Representative rick larsen, a democrat from washington recently joined book tv to discuss the books he is reading. Congressman rick larson of washington, what is on your reading list . My reading list is or has been long but its coming into this middle of the summer announcement working on rack, the third iq novel by joe e day, los angeles mystery writer. Iq is his character and racked is the third book in his series. Its a detective, detective novel and hes a private investigator and a lot of action and a lot of great relationships in that book and so im working on that. Im also working on Frederick Douglass biography published recently and im working on that. Its a fairly book and so im popping him popping in and out of that book quite a bit and taking that in chunks. The policy in me, david dollar one of the think tanks in washington dc as a lead editor of a book called china 2049 where hes brought together some reform minded chinese scholars to look at what the chinese economy might look like and what its challenges are between now and 2049. Obviously, indications for u. S. Chinese policy so its an interesting workrelated book that i read for work. I dont read a lot of books for work but i usually read for entertainment and i try to throw in a couple books about Washington State, my home state as well. On my shelf is a book by lafe whitaker who is jim whitaker son, the First American to climb Mount Everest and it is a memoir about lafe whitaker growing up with a very famous father who was of purse american to climb Mount Everest. Thats my reading list for the rest of the summer. The china 2049 book is your district in washington is pretty effective on trade with china, isnt it . Washington state is the most trade dependent state in the country about 40 of the jobs in our state are directly tied to trade with country all over the world but china is one of the largest trading partners for Washington State companies and the women and men who work at those companies. Having a fairly, you know, good idea, fairly good look into the crystal ball on the future of the chinese economy as a direct impact on Washington State and the Washington State economy and the women of men who work in those jobs. To find yourself in Congress Sharing book ideas with your colleagues . Not with all my colleagues but a few of them in pretty avid mystery reader and there is one member particular that we trade book ideas usually around which mystery we are reading lately in which mystery series we are reading lately. That is kind of where i take my interest in sharing them with my colleagues. You get to spend those long flights from seattle to dc in a book . People ask when to find time to read and im like its five hours on average one way across the country and theres probably a time to read. I can only watch so much or so many, you know, recently released movies and so much for so many Netflix Series or other streaming services. A good book and a good book on paper, not electronic version, a good book on paper, hardback or paperback but it is still the way to go for me. Tell us about the Second District of washington . Other than it being the best district in the country and hugs the puget sound that got the San Juan Islands in the north west corner of the district. The city of everett which is in the south end and the district has beautiful views of the Olympic Mountains to the west and cascades to the east. It really is from a scenery perspective a beautiful district. It is also the district i was born and raised in. My family has been the reason for five generations now so its a real great honor as well to be able to continue to represent it.
