Joining us is julian routh, covering the campaign for the u. S. Postgazette. Lets start with the Supreme Court decision. What did they decide about ballots in pennsylvania . Julian the Supreme Court actually shut down what republicans were trying, which is to strike on the three day extension for mail in about. They failed once, and they failed again last night. Left the door open to potentially reexamine this case. The time to be, it is most likely after the election. In preparation, the pennsylvania secretary of state said that they are going to advise county to segregate all of those counties, which is at the center of this. It is kind of precautionary, but at the same time, it is probably smart, and i talked to legal experts yesterday, he said that these ballots should be segregated. There could be legal challenges after this as well. The Supreme Court decision last night was remarkable, and the way that Justice Alito said that he believes there is a high likelihood that this deadline extension was unconstitutional. That they did not have the time to rule before the election. Greta Justice Amy Coney barrett did not participate in this decision in pennsylvania and north carolina. Lets back up. What were republicans trying to do by bringing this before the Supreme Court with days to go, in both incidents . Julian republicans were sort of bringing the Trump Campaign wishlist to several different courts around pennsylvania. This effort had failed originally, so what they did was ask the Supreme Court to take this issue of and basically strike down the state Supreme Court ruling which extended this deadline originally. That split was fourfour, before Amy Coney Barrett was confirmed. After that split, the republicans went back to the Supreme Court again and asked the Supreme Court to expedite this matter. It is sort of a different way of looking at it. That is what republicans last night were for, and the they that they could not do this quickly. The election is only six days away. Greta what about be protesting that we are seeing in philadelphia over Walter Williams junior shooting. What could this impact have on voting . Julian the impact on voting is interesting. Im not exactly sure of the impact on the electorate at this point. Other than us knowing that law and order is the second Biggest Issue in one reputable hole recently. Poll that poll said that joe biden is more trustworthy on law and order. I would say during the primary election, there were protests. These were not as ardent or inflammatory, these are more intense. I think that there is fear among county Election Officials that this could disrupt the administration of the election, which is already so much threatened obviously by the influx of mailin ballots and so many other things. I think that it is still to be determined. We are on the western side of the state. I think that it is something to Pay Attention to. Greta what is the state of early voting in pennsylvania, and how will it work on Election Night . Julian early voting had come to an end this past tuesday, because that was the deadline in pennsylvania to apply for a mail in ballot. Pennsylvania was letting you go to your county election offices and do an all in one stop, apply, thought your balance, and return it again. End. Came to an there was amazing turnout for that. Mailin ballots themselves being dropped off, there been more than 1. 8 million returned. 3 million had applied. On Election Night, it comes to how many counties will precount those ballots that day or how many will wait to the following morning. The secretary of state here says that it could be a matter of days before we get reputable results or an overwhelming majority of results. There are a lot of questions to answer there. Greta if you look at what happened in 2016, president out a victory in pennsylvania. Trump, president beat the former 44392ary of state by votes. What is it looking like right now . Julian in my expert opinion, no m in my expert opinion, but i am no expert on polling at this point. Who knows what we could see. Hillary clinton lead in the polls before the election in 2016. It is certainly tightening, and it is tightening in a way that i do not think donald trump will win by that many votes. I think it will be closer. Biden certainly has the edge and in polling, i would give it mostly to the democrat strategy. Democrats were extremely disappointed that Hillary Clinton had not visited counties outside of the two urban areas in pennsylvania. Joe biden, though he has not been able to campaign traditionally, has definitely put more resources on the ground in some of those rural areas, some of those smaller counties. I think that, without strategy, if it pays off, we could see an extremely close election, and joe biden is probably leading right now. Again, democrats are very concerned of the secret trump vote. The has even shown up and in polling here. Greta in what way . Julian there was a reputable poll done ahead poll democrats and over 50 had said the they that they had either known or assumed that people who they had known were voting for trump but not telling them. They were worried on election day, people who they know in their own lives, who may have been hesitant to talk about their support for trump, they think are going to go vote for him. Greta where do each of these candidates have their stronghold in the state of pennsylvania when you look at a map . Julian if you look at a map, this is the state of political moderation. There are two geographically very dark blue areas, philadelphia on the east and pittsburgh on the west. The smaller counties, have been traditionally blue are now more purple because of trumps ability to connect with those people in 2016. The rest of the state is pretty red. There are pockets here and there like erie county, where traditionally blue workingclass have been democrats. It is an interesting state geographically because most candidates can make their appeals to each one of those sets of those voters besides maybe trump in philadelphia. In terms of the rural, red and the counties that are purple, joe biden has been able to go in there and try to say, donald trump has said that he would remember you. And he forgot. I am the one who will actually will remember you. That is sort of the geographical makeup. It is an extremely interesting state for 20 electoral votes. Greta here are the lines for our viewers this morning. If you are supporting the trumppentz ticket if you support others and your undecided, heres that number. We have a fourth line for pennsylvania voters. We want to hear from residents. Now, julian routh, on Election Night, where will there be early signs that one candidate is heading toward a victory in pennsylvania . Julian in pennsylvania, counties are not allowed to tally the mailin ballots until 8 00 p. M. That day. They are not allowed to open , getting, canvassing them ready until 7 00 a. M. On election day. Those talks on the legislator stalled. The republicans wanted to morph things with residency requirements. The governor was not willing to sign. It was a back and forth blame game. Because of that, you are not going to see an incredible amount of mailin ballots being tallied right away. There could be a decent amount by maybe 1 00 a. M. In the morning. I think that when the polls closed and you start to see the in person voting come in, and democrats are expecting donald trump to have a lead and that. Depending on whether or not he calls a victory, that is a whole different story. Again, the secretary of state here says might not have overall majority results that night because of this 7 00 a. M. Wait time until you have two campus ballots so it could take a couple of days to get overwhelming results in. The turn outas like in the philadelphia area in 2016 . Julian the turnout in philadelphia and pittsburgh was really great for the most part. It was more so the suburbs around Allegheny County and suburbs around philadelphia you sought biggest turnout increases at the time. I think a lot of democrats who. Rew up in this area a turnout is no worry for democrats in philadelphia and pittsburgh. ,robably will not be this time and for mailin voting, it will probably be a lot better this time. Greta john, supporting the president. You are a first. Say if well, i will just you want lower taxes, less ,egulations, more Public Safety if you support the Second Amendment, you would vote for President Trump. It is common sense. If you support street criminals and rioting and looting and savagery within all of the big cities, you will vote for biden and kamala harris. It is as simple as that. With regards to pennsylvania, a verylphia they have strong reputation for corruption. I go there a lot for business trips. It. E it, here it hear there is massive Democrat Party corruption taking place in philadelphia and nobody is allowed to address it, challenge it or address it or eliminated. You reported, have on this . Julian president as said that. He hasnt been willing to talk about that. On the debate stage, the first time he had said the quote bad things happen in philadelphia. This is something republicans have been saying for a while. I am based in pittsburgh so i cannot report on the inner workings of the city. When trump said bad things happen in philadelphia he was referring to poll watchers, which were denied entry into satellite offices. Satellite election offices are not like traditional polling places where poll watchers are about. President trump saying poll watchers are not allowed in philadelphia is false. Poll watchers are allowed. They have to be certified by their boards of election. They are allowed, but some of these warnings are misguided but i have not done too much reporting in the city proper to know the working of the credit policy. Watching. N, terry is watching have been what is happening in pittsburgh and philadelphia and one of the things that disturbs me is when you watch what is happening in big cities, i do not understand why philadelphia and pittsburgh did not bring in National Guard and Law Enforcement in the first place. It is interesting to find out who is responsible for telling Police Officers to stand drown down and not draw their weapons. To me it is ridiculous. People are dying. Businesses are being destroyed. Onthe city is sitting back their hands allowing it to happen because their complacency is guilt. Greta julian, you talked about a pole. You mentioned this briefly at voters aboutasked who they trust more on Law Enforcement. What pole was this . Julian i think this might have been the mullen purple ormonde mouth but it had surveyed voters with their most important issue was and law and order came up and was the second highest behind health care or covid19 and then the survey asked the participants what registered voters judge who they trust more on law and order and joe biden for the first time add one that won that. In pittsburgh, the democratic mayor had been criticized during the protests earlier this year mucheploying police too for the Police Response in general by directives in the city who thought it was too intense. I think that goes against the fact that people are saying the democratic mayors have not stood by police. The one here has and has been criticized for. Greta howard, philadelphia. Caller good morning. Greta supporting the president. Go ahead. Caller i live in northeast philadelphia and people need to recognize that there is major inport for President Trump northeast photo via, southeast philadelphia and other pockets of the city. It is not getting reported. It is not being recognized by any of the media. We are out there every weekend having rallies in northeast philadelphia for President Trump. Know that should pennsylvania is a numbers game. Pennsylvania in 2016 by 105,000 in philadelphia, so a 460,000 voteh lead and yet there is corruption in philadelphia but i am telling you now President Trump will have major support in the city. It is not just the downtown areas. Not just certain sections. Northeast philadelphia is the largest voting bloc in the city and everyone will come out and support President Trump. Somebody needs to Start Talking about Hunter Bidens laptop. It is absolutely ridiculous that this is getting zero media attention. Msnbc and alln, they want to do is talk about covid. Hunter bidens laptop is real. There is tons of corruption on there and cspan needs to start reporting on it. Julian, in his comments about northeast philadelphia, southeast philadelphia and support for the president. Julian i do not think the color is wrong at all and i think we are seeing the same thing in western pennsylvania, which is the media at large will say that pennsylvania is going to sweep joe biden into the white house in this big wave against donald trump, but i think donald Trump Supporters have been extremely visible in the suburbs, especially in Allegheny County and up north from here in erie county. I have done reporting it. Support isp invisible. Joe biden supporters and biden supporters itself have cited covid19 mitigation and cautioned the reason they are not visibly showing their support at a rallying and having big crowds. While i do agree donald trump does have that support, it might be more than everybody thinks. Joe biden may be as not gotten the chance to prove how much support he has. Credit ohio, justin, supporting the president. Inler i am just calling because the guest you have is talking about joe biden making a purple, unione labor towns and whatnot. Ohio, rightlumbia, on the western border of pennsylvania. I am a working class man. I see that i believe that biden as gotten pushed more into s support istrump closing in on him a little bit. A very good story we get around the i like to call it inauthenticity of joe biden is retirees we hear a lot about in the youngstown area and it is a mr. Good example on how biden really could not care less. Need something from constituents or the voters. It really breaks my heart, everything about the times we see america come together, usually in the face of tragedy. But everything is so divisive, and i see a bigger divide in the Democratic Party than i do with anything else. It is almost like they are running under a banner of unity against everything they hate. They are running on a platform of hatred and disguise dignity. Helen, las vegas, supporting the former Vice President. Caller hi, i just want to mention the things that are being said by trump are not true because i followed him four years plus. Trump never, ever thought would continue repeating about joe hend sleepy mentioned. He was going to be out of the white house. Thingsre going to do because of the things he did wrong. They talked about it. That is all they ever did because of his taxes, because of everything else. He lives in a house, a getaway house, it never pays taxes on it. We do. He has toates that use his own money to run campaigns. Credit ok, alan, we have heard from two colors who say they do not like the other guy. What are the likability factors in terms of pennsylvania. Julian coat the likability factor, it is a little starker than it was in 2016. They called joe biden pennsylvanias third center. Donald trump is not wellliked around here. That is polls under sampling the people they need to sample. At the same time, this is a state where likability does matter. I mentioned before this is a moderationpolitical and people here elect congress members, senators who are above the fray politically. Pat toomey is the perfect example. Cut to been a guy that went to the senate and not called out President Trump but also not exactly supported him wholeheartedly, embraced him on some of these positions. That is a perfect example of the type of legislator that pennsylvania likes. That will be a huge determining factor in hue who wins this election. Greta jeff, agnes. Here . Next year supporting biden. Go ahead. Caller i know they produce a lot of oil and gas. And joe biden talking about doing away with fracking. Fracking is safe. Greta lets talk about this issue of fracking. How is it playing out in pennsylvania . Julian that is such a great question. Republicans and donald trump, that is a huge selling point. They havent been holding camping calls in pennsylvania very frequently to tear apart joe Bidens Energy position and Energy American dependence because pennsylvania is the second largest Gas Producing state. Republicans and donald trump have exaggerated some points of the impact of a fracking band ban for example. Donald trump recently said there are 600,000 fracking jobs. In fracking, there are actually 30,000 to 50,000 jobs. We can talk about gun Treatment Plants and the number could definitely grow there. It is a bit misleading. At the same time, joe biden as had to verify kiss position so many times on this and was not clear with voters for months on this issue and trump had been playing that video compilation of biden talking about this at his recent rallies. Important issue in pennsylvania. Not sure how important it is to the regular voter who is not in that industry. It is something trump has focused on. Greta we are talking about the battleground state of pennsylvania, at keystone state. 20
