrate. In fact we think our universe is a membrane. Therefore this is not the final equation. This is not yet the God Equation. But maybe somebody out there listening to this program, a young person who was energized by this talk. Maybe you will find the true God Equation. And when you do let me give you some advice. First, tell me first. And we will publish together and we will split the nobel prize money. Now the next question is, how can you test a theory like this . There are five ways you can test this theory. Like what happened two weeks ago outside of chicago. A crack in the standard Model Babe that crack can be filled with the particle predicted by stripping theory. The next octave up. Where the Loss Octave of vibrating strings but they are higher octaves. And dark matter dark matter is invisible but it is predicted by String Theory. The instant of creation itself can be photographed using gravity detectors new accelerators by the japanese the chinese and the europeans and maybe there are deviations and newtons laws of gravity. Lets take a few of these ways to test the theory. Every textbook every high School Textbook usually says the universe is made mainly of adams. Wrong. That is not true anymore. Most of the universe is made out of dark matter which is invisible. And predicted by String Theory. String theory says there are higher octaves vibrating strings for the next octave up would have invisible matter. And so this could be the origin of dark matter. No dark matter is invisible so how do we know today are . Well how do we know that your glasses are there . Light bends when it goes theory classes thats all we know there is glass there. And the same thing with dark matter. Light bends goes to dark matter for that is how we note dark Matter League is there. And it could be nothing but a higher vibration of the string. And the question children ask maybe the String Erie can answer them. Children ask the question mommy, daddy, if the universe is expanding what is it expanding into . Children asked the question if you fall into a black hole, where you go . Or, is time travel possible . Can you go backwards in time . Or are there gateways, wormholes through other universes . What lies be on the black hole zero white hole on the other side the black hole . Are there other dimensions are there other universes . These questions to be answered within the current framework. You need a higher theory. That is where String Theory comes in lets try to test this theory. The European Space agency and nasa are proposing to get baby pictures of the instant of creation. This is lisa, Laser Space Antenna a Gravity Wave Detector in outer space proposed by the europeans and the americans. It will give us a baby pictures of the Infant Universe H freund of a second after its birth. And only analyze these baby pictures we will see the universe the Infant Universe emerging from the womb. And maybe, just maybe we will find evidence of an umbilical cord. An umbilical cord connecting our Infant Universe to a Parent Universe in a parallel universe. And what is on the other side of the blackhole if you fall and you just die . What happens when you go through a black hole . Is there a white hole on the other end of the blackhole . 1935 Albert Einstein and his student devises it connects to universes together with a bridge the Einstein Rosen Bridge connecting our universe to another universe. And perhaps another universe is in a different time period in which case this would become a time machine. So think about it, physicists are now meeting the world of science fiction. Now you have seen this before. Where have you seen this before in a Childrens Book . Well, years ago there was an Oxford Mathematician by the name of Charles Dodson. He knew about wormholes, mathematicians call them connected spaces they dont not call them wormholes the press calls and wormholes. However Charles Dodson decides to write a book about them and he could not use his name of course but he was a distinguished professor of math. He wrote under a pseudonym, lewis carroll. And he called it through the looking glass. The looking glass is the wormhole a gateway between our universe and a parallel universe. Next question im sure youre going to ask me is, if there is a gateway, a wormhole between us and a parallel universe then is Elvis Pressley still live in a parallel universe . The answer is probably yes. Corn to the Quantum Theory talk about a multi verse of universes now. It was einstein who said that her universe is a bubble of some sort. Bloom on the skin of the bubble the bubble is expanding, that is called the big bang theory. The String Theory says there could be other universes out there. When universes collide that is called the big bang. So the big bang could be a collision of the multi verse. A multi verse of universes. Now i find this aesthetically pleasing because you see my parents my parents were buddhist. And in buddhism there is no beginning or end. There is just nerve and a. But i was raised as a presbyterian. On the presbyterian religion there is an instant when god said let there be light, there was a genesis. So either the universe had a beginning or didnt. They are no two ways around it until now. Now we can nail these two ideas together. You see our universe had a beginning. Our universe had a big bang. Our universe had a genesis. Were they floating in . Nirvana higher dimension. Nerve anna is the true arena of all of these universes. Think of space being threedimensional x, y, z. Three dimensions. But why three . There is nothing special about three pretty talk to mathematician and they will say three is actually quite ordinary rather boring dimension. Other dimensions are much more interesting. Maybe, just maybe we can have people living in these other dimensions. This was Edwin Abbott a novelist who wrote about flatland a world on a tabletop. Two dimensional people on a tabletop. When i was a child i used to go to the japanese Tea Garden in San Francisco for it ocd fish swimming into dimensions but up and down were forbidden the universe was flat. The universe was two dimensional. There is no third dimension. Any fish, talk about a third dimension would be laughed at and considered a crackpot, and mystic, and idiot there is no third dimension. While today many physicists believe we cannot yet prove that we are the fish. We spent all of our time in three dimensions not realizing there could be four, five, six, up to 11 dimensions. This is a hypercube a four dimensional cube. Artists and physicists have been fascinated by these higher dimensional objects. Crucify in the fourth dimension and you saw the movie interstellar Strike Matthew Mcconaughey at the end of the movie were to see end up on . Hyperspace based on String Theory String Theory predicts other dimensions. That is where Matthew Mcconaughey is floating in the final scenes of the movie. And of Course Salvador Dali immortalized the image of melted clocks, why melted clocks . Because he is trying to visualize time. Time as the fourth dimension. And of course time could be a fourth dimension. But believe it or not Einsteins Equations do allow for time travel. He himself realized that. Newton of course thought time was like an arrow. Once you fire the arrow, the arrow never deviated forward, backward are two distinct realms of time. Einstein comes along and says not so fast. Not so fast. Time is a river. A river that can speed up time is a river the new wrinkle on all of this the river of time has whirlpools. The river of time and Fork Fork into two rivers giving us the possibility of the great physicist looked into this question that wormholes through space are allowed under Einsteins Equations. He had doubts about going through time. But space, yes. He believed wormholes could in fact go through the fabric of space. So the question is, is time travel possible . There is a wrinkle in all of this. The equations say perhaps but to do it you do not need a delorean that simply not possible. You need a blackhole. The energy of a black hole. That is what it takes to rip the fabric of space and time. To turn time into a pretzel it takes energy beyond comprehension. So, sorry about that. Now there is another problem with Einstein Siri. If the einsteins said the universe must eventually die. This is the second law of thermodynamics. In a closed system things rust, fall apart, rock, dk, and died. That is why we die. We die because Air Isnt built up the second law says Airs Entropy builds up in ourselves, our cells begin sluggish and eventually go in and eventually they die. That is why we die. But if you take a look at evolution, evolution seems to go the opposite direction. Higher forms of emerging. What does wrong with the second log dynamics . Why do we resist it all . You see they said in a closed System Entropy always increases, chaos increases, eventually you die. What happens is you have an open system like sunlight coming in from the stars. Thats what drives evolution of the earth. If the laws of physics says the universe itself must eventually die, then the question is, is it possible in an open system to reverse the death of the universe . The answer is possibly yes. Trillions of year from now we are very advanced and we havent blown ourselves apart, the universe will approach near absolute zero. Its very cold, intelligent life will be impossible. All life as we know it is only one way to evade the second law of thermodynamics. In other words a Wormhole Wormhole to another universe we got there were molten of the universe the sky there could be you younger and warmer than our universe is on the verge of death be able to escape on a virtual lifeboat to another Universe And Mess up that universe as well love to universe to mess up perhaps there is an application to this theory. The application to this theory is that it will allow us to survive even the universe itself dies. Well, now would like to end on is my favorite Einstein Story. And then if we have time i will take a few questions. My favorite Einstein Story is this. When einstein was an old man he was tired of giving the same talk over and over again. So one day his chauffeur came up to him the chauffeur said professor, i am really a parttime actor. I have heard your speech so many times i have memorized it. So why dont we switch places . I will put on a mustache i will put on a wig i will be the great einstein and you can take a rest and be my chauffeur. Well einstein love the joke so they switched places. This went along famously until one day a mathematician in the back asked a very difficult question. And einstein thought the game is up. Within the chauffeur said that question is so elementary that even my chauffeur over here can answer it for you. Well thank you very much. Back doctor Michio Kaku thank you so much it was a fascinating presentation thank you. Thank you. We do have several questions we appreciate your time on this. First when i got here, for those viewers who have not yet read the God Equation one thing this book does a terrific job is introducing the reader to giants in the field of Astronomy And Physics and how Ones Achievement paved the way for the next. I found it fascinating that im more than one occasion the same year that one scientist died to take up his reins was born. Its almost as if the universal once and is willing on this journey of knowledge to persist. The difficulty to eloquently summarize the tales of these geniuses . Well it is rather astonishing coincidence. I was quite shocked when i saw this reading the history that the year galileo died he died under disgrace she was going blind sprayed the year galileo died a young baby was born on another part of europe. That young baby completed conjectures and mathematics. That baby was Isaac Newton who was born the same year that he died. Then the torch was carried on by maxwell. Maxwell worked up the theory of light. That electromagnetism is the source. In fact that is what is light. Turns out he died young. But the year that maxwell died, a baby was born which carried on his work. That baby was Albert Einstein. And so it is a cosmic coincidence that the torch, the torch was carried on by somebody who was born the very year the predecessor died. Now course were talking about the whole shooting match. That is the God Equation. An equation perhaps no more 1 inch long third allow us to summarize everything known about the universe. On one sheet of paper, on one sheet of paper you could write the theory of almost everything. He could put down Einsteins Equation is quite ugly clumsy but it works. It is about a foot long. Maybe mark 8yard long if you were to ride it out. But on one sheet of paper you could put the theory of almost everything. Now, we want that 1 Inch Equation which wont merge these two hostile theories. Realize relatively is based on smooth surfaces. Trampling nets, spheres, smooth surfaces. While the Quantum Theory chops up everything, chops up everything into tiny particles. How can the theory of particles be equivalent to a theory of smooth surfaces . In Fact Einstein had an analogy. He wrote about marble that gravity is based on smooth marble services. But the Quantum Theory is wood, it is a gnarled, it has no rhyme or reason. It is who would set einstein. Well, we think both of these could be combined in terms of the language of music. The music of gravity. The music of subatomic particles is the lowest octave of the string. And einstein had never been born this is quite astonishing. If einstein had never been born we would have discovered all of Einstein Siri anyway as the lowest vibration of a vibrating string. Find that truly remarkable. You can throw the standard model and with it to predicting we know about the universe can be summarized at the lowest octave of vibrating string. That is incredible. That is incredible. Next question is a fan this is from philip he is referring to the double Sled Experience to determine if light as a wave or particle. Philip says as i understand it light is a wave until it is observed. Its what turns energy into matter and if so it seems goddess of universal consciousness that turns energy into what we know as the universe which also fits with what the mystics described as the sense of oneness or cosmic consciousness. So i am left with this question. Did science uncover the existence of god with the double slit experiment . Be to their two major ways of understanding the double experiment. By rights and electron should go through one hole at a time. By having a sheet of Paper And Shooting electrons through tools what happens on the other Side Question of what happens on the other side to get an interference pattern. As of two waves interfere with each other. Now that blows your mind. That means the electron went through both hull simultaneously. How can that be. [laughter] how can one electron go through two hull at the same time . That is just the way it is, get used to it. There are two philosophies you can take. Neither of them with common sense. Both of them will blow your mind away. The first interpretation comes from eugene to help build the atomic bomb. One of the founders of the Quantum Theory. He said that well someone has to look at it as you correctly pointed out. Someone who is conscious has to look at the electron to say aha the electron went to the left where it went to the rights. But who looks at the observer . Somebody has to observe the observers that the observer can exist because the observer is also made out of adams. How do we know the observer of the observer of the observer can exist . Somebody has to look at him too. You have an infinite sequence of observers that make it possible to make a measurement. In other words this is called the nurse friend. He has to have a friend in order to make a measurement. So how many friends are there . An infinite number leading up to god. In fact big nerve wrote about mysticism one of the founders of the Quantum Theory wrote about mysticism when he talked about observers making observers making observers all the way up to god. That is a parallel universes. We are constantly splitting apart universes after universes being split apart theres even a Tv Series based on this. The man a high castle is on tv. Roosevelt was assassinated in one universe so we lost World War ii. The germans on one and cut up the United States because they won World War ii and because Assassins Bullet killed roosevelt. But you see a bullet is a Quantum Events. A bullet, the flaring of gunpowder depends on adams. Adams that could cause a misfire is sometimes guns misfire. So it other words in one universe died in the other universe misfired roosevelt went on to lead us in World War ii the nasis were defeated there split by one bullet which is a Quantum Event based on history what is a way around this . Physicists go crazy thinking about this. The great physicist, said that we still do not really understand it. We have two ways of looking at the Quantum Theory. Either there is a cosmic observer, i. E. God, or this infinite number of parallel universes take your pick. [laughter] in other words get used to it. The theory works. But the philosophy behind to alternate points of view your head explodes thinking about it. That is amazing. So, can you explain to us why it is so difficult to conceive of the seven dimensions beyond the four that we are accustomed to . Are the three dimensions plus time. Is there a way it can somewhat sort of describe to a layman like myself . Select the simple answer is no. We live in a three dimensional World Part we can move in length, width, height. We can conceive of animals charging addison three dimensions. That is why we understand three dimensional tigers threedimensional liens. Did not give us the ability to visualize a five dimensional tiger because they do not harm us therefore there is no necessity for us to visualize five dimensional tigers. But your pc, your computer easily computes and hyperspace no problem at all. Its nothing but a mathematical trick. So how do we physicist visualize these things . We take crosssections. Other words we cannot visualize a five dimensional being or five dimensional object. They did not give us a brain big have to do that. What do we do . We slice it up. Slices we understand. Even though the four dimensional, five dimensional, six dimensional weight itself is not visualize of apart when we do . We use mathematics. In order to understand these objects but we can visually tired dimensional objects, no. Sorry about that. But in the movie interstellar hollywood tried and had Matthew Mcconaughey floating in a five dimensional cube at the end of the ovi. Is that like a sort of like a shadow of a shape in another dimension . Is that how it would be . But said take a box and unravel the box. When i get . A Cross Breed across consisting squares, six squares arranged like a cross and that is the unraveling of a cube. Now i unravel the hypercube and you saw the picture it was Salvador Dali who popularized the tesseract. In fact in the novel and the movie a wrinkle in time which is in Turn Nothing but and unraveled four dimensional hypercube. Got you. Thank you. Some people subscribe to every answer found brings another question or the further we go the less we know. If you consider this i would strings be the smallest things the ultimate substance that make up everything . Could there not be even smaller things and this goes on and on indefinitely . One way is that there is a final theory. Given you have one sheet of paper you can write the complete theory of almost everything. The standard model with Einstein Siri. One method one school of thought says it does and this is the final theory. You cannot deny the possibility that it goes on forever. This is called the onion theory. We physicists do not like to postulate a new layer of the onion unless we have to. And so it isnt onion possible as the way in which look at the universe . The answer is yes. So far we see no necessity to go beyond Punk Energy prints the energy of the big bang. Its the energy of the string. This tension the 19 billion volts that is Quad Drilling in times more powerful than the large glider which is our most powerful machine. So String Theory lives at the energy so there is no necessity to go further. But could it go farther . Possibly. But i bet it stops. I met a stops of the String Basement i cannot imagine the calculations that go beyond that, just seems incredible. One more question from you and then a favor going to ask. Quantum entanglement can you explain it and tells her thoughts on it .
