was a little aggravating to watch. i'm glad joe biden answered. the questions he was asked. still didn't get a lot of the answers i was looking for. but overall, it was a mess. it was a mess. >> what is a question you would have asked, samantha, or you wanted an answer to? well, the question donald trump didn't answer that i wanted answered was about the greenhouse -- climate change. he didn't really go in depth about climate change like i thought he should have, so i really wish he would have answered the entire question. >> thanks for calling in this evening. support on our president trump line from joplin, missouri. caller: hi. >> your reaction to the debate tonight? but i: i'm for trump, wish trump would have been more calm about things. >> all right. let's move on and hear from christopher in jefferson, texas. christopher, please give us your assessment of tonight's debate. caller: the only thing i want to a president is supposed to be president of the people. when you look at donald trump, his background, when you look at mr. joe biden, joe biden is a you can trust to be the person next door to you or someone you can believe in working with you if he was someone over your company. can't lead with someone who is always hotheaded. now the people who voted for him are in an uproar. they don't know what to say saidse this is what people they wanted america to be and that is not what america is. the president who is the president is a president of the people, and that is who we put in to run this great america. fords, new jersey on our support president trump line. what did you think about tonight? caller: honestly, it did not shock me. personally, from the minute come stepped into office -- president trump stepped into office, he was ridiculed no matter what he would have done, whether it was good or bad, and i personally think he's got so much, probably anger and animosity of everything that has gone on the whole time he's been a president, with everything going on with scamming him and trying to get him impeach and everything else -- the guy has been through, the way i look at it, more than somebody else would have probably put up with, but tonight, i can't say i was overjoyed with what went on with either one of them. allit didn't shock me at because both of them, i think, without there with an attitude where they can't stand each other from what it looks like and it all came out on tv. >> why do you support president trump? caller: why? >> yes ma'am. i've worked for the federal government 32 years and i've seen a lot in those 32 years. i don't think this country was in great shape when he took office. theink as far as immigration part, there are too many people coming into this country as far as -- i'm not going to say i'm prejudiced against people coming into this country. but i think wrong, there are people illegally here that shouldn't be because of crime and different things going stop to a did put a lot of people coming into the country which a lot of people felt was wrong, but i think it is getting overrun. i mean, when you look at the welfare rolls, people on assistance that come here and, i mean, it is only a matter of time before there is no money for social security and every thing else because of the way it is going. some things i do agree with him on. some things i'm on the fence about. the border wall, i mean, that was a big issue. i think something had to be done, whether that was a good or bad idea. i'm not really going to say is supposedlyt he bringing back a lot of things from china, as far as a living going to china and these other countries, and as far as prescriptions, if you are on any kind of medication which are expensive, a lot of people can't afford it. personally, myself, i have a son who has a lot of medical problems. i called about trying to get him on obamacare and all these plans. you can't afford it. there's no way. he's on a plane from the state -- not medicaid, but it is called the marketplace where they go by your income. if you don't have any income, i guess you go on medicaid, but i don't know that much about obamacare shall i can't really some ofout that, but the things trump has done as far as i can see are good. >> thanks for sharing some of your views with us. austin, texas on our support president biden line. hello. i would like to say i think biden did very well considering the circumstances and how much trump interrupted him. and i am disappointed trump is andggressive and so angry, it is an embarrassment for america. this is what the world series for our leader. sees our leader. greta: the next debate will be the vice presidential debate october 7 and the university of utah will be hosting that. reported recently pete buttigieg is playing mike pence in debate prep with senator harris. today thatote in usa nineext debate will have 10 minute segments. this will be the only debate between mike pence and his challenger senator harris. the moderator will ask opening questions and candidates will have two minutes to respond to questions in each segment. know, that, as many of you steve spans steve scully will be moderating the next debate. moderating thes next debate and the only correct format is to have c-span callers ask the questions with no time limits on them." dominic in olympia, washington on our support president trump line? what is your reaction to tonight's debate, dominic? caller: i feel like it could have been a lot more organized. the host of the show, i really feel like wasn't doing his job very well making sure both of these opponents got their voice heard. it was a lot of talking over each other, and it was a lot -- it was hard for me to understand with what each candidate was offering to the country. even though i already know that trunk is here -- trump is here to support the preservation of the american way and how i was born, raised. --anted to hear what biden more of what biden had to say or what he had to offer. host: dominic, a lot of people probably were talking at their tv's during the debate and grousing. how would you have moderated it? caller: how would i have done what? host: how would you have moderated debate if you were chris wallace sitting in that chair? caller: well, i'm not a moderator so, you know, but that's not my skill, so i can't answer the question. right, thank you, sir. richard, atwater, california. support joe biden line. what did you think of tonight? ,aller: it is obvious trump againstpletely biased everyone against that -- except himself. i can't imagine. and never voted in my life i'm 52. i'm going to vote against him today. i'll not -- kandi in lakeside, california on our support president trump line. kim, did you learn anything tonight? >> debates are always challenging and being a moderator is not something i would like to do between those guys. i've lived in san diego, lived in the military, 68 years old, i've never claimed anything. filipino and always felt if i didn't earn it on my own merits whether i'm a veteran or my education i didn't deserve it. living in san diego, you see an influx of people all the time. i'm behind president trump 100%. he's a transparent president. get his tweets, but i follow them. i think biden needs to get a backbone if he's going to do anything and i don't think it stepped up to it -- he stepped up today. it is hard to debate with two of these guys. i like the fact trump takes charge and the other thing is when they are reaching in my pocket for my taxes, that pisses me off more than anything and before covid, my 401(k) was kicking ass and i was looking forward to having that thing go up until i retired but now i am trying to get back to where it used to be. -- serve inmp office and get our country back in line so my 401(k) continues to grow. host: what is it like to be a trump supporter in california? caller: [laughs] this used to be a red state. i voted for governor wilson, schwarzenegger. you are surrounded by liberals and i can't stand it. i don't know what happened to california, the white it shifted the way it is and i am a pro-gun on top of that. i joined the military, wasn't interested in july got in the military. it is tough living here surrounded by people you work with who are all liberals and at the same time trying to be conservative and support the guy. host: next call is vanessa, also on the west coast in washington. did i say the name of your city correctly? caller: you got close? host: you are calling on the undecided line. are you truly undecided and did the debate influence you at all tonight? caller: you know, i am a bit undecided. i am a person who believes in people who are going to help this country. it doesn't matter if you are a republican, democrat, or liberal. tonight, ie debates think for me, i wanted to hear the people answer -- our next president to answer the question and it was really hard for me because of trump continuously interrupting and i felt like he kind of bullied his way through the debate. it was extremely disappointing each candidate was asked questions, to be transparent and answer the question. sometimes, they got a little lost. maybe it was because of the interrupting. i feel like the moderator pretty tonight, but that was the disappointing part of it. i just feel like when we watch the second or third debate, maybe they can address the questions better and less interruptions. host: thanks for calling in, vanessa. greta brawner? greta: from our text we are getting from viewers tonight. ihere is one from jared. that was embarrassing. neither gave plans for the future. i think biden came out on top because he spoke to the american people directly and showed how trump's policies have failed so far while giving examples of what he did as vice president. woman in denver, if a acted and said the things trump said in this debate, his supporters would drag her with sexist remarks and not take her seriously as a candidate. mary from buffalo, it was sad to see the president had to debate biden and the moderator. chris wallace patterned candy crawley when she hosted in previous years. richie from beaumont, president trump was unprepared for the debate. biden won hands down. ne, biden distanced himself from the green new deal. never expected that. host: emily, texas on our support joe biden line. what did you think? caller: i think this debate was so disappointing, but the way the moderator composed himself, i don't know how he had the patience to deal with donald trump. trump as ad president, i feel he didn't get a good example for the country the way he kept interrupting vice president joe biden. i feel like joe biden really won against donald trump. something that donald trump didn't really address was the way that when he was asked about condemning white supremacists, he didn't say anything. he really just ignore the question and continued talking. he didn't answer the question. he really just misled us all and i feel so disappointed by what he was stating. host: emily, were you old enough to vote four years ago and if so, who did you vote for? >> no, i wasn't. i just turned 18 in this year and i am so excited to be able to vote. i've been telling my friends and family to register. i've helped my grandma register to vote, my father, and my mom. host: are you still in high school this year? emily? we must have lost her. sorry about that. robert in chula vista, california on our support president trump line. caller: hi. i think trump got this all the way. point about joe biden. all those, you know. host: robert, we are having a little trouble. a reminder to viewers, turn down the volume on your tv and if you are on your speakerphone on your mobile phone, take it off speaker, it makes for a cleaner sound. judith, georgia on our support joe biden line. caller: hip. -- hi. i wish someone had asked trump if it is true that melania would not move into the white house until all the toilets were exchanged, and i have a second question. , interestinguse declaring war? the leader of north korea or what? those are my two questions. host: that is judith in georgia. catherine is next in eureka, california and she is on our support president trump line. caller: hi. host: how was tonight's debate for you? caller: i support president trump 100%. i think biden has had a lot of years to do what he says he's going to do >> he has been completely the opposite in his policies the previous years so i do not trust him. i do not like him. i host: am all for trump. host:-- i am all for trump. host: what are some of the issues of concern for you? caller: my freedoms as an american. i'm about my gun rights. tobout being able to choose vaccinate my children or not. i believe is trump -- i believe that trump's for freedom. have you been affected by the wildfires? caller: very much and i work in the cannabis industry. not only because of that, but in california. obviously, the majority of that is burning. friends, neighbors, people i know, their homes are burning. they are maybe 30 miles from the fires. policeof defunding the , andhings, we need order we don't need people robbing houses and destroying businesses . there are business owners who have lost a lot in california that are -- have always -- they need to be protected. host: how big is the cannabis industry in northern california? caller: it has brought a lot of really amazing jobs and stability to a lot of people. host: thanks for calling in. robert in san jose, california, on our undecided line. robert, are you truly undecided? if so, did tonight's debate affect your viewpoint? undecided., i am to answer your question from the previous caller, it's a $20 billion industry, the cannabis industry in california. i am undecided and i wish i had another choice of person to vote for because i don't really think that either one of these guys are really interested in helping i thinkon people, and that there is a lot of suffering that's going on, especially right now with covid-19, and people are losing their jobs, and businesses are closing, and a lot of things are happening, especially here in california where we do have fires and we are experiencing a lot more people becoming on housed as a result of that. of people being on housed now is growing at a tremendous rate, and this would be the loss of business and people coming out of not being able to pay rent, it is expected that they will be right here in our county, which is currently about 10,000 people on housed. there is projected to be between 40,000 to 50,000 people living in the streets. host: in your view, what is the solution to that housing issue? think we have to somehow work out a deal where the banks help bailout people because we bailed out the banks back in 2008, and there was a lot of profit that was made from that time and i think it is about time that the banks take a hit on some of this stuff. there's a lot of landlords out there that are not able to make mortgage payments. host: you called in on the undecided line. what is it that you like about joe biden, and what is it that you like about president trump? since you said it that way, i will answer with joe biden, i think he is trying to look at it more from how we can unify the country, and i think that is something that is essential if we expect to get out of this problem that we are having. multiple problems. we have to become much more united. that is one thing i do appreciate about him. one of the things i appreciate about trump is that he is looking at trying to rebuild the economy, and you know, unfortunately, i believe that we need to keep people healthy and safe, and when you do not wear a mask and don't encourage people to wear a mask, that is counterproductive to trying to bring back to the economy. if more people become infected, we are less likely to get back on track. host: robert, thanks for your time this evening. we appreciate it. let's hear from annette in twin lakes, michigan, on our support joe biden line. how was the debate for you tonight? caller: i was not real happy with the debate. sitting there and watching president trump with all the anger in his face and just lashing out instead of letting biden speak. in.ould only get so much people, biden reached this is a us know -- military and shows a lot of respect. hand, we the other have seen about him talking about women in a very derogatory manner. he is also derogatory towards african-americans. that kind of stuff needs to stop. we need to be united as a nation no matter what color we are. we all need to be treated equal. these are serious things that need to be handled. care, not trying to cut everything down, and the other thing is even trump's own he cheatede on how on his exams and paid people to do his exams. every time you see trump's mouth open, that's when he's lying. had a fair amount of criticism of the debates format tonight from our viewers. jeremy peters of the new york times tweets out the debate commission is an old institution, resistant to change and highly susceptible to pressure from the campaign. with its legitimacy on the line, it reminds me of the iowa caucuses. will it adapt? reporters tweeting out their observances of the debate. jonathan martin of the new york times, recall our pulling of the weekend. even republicans support mandatory masking if you cannot distance. yet the president mocked his own advisor, county, on the matter, totally disconnected from where voters are on this. for swing how it play voters, but biden telling trump to shut up is verbatim what a lot of iowa and new hampshire s told me theyem wanted clinton to do. she lost the election but she did win the first debate. she was staggering and got a boost in the polls after the debate. also, tonight, stephen dennis notes that cnn's instant poll of the first debate of who won in 2000 showed al gore winning 48% to george w. bush, 41%. george w. bush went on to win that election. host: next up is tyler and klamath falls, oregon. did you watch all of the debate and what did you think about it? halfwayi turned it on through the debate so i missed the beginning of it. don't think they covered a whole lot in the debate. i'm going to vote for tom because i believe he has accomplished more than any other president has in the last four years he has been president. will this be the first year you ever vote in a presidential election? caller: it is not, no. i voted for trump in the first election. bit about us a little yourself in klamath falls. i support the second amendment. i love my guns. i love my hunting. i support the right to bear arms. right now, we are trying to buy all this covid stuff. everybody is right now. think the virus has gone way too far. host: how far are you from portland, tyler? caller: 4.5 hours away. host: you have not been affected by what is going on. caller: we have not had riots going on here. for spending a few minutes with us. on our support joe biden line. caller: hello. i am in louisville, kentucky. i am seeing a lot of what is going on with breonna taylor and everything. and honestly, trump has not handled this at all. this is my home. i see what is going on. downtown has shut down completely. the man honestly is a racist and i do not like racists and that is why i'm going with biden, because he understands, and he is for the people. he is not for himself like trump. trump literally has kids locked in cages on the border, and i just want to see biden really, like, reimagine the police. i'm tired of people being hurt, people of color, of any religion, because the thing is, america was built on separation of church and state and trump is all about his religion. he is biased with religion. that is why i am voting for biden because i am sick and tired of people of color being discriminated against. host: were you a biden supporter during the primaries? caller: yes. he was as he said running, i was very happy, because right now, i want anyone but trump. host: how has covid affected you in louisville? caller: it has hit pretty hard. recently, her father passed away from covid and i have had my grandfather -- he currently has covid. it has been really hard because a lot of people that i know are high-risk and nothing is really being done about it. he shut itame in, down, and it's been honestly pretty ok since then, but it has been hard. there's still people who will not wear masks, and you have to basically force them to wear a mask or tell them to leave, and a lot of people have lost their jobs over it. me included. i lost my job and i had to find a new job and a lot of people i know have lost their jobs over it. host: what kind of work do you do? caller: i was a server for four years and i lost my job, and now, i am in a furniture business, selling furniture. host: thanks for spending a few minutes with us tonight. michael kent, washington, another undecided caller. there's not many of you out there. are you truly undecided, and what did the debate due to your viewpoint tonight? -- do to your viewpoint tonight? caller: i started out being a trump supporter. after watching the debate, i sort of leaned towards undecided. the thing that did it for me was when trump started to attack voting and how mail-in voting is not really reliable. i cringed a little thinking that, you know, maybe he is going to undermine, you know, american confidence in voting, and i think that is sort of dangerous in some ways. i think joe biden himself did not really tackle the issue so i'm knocking to be on his side or trump prophesied yet. i'm going to wait a couple more debates and i think the vice presidential debate might actually tell us a lot about which side to lean towards. host: that vice presidential debate is coming up next week on october seventh and that will be at the university of utah in lake city. the next two presidential debates are october 15 in miami and october 22 at delmont university in nashville. michigan, onrbor, our support president trump line. what is it like to be a time supporter in ann arbor, michigan? a time supporter in michigan is basically popular. everyone i have talked to so far in my area is all trump. i voted for trump in the first onceion and i believe somebody has office, like joe biden, he was already vice president. i like joe biden's certain views. joe biden was there. he had his chance, and i think there should be new blood. it's another reason why for trump. also, you can ask me anything. i am educated. i studied a lot of things. birth burke marks -- marks my wrist. -- i'mo a priest of concerned about religious freedom and also about my rights as a citizen about what i can believe. host: i have one question for you. the people you have talked to, is president trump going to repeat and win michigan again? caller: i believe he is come yes. host: that is daniel in ann arbor. sheldon is up next, in anchorage, alaska, on our support joe biden line. hello. how is the debate for you tonight? caller: it was a pretty bumpy, rough ride. i have to be honest with you. all the bickering and arguing and trump emad and then joe biden allowed himself to get mad. he should have been more at ease. host: why do you support joe biden? caller: i support joe biden because, first of all, when he got in office with barack obama, joe biden cannot be a racist as trump tried to claim. the first african-american called him up front and center and he stepped up to the plate. he helped obama to bailout america twice with the car industry, and lo and behold, a lot of people, when ebola came. when other diseases came, joe biden was in control of that and he helped nip it in the bud. so it will not spread around the world, so i am confident mr. joe notn, he got experience, that he has been there long, but he got experience from the kennedy days and martin luther king days, so this man cannot be a racist, marching with dr. king , and then senator john lewis, but i will like to say he will virus and control the get people back to working again , get the economy back on its feet again. you cannot have the virus popping up down in florida and in utah and all over the united states. pandemic likethe in anchorage, alaska? caller: i work on the pipeline. there is a pipeline up here and it makes billions of dollars each and every year. when i go up there to work on the pipeline, we had a head cook. that back in february, that there was some virus. they did not tell us it was the coronavirus. they said just that there was some virus. now we know it was indeed the coronavirus. a man got sick on the pipeline. you, it could get 50 below degrees, you just cannot fly the airplane in and out to transport somebody who is sick. by the time this young man got back to anchorage, he died of the virus. that was the beginning of our problems. it started picking up more and more in march and there was a lot of people coming off the pipeline. way out in the middle of nowhere , come off the pipeline, and then they were quarantined downtown in anchorage, alaska. it was all on the news. i made it home. it started picking up. more and more. host: since march, you have not been back up north on the pipeline? caller: no, sir. and i talked to some of the pipeline boxes, and they said, and i quote, that we do not think that we are going to be able to get another contract up there. i asked them the reason why because it affects me and a lot of other workers. table thisn the thing that is trump and lisa murkowski. if they pass this prop, we will not be able to get the jobs anymore appear because this is what trump wants. that's a lot of jobs that's on the line. host: sheldon in anchorage, alaska. thank you for your time this evening. let's go back to greta. >> a bumpy ride, tonight's debate. the denver post tweets out it started out civil enough with president donald trump going to his left turn and joe biden not into his opponent and offering, how you doing, man. somebody might be wondering, why didn't they shake hands? it's part of the negotiation. both camps hammered out final details. no mask. first question went to the president and there was a limited audience. negotiationsted were described as amicable. both sides agreed it would not make sense to do the traditional handshake. an elbow bump was seen as awkward. you might have noticed the change from previous debates. there was no spin room, and that was due to covid. another observation about the debates, from npr, chris wallace, 72, was the youngest man on the stage. host: tori is in oregon on our support president trump line. you supporting president trump, and what did you think of the debate tonight? caller: the debate, i had a tough time with that. i feel with all the scrutiny president trump has been under for his last three years, almost four years, i feel his anger as well. anybody can be in the right mind exactly to debate anything when it has all been negative towards him. he is a constitution guy. he is about the constitution, and most of us in oregon, most people think we are a completely blue state. it, we have of portland and eugene, oregon, that's blue, and the rest of the state is red. and we are under a democratic governor, and that is not helping us here in oregon at all. voterjoe is an undecided in valley village, california. why are you undecided and what did he think of the debate tonight? >> i thought the debate was quite good. i think trump came off as a bully, as he always does. i think joe biden came off as a gentleman. i am actually from delaware originally. my family knows joe biden. my uncle was a state senator when joe biden was a congressional senator. host: you told me you were on the undecided line. are you really undecided? caller: he was a very good man. host: you have to call in on the undecided line. we want to hear from you, just be undecided. linda in wisconsin on our support joe biden line. caller: hi. host: what did you think of the debate tonight? caller: i was provided. i mean, i voted for donald trump in 2016, and i feel the anger of our country, but i am so sorry i andd for him because biden obama, they have done everything for us, and that brought to my eyes my daughter. he is able to vote this year. her whole class does a debate, and she comes home and she told me about their debate, how they fought. i was doing that in my own head as well. 2016, voted for trump in i knew it was a mistake the minute i put it in. i just knew. know, he did not even give biden a chance to talk. because he is a bully. and that is how i feel. host: thanks for calling in. thomas in farmington, new mexico. it is your turn on our support president trump line. how did the debate go for you tonight? caller: kind of wild. [laughter] i did not expect such an argumentative discussion between the two of them. is then reason i called elections -- it kind of blows me away that they discuss weeks or ,ays after the election counting ballots and whatnot. --rybody knows election date so i kinda feel like anything that comes in after election date should be thrown out. i kind of don't understand our system. host: velma in mississippi on our support joe biden line. it is your turn. how is the debate for you tonight? caller: it was not good for me at all. my main reason is that i think debate, that the micr person's mind -- should be turned off so we could hear what they are saying. trump interrupted him where he could not speak. like the other callers have said, biden was a very -- he was a gentleman for that. i think y'all should find a way whilen the mics off the other person is speaking so we can hear what both of them were trying to say. host: all right. thank you. just to make it clear, c-span does not control those mics. so let's check in one more time with greta. >> some viewers sending us some text. a trump supporter says donald needs to water down his anger and draw biden out where he is being evasive. annoyed by this battle tonight. terry from wyoming said i support anyone who will get trump out of office so we don't have to listen to his ranting and raving and then changing what is said to benefit him at the moment. he always says or does something and then the next minute, he denies it. another says biden provoked trump. he has no real plan. trump should not fall for the trap. it is unbelievable, says tom, in new york, that we were listening to a sitting president. it was very unconvincing. trying to drown out a parent trying to correct him. he had no respect for the office, the moderator, the people, joe biden, or even himself. i wish donald trump could have let joe speak. i am for joe. donald trump could not answer all of the questions. everything is corrupt. the debate itself was pretty terrible. no one could speak. this one from david in greenville, mississippi. i think biden was too mousy and disrespectful to the u.s. president and made himself look childish. host: let's hear from helen in pennsylvania. hi, helen. caller: i do support president trump. i think he is doing a great job with our country. i just really like him. i supported him in 2016. he was first announced he was running, -- i was not even going to consider voting for him, but i did, and i am glad that i did. i'm sorry that the debate turned out the way it did. i knew it was going to be this way. i almost did not watch it, but i did. politically not correct because he is not a politician. i knew what he was going to do. i don't believe that biden is for the people. that is all i have to say. host: in pennsylvania. this is anita in california. union city, california. on our support joe biden line. how was the debate for you? caller: terrible. i felt sorry for chris wallace. i felt sorry for joe biden. donald trump was unhinged. that russia told must be very happy tonight? they advocate for divisiveness. divisiveness and discord. host: finally tonight, let's hear from lenore in flagstaff, arizona, on our undecided line. lenore, why are you undecided, and where do you -- what are the issues that are important to you? caller: i am originally libertarian so i was not on either side of the fence, but as far as the debate goes, chris wallace gave joe biden much more time then he gave trump -- than he gave trump so i felt like the debate was a little bit highest that way. me that they should let the candidates know when their time is almost up. they used to have mites like green, lights like red, and yellow. chris wallace, he should have maybe been a little better as a moderator. giving biden more time to actually speak. i took the time to stop watch it. host: what did you come up with? what are the figures you came up with when it comes to time? caller: when it comes to time, it was pretty close, but there five minuteseast more on the biden side over the whole 1.5 hours. it was really hard to know because everyone was speaking over each other, too. take wallace himself would so much time just to say the question. i don't know if included. i did not follow politics very and i am kind of toward trump after this debate because i feel like he was a little more natural when he spoke. biden creeps me out a few times, he was saying a few things that did not answer the question. >> this is janelle on our support president trump line. how was the debate for you? c
