Our primary mission is to welcome our combat fallen and respond to mass fatalities. When we are notified there is a combat fatality, that gets the gears in motion at Dover Air Force base. Within 36 to 48 hours our soldiers, sailors and marines, there remains are brought back to Dover Air Force base. Within that small time period, a lot of notifications have to be done by the services to the family members. We have to get the family members here to witness the transfer of their loved one back to american soil. There is a lot going on when we prepare to their arrival. A dignified transfer is not a ceremony. It is a Solemn Movement where we pay respects with dignity and respect to those fallen. They come off an aircraft in a transfer case, and the family is here to witness the return of their loved one to american soil. The process involves a general officer, along with an Honor Guard Team that will take that transfer case off the aircraft and place it into a vehicle that takes the fallen to our mortuary. The process is almost exactly the same, there are small nuances depending on the honor guard for each service, but it is generally the same. For the families, this is where reality hits home. If you can imagine 24 to 48 hours ago the family received a knock on the door and got the worst news of their life. They come to over air force base to witness the return of their loved one. It can be very emotional, it is heart wrenching and humbling. The mortuary has been at dover since the 1950s. We have had 30,000 american soldiers, sailors, marines returned to Dover Air Force base from various conflicts around the world. There is always a dignified transfer of some sort, and it becamecarry, more open to the public in 2009. We allowed media and the families to travel to dover at government expense to witness the return of their loved ones. Prior to that, families could come to dover at their own expense. 15 of the time families would arrive at Dover Air Force base. With the change and allowing families to travel a government expense, we are at 83 of families who come to Dover Air Force base to witness a dignified transfer. Once we receive from the medical examiner, we take those remains through a process, we am balm them, get them dressed and shipped home as soon as we can. Our primary mission at dover, we have been asked by the inernment to take part dignified transfers of other individuals who may have lost their lives.
