The last time i was in nevada was probably about a month and a off ago. I got a tour around even a little bit before that. The first time i came was long before he got into this, probably sometime early april or may in 2018. Had a great lunch and everybody said if you are ever going to learn anything about iowa, you have to meet this woman name jan bauer. I was a little nervous. Shes been teaching me all the way so long. So i appreciate both your warm we will always carry names and also your endorsement for sure. [applause] look about this time of year you people from all over the country and they visit you and try to make some accentuated connection to iowa. Not going to tell you about my greatgreatgrandparents in hendrick county in 1850 and im not going to tell you that my mom was born in ottumwa. Yes she was. This not why we gather. Right. We gather for the sake of our country for the sake of our country, standing in this what we are going to pass on to the next generation. We gather to make sure donald trump is the one term president. [applause] its not the only reason though, more than just beating him but at this. Soundly rejecting his behavior that he is normalizing. Mac lies in the mistake in the bay abuse of powers divided by race and gender and by nationality, geography, he behavior now we expect more out of our preschoolers than we do the president of the United States. It is more than about meeting him or beating him. Its about offering something better. Its about soundly rejecting and giving back to things like decency. Bringing people together entering the government and actually work for the people. Showing that everybody where ever they are has a fair shot at a better live. Because we as democrats win, and you win at stark county, we went everywhere, its about offering something better. Its about showing up and listening and giving them credit people a reason to vote for us not just against him. Thats how we win, thats how we always have one every single time. My background a little bit raised in montana a single parent household. I only knew there was governor house in town be said to deliver newspaper there. I mean, it literally four blocks and live from where i was raised. But i worked my way for through college and i borrowed my way through law school. Ill never forget that day my wife and i ate off what would be 175,000 in todays terms of my student debt. Yet it impacted what i could do so long the way for sure. But when i was a boy, 90 percent of 30 yearolds were doing better than their parents at age 30. 60 percent today, havent had a pay increase in 40 years. In two thirds of the counties in this country, it actually lost business. We shouldnt have to leave my school or my tertiary Community Just make a distant leaving. Running up and delivering to the governor his house to living in it, i actually have the opportunity to live the American Dream. We have to recognize far is it too many people in this country, far is it too many communities of color, denied. For women who are still making if and only was 85 cents on the dollar, thats a 80 cents on the dollar or millennial struggling with this college debt. That dream has been deferred. If you think about immigrants, that dream has now been derailed. For shopkeepers and farmers and factory workers, high school raju its only, then American Dream has been destroyed. So this has to be about beating donald trump but also has to be about making sure the economy, can start working for people again so they believe that things can be better. But first things first. I am going to be a single issue voter this election. The deep dark secret we never tell you because we love you to death until february and then we leave. And then you are still stuck right now with the legislature stripping away rights of teachers and workers and women. We need to make sure we have somebody at the top of the ticket and i do believe i am the best candidate to do that to take that message all parts of the country i refuse to look at the votes of rural americans for those who work up early or who are forever somehow wedded to a con man from new york. These are the voters that dont come back to us. [applause] and i know there are big promises but what is today . The 22nd. Write this down if i nominee , i will be in california. Massachusetts, vermont, a whole lot of those dates we need those people who need those states and that is how we when i am a prochoice, poor you will prounion i was in a red state not by compromising values by getting stuff done. At the core of the progresses is to make progress in peoples life as a governor when you actually provide healthcare and Education Funding and protecting civil liberties. Because i fear at times washington has become a place where talking is a substitute for doing. People want to believe that government can work for them to address the challenges that are here and now. My legislature is more republican than yours in iowa. Know that was not a joke. [laughter] but we can expand health care and have Health Parity and also making record investments in the teacher to one teachers can collectively organize we take dark money out of the elections actually by investing and freezing College Tuition for students. And try to have Common Ground we dont have to compromise our values. We took every attack on a womans right to make her own health care. [applause] lee kept public land in public hands stopping back the renewable efforts before i got into all of this montana is still a state where you can argue for better working conditions and wages. [applause] i never forget trying to get Medicaid Expansion past the first time the heart of the anti obama care we were in show toll montana everybody knew because of the Koch Brothers were kind enough to mail everybody the glossy pictures to barack obama saying that you are coming to your healthcare. That i showed up anyway and instead of just telling them what they need i actually listen the first said we are in a small town 43 percent of the people walking these doors do not have Health Insurance for golf couple folks got up afterwards they may have called me a socialist or that i would destroy america but maybe the fifth speaker was the chair of the county commissioner a rancher not even from shoto he was from a suburb a population of 50. [laughter] he got up and goes i was born in this hospital it save my life two years ago when i had a heart attack for if we lose this hospital the town is gone. Instead of telling me what they needed i actually listened as i gave that Republican Legislature to give courage to defy Party Leaders to know that every single vote matters we have to assume with the base assumption that most peoples lives are too frantic to care about politics. Will make it get sick . Will i lose my job . But you want to save communities you want to roof and a decent job in Public Schools not Charter Schools or private high schools the good clean air and water and to do better for the next generation those are the values of the democrats that they want and that we can win along the way. I think dc can learn from montana even though some people think its a small populated state theres larger populations in delaware or vermont. [laughter] but in some respects im the only governor left in this race. Some say you got into late. Four months ago i got in and why i did not get it until then the legislature meets 90 days every two years we got medicaid through 2018 and try to get it through and Ballot Initiative 2018. Literally spending 26 million with that reauthorization. So i had a job to do. I could chase more donors or save healthcare. I chose to do my job. [applause] signed my last bill on a monday and i announced on tuesday and i will be day gift by thursday i was not here in iowa. [laughter] the dnc rules to spend 50 or 60 to get one dollar on mine but the National Party looks like its more important to be talking to donors or saving donors then saving peoples lives at the end of the day. But that is not how you lead or how you win the elections and also not how you make a difference in peoples lives. Dc to learn something from montana and it will not be easy until we address what is holding us back with the influence of money Everything Else democrats talk about will be that much harder. Think about it. Lindsey graham said we have to get the tax cut through to make the donors happy. 44 percent of americans dont have 400 in case their car breaks down. We pay more for prescription drugs than any other country in the world yet generational workers policed by independent contractors same membership is and what it was in the eighties Oil Companies are making record profits literally the only Political Party now that doesnt acknowledge that Climate Change is real as the republican party. For all of these issues it is that much harder to get anything done. With the attorney general tom miller at the same time this a little case called Citizens United it equates corporations with money with speech. Remember when i decision came down . They all said theres nothing we can do. We talked about it. We gave speeches about it. We raise money on it. But it didnt do a dang thing. Montana has a dark history around the turnofthecentury the copper barons controlled literally every local state and federal election. To the point people even knew about it beyond montana. They said montana buys politicians like we buy food. And finally they said enough is enough for them to spend and contribute in that election and i will be darned if we have the lowest contributions in the country it is great to represent democracy. But elections have become about this and people talking to people. Since the Citizens United issue came down as attorney general i took the first case all the way to the Supreme Court of former statewide republican to say the threat of all the spending could corrupt what happens in the state house. Im so excited we will change the world and another years of 100 years of montana law to be thrown out. Dont ever doubt what one justice can do when it comes to our democracy, womens rights and environmental protections for something so important you still have to find a way. So the legislature was two thirds republican at that time we passed a law that said 90 days out from election i dont care what you call yourself americans for america before you spend you have to disclose every dollar that you spend and in 2016 americans for prosperity founded by the Koch Brothers 93 days out we did such a good mailing in montana that was so well targeted it even showed up at the guard line governors house. My three kids are looking at it. Are you really that much of a creep . [laughter] but that it stopped on day 90 if we can kick them out of the montana we can do that here in iowa and everywhere in this country. [applause] so we need legislative action but we dont even have to rely on that. There is an executive order in montana and i cannot tell you what you can spend on our election but if you have a contract with the state of montana you have to disclose every dollar you are contributing or spending in those elections. Think of the federal government did that. If they would be like nascar sponsored by Different Companies at least we should know whos doing the sponsor. This is the most important election in my lifetime how many times have you heard that . Because its not just about beating donald trump but preserving keeping the experiment of Representative Democracy to make sure about making sure that people move back to communities that you have a viable opportunity its about making sure the American Dream still exist. Weve got big challenges in this country. Remember how united in the days after 9 11 people felt. We need that same purpose and compassion in that unity to make us understand we share more in common than what separates us. And that really is to know you do have a fair shot at the American Dream. I have been here. I think this is my 12th trip and i think i have learned something about iowa. Never say you understand iowa but iowa nice is that you dont take this obligation of being the first in the country as systemic but you take it seriously. You know that you have a role that is so important not just for the estate houses but for the entire country and i am a nice is you are somewhere on my list. Is your list 37 or four or five quick. I ask you before anybody i ask you to take a close look joined tom miller because someone i cannot only win this election but beat donald trump s you can go back to your state house in the last official in story county that matters quite a bit along the way. Not National Debate stages so please take a look i dont know if you want me to take any more time or shut up because i will answer questions you are the guy with the gun. [laughter] i will answer almost any question just not yours. [laughter] just joking. How do you tackle trump . One, we have to get some of the voters back but you cant make it all about trump part of what you do is call out the behavior is the perfect example. Every week something crazy comes out of the white house but with a handful of months ago to say about those duly elected members of congress. And then he sat there for 12 seconds during that rally to listen to the scrutiny sent her back send her back for the next two and half weeks the National Media they talk about wasnt that horrible . But at the same time everybodys talking about how he was in federal court trying to triple the preexisting coverage can diss condition to take away obama care. And to privatize Public Education about the same time blm spending his whole career trying to transfer federal land how you treat him is how you treat the adolescent as you call them out on his behavior but you dont focus on it every day but you focus on everyday lives so lets be honest job growth has been slower under trump and obama so the deficit has gone up the number of insured has gone up bankruptcies and farms have gone up and then to point out what this man has done for this country and i respect and what it has done in the every day struggle. He said that he drain the swamp but he didnt he can do this over the next year and a half without making it all about donald trump. [applause] the people that i work with were not cheering they were saying wrap it up. So one last short story when i was elected in 2012 and i moved into the governors residence the youngest in 40 years in montana my sixyearold son kicks the soccerball and those paintings are 250,000 that i said take him down. We have to live here. So the first time i would speak to all the members of the legislature it was deeply divided two thirds republican and they said you hear different noises from the governors hous house. Thats the sound of young kids. And we as elected leaders have to recognize that kids learn from words and deeds of what we do and what we say matters. Our kids are watching. Thats more true today than ever before. We have to ask ourselves what are we giving the next generation to aspire to or be inspired by . But all of that have to answer. We can be better or bridge those divides. We can show people the economy, the democracy at work and do it without trying to help trump to elevate. I so appreciate the most important dinner. Is not like the steak from the other county. [laughter] thank you so much. Our next speaker is the admiral and while hes coming up so the other day a good friend of mine stopped me to say i had such a great experience the other day. I said what was that . He said i had the opportunity to take my son down to the tavern and have a first drink with him. Really cracks how did i go . He said i got a mcginnis and he did not like it so i drank it. So i got him an oldstyle and he didnt like it so i drank it. I god of an irish red and he didnt like it so i drank it. By the time we got to the Irish Whiskey i can barely push the stroller back home. [laughter] admiral . [applause] to make thank you i appreciate the introduction how many people have heard me speak before . Have been in story county twice i tell people i wear the cloth of our country at war and at peace with the strategic Anti Terrorism unit took command of the Aircraft Carrier against the taliban and al qaeda but when they come ashore every two years you get a doctorate in economics as well as national security. And then with those policy positions with president clinton in the white house. But when i came home from that war had to stand in a Military Hospital with my wife with malignant brain cancer they said they could not get it you think its blast oma. Only 80 percent of kids have survived. And she was one of them. I had a Health Care Plan in the military where photon beam therapy. We have to get to it. And is here because of this country and with a two one district i was a second democrat since the civil war. I ran on one campaign refrain. But now i take whats in 2005 with now obama care and i put that up but 100 percent of the organization for women and 95 percent of the human rights and i was reelected. [applause] surprised by 20 points and raising 3 million to run again and i did not spend one penny. Not one scenting campaign ads. But we also knew when we disagreed we would disagree well. I got out of government so Arlen Specter a republican senator who try to humiliate anita hill for Sexual Harassment now Supreme CourtClarence Thomas furcal i put
