Silence you are talking about is indicative of the fact we have an increasing amount of people who feel as long as you get done what i want done i will look the other way because the other part doesnt affect me. Gives up nothing without resistance, without a fight, without demand, thank you. Can you hear me now . When trump won the election i took to my bed for two weeks. But you are out now, that is good. Had to. No matter how i feel about trump how i feel is not going to get rid of trump. Even in this discussion we focus so much on trump and what is happening because that is where we are but the action is not here. People at the grassroots are kicking butt. Those two kids in alabama who went to counties, put 30 counties, those are the people that are going to win this. I would like you to respond, to me the role of governments policy but i dont see how we are going to get rid of trump without supporting people at the grassroots. Goes back to the bonus issue. A lot of this is grassroots, grassroots will take control and change. Also, a Communications Director at the national aclu, wonderful communication specialists, but anyway, the thing i want to say about it is she is right, one of the reasons i have started supporting grassroots local organizations instead of just supporting national organizations. When i find people, i found some people today in florida, i like to give them help and support and they go out and work all the time on issues, they work on candidates but they want to get the right local candidates, they know about the state legislature and this and that but it is the grassroots folk. The Democratic Party is locked out, grassroots, that is why the party is so decimated in all those offices, you got to work at the grassroots and policy. Talking about issues of policy, i was thinking about democrats not having any policy, i hadnt thought about that. When republicans came out with their tax bill i kept thinking where is the democratss tax bill, maybe i can get behind that, whatever it is, but they didnt have one. That tax bill was to object to Different Things in the republican tax bill and to say we dont need to change it. You have to change it. If people feel there should when there is a big policy you ought to propose something that is your thing that you think you ought to do. They said just go against whatever. In any kind of sport you have to have offense and defense, you cant just defend against an attack what someone else is doing. Let the grassroots flower and supporting people at the grassroots not only on the big political policy issues but on issues like criminal justice reform, helping women who are drug addicted and have children, the criminal Justice System coming out, there are all kinds of organizations in towns and cities and new orleans and savannah and arkansas and so on. Find those people, help them, the grassroots is where the power is and the opportunity is. I have a question to follow up on the role the black Community Service and the movement we are seeing now. Im from a Baptist Community in arkansas and i would argue a lot of the problems i have with the administration are in the black church as well. And having the same opportunities to be preaching in churches, we talk about better relations, the president constantly as judges and secretaries, talking about sexuality, not allowing the Lgbt Community the same representation, allowing transgender people in the military. Im wondering what these socially conservative values predicated on exclusions, what role do you think the black community and black church can serve to make sure we are not perpetuating those as well. There may be similarities but theres one distinct difference. I dont have to go to your church but i have to live in your country and when it comes to Public Policy it has a different tenor to it. It has to protect our rights to disagree, to have our own preferences, our own ideologies because we are americans and it has to be, has to design itself in such a way that is inclusive of all people. When it comes to church and church today in the 21st century you can log online, get you a license and start a church and develop an ideology and colletta doctrine and there is no prevailing voice to control what you teach or preach as a leader so when we need to agree the church can move forward on, he can start one tomorrow and go the other way and i have no power over it. I wouldnt necessarily say the church is exclusive from a what happens outside the church but teachers telling you in school as well. Im wondering do you think theres any responsibility for the church to make sure people in the community feel welcome even if they are not going to the same church . I get your point. We are who he is, theres differences based on doctrine and theology. We have a lot of people, i want to get to every last one. Lets get it quick and succinct. No opinions, just give me your questions. I dont want to be Sarah Huckabee sanders. [laughter] thank you. Stop shaking your head. When he is gone, god bless, go ahead. I would like to know the panels thoughts on democratic socialism. That he can get his essence was probably a socialist. What is the panels thoughts . About democratic socialism. Who would like to take that. What doctor king said about it. I will be short. What doctor king said about it was unregulated capitalism was evil and he was opposed to unregulated capitalism. That it had to be regulated in the interest of the common good and socialism without any role for the individual would also be bad and he would be against that and what was needed was a combination of regulated capitalism and socialism. That is what he said. I am a black immigrant from cameroon and im here to represent exactly i came here, worked myself through school and i do have a job in the city. What i want to say on behalf of all the black immigrants is we should stay vigilant and think about what was said beyond the racial sanctions. America in my opinion has become in money we trust. What was said was if you think you come from a rich country somehow you are able to contribute but we are here about the content of your character and what you are able to do with your self. What do we do to reclaim the soul of america . That is why i came here. In money we trust. I agree with what you said. I dont propose to know what was in the mind of the person who made the statement we are talking about but i think theres more involved in it than just black and white. It is about money and the attitude about respecting money and not respecting people who dont. Theres an economic component of the conversation that has gotten swallowed up by race. You are spot on in the fact that most extremely wealthy people have a tendency to respect other extremely wealthy people. That conversation and the way it was phrased is a reflection of the disrespect and disregard for other forms of wealth that exist outside of money. One of the things i just came back from a tour with five countries. I have come to develop a deep appreciation for other types of wealth and other types of culture and things that are regarded in other countries, not just africa but around the world that goes beyond the way america is going. We have become so consumed that we trust more in finances than we do and anything else. I dont know how to fix that. Im holding down my corner as best i can but what i think it is, it goes down seriously to the core of how we raise our children because values while they are important only reach a certain demographic. How you raise children and what you teach them is important and that is how we change it, every mother, every father who has a child teaches them what matters and what is important. Thank you for being so bold and coming to the like. We celebrate the life and legacy of doctor king, i wonder what your hopes are, what are some important parts of his story and his message you would like to see emphasized and some pitfalls about the way his message might be used and oversimplified at times that you think are important to avoid . There was an oped posted by a website and it was Something Like dont politicize mlk, his life was about unity. Sometimes there is a temptation because he is someone who has now been claimed by everyone to forget he was less popular than donald trump. He was never involved in a campaign or series of protests that were ever popular. If it was up to a popular vote there would be no bus boycotts, no sit ins at the counters, the margin washington would have been called off. There would have been no civil rights act, Voting Rights act. That causes Martin Luther king fought for were wildly unpopular with the american populace and they had to be earned with blood, sweat and tears and if you think we like to believe sometimes in a cartoon character version of Martin Luther king that did not exist and was not who he was or what he was. The common attack on him at the time was that he was a communist. When we look at what he believed in terms of foreign policy, labor, Martin Luther king could probably be described as a maybe communist labor organizer. Many of the people who now claim and somewhat coopt his legacy and name and words, the type of person they would be denouncing in contemporary politics. It is important to remember that. Beyond that as i noted earlier, there are contemporary conversations we are having where you dont have to squint your eyes very much to see where someone like mlk might stand on these things. When people try to dress themselves in his name and his likeness at times when they are in contradiction it is interesting, you think about the firestorm around professional athletes peacefully protesting, and yet many of the same people upset by that today were posting quotes from Martin Luther king. Look at many of the people very upset about disruptive protests, black lives matter shutting down the highway in a city, or raising their voice during a play, many of the people very upset by that were posting mlk quotes and clearly not writing a letter from birmingham jail which argues for disruptive protests, the way we do this, inconvenience you to paying attention because otherwise we would be waiting forever for you to listen. We even, this is not just on the political spectrum, you see many, theres a debate in the Democratic Party about what the future of the Democratic Party is, to what extent it should be courting people who might be described as white moderates, that same letter from birmingham jail had choice words about the role of white moderates and whether they were the people specifically impeding the progress of black americans even more so than those in the clan. We like to sometimes writings of kink were so long ago in distant when in the reality they are very germane to our contemporary conversations but that is a lot harder. It is a lot harder to vote for an invasive or if you know and believe what doctor king thought about foreign conflict, harder to impose your union when you know he was a labor organizer. We need to collectively grapple with what his actual policies and policy solutions where if we are going to collectively once a year get together and tell about who he was. [applause] i want to address part of the question you didnt talk about to the gentleman who has the question, where would we like to see it go from here. The whole issue, there are many issues still to be addressed but systemic racism as opposed to white sheets and burning crosses is the issue today. Invisible forms of racism. I grew up with the third bathroom and the colored water fountains. That is all gone but there are invisible enemies that threaten the future of our communities that i would love to see addressed and one of them right at the height of it i cannot stress is repairing the criminal Justice System. 70 of our people are incarcerated for nonviolent crimes, locked up, pleabargaining and corruption that exists in the criminal Justice System is helping to destroy families, destroying families, leaving children without fathers and now more contemporary steps and until we go back and fix some of the things, considering some of the people who are incarcerated in jail are incarcerated in jail for petty crimes, marijuana use, crimes the law has changed and the judge can smoke a joint in an area where you just put somebody in jail for. We have to find a way, our criminal Justice System hasnt caught up with the 21stcentury and our families are suffering for it. It is a new form of slavery and we need to address it. That is what i was like to see. Hashtag race in america. I want to thank you for having this. It has been very helpful. I have a concern im not sure can be answered but i would like you to think about it. We are clearly aware the stock market is going crazy and corporations are making lots of money and lots of profit and they tend to be influencing our government and our society in humongous ways and often times crimes and people being convicted, they move in the direction by doing the wrong thing and people we tend to hold accountable in the media are usually the ceos or Corporate Leaders which i would like us to begin to think about the board of directors because it is the board of directors want profit and want to support the ceos to go after things, they give the directions but they stay behind the scenes and quietly doing this and have responsibilities. My concern is is there a way we can look at the board of directors and what do they do to change the direction of the corporation rather than just blame the ceo and fire him and move on . Activism. Activism. I think he wants an answer. Everything people have talked about can be influenced by activism. What your church does, that issue about whether the church is doing whatever, you can have activism in the church, so that the church goes in the direction you want if it is not engaged in social programs, that is an arena for activism. If you want to change what the corporation does, the board of directors, when we wanted corporations to stop dealing with south africa we went down and close down shell oil headquarters, we closed it down, okay. Theres activism around that too. Also shareholders, getting them to vote on shareholder resolutions and who is on the board. Those are all forms of activism. I think a claim to be made our allies and need to be held accountable and recognized. Very good point. Yes, maam . Just to quickly recognize i appreciate the god of abraham, isaac and jacob for allowing my husband and myself to commandeer most everyone here and i want to thank politics and prose for having it. My uncle used to bring me here and shared it with his children. It is an example hopefully in other communities, there are places to have dialogue and civil conversation around topics that are really hot, so thank you for that. I want to comment and question briefly you mentioned the topic of race in america as what it looks like Going Forward and i want to know if the topic whatever change to be nationality in america because since race can limit or define or box some of us, for myself i identify myself as an israelite, part by way of the Transatlantic Slave Trade so what race do i fit and how can i be part of this conversation . The other question i want to ask you about, activism and just, you are right, no greater high. We do volunteer work in the prisons on a regular basis and working with women in teaching and parenting and fathers teaching and parenting as well and restructuring family is going to make a difference as we repair the generational curse of dysfunction and what not. I wanted to ask you have a lot of questions. I will try to be succinct. Can we leave it there . We have a lot of people . One more please . You mentioned about trump and the issue with trump. Trump, i wanted to find out we talked about you are away from the like now. As being a strategy towards surprise strategy of some of the things he is doing for Legal Immigration to ilLegal Immigration and being surprised by that. I know some of the pastors in christian organizations have pretty much, there was some support for trump at some point. I was wondering if you could give us an update on where that might stand now, not that you speak for all but if theres any insight you can give us to that collaborative support. I am so thankful for politics and prose for doing race in america. I am sure we can incorporate. No, dont say that. This program, where did she go . This is not about only black people coming to talk about the question of their own race and everybody here is of a particular race. It is about discussing the issue of race in america and anybody can come and discuss the issue and race is an issue in america. It has been an issue. Race is americas original t. A. R. P. Original sin. Madison and jefferson said that. It remains an unresolved problem. There are other programs. We talked about it in the last 5 programs, i will take that into consideration. I take what you say into consideration as well. I hear you when you say you are a black israelite, you are in israelite. Okay. I appreciate that but i will say this to you. Unfortunately in this time when people see you the first thing they see is color. Then they see your gender. And i know what you are, what you have told me, you professed what you are. But people dont see that. They see you as a black woman. That is an issue of race in america. I hear you, i hear you. It is sad. We are individuals, we are not who we are in the eyes of the people who see us. You walk in front of some people you are black and then you are a woman and you have a double whammy. I am serious. Shirley chisholm, the first black woman to run for president of the United States in 1972 that is what she said. Can i do it . As best i can tell, by and large, primarily the Largest Group of white evangelicals supportive of donald trump support his field even though it is waning to a minute degree by and large it is still there and they make up part of his base. And he doesnt go to church he does not go to church no comment. I am serious, he doesnt. The vast majority, the vast majority of africanamericans doesnt quote scripture either. Dont ascribe to that level of support. And he doesnt have a pet. By
