The white activity happened when two people scrambled and they heard got word that there was going to be a railroad from the east to the west and it was going to go to gain and they built a sawmill and they iran out of money and then james glover is considered the father of spokane but they came and bought them out and when the town started to connect with the native americans totally outnumbered the first settlers here. They were very friendly to them and glover started the store and most of his customers were native american and the customs were different people and a lot of settlers were unfamiliar with that and offended the indians. It worked out between the native americans and settlers. It was later when the problems when the government got involved with their troops and stuff. That was when the big problem started colonel came in with a bunch of troops and they are driven out and after that colonel wright came in he was going to eradicate the indians and thats where he hung a number of them at the heymans creek and thats where they got its name. It was a war against the indians. He burned their supplies and the worst thing he ever did he rounded up their horses there were over 700 indian horses and thats what they consider their wealth, the horses. He rounded up and killed every single one of them, they were shot to death. They had some pretty bad times from the whites during the early spokane times. Spokane was a drawing for activity and it was a beautiful place with the river and the falls. The first white activity happened when peoples built a sawmill here and they got word that there would be a railroad coming from the east to the west and it would go through spokane. It wasnt verified with a headword. Its because of this location and its resources and especially in the surrounding responses. Spokane became a rail house. Fiber is given to spokane and the railroads came. They had a massive timber and what brought the real rush, they were running out of timber in the east so they were gradually ignoring nap at the prospect was coming with gold in the area and thats what started it and from the gold rush that lasted about two years and they discovered the Mineral Deposits and thats when the real town started to develop. A lot of the miners iran their businesses out of spokane. A lot of them were rough and rowdy and a lot of drinking and they were a lot more comfortable bringing their families to spokane and thats when they settled in the short south hills. That was their infrastructure of this area. Some of the major impacts where the fire of 1889. They had the panic of 1893. Thats when a lot of the wealthy people lost their money. It lasted for five or six years and was pretty bad. A lot of the people that were set to make it big failed. The Mining Industry was effected the most from the 18 80s panic. Everything closed down and things stopped and as a matter fact, around that same time they had the money and martial law and wallace and kellogg and the whole area was in a lot of turmoil at that time. It was all based on the economy. Once the panic was over things started booming again and some are described in one word newspaper that the building going on was like an anthill. People building all over the place. It really developed. A lot of the big buildings came up in the minds had richer bodies of war and it was a good time. Spokane was called the golden age. Things were looking good and for good. Spokanes early success was one that stands out the most was levi and the settlement. Levi was an orphan and their family situations bad and they were part owners of the hercules meet mine and it was up outside of burke, idaho. That mine was the richest lead, zinc mine and he built the hutton building, the Hutton Settlement and he left an endowment that keeps making money they have a good board of directors and they know how to handle it and it is perpetual. There has been some endowments timelimited but the Hutton Settlement is perpetual. The campbell house. He was another wealthy mining person in his house is donated to the museum and its donated to spoke a from the campbell family. Theres a lot of wealthy people that wanted to do good for the community and left things behind. One of the major buildings in spokane was the davenport hotel. That came about right after the great fire of 1889. Louis davenport came to spokane and built a boundary there and he was extremely sharp and very nice person and he built a restaurant. The restaurant bloomed, became successful and it wasnt long before he was recognized as a key man for that type of business. Once he built the hotel, thats where the activity took off. The hotel had marble floors, beautiful rooms, uptodate service that in 1914 they built it and a lot of famous people stay there. Six president s of united states, francis lindbergh, Amelia Ehrhardt stayed there. It was the place to stay when you were in spokane. When they built the dan thats where they formulated the plan that they took the plans together and after the davenport. You go in the lobby there and it was. [inaudible] the hotel is a key spot to stay if youre ever here. In 1974 they had a world fair. It was the Smallest Community to ever have that. It was a major project of tremendous undertaking that they did and it took city of spokane the worst crime ridden area i knew it because i worked at as a policeman in the whole area they cleaned it up and made a wonderful park out of it and that helps the community quite a bit because of that point on you got a lot of people the world over that came to spokane and saw what it looked like and saw the potential and spokane really blossomed after that. It was a major benefit. I would say that you can learn from spokanes early history for what it is today and its a population of people that want to accomplish things and they want to stay in tune with the modern but i think is a city of beauty in a place where people look behind me, you see that river and the falls . Things are constantly evolving for the better. All in all, we are talking about spokane and its a beautiful place and i would call it washington is kept best secret. Standing in front of the bridge and spoke in washington.
