Debate differently and and how senator harris is prepared for tonight. A series of virtual conversations intended to bring those people together to continue to power through and how women live work and lead from washington to Corporate America in their own communities and households. The second turntable is maya harris, scarce in one of her closest advisers Christine Pelosi and Jennifer Palmieri witowski medications schieffer president obama a top adviser to Hillary Clinton in 2016. You can follow the conversation twitter user the and i will try to get to a few audience questions before we end this roundtable. Now before we get started we have a special video we are going to show a short video with elizabeth hull writes a world podcast as part of her video podcasts and women in debating and then come back on the other side. Thereve been so many unprecedented curveballs in the selection he can be hard to keep up but one thing remains constant. You know why, people dont like her. Nobody likes her. I did not mention his name. Well im here, hes not. Senator Kamala Harris is up against the longstanding texas girded that women in politics face which got us thinking how the obstacles that women face as politicians translate to the debate . Kamala harris and mike pence are about to face each and the first Vice President ial debate and their difference in styles have political junkies wondering. They cant be true feminine or they risk not being taken tiers and if they are too asserted they are dubbed unlikable. Look what happened in 2008 when Hillary Clintons pantsuit saturated pop culture but the contrast made clear in an outfit. Please stop voter shopping my had on bikini pictures. And stop saying i have kinkles. And of course there is one of the oldest sexes tropes about women in politics. They are too emotional. I would ask for forgiveness anytime you need to get mad at me but i can be blunt. I will ask for forgiveness for a nova sometimes i get really worked up and sometimes they get a little hot. I dont really mean to. You can see the full video on politico. Com but lets get this conversation started. Maya harris thank you for joining me today. I will start with the video that shows the different ways sexism has been made of policy for a long time now and set the table for this conversation. What environment is it for woman running in particular for senator harris as joe bidens Vice President ial the way i look at it in 2016 was Hillary Clinton you wont catalogs some of them from 202,016 in that video. She is often subjected to attacks and coverage that was rooted in gender bias. Sometimes its out and out sexism and misogyny. I think writ large the political ecosystem did not recognize it as such. They thought there was something wrong with her and after she logged from my perspective a devastating eyeopening experience i we look at it differently now. The first Elizabeth Warren got into the race in january of 2019 there was a story that talked about her likability and i disappointed to see that story and a bunch of push back right away. Saying we are going to let this happen next time and we understand what it means. It means we both recognize a woman in this role. I feel that is just harder for women candidates. Its one of the reasons why the presidency is the exception here and the reason women candidates do so well is because once they have gone through very tough times they are really good candidates and they are really good at this. It takes a harder row to hoe but i think the public and be more aware of coverage and recognizing bias for electability. That is improvement and i think Kamala Harris is someone who is sort of a general critical iteration behind Hillary Clinton, harass her whole life had to be clear about who she is, a woman of color, a woman of mixed race. Shes had to find yourself and that is why i think its hard for people to throw her off her game in a way that other women candidates sometimes get pigeonholed. She has the benefit of operating in a system that is little more aware. Its not as if shes not having the same biases, also i think shes very skilled at defining yourself and not letting herself herself because shes had to do it her whole life. To your point there such a shift in terms of women embracing different aspects of themselves and femininity in a way that i want to put in a box if you are running because the shoulder pads you want to play a part. There certainly from 2008 there has been a massive shift. Maya you are one of the people the nose, love bess. Take us behind the scenes. This is probably hurt vaguest moment besides her first time knowing she would be bidens Vice President of candidate. Maya i think you are muted. If you cannot mute. There are. Taking it from atop. Shes excited. She is ready to give up on the stage. For her and for all of us campaigns are about choices and a debate is a chance for people to hear their voices and this election could be more clear and the differences couldnt be more stark and also for her as she has an opportunity for her to share her vision and really to show what they are for not just what they are not in not who they are running against because i think for her to want to be able to see what people are concerned about health, preexisting conditions and getting back to work and getting back to school what i can say is her sister is that this is personal for her. It isnt a big opportunity in terms of you know another big moment on the stage to be able to hear from people but its also personal for her. She talks a lot about the suffering and the grieving and what we are witnessing the impact on real people in this moment. We need to remember that, was someone who has her entire life in Public Service like literally her entire life fighting for people, fighting for truth focus has always been on bringing up boys are fighting for people who too often are not seen and not heard. It is personal for her to be on that stage and to speak the American People but also represent the issues that they care about and the last thing i would say is that she truly believes that joe is the right leader for this moment. Shes excited to get up there and really speak to why she believes he is the right are sent for this moment and he is going to move us in the direction we want to go as a country. We are now getting ready and im excited. Im ready. I have my kamala shirt on. Are you in salt lake . I am in salt lake. I got here yesterday, the day before yesterday but yes im on the ground. I want to follow up for one minute or the democrats have had a lot of debates the cycle so probably isnt the first time a lot of democrats anyway have seen her on the debate stage. You were not just talking to people within your party about different ideas. Is she looking at this differently for the fact that shes going up against the Vice President . You know im going to tell a secret. I can tell you shes ready and im definitely interested to hear what my good friend jen would have to say about that in terms of what they should be thinking about but let me tell you something she did specifically in how this is different from my the primary and how this is different from the debate we saw last tuesday. One i expect this is going to be a robust debate. Pens is a good debater. He saw that in 2016 and we witnessed that up close. The difference between 2016 and now its back there trump than pence were an experiment and now they have a record they have to defend but the other thing is that pence is a different kind of debater than trump. I dont expect we are going see tonight what we saw you know last tuesday. I think pence will be more reasonable sounding but i think, so i think thats obviously a different environment for having a debate but i think its important not to be confused. We saw that at the Republican National convention so i think that its going to be really important not only for kamala to be able to share their vision and at times hold him accountable for his record but also them moderator and the media to hold him accountable because he can say whatever he can say with confidence and a smile doesnt make what he says any more true for the American People. Sinner christine i want to bring into the conversation. You have known kamala for very long time from her days as a prosecutor in california. How do you think her legal background and her debate style and you expect her to take advantage of that tonight . Absolutely. Its great to be here with you powerful women ahead of the historic occasion tonight the first time a woman of color will be the Vice President ial debate. Lets take a moment and recognize that we are going to be witnessing history and i think thats really important because it speaks to the different audiences within the one big metaaudience. Most of all because its the first time that we have seen someone who looks like kamala on this stage this large. A lot of people and particularly women of color africanamerican and asian women are going to look and see themselves in she will be speaking to them the end second of all use a gender gap last week between the women saw bidens performance in the way the man dead. A lot of men said afterwards that biden should have been tougher on trump and the women said he played it just about right tough to us and not to his opponent and third when we look at kamala i remember a trial, lott had early in her career as a line attorney and she had recently come to the office with a big reputation and she was up against a guy who was such a famous defense attorney who was legendary and even have them movie made about him and everyone packed the courtroom thinking she was really going to lose and others would say no shes going to be great. Kamala put on a clinic. She does put on a clinic. She won every single charge. She was really, really well prepared and as my mom nancy pelosi says proper preparation for the best performance so kamala will be prepared and be that different kind of leader that we havent seen before. Number two that will be as joe biden was last week speaking to us the American People and not trying to win every single point against pence as to persecute his record as a whole and number three just as i saw her in the courtroom she is going to go through the evidence about a glee and carefully without passion or prejudice. It doesnt mean she wont have concerned comments shes trying to make an argument that any reasonable person would see that its unacceptable for the record to deserve a second term. Gem i want to go the annex. The backup of all of this is a very short night at points out its also historic. We are in the middle of a pandemic or the president himself had covid19 and going through that process. Pulling down all this negative ads. A candidate like kamala to approach this because you want to be hard and you want to be direct and prosecute your case but you also dont want to come off as unfeeling and uncaring for what the whole country is going through. Particularly if you are woman. We recommend senator harris you want to be aggressive but not too aggressive and thats conflicting advice but when it comes to Hillary Clinton Kamala Harris knows what that means. I actually think biden has set a good example for how to deal with this and to show empathy. Obviously honestly havent heard about it so i just hope everyone is doing well and lets hold them accountable for how they have dealt with the pandemic think you can do both of those things simultaneously and the pandemic, its not as if donald trump had a heart attack or came down with pneumonia for example. This is not an individual case. The pandemic affects every single american and it is so rooted in the president ial campaign and they have made the argument that they have been woefully lacking and how they have handled it. My father is a good anecdote. Hes 89 years old and a fellow republican. Hes a never trumper republican and he says you know i wish Kamala Harris were running and i wish you would go up against mike pence. Its so great. So tonight my father gets his wish that she is really effective. Not to raise expectations for her unduly. Pence is good too and he can be very effective but i think to be able to deliver a message in a way that biden couldnt it be a sienna hat where i decide. Its an opportunity for the biden harris ticket. I want to touch on what jen was just saying that Hillary Clinton advised dont get too angry. How concerned or how prepared does the senator have to be to not have the trope of the angry black woman come out if she is aggressive towards the Vice President or his aggressive and wanting to respond directly to any things she might think are the claims that he or are you saying that are true. I have course agree with jen. Having seen her literally now dozens of years you move in different spaces at different times. Im confident that she can calibrate you know and walk the balance of what is needed for a moment like this but i also want to underscore and agree with jen on the point being that this is an important moment but its an important moment that is defined by it trumps abject failure in the management of this pandemic. Its not like its a separate focus and i think thats really important to keep front and center and i think she will be able to as jen said walk that balance because its genuine. She and joe are genuinely wish the best for the president and the first lady and other people who have now found themselves infected with this virus and hope that it becomes a moment for everyone and most especially his own supporters to be able to see how serious this is and how serious people should be taking it and to model that you should be Wearing Masks and we should be social distancing and they actually have a plan for how to carry it forward through this moment. To the extent that he has genuine compassion and concern not only for the most recent round of people who have found themselves infected with this virus but acrosstheboard for more than 7 Million People who are expected to more than 200,000 people with families think that will come through generally because thats who she is and that i think she will the clear about mistakes and being clear about this divining moment in our country in terms of not just the pandemic that the leadership and the future and what we need Going Forward in the future. Can i add one thing to that . Kamala harris has had to temper and thread that needle for decades so she doesnt come across as angry black woman. I just think she is effective at delivering a message and she is effective at doing that. Kamala harris is going to have to do what women often do particularly because she is a woman of color and because she is in this race shes had experience in doing that and shes very effective at it. And even prevented from thec. The double standards. Weve been talking about this and 8000 net. For small, it doesnt matter what, says, she consented for an hour. That is what they do. And lets understand three things. Number one, no matter what she says, she will be attacked as being far far left rated very angry and the one is secretlys in control of joe biden. Because those are the three things they will use no matter what happens. So what we can do is number one, respond by having her back in the back entrance fact check and calling out those tropes the any we see them with a Rapid Response and saying, no, thats actually not what happened. And he would not say that about a man. If you would not say it about any should not say it about a woman. In the second thing is, remember mike pence as his audience as well. He has the American People who he wants them to see him as the future president. But his real audience is the one of donald trump. I think he will be under enormous pressure of personally attacking kamala and that is where, knows that is coming. She will be very strong about it. What we can do again to have her back is to say, he saying that because trump wants them to. He saying that because trump is afraid of women. And of strong women and he claims to love law and order but not when it is directed at him. On and something. Im not just been involved in the political campaigns my whole life but if he can direct this in that as a woman, this is really exciting to me. I think we know there are challenges. Jen and i lifted up with hillary. But it is exciting. I feel like a any people get to work for the first woman to be a major party nominee. And we win the popular vote by millions of votes. And then related to somebody who is, running for president the next year and so on the Vice President ial cycle. This is exciting. And just to the point about the people out there. As a sister, i am so not just proud of her but ive actually been moved by the support that weve experienced in this. And the enthusiasm that we have experience with this. The people who have been coming out overly been involved in the process before. And we talked about people who see themselves in her. I also just think there is groundswell actually of people who are really seen this is an opportunity in seeing this as time to move forward. And sing themselves in her. I think that for her, at the end of the day for me, it means so much. Its also much about her as it was as what is at stake. It is a hope for an administration and a government that they can see themselves in it and it will lessen their fears. And i know they will find that income. I think, there is a lot of energy and a lot of enthusiasm. A lot of people wanting to be self reflective about how they are approaching this campaign and this candidacy particularly in light of all of the things. Of these concerns, you know. In this cycle. I know you said were going to be winding up. I wanted direct a little bit of that excitement. Filled out there. Were singing out there. And i think that is going to carry us through. I think that youve been in the advisory role a lot and been out in the last 20 days for the election. Twenty different debate. How do you think the campaign can best use, and the closing days to make that argument. Maybe get that enthusiasm to the folks the maia is talking about the see themselves in her maybe they havent seen themselves and other candidates before. For this opportunity is tonight. And so hard for the democratic ticket to break through because that trump takes up so much oxygen. And this is just the most important moment that she has two be able to say that this is what we would do it a biden harris administration. And by her own presence as maia said, role model and show what is possible and celebrate that moment in history in america. And i think as to what biden has done in recent days, and the rent is much as you can. And to have her be publicly seen as much you can do. We will still not break through what trump does. And just at the white house. And out rising with all of the coverage. [inaudible]. And being out with all of the people. It just makes a really big difference and to use them in a way thats exciting people and being on the ground even at the small events. That will be a great contrast with what they see on the trump side. All right, will unfortunately, there on time. Thank you for joining us this afternoon. This first president ial roundtable. Women roll series. Will be back on wednesday november 11th at 1 00 p. M. Eastern. For a postelection conversation. The Justice Department has charged to british members with terrorism offenses. Related to their alleged roles in the kidnapping and killing of several american hostages. Politico reports that they will stand trial in federal court in the Eastern District of virginia. As fbi director christopher todays news conference. Todays announcement makes clear once again the committed terrorism remains the fbis top priority. And if the entire United States government remains committed to bringing to justice anyone who harms our citizens. We show the result to the world this week by repatriating americans who traveled to syria to support isis. So they will face charges here. Today were demonstrating the result by bringing to our shores, two men left britain to become isis terrorists. Now the boy to face justice in an American Court of law for crimes against american citizens. Not long after these terrorists were captured in 2018, the parents of the american victims wrote the following about their loved ones. One by one our children were taken from us by the hateful criminals of the islamic state. Jim, stephen, peter and caleb were like so any of your own sons and daughters. They were for unique passionate Young Americans and all risk their lives pursuing a greater good. The families of those victims suffered the painful loss of their loved ones at the hands of brutal killers. And while the pain may never fully subside. Today with the announcement of this indictment, we are beginning to bring them to justice they deserve. But well these families more than justice. We owe them our gratitude. And i say that because they are advocacy for their loved ones have led to positive changes in how our Government Supports and partners with victims families. One of those changes was a creation a few years ago of the hostage recovery. This Multiagency Team faced in fbi headquarters represents a government unified approach to recovering american hostages abroad. His single focus is to bring these hostages home safely and partner with their families in the recovery effort. A key part of that fusion cell is a Family Engagement team. That seemed not only coordinates support to family members of hostages during times of agony and uncertainty. It also supports hostages and families once the crisis is over. The fbi and partners are working tirelessly every day to recover all u. S. Hostages held abroad. And we will not rest until we see a similar resolution for justice against all those responsible for Holding Americans captive. Especially when those captives lives are taken. Today on also thank the men and women of the fbi entered a mistake international for their unflagging efforts to investigate charge and ultimately all these two men responsible for their crimes. Over the course of this investigation and any others like it, these dedicated professionals put themselves at risk conducting interviews and collecting evidence to build the cases that ultimately led us to where we are today. With these two men, facing justice in the United States. The attorney general, based on conversations ive had on a number of occasions including on the phone just this morning with the attorney general frighten of the attorney general joins us encouragingly thinking are british counterparts in our International Partners and working with the United States to bring charges in our criminal justice system. We mourn not only are american victims, but also the british victims, david haynes, and Alan Hennings friday and victims of all nations who suffered unimaginable cruelty at the hands of isis. Let there be no doubt that the fbi, the u. S. Government and our partners remain vigilant in the fight against terrorism including the threat from isis. Today, isis is still trying to tackle his people here in the United States and elsewhere through online propaganda in the Global Networks of supporters. Their goal is to motivate people to launch attacks against western targets where they are using any means available. But as todays announcement shows, the fbi and partners both here and overseas will continue to relentlessly pursue these terrorists and anyone he chooses to support terrorist organizations like isis. The matter where they are in no matter how long it takes. I honestly would tell you that i dont think when the dust settles in this and it will be with our market becomes more republican are more democratic. Or more liberal or more conservative, for red and blue. I think the choice in this election is whether america remains america. And as joe biden has said, from the moment he entered this race, it is about the souls of our nation. Who we are. What we stand for, and maybe most importantly, who we want to be.
