you've got a country club that is in the augusta. it started about 20 miles to the east of here and then quickly they had the first golf course which sat in back of the hotel which is just across the street at the country club and that of course then transitioned to the late course being the only surviving course and that is the one that we are on today here at country club. it is held in the position of the augusta of natural expedition of 1888 the first augusta national. when folks came to town in the late fall they fell in love with augusta and if they decided this is where they were going to spend their winters. they have not developed the west coast and augusta is where the lines are leading from. and convenient for the folks to get away from the winter weather. they would come to augusta and by the 19 hundreds, they blossomed overnight into the largest winter resort in north america so this was the winter home for president and the captains and the industry. he picked up the entire cabinet while staying at the hotel just down the street so they would stay here during the winter and until that april may p. or co. for seven months from november through may it was a tourism town. as g-golf came golf came to the united states in the late 18 hundreds, it came here with william henry harrison no relation to the president of the united states and william henry harrison introduced augusta to begin of golf and at this time it's the winter capital of north america and had a lot of folks interested in the game of golf. in the 19 hundreds three years after the golf course was put here, the reigning british champion played around with the gulf. he was playing exhibition up and down the coast and they were enthused. if you look at those old pictures you will see that it still two years before bobby jones was born and golf was being accepted here to watch then he went over to the golf club and played exhibition there and seemed to light the fire for the game of golf. and as soon as the gulf expanded here at the country club to delete course, there was of course 20 miles east of the golf club there was a course in the river here we were a city of grand hotels and golf courses that cost the iaf bobby jones. keep in mind he wasn't born until 92 so all this time in the late '90s and early 19 hundreds again is blossoming here in augusta, and it happens to be close enough to atlanta, and this is an area that could maybe support a golf course later on down the line. he starts playing golf and it's 10 degrees warmer than atlanta so all of these factor into the decisions to build a golf course. so they build the augusta national and clocked in 1932 the course is built and he builds the course in record time. 76 working days which is absolutely incredible and they got a lot of farmers to come in from the field and have probably never been had probably never been on a golf course before then and they were charged with building the augusta national and big up 50 cents according to clifford roberts did a 50 cents a day from sunrise to dark to work on the golf course, 50 cents being twice the going rate so he builds the golf course and 76 working days and then in september, august, september bobby jones played his first round of golf. bobby jones had a tough time selling the world on augusta georgia and the golf club and they just didn't have the money. and the base of the winter tourism started to dry up because after they put the course here, florida was developed. so someone filled out a favor towards the crowd and they struggled. the winning formula happened to come in the 1950s in the form of almost what you would call it a trifecta. president eisenhower was a member of the augusta national and became became president of the united states in this big spotlight shone on the city of augusta and a a president of the united states was playing a lot of golf at the augusta national and television came of age and when the people at they started watching the president play golf in augusta georgia and they could see on the news at night. as tim would have it arnold palmer came along. he would hitch up his pants and when golf torments. he was a good-looking i am between eisenhower as president and coming to augusta in the 1950s he blossomed. in 1960 and 1962 and 1964. then they have come the you have come the air of jack nicholas and the fan base nationwide and worldwide just began to grow with the type of situation. i spent my entire career here and during my stay at the moment in the history of the golf course. i covered the masters for the first time and then the following year. i ended up in my career and after i got out of the tv business. it's how augusta came to be because when i came here, folks asked me first on the course how did this town become the golf capital of the world. with private collectors i pieced together a story that had up to that
