Transcripts For CSPAN Campaign 2020 Cori Bush Democratic Primary Night Victory Remarks 20240712

Ive got to give honor to god. And to my family, my father who has been my example my entire life. To my father. [applause] and my family, my mom, my sisters, my children, over here, do my whole family, my friends, my niece and nephew, my family. And then my Movement Family. [cheering] [applause] and to my team, oh my goodness. My team. [applause] you got to do better than that for my team. They counted us out. They called me just a protester. I am just an activist. No name, no title, no amount of money. That is all they said i was. They are not saying that today. [applause] we are going to go on. So, i need to thank some organizations and groups that stood by us. Justice democrats. The so live movement. Democratic socialists of america. Matriarchs. And we have some locals. They were with us from the jump. The Movement Family was with us from the jump. And also [indiscernible] [laughter] [applause] [laughter] [cheering] weve got the next Generation Action Network here with us today. We have several groups that stood with us. Our revolution. Let me also thank somebody that stood with me that did not have to. You probably know very well. Ive got to call out senator bernie sanders. [applause] thank you. Let me say, maybe we even crossed it, 800,000. We made a total of over 475,000 phone calls. Almost six years ago to this day, mike brown was murdered. Murdered by the police on the streets of ferguson, missouri. I was maced and beaten by those same Police Officers in those same streets. Six months from now, the first black congresswoman in this history. [applause] i will be Holding Everyone one of them accountable. St. Louis has remained a symbol to the country, and even the world of the pain so many of us have had to endure for far too long. This summer after george floyd, breonna taylor, ahmaud arbery, and so many more were taken from us, millions of people are taking to the streets to join us to say black lives matter. We have been called radicals. Terrorists. We have been dismissed as impossible. An impossible fringe movement, that is what they called us. Now we are multiracial, multi ethnic, multi generational. United in demanding change. Demanding accountability. Demanding our police, our government, our country recognize that black lives do indeed matter. And that these are not just words or symbolic gestures. But with concrete action, we will measure those outcomes. Let me just say it is historic that this year of all years we are sending a black workingclass single mother all the way to the halls of congress. [applause] from ferguson all the way to the halls of congress. [laughter] [applause] today, the people of st. Louis made a decision. From all corners of missouri, our communities have embraced a bold, fearless vision of change that is regular, where regular everyday People Like Us can feel it. Today, the people won. [applause] power to the people. This campaign was never about me and i could never have done this alone. As i said, i acknowledge our team and everybody else. But let me also acknowledge every single volunteer. We have volunteers not only around the st. Louis area and in missouri, all across the country. We have people volunteering from across the world. People really working to make a difference. And make no mistake, this victory has been years in the making. We want to say thank you to all that went on a limb to support this Grassroots Campaign because they believed in us. And we want to say for those who didnt believe in us, we are going to take care of you too. This is a victory. This victory is a victory for all of us. As i represent the people of st. Louis in washington, i will never take for granted the movement that got me here. [applause] let me say that again. I will never take for granted the movement that got me here. We are at a turning point in this country. We face down unprecedented crises, from covid19 to Police Brutality to outofcontrol climate change. We have decided how to move forward. First hasissouris decided the incremental approach is not going to work any longer. We decided that we are not going to wait any longer for change. For change that is not actually coming. We decided that we the people have the answers. We will lead from the front lines. So i say, thank you for standing with me. [applause] thank you for standing with this moment. And if you didnt really understand what happened right here in st. Louis, missouri, and st. Louis kaunas he, in in st. Louis county, in ferguson, if you did not understand, we are about to show you. [applause] and lastly let me say, you are about to change the world. [applause] chanting cori] it is about all of us. It is not about me. If you need to have a conversation, we will have one off to the side. [applause] congressman Willian Lacy Clay took to twitter to congratulate cori bush on her primary victory. He went on to say, this seat belongs to the people of missouris first congressional district, and i respect their decision. It has been my honor and privilege to represent those who supported me and all others. I am forever grateful for the opportunity to serve. Recently joined senator bernie sanders
