Joining is now on book tv is author nick adams the sixth book is just out. Here it is, trump and churchill. What did President Trump and churchill have in common cracks they have a lot in common. At first blush you would not think that to be the case one was 5foot six and loves to drink the other 6foot 3 inches teetotaler one famously in his pajamas every afternoon the other barely sleeps. And then to introduce tariffs and this compelling orator the other crude but very effective tweeter nonetheless. So on the surface so as i dig deeper with the western one you find that the man had remarkable similarities. And those alpha males both have a relationship with the media, endured massive battles at the establishment and that Neville Chamberlain and donald trump have barack obama between the times and the men and thats why write the book. Host when we look back at Winston Churchill history we often picture him with unanimous support. It certainly wasnt that way. Winston churchill was a disruptor. And decided to do things a different way. And those that have been in the fold for a long time that they can to stop it. And then to offer those excerpts from those from the early forties. And i didnt tell you they were from British National newspapers referring to churchill you may thank you were reading the Washington Post that it was about donald trump so similar those criticisms and the accusation that they dont listen to anybody around them that they have instinct and that theyre too optimistic thing weve heard about donald trump those criticisms leveled. In both were parties switchers as well but Winston Churchill was a lifelong politician he had a stint in the military so they had different backgrounds that they were fluid in the early years with the political affiliations that they had but what both men had in common was a love of country and the every day ordinary person and they had sentiments that resonate with people at the time many of the viewers would remember seeing churchill going into the tube in london and he did this with the regular commuters and he had that great relationship with the average person. And surprisingly because he was wealthy and born into money and in the same way donald trump is a billionaire businessman that seems to have a lot of bluecollar taste for what he eats and what he does but very relatable donald trump is junk food churchill ate too much like we do on occasion and drink too much i think these are all things that we look at as humans and say the things that i do hes pretty normal. You mention the times were similar. Certainly right now what were going through with the invisible enemy like a churchill tire on type of phrase that trump uses to bash the coronavirus. There were some warlike circumstances right now. And to see mayor diblasio come out and accuse the president to paddle false optimism with the respect of the coronavirus go all lot that is similar and trump is clearly on the inside. Churchill of course was fighting the axis powers overcoming not see tyranny. And in many ways Donald Trumps fight is a cultural fight and a battle for values and the force does have some foreign enemies but really i think most people need the most major for there is elements of the Republican Party or the democrats and others. Host the subtitled the defenders of western civilization. What do you mean with western civilization and how do they defend it . I think as having a set of values and they tend to have the English Speaking world and the United States of america, the United Kingdom, australia and canada and new zealand are the countries of the lot of influence on values and morals that they use all around the world. So western civilization is most of europe and the United States and those kind of countries not including china are large parts of the middle east so in terms of defending it those men intensely patriotic they love the values or the traditions that exist in the nation and back then churchill was a big supporter of the values in england and donald trump is a big supporter how america has been the Campaign Slogan make America Great again. And what has happened in the better country stays that way and a throwback that people find comfortable and restrictive they really believe in the west with the Police System and the models contained within. How long have you been familiar with churchill when i was just eight years old gave me a book of speeches and instructed me not only to read that we read as many times as i possibly could because there was no one better to learn from so when i was in the eighth grade one of my best friends to this day gave me a copy of the art of the deal and that is where my lifelong admiration began. And given the United Kingdoms relationship with australia someone that features prominently in history class to say americans are very familiar and its rather atypical because they dont take an interest of what goes on and to be so big and so powerful for what is going on elsewhere. But he was an exception for a variety of reasons his mother was american and number two the only person in the history of the United States whos ever received honorary citizenship. And number three and a point to make repeatedly in the book is very american. A bald guy, refused to conceal his true self and expectations and then to remember how political culture is in the United Kingdom for what it is now donald trump is a maverick but a nation where that is a long tradition of them so in england it was remarkable for someone like Winston Churchill to come along because the United States and United Kingdom their political culture has to the ditty and admiration. So then to come out of nowhere and have no palms that is truly unique. Host Winston Churchill never visited australia. And things were different back then and comes to the United States many times and delivered his famous iron curtain address i encourage all of your viewers if they get the chance to visit the Churchill Museum there thats a fascinating and was on the train with the president of the United States when he was on the trip so if he could be brought born again anywhere to be in the United States of america but never to be a quote Winston Churchill with that complement where he said while i do for some of their customs chief among them being your refusal to drink during meals in this lines up with those that i speak to audiences all across the country that america always does the right thing after exhausting every other option. Nick adams you have a similarity to churchill and the us . We do. That is something that always stuck with me with america. Churchill was a huge americana fan he loves everything about the United States of america dont worry america is going to be okay. Im sure his mother had a lot to do with that and his readings ring true today. He saw something in the United States and the temperament and the personality he said more in with the flamboyance and as opposed to have those relaxed british. Very much so. He wanted to write something that gave a Historical Perspective on the Trump Presidency because so much has been said from all sides about donald trump and the administration. But very little and it was understandable only three and half years and and we dont know what will happen if he will be reelected with the prospects nobody has written what donald trump look like in history and i found that to be an interesting proposition that i decided to explore now i was on the trump train on june 2015 to write down the escalator with a lifelong admiration from reading the art of the deal and i felt that environment that existed in america at the time a normal politician a matter how articulate wasnt going to cut it. And then to alter the course. And ultimately that was good fortune always been a big trump guy. And as time goes on of course that comes from Vincent Van Gogh the artist who while he was alive his artwork wasnt considered that much but after he died so in the same way history will look kindly at donald trump and what hes doing right now. And in many cases that so many had for him they do you think that will be the case in a couple of decades from now. And that bold claim is forced to can seem it is remarkably bold 20 years into the century is that i do think if he does get elected for another 40 years to have an magnitude that to become the greatest speaker of that century. What was your Research Process . We went deep we look at media and read all of the churchill books. With of the biographies. And then to take a deep dive and what makes him Winston Churchill we look at all the speeches and in the back of the book we have chosen what i consider to be the five big speeches of both men. And so we tried to get both men as we could to find out everything we could to what made them who they were and who makes them the leaders that they are. In that Research Process and then to be failed a lot as well. And with the passage of time and then that 25th of april and that was a really bad decision but in new zealand and donald trump of course had Great Success as a businessman and then and it didnt work out the way they wouldve hoped. And it was very clear which actually made them perfect for that moment they found themselves in. Bed everything that occurs in with air disappointment and just make them ideal. You keep saying we. The primary Research Team helping me edit. And i certainly had some assistance. Is something they cannot do. But unfortunately from back in the good old days. And you can find them online. To have an encyclopedia in the pocket and then to go in westminster at the place knowing that this would be the upcoming book and then to education missing anything. They havent been able to implement that. And with covid19 that i was planning on book tour to be a precise replica of churchill speaking and precisely. But unfortunately that has been put on hold. Simon schuster have done any kind virtually or otherwise . Zoom and skype have become my best friends occasionally i do some audience stuff as well. And to hearings whatever the law is. Things will open up a little bit. And that readers will enjoy. You mention your favorite speeches what about churchill or trump. Churchill on trump was in poland and that was well received by the media one of the only times in the presidency where that has happened. Moving eloquently on freedom and values and that seems to be when he is at his political and just listening to that and that we have an ipod and have all of his speeches on the ipod and that the queen gave a few years back is a listen to that all the time i can only imagine what that must of been like hearing in those days. Host where you based now and what is your organization calle called . Im in the dallasfort worth area. Thats right decided to hang my boots for a variety of reasons. And in the middle of the country that is important to be wherever i have to be on my organization is flag for american greatness and when we last spoke in january 2017 it was just growing and just beginning and im pleased to say the National Organization with a milliondollar budget and doing phenomenal things. So flag usa. Org we going to schools. We know at mcadams because he admires Winston Churchill that first be true in your view. It would be very interesting to see donald trump with a diet coke in one hand and concerned churchill can be sitting down next to each other and speaking unfavorable terms about the media and journalists and the Political Party and the predecessor and to have a very interesting conversation. The newest book trump and churchill defenders of western civilization thank you for spending time with us today on today on the tv. Always a pleasure. Without loss of confidence unable to trust to we are told by anyone who calls himself an expert it becomes very difficult to rise to a challenge the first reaction is to say know they are lying to us but a lot of the National Institutions have a take on the challenge of persuading people that they exist for us. Good afternoon it is my honor and pleasure from across the United States and around the world to this conversation for the new book which it bookshelves today. Former cia officer into the
