Com tensions have been ratcheting up the last few days, with both countries forcing the other to close a key embassy in that other country. Ae wall street journal has story about that this morning that we will bring to you so i want to bring that story to you. The u. S. And china moved rapidly friday to shut down consulates and evict diplomats, unprecedented steps followed by calls on both sides to ease tension. Flareups between the worlds two biggest economies, even amid the move to avoid further acts of immediate excavation escalation. Aging ordered the shutdown of , describingsulate it as a necessary response after washington ordered china to consulate in houston. U. S. Defended the closure, citing unacceptable espionage and intellectual property theft linked to the outpost. As evidenced in his speech, secretary of state pompeo delivered at the Richard Nixon president ial library and museum in california this week. Once again, the speech from u. S. Secretary of state mike pompeo was one of the things we are talking about and we want to bring that speech to you this morning. Here is what mike pompeo said. Pompeo we have to face a hard truth that if we want a free 21st century and not the chinese century of which xi jinping dreams, the old paradigm of blind engagement with china simply wont get it done. We must not continue it. We must not return to it. As President Trump has made clear, we need a strategy that protects the American Economy and our way of life. The free world must triumph over this new tyranny. Jesse p we have another story fromoli we have another story from politico on the white house is thinking. In january, President Trump declared americas relationship with china might be the best it has been in a long time, praising chinese president xi jinping weeks after inking a first step trade deal. July, President Trump has sanctioned chinese officials over internment of muslims, revealed plans to enact visas for some chinese in the United States, restrict chinese journalists, shutter a diplomatic compound in houston, and vowed retaliation for beijings handling of the coronavirus after praising its efforts. As for trump and xi, they havent spoken since march. We want to talk to the reporter who is writing this for politico, meredith mcgraw. Meredith good morning. Jesse it seems the relationship between the white house and chinas top leader seems to be deteriorating here. Is one of the lowest moments weve seen in terms of the United States and chinas relationship, as you outlined earlier. Weve seen that escalate in the past week, particularly with china asking the u. S. To shut down its consulate in chengdu and the u. S. Shuttering the consulate in houston and this also comes on the heels as weve seen the Trump White House really pick up their public rhetoric against china in the past few weeks. Weve seen a flurry of press conferences, opeds, highprofile speeches like the one from secretary of state pompeo, recently overseas trips, bigit has really been this push from the Trump Administration to outline issues, specific issues they have with china and make the case to the American People for some of the retaliatory things we have seen from the Trump Administration recently like tariffs, sanctions, things like that. Tensions have started to boil over between these two of the worlds biggest economic superpowers. Jesse what was the change that happened here . The changed between relationship between the u. S. And china that caused these tensions to ratchet up . President trump had been more thoughtful about his rhetoric earlier this year when they were trying to negotiate a trade deal that was so important to his administration but of course we saw that rhetoric start to change with the coronavirus pandemic. The president in the past few weeks has been frankly furious with china. Over the handling of the coronavirus and weve also seen the chinese have really picked up some of their actions, as well. Whether it is movements in the south china sea, which secretary of state pompeo said was unlawful, and their treatment of and thethnic minorities shanking province, that has been shenzhen province. That has been going on a wild the administration has used this moment to take some retaliatory efforts against them, and the administration when i talked to officials about china and what weve seen in the past few weeks, they said a lot of their actions have been a long time coming, and theyve been months and months in the making, but it is all coming to a head right now. Jesse do we expect any highlevel conversations between United States officials and chinese officials to bring the tensions back down . Meridith at this point, i do not see that happening in the near future, and the president himself has said he has no interest in talking to chinese president xi jinping. We will have to see how things go in the coming weeks but it doesnt seem like right now, we are going to see any of those conversations happening in the immediate future. Jesse is there any political advantage for democrats or republicans right now for relations with china to be ratcheting up into these tensions we see . Meridith oh, definitely. It in polling that china continues to be a top issue for the public, especially in the wake of the coronavirus. Issuehas always been an that people have been concerned about just in terms of the now, chinabs, but has become a Real National security issue for a lot of americans so when they go to fill out their ballot in november, it is certainly going to be one of the things that is andof mind for americans, it continues to be something that the president is going to have to try to win over the American People in terms of how hes handled the coronavirus. Prettyinues to poll thaty on that so showing the administration is going to show some force against china, certainly helps the Trump Administration politically. Jesse are we seeing any hit one way or the other hint one way or the other of how congress is reacting to these increased tensions or is what we are hearing mostly coming from the white house . There are a lot of china hawks in congress and certainly some are close to the president in the white house, senator cotten, senator graham, but there has been bipartisan support for taking action against china, particularly when it comes to their treatment of ethnic minorities in zhang zhang. The president signed a couple of weeks ago. Hong kong autonomy changes the way we deal with hong kong because of encroaching on hong kongs writes and that was billhelmingly bipartisan that the president signed so there is some support from capitol hill. Jesse what is on the president s schedule this week . Meridith the president is going to be making some tricks this week. Monday, tomorrow, we will be seeing him travel to north is going toere he be touring a planned and also, hes expected to make some remarks on vaccines and hes too expected to travel coronavirus hotspot. Hes going to texas, west texas for some fundraisers later this week and i actually asked the press secretary during her news wakerence on friday if, in of the spike in cases weve seen in texas and the president s decision to not hold of the convention in florida over safety concerns because of the anynavirus, if they had plans to change his schedule or travel or anything like that, and she said no. Right now, they are going to stick with what they have and to have health and safety precautions for when the president does travel, but it is interesting to watch him get back out on the road. Week,n new jersey this but we havent seen him hold any rallies, or big political events since oklahoma. Jesse if you had one thing to focus on this week for our viewers, what should they be paying attention to coming out of the white house . Meridith they should definitely be looking at whatever happens in terms of negotiations between the white house and folks on capitol hill, especially as the clock is ticking for these jobless benefits to expire. And thepens on july 31, white house and republican lawmakers have really struggled in their talks in coming to an agreement on some things, and we are going to see those conversations continue this week. Something that impacts millions of americans and a lot of people are waiting to see what they can actually get done. Jesse wed like to thank meridith mcgraw, politicos White House Reporter for getting up with us this morning. We want to know what you think about the escalating tensions between the u. S. Is there going to be a new cold war between china and the United States . Once again, we are opening up our regular lines. Democrats, you call 202748 8000. Republicans, 2027488001. Independents, your line will be 2027488002. Keep in mind, you can always text us at 2027488003. And we are always reading on nd on facebook on facebook. Com cspan. We will start with brian from illinois on the independent line. Good morning. One of the problems in this country is we dont know history and we dont examine political failures. Our handling of our relationship with china has been a horrific mistake. Made a huges error when he gave china wto. Now we are entering another cold war. To build upspending against china is going to be hundreds of billions of dollars. China was supposed to be our friends once we opened up and allowed american industry to move to china but the opposite has occurred. Chemchina is wealthy and are using their wealth to build their military. This is all very predictable, but the fat cats wall street wanted that cheap asian labor, so i think people that have to have products sourced from china should pay a surtax to pay for our military buildup and pay for all the security measures we have to take with the internet and the World Wide Web because of chinese hacking of everything. It is unbelievable what has occurred so that a few people in wall street can get filthy rich. The american working class is thrown under the bus and we are told that is great, that is the way it had to be. No, it was a massive mistake and we need to Start Talking about our political mistakes. Jesse lets go to richard calling from sparta, new jersey on the democratic line. Good morning. Caller good morning. Please give me one minute. Is really notng about trade. It is what has been happening all along. It has been designed to create this president has been creating chaos in the country. This is willful him and dividing the country, making states lose. Doing the thing with china, other things. He is trying to take away Peoples Health care. Everything to create chaos. When the pandemic came along, i he responded with incompetence, but he saw an opportunity to create chaos and he has. Creating chaos. Now hes got a private army which is raised miraculously in a couple of weeks, creating more chaos. Chaos provides opportunity. You can expect a coup in october. It is not a joke. Create as much chaos has possible. Lose thehes going to election so his only opportunity is to create the conditions for a coup and i expect one to happen. Im afraid. Jesse ronald is calling from monroe township, new jersey on the independent line. Caller good morning. If the United States wants to world, its power in the it is going to have to learn how to get along with all kinds of nations and nations with all ands of economic systems, the gerrymandering that has been was 1 . Posedly it was a billiondollar election. The gerrymandering being done is by the Koch Brothers over a 50 year period since the election of barry goldwater, and it is done here in the United States, we have to stop doing what is politically correct and start doing what is morally correct and take care of correcting ourselves and not trying to correct the whole world all the time. From lets go to Brendan Brenda from houston, texas on the democratic line. Caller thanks for taking my call. Wow, that wouldnt be very wise for america to get into some with imtion sorry, ive lost my thought. China, my point is manufacturs our masks, war missiles, and because of the ungodly greed of Corporate America and the republicans. Theyve really gotten us into a real pickle and the man in the white house is the problem. He is the problem. Is causing the downfall of america. Thanks for taking my call. Jesse lets see what the reaction has been in china to this rising tension between the United States and the backcountry. Lets go to jonathan cheng, the wall street journals china bureau chief who will join us from beijing, china. Jonathan, good morning. Jonathan thanks for having me. Jesse what has the reaction in china to the closing of the u. S. China consulate in houston, texas . Was a big surprise to people in china and in america, as well. I dont think anyone had foreseen that outcome even though we know u. S. China ties have been getting worse by the day. Many people have said it is the worst moment now since 1979 when and the u. S. Reestablished diplomatic ties. But a lot about that, of people in china were pretty stunned by how quickly things have happened. Beijing has shut the u. S. Consulate in the southwestern city of chengdu. There has been quite a scene outside that consulate as the and look at what is happening in chengdu and watch the relationship coming apart. Jesse do we see more retaliation coming . Do you expect any more u. S. Consulates in china closing or perhaps more china consulates in the United States will be closing . Right now issense there is parity. I think china has been careful that it isits end not going further than what the u. S. Has done and chronologically, the u. S. Shut down the consulate in houston first, so if chinese at this point were to want to do anything, it would be to leave things as they are right now. I dont know that i would guess this is the end of it. One has to think that if it is not a shuttering of the consulate, you have to think there will be some action from one side or the other simply because we are caught in this spiral here, so it may not happen on the diplomatic front. There have been fights on the human rights side, the trade side, on media side. There are all sorts of different fronts in this war right now, so we are all trying to figure out what the next one is, but i dont know that you can predict it right now. Jesse to be here conversation in china right now about attempting to open up highlevel negotiations with the United States or is it like you said . Sit back and wait what is next . Jonathan it is probably somewhere in between. I imagine there probably are back channel outreaches here to see whether or not they can message this, but there is a sense in china that talking isnt going to make much of a difference with the Trump Administration simply because mike pompeo in particular has planted his flag. This is his position and this is what they will be doing and if anything it is bracing for countermeasures to the sort of throwback at the u. S. For what they do next and things arent perfectly symmetrical in many ways. The two economies are closer in size, but the chinese economy is still much smaller than the u. S. We saw that during the trade war last year the china found it hard to match the u. S. Pound for pound. In terms of what happens next, they may struggle to match what the u. S. Is doing. Jesse we were talking earlier in the show about how quickly the relationship between china and the u. S. Has changed, from trade war to china being the best friend of the Trump Administration this year to back to where we are now. What is the impression of the relationship between china and the u. S. In china . It isan i do think probably pretty common with what a lot of americans are thinking, which is things are going downhill. I dont know there is any other sensible interpretation to what is going on but many people in china still do admire many things about the u. S. They still consume a lot of u. S. Entertainment, they love the nba. Many of them go to the u. S. To vacation. Many of them have studied in the u. S. Or have family members studying in the u. S. , so there is still a lot of the soft power of goodwill that his residual, but obviously, this back and forth is going to take a toll on that as im sure is happening the other way around in the u. S. There is amongll ordinary americans to china. Jesse how much tension do we being attention do we see paid to the upcoming election . Is this even being talked about among the people of china or the officials in china . Jonathan definitely among the officials in china and i would say probably among the politically minded people in china. There are people in every country of the rolled that dont tune into politics much but anybody watching anything political in china has got to be keeping a close eye on trump and biden in the fall and a lot of people are debating whether or not trump or biden would be the person they want to see in the oval office come next year. Jesse has been the response from the china government to the accusations of hacking and spying that the u. S. Laid upon it from the consulate in houston . Jonathan well, the official line is it is hogwash. Doing, not what we are and the u. S. Is shutting down its consulate merely because it trumps increase toughness going into the election so he can go to the electorate and say ive been tougher on china than joe biden is going to be. Hiking privately, everyone would it knowledge a lot of these consulates for any country, in any other country, there is going to be an element of information gathering and at what point it bleeds into intelligence. I think there is an acknowledgment of reality that this happens on both sides, but the thing is that the u. S. Hasnt shown all its cards and maybe it off not to but when it doesnt, it is hard to know what has gone on in houston is beyond the pale, according to the standards of what diplomacy generally is like. Jesse for the internationally minded viewers, what should we be keeping our eyes on . What news should be watching coming out of china this week . Jonathan well, in addition to everything happening on the u. S. China front, the economy continues to improve because the coronavirus here has mostly been conquered but china is dealing with another challenge domestically and that is widespread flooding in large parts of the country along the river in china and in asia, it has been overflowing for several weeks now and there are a lot of concerns about peoples livelihoods being affected, so obviously u. S. China is front of mind for many people but when your country is underwater, large parts of it, that will be a concern as well. One thing is for sure, china really does seem to have conquered most of the coronavirus pandemic here in the country. People are going back to restaurants, people are going back to school. Things are relatively normal again now and the economy is starting to come back. Jesse anything else we need to know before we end this conversation about the u. S. China relationship . Jonathan i just think people have to be aware that in the next three or four months until we get to election day, i think china really is going to be a big issue and i think people are going to be watching very closely to see what the rhetoric is both from trump and biden and to see how china response to that. Even if biden wins, it is not a given the relationship will change for the better. It could continue on this trajectory. We want to see what the rhetoric is like between the next two candidates for the next couple of months. Jesse we would like to thank jonathan cheng, the wall street journals china bureau chief for walking us through the view from china. Jonathan, thank you so much. To know what you think about the u. S. China relationship. Is there going to be a new cold war between the u. S. And china . Once again, our lines are democrats, 2027488000. Republicans, 2027488001. Independence, 2027488002. You can always textus at 2027488003. We are always reading on social media at twitter and on facebook. Com cspan. Lets go back to our phone lines and talk to duane from ohio. Duane, good morning. Caller im a hardcore trump supporter from 2016. I think the socalled cold war is warming up month by month into a flashpoint that could happen in the south china sea, taiwan, or other areas of asia. Involving chinese aggression and provoking a u. S. Response. My personal opinion is the capitalists have sold out american interests to china and the president , if he is bidctant reelected, for any further investment in china by american further investment in china by american companies. Bring those jobs back. Oncesperately need them this chinese wuhan viruses under control. From go to ralph jamestown, maryland. Good morning. Caller good morning. Jamestown, north dakota. Host my mistake. Caller thats fine. Union asked soviet the United States to join them, the soviet union, and attack china. You cant help but think what with the world look like today if Richard Nixon and the u. S. Senate had come along with that. The purpose of that attack being a preemptive strike to destroy chinese icbms. Thank you. From lets go to low law burnsville, North Carolina. Good morning. Caller good morning. Calling because i think and the need democrats need to Work Together and not be fighting on each side because it is coming to an end. Thiss showing people how god done people because of drugs and drinking, and i think there will be war between china. We owe china and america. We owe china in america. I think we need to strengthen it. Love everybody. It is coming to an end. Node knowed about this first. They fight and they put joe down. They put joe down saying hes got alzheimers. And this and that. If he had alzheimers, anybody can get alzheimers. I forget things myself. I think that people should love straighten this american left. I dont know if trunk will i do not know if trump will get in the way he has, but joes good person too. They dont need to be fighting on each side. The role needs to straighten up. Come. Going to people think there is not know god. They are a god. And a heaven, and a hell. God is coming back. Host lets go to mike from pittsburgh, pennsylvania. Independent line. Good morning. Caller good morning. Personally, we will never be able to beat china in any type of way. Economically, nor as far as war. And foremost first they have too many people. 1. 7 billion people. As far as this war is concerned, that would be stupid to try to pull Something Like that. The United States going all the way over there to try to fight a war with china, trump does not want a war. That is a good thing. He is not a war guy. He is ignorant, but he does not want a war. He wants to make money. I want to thank you and i appreciate everything, keep praying like the elderly woman said earlier. Dont give up hope. Continue to believe in the system. Mike pompeo gave a major speech on china earlier this week at the nexen library. Heres more of what he said. [video clip] centuryearmarks half a since dr. Kissingers mission to china and the 50th anniversary of president nixons trip isnt too far away. The rolled was much different than. Today, we are still Wearing Masks and watching the pandemic body count rise because the ccp failed to fail. We are reading every morning new headlines about oppression in hong kong. Are seeing staggering statistics of chinese trade abuse that costs american jobs. Including here in california. Where watching a Chinese Military that grows stronger and more menacing. I will echo the questions ringing in the hearts of minds themericans, what to American People have to show for have to show now 50 years on from engagement with china . What lets look and see some of our social media followers are saying about the possibility of a u. S. China new cold war. Post from facebook, you can see it now. Tweet, the u. S. And china will have the 21st of a cold war. Premuch all cyber. There ours text, the way things are right now in this world, i wouldnt put it past china to make some very aggressive moves. Not sure we will even have a cold war. Either way, it is nerveracking. Facebook saysfrom no, its more like an abusive relationship with both sides being codependent. We are too economically round up with each other. If either side really tried to hurt the other, they would hurt themselves just as badly in the process. Lets go back to our phone lines and see what you think about the possibility of a u. S. China cold war. Lets talk to dan from jackson heights, new york on the republican line. Caller hi. As theism is understood producers owning the means of production. Thathas happened now is there is nothing cheaper, there is nothing that can get the rich having big profits better than using chinese slave labor. Who cares that we are using chinese slave labor . This is the price china is paying to draw us in. When you look at hong kong, hong it is a trialy balloon. It is not a trial balloon. What we are doing to hong kong we are doing to we are not ready to defend taiwan. All we have done now is going to be a waste because we see hong kong as a trial balloon. People in taiwan know this is not a this is a show to the taiwanese of what is going to happen to the next. Because our economy totally depends on chinese slave labor. Or can find machines anything cheaper than chinese slave labor. That is how they got us. Our greed, our 1 seems to run everything, whether despite an or trump, it does not matter because the greed and americas overwhelming this greed by which we make big profits without making bigger prices by using chinese slave labor. This is what the british did. That was the end of the partition pyre. We are doing the same thing. To drawn, calling from lilo, mississippi. My brother from new york basicallysaid i am going to talk him if i can. It is basically americas problem. Had the best slaves in the world build the most powerful nation in the world. Did you pay them . No. Cheap [indiscernible] come on now, america. Who is going to buy your products . Everything is made in china. Now, i think we need a cold war. Lets say call that all intellectual property. You have military veterans. I have been studying this. They have intellectual properties and are robbing us blind. The average civilian just wants to get cheap products from walmart or whatever and doesnt understand what that does, the power that sensor another country. If they have 2 trillion of our wealth right now, they can throw our economy into shambles. Why do you think america keeps blacks down . They want to be able to take our 2 trillion and force us to spend 99 of it to prop up the election in the world economy. [indiscernible] china can do it in the blink of an eye by taking that 2 trillion and burning it up. That so much power was given to the chinese. From lets go to mary philadelphia, pennsylvania on the democratic line. Caller good morning. Debt we have with china is purely financial. This new cold war. I have heard in the past that President Trump owes several billions of dollars to china. Several of our political leaders wesenators, congresspeople o several Million Dollars to china. They had said maybe we should decide not to pay china back. This is purely greed. Reason for not paying these countries back that we have borrowed from. We are now 30 trillion in debt. Wars they want to get into for not paying these people back, this is how we got involved with ukraine. Russia back. This has to stop. To floyd from jonesville, virginia. Republican line. Good morning. Caller thank you for taking my call. The chinese, they are the ones that turns this virus loose. They made it in a lab and turned it loose. The reason they did it was because trump was beating them so bad in the economy. Our economy was drawing, people was to getting jobs. They turn that virus loose on us to stop that. And his soniden that has been taken taking millions of dollars from the chinese for what . I dont know. That has been going on. Vote for hoping people trump because he has been doing a good job. He is not perfect. Nobody is but jesus. Ezekiel chapter 38, there is a battle coming. Of have heard the battle armageddon, this is a battle of a god. Then people when they come against us will be destroyed withheld balls weighing 180 l balls. With hel over 80 million babies killed in america by democrats voting for people like biden. Getse, vote for trump and rid of the stuff of killing our own people. Go to mona from rockville, maryland on the republican line. Caller good morning. Not a caseay this is of agree to disagree. It is easy to say that past administrations have all gotten along with china and trump is the one stirring the pot, but it is very difficult to be the one who is going to sit there and actually make the difference and do something even if people step back and think that it is not necessarily what should be done. It is difficult to make the stuff decision to say, i am going to be proactive. Care if your a democrat, republican or independent. We are all americans. This isnot financial, not about slave labor or cheap labor. This is about national security. Go aheadlingness to and steal our intellectual property. Thats. Lets talk to lynn from massachusetts. Caller good morning. In because call people should understand that President Trump is provoking a conflict with china that will lead to a buildup of our military armaments, which will take the money from the country where we need this money for our own survival and he is going to put it in new ships and more weaponry. This is called wagging the dog. It has happened before. Is sinking innt the polska may he starts a conflict. Polls, he starts a conflict so everyone rallies around him and the money goes to the conflict. In the midwest are now in a bad way because trump cut off trade with china. He has done all he can to insults china and get them to act against us so he can be the wartime president. This happens to us constantly when we see we are going to fix our own situation internally. We have a president who goes out and starts conflict with other countries. Owneed to repair our problems here before we start cutting ties with the world. Lets look at some other news. We will start with a story in the Washington Post about the confrontation and apology from representative ted yoho and representative alexandria ocasiocortez. A christian Nonprofit Organization that fights world hunger asked representative ted yoho to resign from its board after he confronted a female colleague and reportedly used sexist expletives. Bread for the world announced , his recentment action adwords words as reported in the bd are not reflected of are not reflective of the ethical standards of our board of directors. The group said that the decision decision was taken to affirm our commitment to coming alongside women and people of color, naturally and globally, as they continue to lead us to a more racially inclusive and equitable world. Slurhas denied using the attribute it to him by the Hill Reporter who overheard the exchange. Still, the congressman apologized and a floor speech wednesday and said i cannot apologize for my passion or loving my god my country. Bread for the world is concerned his behavior in the last two days this not reflect the values of respect and passion that jesus calls on us to exhibit everyday and we expect from our board members. Also, continuing this week will be services for the lay congressman john lewis. A viewing and a service went on yesterday at Troy University in his hometown of troy, alabama. Here is a little bit from what his brother, the brother of representative john lewis said yesterday in troy, alabama. [video clip] to sum up the life of john lewis, i would say she worked a lifetime to help others and make the world a better place to live. Note, i talked to john thursday, the day before he we would always have these interesting conversations. He would always ask me how is everybody doing . No matter how bad he felt. We exchanged for love we had for each other. Thursday. Thursday night, rather. Was, how is the family doing . How is everybody doing . I said they are fine. He said, would you make sure to tell them that i asked about them . On a humorous side, when john congress, sworn into 1986, i was there. Ceremony, swearing in right before the swearing in ceremony, he looked up. He looked a bent he gave me the thumbs up. I given i gave him the thumbs up back. After the event was over, we were together. I asked him, what were you thinking when you gave me the thumbs up . Issaid, i was thinking, this a long way from alabama. [laughter] those are the memories i have a pie brother. Casketater today, louis will be part of a procession across the end bend pettus met lewislewis led protesters in a march that ended up being called bloody sunday. Eastern on cspan, cspan. Org and free on the cspan radio app. Lets see if we can get more calls and on the subject of u. S. And china. A possible new cold war before the top of the hour. Lets go to robert from washington, d. C. Good morning. Caller thank you for taking my call. [indiscernible] you have to be from d. C. To know the real information. It was reagan that shook hands with russia. [indiscernible] i befriended a vietnam veteran. [indiscernible] we know for fact it was George H W Bush that america and chan china in america and 1991. The money evaporated out of the banks. That what they was scraping off was pictures of mr. Trump running down the street from the money falling out of your pocket. [indiscernible] df fcic repaid back the money to have them socalled in the bank. That money never reached the bank. An additional hundred 50 billion the fbi did not have at the time to do from the hold 548 billion. 1995, [indiscernible] i said the posters down there at the white house. Host lets go to john from latonia, ohio. Caller good morning, how are you . Host just fine. Caller i love the show. I look for to it every sunday. So, i listen to both sides. Ndcp has not quite been four years, he is not really a politician yet. There is still a learning curve and making bad decisions. He really has put the world on notice that we are done being taken advantage of. Does not matter what side of the table youre sitting on, if you are a true american, these policies are good for america. It is over time. Reworking that to who could be thats not a good idea. It is just crazy. Once upon a time once upon a time there were two things that separated democrats and republicans. Prolife portray spear Big Government were small government. Not have are everything because they know politically it will hurt their reelection. It is ridiculous we need to clean house and get rid of these lifetime politicians. Until we do that, nothing changes. Host we want to read a quick statement from you from the chinese a quick statement for you from the chinese government. This comes from the Council General of the peoples republic of china. China and the United States relations are at a critical juncture with challenges ahead. The new while at, so to speak. 1920, the wall was in crisis and hitlers was invading all of that stuff and stealing their gold, america was at peace. Fromcting all of this gold overseas because they had to fight this war. And havingup coming a lot of gold at the end of world war ii. In 1944, there was that becament where america the dollar became the reigning currency. America has been taking advantage of the whole world ever since that day. They started printing more money. Before then, the dollar used to be backed by gold. That 1944 agreement, they started printing more money than gold. That they have. A 1971, president nixon took the dollar out of the cold standard. The gold standard. The dollar became fiat currency. If you dont Pay Attention to ,here the crisis is going because this is actually not over. Corona just popped its bubble brn. The bubble we are in. The standard of living in america are is going to depreciate. If you think it is bad now, it is going to get really bad. Steal lets go to steve. Caller good morning. Give myo first condolences to the lewis family. For their loss. China has been stealing our intellectual property for a while. Host we are back with boris epshteyn, who is trump 2020 Strategic Advisor for coalition and former special assistant to President Trump, and he is here to talk to us about President Trumps reelection strategy. Boris, good morning. Guest good morning, jesse. Thank you so much for having me. Host first, tell us what a Strategic Advisor for coalition actually does for trump 2020 campaign . Guest i am charged with maximizing the president s constituency, so making sure we are reaching out west many folks across the country as possible, on all backgrounds, all political spectrums, and maximize the vacuum for President Trump. That is number one. Number two, i am assisting with the finance folks, doing such a great job under kimberly guilfoyle, and i have got my hands in a number of different things, but all comes together doing all i can to get President Trump reelected on november 3. The decision about behind canceling the jackson jacksonville, florida part of the Republican National convention. What was the thinking behind it . Guest the president was clear about it. He looked at the situation in florida and decided that the health of floridians is number one. He is always fully focused on the safety and security of the American People and decided it was nothing right time to go traditional convention, but nevertheless, he will speak directly to the American People, innovative, exciting, and that underline how important it is to have four more years of President Trumps policy. Host so what will the Republican National convention look like . What what we see from President Trump during that convention . Will events still continue in North Carolina . Will there be other events in surrounding cities . What can we look forward to . Guest well, the traditional business of a convention, as the president said, is going to take place in charlotte, largely behind closed doors, if not all behind closed doors. It will be scaled down, doing the business of renominating President Trump and Vice President mike pence to be our Republican Partys nominees this year, and the rest of the week will be full of exciting, innovative events that are agile and that really speak to the American People about the vital trumpspresident leadership for four more years. Host so what is the plan to help generate excitement, now that we will not have our traditional balloon drop convention where we have tons of people cheering on their favorite candidate . What is the plan on the trump site to generate excitement among his voters, leading up to election day . Guest jesse, you know, it is interesting, i have been involved this is my fourth president ial election in a row that i am involved in. Traditionally, you have the state convention, and the balloons dropped, maybe there is a bump up in the polls, but not all of that goes away. Are focused on is connecting to voters nonstop. Our digital operations are so strong, the Trump Campaign was able to take a traditional operation to the digital operation, overnight, when covid19 hit. So that is going to continue to be a vital part of our effort, and then the president is going to keep doing events all across the country. Lets not forget, he is not just a candidate, right . He is President Trump, he is leading our country throughout covid19, he is rebuilding our economy, and look what is happening in our economy, right we had this plague hit of covid19, the stock market went way down, and the economy is centrally had to stop, and now the stock market is up at 27,000 on the dow, and the economy is roaring. The president is going to continue to fully concentrate on his job as president while running for reelection. Let our viewers join in on the conversation, so i will give you the phone lines. Democrats, your line is going to be 202 7488000. Republicans, we what you to call in at 202 7488001. Independents, your line is going to be 202 7488002. Keep in mind, you can always text us at [no audio] , and we are03 always reading on twitter cspanwj, and on facebook. Com at journal cspan. Org. At facebook. Com cspan. What is the plan to keep both voters and the Campaign Staff safe as the months go by . What if the plan to give everybody safe and still get out to see President Trump supporters around the country . Guest that is a great question, and the campaign has put in an extensive seizure. , temperatureting checks, the giving out of gloves, of hand sanitizers, of masks. So the campaign is fully said to make sure that anyone who comes to our events is safe during these really unprecedented times. Host what do we see, as far as the Convention Goes . You say that theres going to be a lot of behind closed doors events going on in charlotte. What will we be able to see as far as the social distancing and the masks . Will we be able to see that kind of thing from republican delegates in charlotte later on this year . Inst , well let me be clear, terms of behind closed doors, i do not want it to sound like it as a cloak and dagger thing, republicans and democrats are nominating their nominees, proudly nominating President Trump and Vice President mike pence. That is what will be happening in North Carolina. We will be following all of the procedures, rules, and regulations, in order to make sure the delegates and anybody over there are safe. Host several National Polls show former Vice President joe leading the president nationally and in some critical battleground states. What is the Campaign Plan and strategy to turn these numbers around before novembers election . Guest lets talk about those poles a little bit. I was thinking about it a little bit before coming on to talk to you, which i was excited about. The at the polls from 2016, trump versus hillary race. I was Senior Advisor in that campaign. We were shown to be down about to august, ints july and we all know what happened in the end. If you look at the national post, somethe state of them have 10, which expect 10 to 15 more democrats to be voting republican, and that is not what happened. It is not what happened in 2018, and it is not what happened in 2016. No matter what the polls say, and we learned that in 2016, the Trump Campaign is actuall absolutely working hard, day in and day out, to deliver the message to the American People. What is that message . For more years of prosperity, rebuilding our economy, in a standing up to china, it is rebuilding our borders, renegotiating bad new trades and deals, like the usmca over nafta, it is what we are focused on delivering the message of, and is happening every day, and that is our strategy for beating joe biden who, lets just be honest, here i am talking to you this morning, and the president has been so active and doing a lot of interviews and doing his press briefings, three just in the last week. Where are joe bidens people . Where is joe biden himself . They are doing to Hillary Clinton strategy from 2016, which is to hide somewhere in the basement. She did that, too. It is not just joe biden. That strategy did not work in 2016. It is not going to work now. Host lets let some of our viewers join the conversation. We will start with danny caller from atlanta, georgia, on the democratic line. Danny, good morning. Caller you know what, the . It is always amazing to see boris up there, you know, and i just want to say a couple of things, you know, russia and 100,000 to jesse, are you there . Host yes, go ahead, danny. Caller putin offered a 100,000 dollars bounty to kill american soldiers. You heard nothing out of trump. By the time that november 1 comes here, we are going to have dead,to 240,000 americans all because donald trump has quit. He has waived the white flag. What was trump doing yesterday . He was out golfing. Leadership that boris think the americans are going to fall for and vote for for another 12 years. You guys should go on vacation for the next four years. Host go ahead and respond there, boris. Guest well, i appreciate dannys excitement and any being so fervently into this president ial race. First of all, the bounty story and thatly debunked, was based on preliminary intelligence to die and not administration. I will let the Administration Speak to that story. The president shutdown travel to early in april and early march. The president has been absolutely leading in the fight against covid19, danny, much of the number, 240 thousand dead, that is a projection i am not sure where he is that. The president said loud and toor that even one death is many. He initiated operation warp speed to get the vaccine out there as soon as possible. He has worked with private industry to get our testing up, so the most prolific testing and 50 whole wide world, over Million People tested for covid19. It is just a flat out lie, frankly. Host lets go to dave, who is calling from jacksonville, florida, on the independent line. Dave, good morning. Caller hi, good morning. Thanks for letting me on here. I called about something else, but since boris opened the door on the 2016 strategy, does that mean you are going to accept help from russia again and other foreign players . But the real reason i called was the cancellation of the convention here in town. Some onnt to push back canceledon that trump for all of these all terrific, safety reasons, which, quite frankly, like a lot of other things that he says, is just a pocketful. Or the chief of police, had come on local tv and there were safety concerns, not because of the covid, but just the general security. They did not have enough secure it, they had not gotten a plan from the rnc, and more importantly, they had not gotten money. , and the city council took a vote and were not going to put up any money, and the poll said 60 40, and they said we cannot keep this safe. All of a sudden, trumpy says, oh, well, i am going to do it because of the virus. I want to push back on the notion that he did it because of covid. Host go ahead and respond, boris. Guest anyone touting the russia hoax should be ashamed of themselves. That has been totally debunked. We spent three years of not hoax, so you should probably get that out of your mind. 16 campaign won fair and square. Lost. Rry, we won, she as far as jacksonville, it can be summed up in won the folks in jacksonville said they did not think it would be saved to have the convention there right now. President trump also said specifically that he believes the United States should not have a convention there right now. I dont see what the issue is, so lets move on. Host lets go to john, who is calling from hi wisconsin, the democratic line. Caller yes, can you hear me . Host yes, go ahead, john. Caller i just want to say to this guy come of this morning, a trump supporter was shot and killed in a driveby in milwaukee. I do not know if you got that news, but the people in milwaukee are waiting for those troops to come in, because they got weapons. And it is going to be a lot of bloodshed when they come, so that is all i have got to say. Guest what is that supposed to mean . Now you have people on your air threatening our lives is that what, it is, jesse . Host lets go to chris, who is calling guest i mean, you just had a caller call in who said that shooting Trump Supporters is right. Anybody was a democrat or independent should listen to what that gentleman just sat and realize where the democrats are in this country. Lives. E threatening our as disgusting, it is despicable, and it is criminal. And that sounded like a threat against the president and his campaign, and i will have the secret service investigate it. Host lets go to chris, who is calling from oceanside, california on the republican line. Chris, go ahead. Caller yes, thank you for taking my call, jesse. Epshteyn, thank you for doing the job youre doing, to get our president reelected. And yes, it is comments like that when are we going to get the Stronger Political leaders out here in order to get rid of nancy pelosi and the like, like gavin newsom, who is destroying our state, with this covid closures now, and perpetrating covid19 for their agenda for their socialist agenda. Epshteyn, again, i want to thank you for everything that you do, because it is people like you who going to make America Great again. Guest thank you for the kind words. We really appreciate it. Youre doing everything we can to get the president reelected on november 3 and absolutely get as many republicans out there, running for all of those elected positions throughout the country, that very much includes california. Stay strong. Keep supporting the president. Keep supporting the republican agenda of opportunity, of strength, of economic fortitude in america. Host lets actually look at the story about that the caller was referring to recently earlier out of milwaukee. I want to read to you, boris, i do not know if you saw the story, but lets read this on the air. The shooting death of a black hasp supporter investigators calling for an investigation. Host no american should fear for their personal safety because of where they live and their political affiliation, he added. Kruger spokesman kim gaetz said he shoul could not comment on te request. Face in familiar the neighborhood, proclaiming his religious or political thoughts. He had a lot of different views, but he was in this last view that made people be outrageous with him. Trump signs were stirring of a Group Responses on neighborhood facebook pages. Washat is what the caller referring to earlier there, boris. Guest that is a powerful story, right, jesse . It is despicable, it is disgusting, that is the tactics of the left right now. You look at all the violence happening across the country, look at seattle, look at captain david doran, shot down in st. Louis. At really, this story of trump supporter being killed for political purposes, i mean, imagine if that were a democrat or a biden supporter. It would be the biggest news. You would see that on every network of it you do not see it here barely at all it is really disheartening that violence and supporters,st trump the mainstream media, while they focus on all kinds of other gavees and, you know, biden a pass and focus on the green new deal, you have really despicable, scary violence against Trump Supporters, and seemingly, the caller that you had call in supports that kind of violence. And i think that is very dangerous for this country. It should be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Host lets go back to our lines, and lets talk to sharon, who is calling from minnesota on the democratic line. Sharon, good morning. Caller good morning, jesse. Thanks for taking my call. I am hoping that this gentleman remembers just a couple of weeks ago, i cannot remember the city, where the two crazy lunatics came out of the house with ar15s and pointed them at nonTrump Supporters, but of course we tend to forget them kinds of things. But anyway, a few seconds ago, the gentleman made a comment that hilary has refused to accept this election, and we know that that is not true, because she did call the president on the night of the election, and i think this whole fact that the republicans suffer from oc hd, which is of course obsessivecompulsive hillary disorder, because this gentleman, i do not know how many times, has talked about hillary, so we need to get on that. Cry aboutant to the trump supporter that died i agree. I am a democrat. I think violence is awful. But what i also think is awful is that 140,000 americans are dead because of this president and his inability to deal with a conflict, and i can only hope and pray that we do not see this man go into the oval, but we see him come out in an orange jumpsuit and shackles and chains. Host go ahead and respond there, boris. Guest well, good luck with that fear you can keep hoping and praying. A couple of things, first of all, the couple in st. Louis came out on their own lawn. That is what that woman was referring to. They came out on their own lawn, with their own rightfully owned firearms, protecting themselves from a mob that had broken into private property. That is what it was. They did not shoot anybody. They did not hurt anybody. So im not sure how anybody in their right mind can equate that with a trump supporter being gunned down. That couple in st. Louis did everything right, and they prosecuted. E i know that they were charged by the local District Attorney, but the District Attorney of minnesota, the attorney general of minnesota, im sorry, said that was a political prosecution, and that should be thrown out. That was for the couple in st. Louis. In terms of hillary, of course she has not accepted it. Hillary is still spinning that russia hoax, anywhere she goes, she talks about it, welcome it was russia this, russia that, well, guess what . Three years of investigations by the house, the senate, and mueller came up with absolutely nothing. The president got elected, he is going to get elected again. Lastly on covid19, you know, i am not sure where the left has gotten these talking points, oh, the president somehow not being fully involved and leading on our efforts to battle covid19. This virus came from china. President trump has done everything he could come up from stopping travel from europe, the vaccine, respirators where they were needed, sending the floating hospitals to new york and california, and gavin newsom, that democratic governor of california, committed that, as did Governor Cuomo from new york, so this notion that the democrats have convinced themselves of that President Trump is somehow to blame for this plague is absolute total and utter nonsense. Host i want to show you some ,deo from washington journal this is from an ally of the trump president , who said this about the upcoming election. I want you to respond to it. [video clip] i am not going to make that case. I am going to shoot straight with you. I think the race is much tighter than ask portrayed in these polls. I think it is possible for joe biden to win. Host so i want you to respond lapp, about what he thinks, whether he can make the case that joe biden cant win the election, and that is what he said about whether you think joe biden cant win the election. What do you think about what he said there . Guest of course, anything is possible, and the president has talked about that, too, but we are very confident that when the case is made, the contrast is made, that due to the strength, stamina, and leadership of President Trump and the weakness of liberalism and sleepiness of joe biden, it is clear who the American People will take, and it is donald trump for four more years. Host lets go back to our phone lines them and lets go to ed, who is calling from columbia station, ohio on the republican line. Ed, good morning. Caller yeah, i want to talk to boris, and that im going to listen to his response, because i had got you on mute, so i do not have to delay. I have two questions for you, boris. I am a conservative, i used to be a republican, but i am not a rino, you know what the rino means, republican in name only. Trump, where are all the republicans backing him up . You have got a few come a handful, but Mitch Mcconnell, a guy in kentucky, he dont say a word. None of them do, hardly. We know where romney stands. Kasich, he works for cs and bc nbc now. S and b that is why i am a conservative, because it is extremely upsetting that they sit there, but getting elected again, many of them have been there for years, and do not back trump, our president. One other thing, this media has been in the tank and against the Democrat Party since the day, before he even won, the last year of obama, when they set him up, they keep going up on russia. He got the virus in december, and there was nancy pelosi running around in sentence san francisco, that is destroyed, going to chinatown, kissing and hugging everyone. Now they blame him. Anyway, i am going to shut up. Go trump. Make America Great again. And the anarchists in that party, on that side and biden, it even wins, he wont even make two years. He is just a puppet. Everyone knows it. But the media gets me, the newspapers they have sold out, they are wrong and everything from day one, every story, every delusion, wrong, get they will not ever apologize. I am glad they got sued and oddly lost hundreds of millions of dollars for that kid they ruined. Host go ahead and respond there, boris. Guest thanks for your energy. Thanks for the support. I will tell you this, some members of the Republican Party, like mitt romney, have disgraced themselves in disgrace their constituents for electing to support the president , the republican values, and republic and party. Mitch mcconnell has actually led on a very strong wake, making sure the president s nominations are confirmed from over 200 constitutional confirmed judges, two Supreme Court justices, just in his first two years, which is more magnitude than president obama did in the same time. So the republicans are there. The president has about 96 percent approval in the Republican Party. When it comes to republican officials, people like jim again, youve got Mitch Mcconnell, Lindsey Graham and the senate as well, so the president does have backing from republicanelected officials, but of course, it could always be stronger. Host lets go to nathaniel, who is calling from bismarck, north dakota on the independent line. Nathaniel, good morning. Caller good morning. I have got two questions. The first is dealing with what we are dealing with right now, covid19. Had covid19 been a biological weapon, where over 50 to 90 of fatalities,ed are what with the response have been and if our response had been responding to covid19 like it was a biological weapon, first point, intelligence should have known about it before it ever reached our shores. What with the response have been, and why cant we go back to that step, to just wipe this thing out and get it out of our country once and for all . That theese fake ideas surgical masks that surgeons wear every day or the respirators, firefighters and other personnel where every day long, they dont give them a medical issues, and you have got these people running around the country, saying that they are not going to do this and they are not going to do that, when they are the cause of it, and that came from your side. Be in am independent, so for trump or not being for trump is not an issue i am always for the president and hoping they are doing a good job. My second question is this. About biden talking basement and bas something obama did, you can verify that Mitch Mcconnell had a show on with sean hannity, and he laughed about having over 300 pieces of legislation that had been sitting on his desk that he would not let obama pass, because if you let the democrats pass a bill, then it would look good to the American People as if it was a good deal, and it was beneficial to the people and beneficial to the stock market and the economy, so he cannot let those bills pass, because you do not want him to be president , per cpac 2009, when Rush Limbaugh was the keynote speaker, saying their number one agenda for the next four years was to make him a oneterm president. You even have Mitch Mcconnell putting that out. So i am not trying to run back and forth with all the blame here, is what i call the hand in the cookie jar distraction tactic. Host go ahead and respond there, boris. Guest thank you for the questions. For the first one, i am not going to play a hypothetical here. This is awhat if biological weapon, fatalities at 50 , i mean, we are at fatalities at 1 , 2 on covid19, statebystate, so that is a different issue. We are dealing with a different issue, and the president has spoken with experts, he has got his medical experts, infrastructure experts, experts in terms of getting as much, as many supplies out to the country as needed, so that is the focus in battling covid19, while also making sure that our economy recovers, as it has been. I mean, we had the greatest jobs numbers, jobs recovery numbers in history, may and june, great housing numbers, great manufacturing numbers, and of course the rebound in the stock market, so you have that there. Know, iecond issue, you tend to think, i would have to go and look at those particular clips, but i do know that president obama had a Democratic Senate and congress for the first two years of his residency, so that is a fact there. And the key concepts we are talking about is joe biden today. What is joe biden doing to convince the American People to serve his books . You have seen that with reporters he gets angry when asked a question. He does not want to be answering questions about his policies, maybe because, a, he does not understand them, or, b, he does not really support them, and they are really aoc, Bernie Sanders, beto orourke, far left policies that biden is just the empty vessel four. You boris, i want to bring something you wrote in new week magazine. Here is what you wrote host tell us what you meant when you wrote that, boris. Guest what im talking about is the history of joe biden, when he first ran for president , really is best shot at becoming president was 1988, and he had leave that campaign, because he plagiarized a british politician, putting that story as his own, and he also misappropriated Robert Kennedys words, i believe, as well as Hubert Humphreys words, so biden has a history of plagiarism that goes back not just to 1980 ava goes back to law school. Well, that is not malicious, well, i went to law school, and plagiarism is a big issue if it came out at law school, for me or anyone i was in class with them and now joe biden is plagiarizing from the far left, this unity plan he put out. ,lagiarism from Bernie Sanders plagiarized from the u. N. Plagiarize theo title from President Trump. Bid danger of that as he is plagiarizing a title, plagiarizing the overarching message by americas will also plagiarizing the actual meat of it by the farleft, which would destroy the American Economy, the green new deal, making sure that america is dependent on Foreign Countries for energy again. That would be extremely dangerous. Host lets go back to our phone lines, and lets start with george, who is calling from new jersey on the republican line. George, good morning. Caller hello, can you hear me . Host yes, go ahead, george. Caller i just want to thank cspan. I have got a couple of questions for boris. He said he trump administer occasion was a total hoax and everything like that, just like trump did. Back in 2007 or something, trump was on an interview, they asked where they got money from, and he said we get all of our money from russia. Guest that is not what he said. Caller yes, he did. Guest he said we do some business there, that is what he said. Caller no. Did the deep state force donald trump, jr. To go into the tower and have the meeting with russians . Did deep state force them to have the back channels through the russian embassy, ok . And then trump says, ive got the greatest mind in the world. I remember everything, when it came to the questions. Mueller did not exonerate them. He said he obstructed justice. His answers. I dont remember. I dont recall. And the covid thing, he said oh, it is fake news, it is going away. This is is a total failure. It starts out good to begin with, and then it turns bad. Host boris, go ahead. Guest jesse, that is who you have calling on the republican line, huh . [laughs] those are left talking points. All the things the left try to blow into a big deal. The president was absolutely exonerated. There was no collusion. It was total exoneration, not an absolute fact, and anyone who believes different and look around and see if there has been anything that came out of the mueller investigation. Nothing came out of it except, again, exoneration of the president s and it was made very r obstruction. And operation warp speed, to make sure we have a vaccine as soon as possible. Stopping. Stopping travel from china. Stopping travel from europe. You compare that to nancy pelosi and joe biden who, again, stopping travel from china, and in the case of pelosi, she was not doing it to a socialistic party, a broad party, down to san francisco, saying no, no, nothing is wrong. The same thing was happening with Democratic Leaders in new york. The president led on covid19, and because of his decision to close the borders to china, to europe that we have not had more people dying in this country. . Decision said that alone saved tens of thousands of american lines, to close travel from china. You to reacti want president y, quote, trump calling the countrys first racist president. I want you to react to this story. Host respond to what joe biden there. Guest guest first of all, donald trump is not a racist, full stop. Donald trump loves all americans. Ive had the honor of spending time with the president , working with the president , and i know for a fact that the president is the farthest thing from what the democrats try to paint him as. Two, what world is joe biden living in . This he not realize Woodrow Wilson was president . Woodrow wilsons name is being taken off a school, princeton, and guess what, he is a democrat. Joe biden himself is a racist. I said that, and i mean it, he said if you vote for trump as an african american, you aint black. What is that . That someone should vote a specific way because of the color of their skin. Look at bidens comments on race all the way back in the 1970s, talking about a racial jungle, so maybe joe biden should look at himself in the mirror, and he is just projecting on others. Host lets go back to our phone lines can i lets go to steve, who is calling from sierra vista, arizona, on the republican line. Need, good morning. Caller good morning, jesse. Good morning, boris. I am a trump supporter. I used to be a democrat. I want to bring something up to the American People. Nobody in the media is talking about this. They had in the beginning during the conventions or whatever, they had toasty got come out, tulsihe spoke toasty gabbard come out, and she spoke very eloquently. She would be the only one to be able to beat trump, even though i am a trump supporter, but it shows the hypocrisy of the Democratic Party that they do not care about their people, they just care about their power and their politics, because if they really cared about uniting this country behind one liter president , Tulsi Gabbard should have been in the running. But because she is a zionist, ok, they have a thing against that. And it was the Democratic Party that started slavery and the Democratic Party, they were supposed to be for the minorities, but really they were stabbing him in the back every chance they get, and it is funny, because growing up, i grew up a democrat, and i thought the politics were right, and that i recently was educated by somebody who showed me a lot of things in the history, like i said, i used to be in love with hillary and the clintons and did not like trump. If somebody would have told me i was going to do a 180 come i never would have believed it, but once my eyes were open and i to some information, i had do an aboutface and leave the Democratic Party behind. Im sorry. Host go ahead and respond there, boris. Guest thank you so much for joining the Republican Party and being a trump supporter. I appreciate that. You obviously support a president to make America Great, make america strong, make sure america continues to be the leader in the world. Congresswoman gabbard, representative gabbard was a strong candidate. She is a, veteran. She is a woman. She is of a minority background care and she is of the great state of hawaii, but the democrats absolutely disparaged her. She is a russian puppet. Hillary apparently sees the russian hoax everywhere she looks, and the democrats did not give the democrats a fair shake. Like President Trump would have absolutely won over representative gabbard, but the democrats do not want that, they want the party of aoc, Bernie Sanders, elizabeth warren, beto orourke. They want the green new deal. They are not supporters of the state of israel. Look at the socalled squad of aoc, alana morris, i on a pressley, two of are antisemites. The Democratic Party is not your fathers, not your mother Democratic Party. The Democratic Party is so far left, it is outside the mainstream. Host boris, the last time President Trump sat down for a fox news interview, and during that interview, he was asked whether he would accept the results of novembers election. Here is what President Trump said. [video clip] pres. Trump i think mailin voting is going to rig the election. I really do. Are you suggesting you might not accept the results of the election . Pres. Trump i have to say, look, hillary asked me the same thing. Know, i ask you the same thing in the debate. There is a tradition in this country, the peaceful transition of power, no matter how hard fought a campaign is, that at the end of the campaign, that the loser concedes to the winter not saying you are necessarily going to be the loser or the winter, but that the loser concedes to the winter, and that the country comes together, in part for the good of the country. Are you saying youre not prepared now mr. Trump what i will say is i will tell you at the time. I will keep you in suspense. Pres. Trump and you know what, she is the one who never accepted it i agree. What can you give a direct answer, you will accept the election . Pres. Trump i have to see joe, i have to see. Host go ahead and respond to that exchange between Chris Wallace and the president. Guest the president is very direct. He is going to make sure that this election is legitimate, that it is carried out correctly, that mailin voting does not perpetrate voter fraud, as it has done in paterson, new jersey, in the vatican and other places all across this country. He wants to make sure we have a legitimate and lawful election. The president is very clear on that. Host is there a specific position from the Trump Campaign . . On mailin voting example, there are a lot of military who have used mailin voting for years. Guest jesse, that is a great question. Theres a difference between absentee voting and mailin voting. Of course the military, those unable to be home, those serving overseas, those who really, honestly, truly are not able to vote in their home state, that is totally fine, and that has been in place for a long time, but all male voting where people do not have to go to the ballots come in the state of nevada, they had hundreds of thousands of dollars mailin ballots, that is where the trouble lies. In paterson, new jersey come as i mentioned, 19 of the balance were ruled to be fraudulent. There is a huge problem with that, but it is a big difference from absentee voting that you mentioned, jealous jesse. Host lets go back to our democratic line and talk to all of our, who is calling from falls church, virginia. Caller hello . Host you are on the air. Go ahead. Caller thank you, jessica and i appreciate you. I appreciate cspan. I would like to speak to mr. Boris. I would like to let them know that donald trump is the worst president this country has ever had. Donald trump is a liar. Women off twoaid weeks before the election, to get elected, to keep that information from coming out. The American People, jesse, i am praying that they wake up and to get this we have gentleman out of the white house, or this country will never be the same. Host go ahead and respond there, boris. Guest well, i appreciate olivers energy. Of course i disagree with him. I think the president is one of the best leaders we have had in a long time. What i the president could have set up a cushion for this country to have the plague that covid19 had, for the economy to go down but now to bounce right back up . What other president could have renegotiated nafta . Everyone, democrat and republican, said you could not do that, the north American Free trade agreement that was costing us millions of jobs, millions of dollars, could not be renegotiated, but the president did it. What other president could stand up to china . Barack obama let china run roughshod all over america for eight years, all over the world. President trump stopped china in their tracks. China had the worst gdp in 28 years. So you look at, altogether, and you look at a strong leader, you are seeing a leader that has been defie decisive, a leader tt has made a country great. Evenhen you look at biden, the secretary of defense had biden has been wrong on every issue of security over the last 40 plus years. How could we allow a guy like that to become the president , especially now . Lets all be honest with each other. Biden is not who he was in 1988, he is not we was 10 years ago, and that was bad, but now he is just a shadow of himself. We cannot have him has his finger on the button. Obama sater president and talked with joe biden about the countrys coronavirus Pandemic Response and President Trumps response to the coronavirus pandemic. Here is what they said. [video clip] guy, come ins the middle of a pandemic, trying to take away protections for 100 Million People who have preexisting conditions. I do not think he has any sense of empathy. I do not think he can associate at all. You and i hadma experience dealing with Health Crises and Public Health crisis, and, in each instance, what you and i understood, and why i have so much confidence you are going to be able to deal with covid in a way that other countries with our kinds of resources are dealing with it right now, which is smartly, i have confidence that you are actually going to listen to the experts. Mr. Biden yeah. Fmr. Pres. Obama and you are going to Pay Attention to the science, and you are not going. O quit try and actually bend down the curve of the disease and transmission rates. Mr. Biden when we left office, you had set up a Pandemic Office in the white house. We had people from cdc, 44 people in china. We knew a pandemic this was not going to be the only one that ever occurred. Fmr. Pres. Obama and the goal was to create an Early Warning system around the world, by creating international cooperation, so that when you saw it coming, you had time to prepare. Mr. Biden right. Fmr. Pres. Obama i know how deeply you care about american families, and that any issoflife that preventable if you are president of the United States, it is your job to try to prevent it. To formerespond president obama and former Vice President joe biden and their statements there. Guest first of all, jesse, was that boring. Oh, goodness gracious. Does anyone think that joe biden is up to be in president . It is obvious that barack obama does not think he is up to it. I hear what he is saying, but you can hear in the tone and the body language that president obama knows biden is just embarrassing himself. Biden led the response to the h1n1 swine, and he completely bungled it. Cdc,tually overruled the and they stopped testing for the swine fluke. So that oh, biden is some sort of a leader, listening to experts commit is nonsense. All you have to do is go back and look at the 2000 9h1n1 situation. Oh, we have cdc experts in china, so what are they saying, they would depend on china to help us deal with the china virus . That is incredible. It is absolutely ridiculous to even think of. We know for a fact that china hid the virus. O. , the world health organization, was complacent in to theo their solution virus, h1n1, in 2009 absolutely god we do notank have joe biden as president. Host lets see if we can get a few more calls and before the top of the hour good lets go to dave on the republican line. Dave, good morning. Caller good morning. Thanks for taking my call could i would like to make a couple of statements and follow up with a question for boris, please. Firstly, russia gate, it is so unfortunate and alarming that the news media is still anything about russia and our president being involved together. If they would only allow the public to see the facts that are being presented by at least all the d classifications, but if they would also listen to find fullthe Mueller Report was of left out, exculpatory evidence, which makes it a pile isjunk, and this same team what biden is trying to pull in. And then we get to the coronavirus. Everyone is saying the president did horrible things. Remember, when this first came up, they were projecting upwards of 2 million american lives lost , and the president has capped it well under the next projection of 200,000 lives. And folks still think the president has done something wrong. My question for boris, i am absolutely frightened of what the Democratic Party has become, and it is so in our face. My question is we most recently saw the speaker of the house, nancy pelosi, disclose that she had passed her test for being second in line. I have never heard any speaker say such a thing, and i know there is no coincidences in d. C. We know maryland voting is wrought with fraud. We have seen new york going out with nearly 30 of voters, probably conservatives, the way all the accidents have been going. So what is she telling us . We know that they cant win the election, unless they cheat. Is she saying that, if they can get biden in, everyone will step down, and she will become madam president . Host go ahead and respond there, boris. Guest thanks, jesse. Dave, thank you for your kind words and the affirmation about President Trump, no doubt about that. As far as the nancy pelosi come i would have to look at the quote, but here is what we do know the demo present pushing for all mailin voting, because they do want to read this election. They do want to take americans vote away, and they want to make sure that they come to power anyway, anyhow, and we cannot allow for that to happen. Again, do not forget, joe biden is an empty vessel for farleft policies. He does not have a vision of his own. That is what he is a plagiarist. He does not have an idea of his own. He now is just a carrier for the ideas of the farleft that would take away your freedoms, take away your guns, take away opportunity, take away america as we know it, and that is a dangerous proposition from joe biden. That is why we have got to reelect donald trump on november 3. Host lets go to nelson, who is calling from hollywood, florida, on the republican line. Nelson, good morning. Caller good morning. I would just like to point out al gore,he year 2000, the democrat candidate, did not accept the results of the theidential election, and state of florida had to recount its ballots three times. Pushing fors were yet another recount, and it took the United States Supreme Court a intervene in order to put stop to the attempt of the democrats, who were trying to steal that election. The hypocrisy of the Democratic Party continues to grow and grow and grow. I am 71. I left the Democratic Party in 1979, and it has only become worse with time. We have to put donald trump back in power. I did not vote for him in the year in 2016. I voted for gary johnson. I was a never trumper, but donald trump did a good job prior to covid, and he would do a good job again. Host go ahead and respond there, boris. Guest thank you so much. You are definitely the minority they are in hollywood, and thank you for your support. I will tell you, there is no question that President Trump is the leader that we need. You are totally right on that. And youre right about 2000. Al gore did not accept the election, and again, Hillary Clinton and the democrats did not accept the 2016. But President Trump is going to win on november 3. My guess is it will be joe biden coming up with wacky reasons for why he lost. Host lets get one more call in, and it is going to be kurt from brownsville, new jersey on the line. Kurt, good morning. Caller thank you for calling my li thank you for taking my call. Donald trump is the first republican i ever voted for. It is, i guess a comment, the democrats are the resistance, so how can they blame everybody else . They resist authority, that is obvious. And i haveed truth, been following this theme, you know, i am not that bright, but i watched, and the iowa caucuses, the democrats messed that up, and i was like, why, how could they do that . Because they were setting up the president ial election to be messed up, and they just want to trick us. Thanks for letting us talk. Host go ahead and respond grow quickly there, boris. Guest thanks for being supportive of the president. There is no two ways about it, democrat leadership has failed all over this country. Look at seattle, portland, new york. Look at the murders in michigan. These cities are up in flames and we cannot afford for that to be all of america, and that is what joe biden would bring. Folks, reelect donald trump on november 3. Thankwe would like to boris epshteyn, trump 2020 advisor, for being here. Thank you for your time. Guest thank you for having me. It was great. There is great admiration for the brilliance that pulses in silicon valley. I have toured a lot of the companies and it is so exciting to see what is being developed and what the future holds. I will be careful how i say this, but there is also an arrogance that comes with that incredible productivity and innovation that tends to downplay the effect that they people Public Policy and who are engaged in Public Policy. You are that good, you are that big, you are that innovative, sometimes you think you can discard public reaction or political reaction. Monday night at 8 00 eastern on the communicators, on cspan2. Washington journal continues. Host we are back with Christopher Buckley, who was here to talk about his new book, make russia great again. Good morning. Guest good morning. And good morning washington. Good morning america. It is morning in america. Host we will start with this basic question. You have been in political satire for a long time, but you left. Now you are returning with this book, make russia great again. Why this book, why now . Guest i needed the money. [laughter] this is my 19th book. Im hoping to make it to 20 before they close the lid. Some years ago i gave up political satire on the grounds that american politics had become sufficiently selfsatirizing. I didnt think it needed me, so i went away and wrote a couple of historical fictions, which i enjoyed. Got tired of hearing people say, why arent you writing about this . Are in a garden of low hanging fruits here. I thought, ok, lets give it a go. And this is the result. Make russia great again. Host tell us the basic premise of the book. We dont want to give anything away. Tell us the basic premise. Guest the basic premise is that a foe, or this is ,s we say these days, fake white house memoir by President Trumps seventh chief of staff. Bert. A nice guy named he was the food and beverage manager at maralago. He is the only one who will take this job. Head. In over his by,action is precipitated it turns out there is a computer in the basement of u. S. Cyber command at fort meade. Placid reflex. It is a doomsday device and is programmed to autonomously retaliate against any country that interferes with an american election. 2016 there was a bit of interference i moscow, not that the president seems to take that think that is a serious problem. Thethe computer, because u. S. Has not retaliated, the computer thinks that the president must have been neutralized somehow or removed from the chain of command. So it activates. And mr. Putin is holding a special election to make him president for life. By the way, i called that one because that happened two weeks ago. Placid reflex throws him out of office, he is defeated. By the head of the communist party of the, of russia. That is the premise. Now the white house staff, no, ciansc advisor, the head of are in full freak out because mr. Trump does not know about this and if he learns about this he is going to cancel the entire u. S. Intelligence take intelligence capability. There is a lot of Walking Around on eggshells. To mix the metaphor there is a dead mouse on the carpet of the oval office floor. Sorry for the long answer. I get so excited when people ask about my book. Host i understand that completely. Guest it is what i live for. Host talk to us about writing satire of a current administration. Whodo you represent people fiction, you are representing people who are alive right now in your book. How do you do that . Guest there is a disclaimer at the front that says, this is a work of satirical fiction. Finds a resemblance ofween themselves and any the characters in the book should be ashamed. So that is the disclaimer. Yeah, it is tricky. Or crossede last i 7e last t in a bar on march in asheville, North Carolina. That is when the book went to press, as we say. Four days later there was something called the coronavirus. But it ised that one, any satiristnow,. S probably doomed a satirist is like a dog chasing a car. He rarely catches up with that. That mymake no claim real than what is going on. Anyway, it is my attempt at rendering it through a different lens. I have been pleased by the reaction, because some people have said that in a way it is some of the them sharper nastiness of what we are going through. That pleases me. Host you bring up what was going to be my very next question. What is your response to people who say this is not the time for things like political satire, considering what the country is going through with the coronavirus . Considering tensions are being ratcheted up with china . I dont agree with that. A golden agee in of satire. Look at stephen colbert. He is brilliant every night. Seth meyers, saturday night , sarahlex baldwin cooper, this young lady has pioneered an entire new genre of satire with this brilliant lipsynch thing. I could go on. This is a we seem to be living in a satirical time. Laughter is a coping mechanism. Im certainly not laughing at covid. There are certain things that are, i think, out of bounds. He would be daring to attempt a comedy about the holocaust. Although, 25 years ago there was a brilliant movie that i think won the oscar called life is beautiful. , amazingly he managed. The plot recapitulate line, but it can be done. I think we all need a laugh precisely because we are going know,h a time of, you remember Dorothy Parkers great line, what fresh held is this . We get the newspapers and cspan bringing us a fresh, keeping serving of hell. Post gave me a very generous review of this book and the reviewer said that it was not so much shooting fish in a bucket as i was more like a circling a large pile of manure. For reasons i cant quite explain, i kind of liked that. If ever i get around to designing a coat of arms, i think that is going to be my coat of arms. Circling a cow pie. Not very elegant, perhaps, but for me it would work. Host i want to stick to that theme, first let me remind viewers they can join in on this conversation. Democrats, you call 202 7488000. Pelicans, your line is going to be 202 7488001. Is 202 nts, your line 7488002. Keep in mind, you can always text us at 202 7488003. We are always reading on social media, on twitter and on facebook. Christopher, my question was going to be, how easy i shouldnt assume easy how easy or difficult is satire even all of the things going on out of the white house and around the country today . Like you said, there seems to be a lot you can poke at. Easy in thisboth sense, as i said before, it is a garden of low hanging fruit. Easy pickings. At the same time, it presents its own challenges. Aroundam pussyfooting trying to say is, you have to do a well or it comes off as pale imitation of reality. Said sounds like, you know, chest beating, good for me i can do it well. Anyway, it presents that problem. I think you have to be on your toes. To be same time, it seems providing inspiration for a great range of talented people. I refer again to sarah cooper,hy think may emerge from this new,y of us emerge, as the talented kid on the block. Trump tonk she has mr. Thank for that. Anyway. I dont know if that answers your question. Every Political Party gets its own phone number to call at cspan . Host welcome to cspan. Guest what if you are a marxist . Dont they get a number . Host not quite yet, but we will see what we can do some time in the future. Guest it is a big task. Maybe the marxists, it will be calling on the democrat line. [laughter] host i assume this question is coming from some of our younger viewers, but several people have asked, are you related to willie matt buckley William F Buckley . I want you to talk about your father and what he would think. Guest you mean this guy . Of course, i much better looking, yes, we share dna. The reason i am much better looking is this lady, who was really good looking. That would be my mom. Yes, i am related and i am speaking to you from his old study, which is now my study. In fact, he passed just about in feet from where im sitting. Olds humbling to occupy his office. But i hope i have made it mine. Over there is a shelf of, containing all 57 books he wrote. As i say, i am up to 19. I dont think i stand much of a chance of catching him. Have onlyeve me, i done four so i am impressed with 19. Guest i sense you are younger than me. I cant see you. Host we want to talk about a john there, ok . Guest you are better looking too. Host what do you think he would think or say about the Trump Presidency or todays Republican Party . Dad, cspan wants to know what you think about trump and Republican Party. Sometimes the connection is a little slow. Way, in 2008. The that is why i am directing my question up there. Your question. Channeling your fathers ghost is a tricky business. Hamlet did that, and he saw how that turned out. Not good. Everyone was dead. So i dont know that i can speak for him. Putting a lot on me. Byhink you would be appalled various aspects of mr. Trump. The vulgarity, the coarseness. My father was a gentleman and he had a rather strict code of conduct. Nothing that i have seen in the last three and a half years remotely fits in, comports with that code of conduct. He would probably approve of some of the things mr. Trump conservatively, but i think esther trump does those things because he thinks it is pleasing to his base. Conservativetally on various points. I dont think mr. Trump has a conservative ideology, i dont think he has any ideology other than his own psychological needs. Isthat sense i think he generous, eral suis it means he has his own creation. Himnt see how you compare with any other president. Although he seems awfully fond of comparing himself to abraham lincoln. He will have to wait for the judgment of history on that. All of these books are by john echam. Nd me we will have to wait for his analysis of that in the future. Host lets let some of our viewers join in. We are going to start with jeffrey was calling from auburn, new york. Caller morning. I have a couple of jokes. I would like to start with a joke, but i have a serious point too. Thented to call in in previous Trump Campaign guy, but chris, i love satire. I have a knock knock. Host who is there . Caller donald j. Trump read trump. Host Donald J Trump who . Caller see how easily we will forget . Guest very good. Caller i have a serious point. I have a running bet with anybody flying donald j. Trump 2020 flag, make America Great again, or a mega hat. I have 20 for anyone that can show me a made in the usa tag and not a made in communist china tag. Also trumps ties, made in china. I come from a factory town. Guest sorry, i didnt mean to step on you. Of prompted a memory watching mr. Trump on the David Letterman show many years ago. I think he was on to promote his ties. Letterman reached across and said, may i . And turned the label and it said, made by slave labor in chengdu province. It was one of the few times i had seen mr. Trump abashed. Ironic, isnt it . I would like to finish with a joke, that i still have a serious point. Host quickly. Caller he ivanka trump has 23 new patents in china. I come from a factory town and our factories have been overstated by republican unit unionbusting. It seems the only union they do support is the police union and prison guard union. They are against the teachers unions. , the trump ties are made in communist china, not auburn, new york. We have a factory that is closing down. A factory formerly and it is owned by the chinese. How many republicans does it take screw in a lightbulb . Guest three. One to mix martinis. Reminisce about how good the old one was. Actually, answer is, how many republicans does it take to screw in a lightbulb . They dont screw light bulbs, they only know how to screw the poor. Guest [laughter] host lets keep going here. Guest you are very jest. At 9 00 on the sabbath day i am amazed, but i hadnt realized auburn was ground zero for such jollity. I congratulate you. I will be using those jokes. Host lets go to robert was calling from illinois. Caller it is indiana. Do we have a common show this morning . Show this morning . My uncle served this country, my relatives serve this country and you have an 80 on here that thinks it is he is funny writing books. You can sit and make jokes about trump. He is doing his job. Let them and be and do your job and the hell off the air. Is yourll, what response to that christopher . Guest what could one say but, thank you so much for joining the conversation. Somethingstopher, some people might not know is that you used to be a former white house speechwriter. He used to be a speechwriter for Vice President George H W Bush. When you see yourself today . Do you consider yourself a nevertrumper . Yes, just as mr. Bush did. George bush voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016. And some bush, i dont know if yeah, the bushes were never trumpers. Mr. Bush was everything i loved about the Republican Party. Next to my own dad, i esteemed him more than any other man. Well, my uncle jimmy buckley, who served as u. S. Senator for new york, i would put him on late that on that pedestal. These are good and decent men who were in it for all the right reasons. The right reasons was not them. It was the country. Trump, it is not. It is not about the country. That really ought to be obvious, even to the gentleman who just called in. It is about him. You know, i miss that. A Republican Senate that rentables g to principles, longheld, cherished principles rather than voting in the service of a cult of personality. I am sad about where we are right now. Can reallyw if we claw our way back to where we once were. Host going back to your book, once again, make russia great again. There are some characters in the book called evertrumpers. Who are they . Guest at one point there is a base, a subsection of the who call themselves evertrumpers. You remember mr. Trump said he could step out of the trump tower on fifth avenue and shoot someone and people would still vote for him . Aree people actually walking up and down fifth avenue with tshirts with targets on them saying, please mr. Trump, shoot me. They are volunteering to be shot. I think that would probably please mr. Trump. Host lets go back to our phone lines and talk to john. Guest do you have anymore more democrats from indiana . Host [laughter] guest put them on. Host lets talk to john who was calling from miami, florida. Good morning. Caller good morning. Know, two questions. What would be the definition of satire as it applies to donald, remdesivir mentioned , which is a very big miracle working drug against covid19. Could you expound upon that . Host guest answering you in reverse order, i dont know much about remdesivir, john. For im hoping and praying on this sunday morning is that these vaccines will be approved and will be effective. But i think we have to be cautiously optimistic. As to your question about satire great ur swift, the defined satire this way. Mirror, satire is that in which we see everyones flexion but our own. Reflection but our own. Host one of the questions i have is, a lot of our viewers are wondering why you think President Trump is fair game for satire and ridicule. What would be your answer to them . Guest why do i think an american president is a legitimate subject of satire . With all respect, are you kidding . Shouldnt a leader be an object of satire . If i could just into very gingerly seriousness satire is also a way of responding. Funny, what is also serious. It makes serious points. Nahnajust nanyang h, if it were it would not be worthwhile. If we in we engage in satire in america because of the First American first amendment. I wouldnt try when i do or what sarah cooper does, or stephen colbert, or seth meyers to, in say, turkey. I certainly would not do it in russia. I dont think i would do it in saudi arabia and there are other countries where it would probably not be a good career move. Satire in that sense is instructive and it is also a way of getting back. Satire is, i suppose, response of the powerless to power. Host we would push back against anyone who would say that satire of any sitting president is unpatriotic . Guest absolutely. I dont think that is a serious point. I think it is, if i may, i think it is an absurd point. Someone who asks that question, do they mean that one should reflexively treat any leader, however awful, with undiluted respect and she knew flexion . Ction . Ufle that is a slippery slope. You could end up looking like germany in 1933. Our phones go back to lines and talk to patrick who was calling from coffee springs, alabama on the republican line. Guest i had a feeling he was calling on the republican line. Hey, patrick. Caller good morning to you. So, mr. Buckley. You are a funny guy. The funny thing is, you are just full of yourself. I hear what you said. Well, you might be against donald trump and all in with bush. Bush was the warmonger and donald trump cleaned the deck ,ith your socalled republicans that your daddy and im a well, you seem to respect and admire. W bush aw is george h warmonger . Caller we could have had Osama Bin Laden real quick over italy afghanistan. In afghanistan. Guest you are mixing up your bushes. You are talking about george w. Bush, and i was not in favor of that war myself. Im happy to answer your question, but ask a coherent question. You are zigzagging all over the place. And if i may say, not making much sense. Caller you bring up george bush like he was some kind of great president. Guest he was a great president and i think he was a great american. Caller and so donald trump is not . Guest no, i think donald trump is a scoundrel. Going, letseep talk to carol who was calling from berlin, maryland on the democratic line. Guest bring me a democrat, please. [laughter] host carol, you are on the air. Caller i hope i got my timing right. It is such a pleasure to hear a quickwitted man make me laugh about this nightmare. I look forward to reading your book. Im so glad i turned the tv on. Feel, in some way, attached you because i worked for your uncle. I always thought of him as such a lovely, right, articulate and. I have nothing else to say, no complaints. And so happy to know that i can pick this book up and laugh because every morning i turn the tv on, i Blood Pressure goes up. I look at this as medicine and thank you. Guest im probably not supposed to make any medical claims about this book, carol, but Early Research is showing that reading this book will bring your Blood Pressure down significantly. And pay fully it price, it brings your Blood Pressure down even more. Host one of the things we havent talked about is what you think about the president s tweeting. It seems to be his favorite form of communication. Do you address this . Guest do i address it in the book . Host correct. Guest yes, he does some tweeting in the book, but i i dont go into a lot of his tweeting. It is nothing i come up with byway of a fictional trump tweet would outdo the real thing. Including this detail. When john lewis died last week, a great american, trump tweeted sent hisnd melania and he. His wife he cant even get his pronouns right. I wonder if the next president will give up tweeting. Becomesy joe biden president. Interesting question. Well future president s of the United States continue to tweet . I think it might good to take a break from that. To it is an effective form of communication, but perhaps go on a tweet diet and instead of at 2 30 a. M. , pot giving a tweet storm, confine themselves to stately and occasional tweets. Tweet genie is out of the bottle and there is probably no putting it back in. I wouldnt be surprised if someone is working on a satirical history of president ial tweets going back to george washington. That could be a very funny host are we hearing from you your next project . Guest no, im done. It says here, if i may read from ,he authors note on the flap attractively packaged and reasonably priced book, it says if enough people buy this book, buckley pledges to retire permanently from political satire. There is your incentive, america. Make this book a bestseller and i promise i will go away. And you wont have to watch me on cspan on sunday morning. Host just as we have been talking this morning, of course, the president has been tweeting as well. Coupleve i can pull up a of the tweets we have seen this morning. From thene that came president. Crazy nancy pelosi set i made a mistake when i band people from china from entering the u. S. In january. Lives were saved as she danced in the streets of chinatown. Biden agreed with her and soon admitted i was right one more tweet. The Trump Campaign has more enthusiasm than any campaign in the history of our country. Even more than 2016. Biden has none. The silent majority will speak on november 3. Fake suppression poles and fake news for not save radical left. Guest that you have it. I could not have put it any better myself. Thank you mr. President. It is wonderful that you opened and bid to us so frequently have us a glimpse inside. Give us a glimpse inside. I am on here to promote my book, but let me say a nice word or two about another Simon Schuster trumpthemed book. Mary trumps book, which i read over the weekend. Too much and never enough. She talks persuasively about how there is this cavernous hole inside mr. Trump and it is never filled. It is never enough. Hisaw that the first day of presidency. Been you have just taken the oath of office as president of the United States, how thrilling would that be . Would you find that thrilling . I would find it thrilling. Gingin minutes he is whin about the coverage of the size of his crowd. , as mary trump said, it is never enough. Bit nixonian. Kissingersand rick first volume of his white house memoirs. Historicon won a reelection in 1972, you will recall he got 49 states. The only ones who voted for mr. Mcgovern were massachusetts and the district of columbia. Nixon triumph, right . What does he do . He has his chief of staff make everyone in the white house sign a Resignation Letter that he might act on. Then he seals himself off from the american public. Holes up. Mr. Kissinger writes about that. Moment where he could have ingrained himself in americas eyes, he could have engraved himself on americas heart, he instead sealed himself off from america. There was something poignant about that. It wasnt enough. Here he had one this incredible bylection and i was struck the similarities between that and mr. Trump, for whom nothing is ever enough. In nixons case, perhaps with the benefit of the intervening years it seems now poignant. Remotelycurrently not poignant in the case of mr. Trump. I would use another word, pathetic. Host lets go back to our phone lines and go to dan who was calling from new york city, new york on the independent line. Caller hey, chris. Longstanding fan of yours. Read most of your books. I noticed you are not j band of derivative sequels, but not a fan of derivative sequels, but if youre book is a bestseller you have an opportunity for a trilogy here. There is low hanging fruit in china, north korea, be even he ran. Iran. Guest being a loyal fan you will have possibly read my thethemed novel titled puppies, dont they . Lobbyist novel about a for the Defense Industry seeks to increase sales by fomenting antichinese sentiment in america. Bit got a bit of ahead of that curveball. Andsound like a fairly fine refined person. You, i am very glad that called. Although i think you are taking time away with this phone call from republicans in indiana and miami. Please dont stay on too long. Host i have a question for you, chris. You write this book in the form of a white house memoir. Memoirsve been so many that have come out of the white house, going all the way back to president James Madisons administration, where one of his former slaves wrote his memoir from his time inside the white house. What is the attraction for us looking inside the innerworkings of this white house or any white house . Guest the english template title would be what the butler saw. Are kiss andemoirs tell books. There is a wide range of kiss and tell. There is the Henry Kissinger monumental, magisterial kind of memoir that tells you, informs you about policy and gives you anecdotes of Human Interest to provide those glimpses. One of the most remarkable white house memoirs that i have read, and i discussed this in a piece in yesterdays wall street journal, and it is a book probably not many people know about by a woman named elizabeth who was born a slave. For four years she was Mary Todd Lincolns dressmaker. She was, of course, lack. Black. Essentially Mary Todd Lincolns closest friend. A confidant. Glimpses into the and marythe abraham todd lincoln menage that no one else could provide. Son has died of diphtheria and she is hysterical, as any mother would be, Mary Todd Lincoln was really, really hysterical. Lincoln, in an attempt to calm her down takes her by the hand and walks her to a window and points to a building. It is an insane asylum. He says, other, if you keep up this way youre going to have to send you there. Is a chilling moment. Sorkin mustaaron have used that italy is marvelous movie about lincoln. The other details she gives us was aat misses lincoln spendthrift. She bought stuff that she didnt really need on credit. What stores going to insist on the first lady of the United States pay . This is one of the reasons she persuaded lincoln at one point who was thinking of not running for reelection. You know, the war was going badly. Sonad just had his beloved guy. Run forates for him to reelection. For this reason. President ,pped being all of those creditors would come calling. At that point she had racked up 27,000 of debt. He, of course, ran for election. Killed, the he is debt is 70,000. That is over 1 million in contemporary dollars. Theabeth writes that president was spared ever hearing about this. He did not know about it. Perhaps, the only happy consequence of his assassination. Literature in white house memoirs. Certainly in that house memoir. Then there are white house memoirs that are, frankly, bitchy and scoresettling, but which make for delicious reading. Nixonsone from one of top aides. You recall the pentagon papers leak. The secret history of the vietnam war. It was a great scandal. Hoover, thenjacob head of the fbi, to investigate daniel ellsworth. Learned, lsberg, we Daniel Ellsbergs fatherinlaw was a toy manufacturer who, at christmas time, would distribute toys free of charge to the children of fbi agents. Hoover loved that. So he dragged his heels. And kept coming up with excuses not to investigate daniel ellsberg. At which point, nixon turned to eagle crow, one of his staffers, and told him to have your people handle it. He hires E Howard Hunt and gordon liddy. And that turned out really well. Delicious bits in white house memoirs. Even delicious bits in the fictionalized memoirs. Can you see it . Host i wont let our viewers know that if they want to hear more from Christopher Buckley on white house memoirs, he has an article in the wall street journal talking about what he considers five best wall street memoirs. You can see the five he is talking about. He has talked about two. Lets see if we can get a few more colors in. Callers in. Harold, good morning. Caller good morning. Great to be on this comedy show. Gorbachev is the one who made russia. Thank god he made russia great again. Thank god that donald trump made America Great again. He is the third party. Long before he even ran for president , kratz decided democrats decided they did not want Hillary Clinton in the white house, and for good reason. She wants open borders from the tip of south america to alaska. She is a danger. , people decided even before donald trump was the candidate that no way should ,illary clinton and democrats and especially Democrat Union members, they are the ones who, even to this day, people are afraid to say that they are voting for donald trump. My son in our house, put out a trump flag. I am happy he did. People are maybe going to burn your house down, and that is how serious it is in this country. Host go ahead and respond, christopher. Guest if the gentleman thinks that mr. Trump has made America Great again, all i can say is we probably have different editions of great. Definitions of great. 2016 the the 2016 republican primary process, there were 17 republican candidates to choose from. You know, there was always a choice. But the Republican Party went mr. Trump. , i think has killed the Republican Party. I think the Republican Party, as i said a little earlier, sorry to repeat myself, i think the Republican Party as we once knew it is over. I dont know if it will ever come back. Rebuild the best way to a responsible, nonangry, nonbittere Republican Party would be to elect a democrat this november. Host fred, good morning. Caller hello. I want to say that i am 64 years old africanamerican male physician and i will admit i have not read esther buckleys book. I wonder if he is related to William F Buckley, but i lived through the assassination of john f. Kennedy, Martin Luther have alsoolm x, and i lived through the administrations of Ronald Reagan and irancontra, and also bush and taking us down into the worst economic slump weve had in and the hate that is spe wed about obama. Now we have trump. Thosethese folk wearing red hats, tricking that red koolaid trump is spewing, but i find it offensive that the gop has allowed this machine to work. And now we have coronavirus. I know there has been questions about the election in 2016 and the intervention of the russians. Now this election is coming around, what is that trump can do at this point . I see him changing his stripes about Wearing Masks. They were pushing that false agenda about hydroxychloroquine and disappear. Remdesivir. What about this vaccine that they are pushing, and couldnt be pushed in a way that is actually a placebo and the public buys into it just before the election, just in time to say, im going to vote for trump because he found a new vaccine. Do you think the gop and america could do in that way . Duped in that way . Guest you are giving me the outline for a new novel here. Which im not going to write, but i think the answer is, yes. Probablyans have permanently corrupted our political discourse in this country. Not by necessarily asserting their truth, but by making it impossible to assert any truth. Peed inlly they have our drinking water. The russian saying is, nothing is real and everything is possible. , that is in the air now that we breathe. Americans can no longer trust each other because they opened up their screen and they see some outrageous story and it is like, do you remember that game telephone where you whisper something and the next person passes it on and you see what that sentence is by the time it has gone through 12 people . Large andlephone writ in hell. That, unfortunately, is where we are. Yes, i am William F Buckleys sun. Son. He was a very devout catholic. Ae saying was, despair is mortal sin. We must not spare. I thank you. Host we would like to thank Christopher Buckley, author of make russia great again. Q. So much for spending your sunday morning with us.
