The man in texas, demon possessed. Until they stop using terms like Mental Illness we are at a dangerous moment and things are going to intensify. You are going to see pure hate and evil. Host why not treat this as a Mental Illness issue . Caller you cannot medicate a demon possessed person. This guy in new york, he was in a cult. All these people, it is pure hate. Until people realize it, you dont know what we are dealing with, it is a spiritual war. Everybody wants to look at the physical. It is a spiritual problem. Host eric in rhode island, you are up. Caller unfortunately, i think it is going to increase as i told your screener and the reason why as the population gets more diverse, people get scared and in particular, me. I am a white caucasian german ancestry lead our the population growth in the United States in the beginning. That is not the case anymore. Populations get more scared because they become more diverse. I want to make one final point. Host are you currently scared for your own situation, is that what you are trying to say . Caller absolutely not. Host i just wanted to clarify that. Caller absolutely not. I am all set. I want to make one final point. In 1922, there was a chinese man who said this. There is the yellow race and the white race. All the yellow races are feeble and stupid. Check it out and we are trying to rule the world. Host archer in cincinnati, ohio. Caller hi. Host are you there . Caller marcia, i am here. Host marcia, i am sorry. Good morning. Caller i am interested in these statistics you put up. And adid not seem to be mention of the hate crimes against africanamericans done by police. I think it is important to moree the police do shooting than necessary. Makes you say that . What gives you that confidence of saying that . I know a young man in cincinnati murdered by a Police Officer. He was not even a Police Officer , he was employed by the university offcampus. He killed a young guy for not having a front license plate on his car. Of people do not have license plates and in texas, they are all over the place. Host lets hear from bill in new york, you are next up, good morning. Morning, pedro. Happy new year to everyone. Suggested, the last caller, is quite on point. The reason i say this is because the fpi came out with that report that said many of our organizations have been infiltrated by white supremacist racists. Host she was using one instance to base a total point a total point, to be fair. Caller i get where she is coming from, because if you have Police Officers doing these crimes also, they should also be a possible part of that data collected. Host to the larger issue of hate crimes and domestic terrorism, what do you want to add . Caller i think somebody said on the show the other day, a hate i i may do something a name as i do it, that doesnt mean i hate that whole population of people. We have to be careful with this. I want to say one more thing. I do believe the number one problem we have in our Society Worldwide is racism. And really injustice and if you look around the world, the payingwho are darker are a heavier penalty than anyone else. Host the Justice Department offers this definition when it comes to domestic terrorism saying according to the fbi, the website saying domestic terrorism is violent criminal acts committed by individuals and or groups to further ideological goals stemming from j in wisconsin, hello. Thank you forr cspan. Individual that is just a simple, thank you for cspan. Hear from chris wray, the fbi director testifying on capitol hill, the topic he was questioned on was the topic of domestic terrorism. [video clip] can you share with the committee the challenges you had with your agency in addressing domestic terrorism because there definition issues that continue to be a challenge from what i understand. Are think what you referring to, which we talked about a little bit in the past, there is not currently a domestic terrorism offense as such in the same way there is on the International Terrorism side a Material Support to foreign terrorist organizations. Having said that, we tackle the domestic threat through a wide variety of tools, explosive charges, gun charges, state and local charges, hate charges, so we use a lot of different tools to go after it and our folks have been resourceful with partners in making sure we dont let anybody get away with it. We had i think 107 domestic terrorism arrests in fiscal year 2019, which is about the same number as our International Terrorism arrests. Host the wall street journal takes a look at the incident in texas, a story saying it is gun advocates seeing lessons from the texas shooting that took place saying the incident was captured in vivid livestream video showing parishioners reaching for weapons circulating on social media with conservatives pointing to it as evidence that the new law works. We now have a situation where someone saved a lot of people. The founder of the Second Amendment foundation, some officials in texas and gun control advocates disagreed. Beto orourke tweeted on sunday clearly what we are doing in texas and in this country when it comes to guns are not working. The church identify the parishioners that sprang into actions, jack wilson, the former owner of a local gun range. Next up, carol, union city, california. Caller hello. Am i on . Host yes, you are on. Go ahead. Caller i am so upset with all these dumb labels and this racist business. When someone calls me racist. I am supposed to be white, but i am kind of tan. That . You have to do ,hen i get called racist finally, i am going to say i am racist, i only help people in the human race. Host to the larger issue of hate crimes and domestic terrorism. We have seen it play out in the last week or so. What do you think about the larger situation . Is so silly to be hateful in all of that. I think there is a group of people trying to divide all of us by putting all these labels on us. Joe in new jersey, good morning. Caller i just want to say one little thing. Did not haveedia this thing for republicans because they keep putting down saying the president is racist andeverything else democrats are the ones causing this mess because they are creating this hate because they say they hate the president , they hate this. Host how does the larger issue of hate crimes turn into a political issue, then . Caller the newspaper creates it. They just keep on putting out this stuff about everything the president is doing is bad, it is no good, they do this wrong, the same way now with the embassy being attacked, they are blaming that on the president. They are putting the blame on things they should not be. They should be together, not separate. The according to the fbi, statistics, which you can find forhe website, justice. Gov 2018, saying Law Enforcement agencies may specify the location of offense as one of 46 location designations adding that most hate crime incidents, 9 ared in or little over 9 at schools and colleges. A little over 5 at parking lots and garages. Churches, synagogues, loanes, and mosques and locations, a little over 11 per 11 . Nancy in texas, you are next up. To disagreeuld like with all the previous callers. It doesnt matter where we come from, this is a melting pot. The United States is the only country in the world that is a melting pot. We come from all different countries. Some are born natives, some are migrate some migrate. And ani am 48 years old american. I am not a mexicanamerican. I am not a texmex american. I am in american. The larger issue of hate crimes and domestic terrorism, what do you think of that . Caller i believe when you start taking the labels off of people and realize this is america and we need to stop looking at different groups and separating the groups. Host how does taking the labels off change anything . Caller it changes a lot because when we view the country as a whole, we are all americans. When you Start Holding people accountable for their behavior how do we hold them accountable . They do bad things, we discipline them. We find a way a just and fair way of disciplining them. Host it was earlier this week the new York Governor Andrew Cuomo talking about the rise of antisemitism, hate crimes in the United States after the incident at the hanukkah party. [video clip] meets ignorance. Time inan intolerant this country. Exploding. R, hatred it is an american cancer in the body politic. It literally turns one cell in we body against others and have seen it here in the state of new york. This is about the 13th incident ,f antisemitism in 13 weeks comes during a period of high holidays for the jewish people. Illegal. Olerant, it is at the end of the day, it is not just about words, it is about action and we have seen enough violencerk, this is spurred by hate, Mass Violence and i consider this an act of domestic terrorism, lets call. T what this is these people arent domestic terrorists and the law should reflect that. It should be punished as if it is an act of terrorism. Host here is how you can let us know, 2027488000 in the eastern and central time zones. 2027488001 in the mountain and pacific time zones and if you are a member of Law Enforcement, 2027488002. In the New York Times this morning, an oped by mitchell silver, a former new york Police Official associated as the director of Security Initiative joint program, how to combat antisemitic violence. As a former director of intelligence at the new york police department, i can tell you deterrent is crucial. In recent days, the office is committed to deploying extra Law Enforcement resources in endangered communities, this is a good start. Increase police patrols, the establishment of fixed posts and should be officers employed. Removing these resources after a short time has proved to be ineffective and incidents return as patrols leave. Recent antisemitic attacks are committed with by people with a history of psychiatric problems. Rather than being released immediately, those arrested should be evaluated to determine whether intervention is necessary. He does at a point saying when appropriate, and assailant should face jail time and a message that hate crimes will not go unpunished. In new york, we will hear from john, hello. Caller i get confused when you label a crime as a hate crime when you have a young kid, 17 or 18 go into a church and shoot people and then you have a crime that happened in new york city with a man wielding a machete and he chops people up and the started saying that was a case of Mental Illness and then you had this thing with the Police Officers in texas where another man went down there and his mission was to go down to shoot white Police Officers and that was not a hate crime that was a postwar syndrome issue he had. I think a lot of these labels are really used for statistic purposes only and you read the statistics at the beginning to prove points and you can take numbers and put labels on just about anything to get your point across. To me, call it what you want. These people that do these things are mentally ill, that is true, that is a true fact. Some people are doing it with the motive of hate. That is true. It is a hard one to argue. Both of these facts and labels are true, but i think the purpose they are being used for, that is where i think people that are supposed to be sane use these statistics i think they are the ones that really are host selfish such as what . Caller like the crime in new york city, they are coming across the media now this guy suffered from Mental Illness and they are setting him up like the guy was a victim because nobody paid attention and addressed his Mental Illness. You have a crime where you have a 17yearold kid go out and do something so heinous and you say this was a hate crime. Apply one label to all those instances . Is that what you are saying . Caller when somebody goes out callills somebody, if you that a hate crime, i would put that acrosstheboard. I dont care what color they are, i dont care what religion they are. I dont care how old they are, how young they are. I will call it a hate crime, i will agree with you there. The statistics come from the fbi, was getting an elaborate on your point. Karen in indiana, you are next up, hi. Caller thank you so much for washington journal, i love hearing from the people. The voters, and i love hearing about their opinions and ideas. I have one i think is important. I studied for many years, the america has been skewed by our tax base. If we would tax everyone equally and they did not feel disparity of income, of expenses and that kind of thing, they are going to have a lot more selfrespect and ability to go forward. Incomepeople by categories and if we do that, we are taxing the middle class. When i was working, i was paying 28 of my income to the government and i dont mind that because i like having Unemployment Insurance and Social Security. I am living on Social Security now. Are you saying these instances we see play out, saying in march, there are larger ties to Economic Issues . Is that what you are saying . Absolutely, everything starting to deteriorate has to notith us not tax taxing people dollars. Host what led you to start thinking that way . Ler the rich are able to i was abless to hide income based on beentions and so that has 30 years ago. I understand we have to have taxes to pay for the things we want and i think the people overall want health insurance. I can see somebody absolutely going berserk and shooting people because they have access , because they have bills that are absolutely tearing them apart in terms of health. Givingaren in indiana her thoughts. From our text service, this is nathaniel. I believe a lot of the hate crime has to do with changing demographics. No longer a predominately europeanamerican country. Been in pennsylvania, i am concerned with the move toward hatred of Law Enforcement. We cannot forget the work and sacrifices made by men and women in blue. Chicago a retired Chicago Police Department Person saying i think police do most of the shooting it only seems that way because those cases are more highprofile. Most often white males who feel entitled to more than they cap got and those who believe they should get any women they want. That is some of the people giving us texts. You are welcome to do the same. 2027488003 is how you do that and all we ask is you include your namecity and state. We will hear and ask from david in toddNorth Carolina. Go ahead. Caller we have lost three Community People to gun violence. It is weird because it happened at the same address. We have a language problem describing some of these terroristic techniques and no repercussions as residents other than these lashing outs we see across the nation to government infringement discretion of the county level that the government refuses to rein in. I cannot find the language to compel my government to defend me against the discretion of the local judiciary that gives sanctuary status to human traffickers to entrap High School College kids. If you are not going to school to get grant money, you are going to prison to get grant money for Government Employees on the local level and the federal government standing by letting them great hate in this nation. Host we will go to bert in georgia, good morning. I think the problem if these people are mentally ill is the policies the government has tort mentally ill person. I have a person in my family mentally ill and she is having. O be incarcerated right now she gets off of her medication and she will not abide by the laws. She goes to jail for petty crimes such as shoplifting, drinking, not taking her medication like she is supposed to. They call me a lot and ask where she is at and everything. I dont know, i am not a professional. I have my own problems to take care of my wife, i cannot take care of my sister, that is why we turned her over to professionals in the government to help her and they seem to take her to court, she goes to court and the judge says we will take you on board order to do your medicine and when she gets off medicine, she is highly schizophrenic and bipolar. She goes but assert like most crazy people berserk like most crazy people do. Host we will continue on this topic of hate crimes, domestic terrorism. For eastern88000 and central time zones. 2027488001 for the mountain and pacific time zones and if you are a member of Law Enforcement, 2027488002. A couple of pieces of proposed legislation on this topic on capitol hill as well, the domestic terrorism prevention act of 2019 sponsored by Richard Durbin from illinois. It would direct the fbi, Justice Department, and department of Homeland Security to prepare an annual report on domestic terrorism. There is also the domestic terrorism penalties act. Texas as well as henry cuellar, democrat from texas saying it changes the penal code to prosecute domestic terrorism cases the same as International Terrorism crimes. We will hear next from robert in indiana. Hello . I thought you said illinois. I dont know where to start. It tells you in the bible to obey the laws of the land and the laws of god. What our country has done has taken gods laws out of this country and put their own laws in and that is why we have the hatred. Christ came back today and people were given a choice who to kill, him or a murderer, they would pick christ again because we are in the same days when christ was crucified. This country is nothing but hatred right now because of the laws they are trying to put through. They have taken god out of it. Host peter is next in california, hello. Peter from san jose, good morning. One more time for peter in san jose. Are you there . Kenneth, tampa, florida. Good morning. Caller good morning and happy new year. Host if you are on, go ahead. Caller in my opinion, when it comes to hate crimes and domestic policy, i have called a few times and at the end of the day, it seems like no one wants theess the effect riddling fect of ridlin. Host why do you link one drug to the larger crimes . Caller i make the connection i am a tired military wants whoa commander had some very young kids. These were children, young kids. I think these girls were like 5 and 4 and they used to run around in the office and he lin andive them rid they would home right down. Calm right down. How can you give children a brain altering drug at a young age and their brains were developing and going on and that is how i try and think what is the effect of that on those young, developing minds back then . Host miles is next in new jersey. Good morning. Caller good morning. There are two differences between hate crime and domestic. Hate is talk. Taught. As a kid, you are not born knowing how to hate. Terrorist stuff, i think that is coming from our country going over there telling them how to live. They look at it as you trying to tell them how to live their life. Host better parenting reduces these types of crimes, is that the case you are making . Caller exactly. When you go to the playground, you see all different color kids having fun and playing and who are the ones doing the arguing . It is the parents calling each other names and kids listen to that. They hear that. Sitting there hearing that, he will repeat that. Then they keep going and going. As far as the police department, we trust the police, but the problem is when they see bad cops, they keep their mouth shut and that is why they make people dislike or distrust them. When you know you have bad cops doing wrong and you keep your mouth shut, you are not better than they are. How do you expect us to think you have our back when you turn around and see a cop do wrong and cover it up . Host later in the program, we will hear from adam wilson, the author of the book called tactical reload and a Police Sergeant in North Carolina to talk about topics of Community Relations and policing overall. Journal,ll street myron magnate the author of the book Clarence Thomas and the lost constitution has a piece taking a look at the topic of hate crimes, only a step away from thought crime. Designating an offense criminalizes not the action, but the idea that propels it. Here we are about to step away from the crime George Orwell described in 1984. Do you have a faculty of reason that allows you to distinguish right from wrong . Did you intend to do the crime you committed . James madison repeatedly insisted you have freedom of conscious, you can believe whatever you want however politically incorrect, especially since the days of Political Correctness may be deemed to any. Joe is next in covington, virginia. Caller good morning. How to fix it, but it is Family Structure, mental hollywood, and the rhetoric in the democratic party. How to fix it, i have no clue. Host with the list you gave, what is top on that list . Caller probably Family Structure. Like the gentleman was talking before me. Family breaks down, kids learn from their parents, there is Mental Illness associated with the family, of course, and that leads to drugs, tv, it is horrendous for most kids to watch the shows on tv. Hollywood to movies, it all comes down mainly to the Family Structure and lack of religious upbringing. Host you say you dont know how to fix it, but you found a list of the problems. You say there is no solution to the list . Caller there will always be evil and good and i think the family has just gone away, the Family Structure. You have to bring that back. I think that would aid in a lot of hate crimes and domestic terrorism. Host there was a report by brian leven out of the university of california, a recent report taking a look at the rise in hate crimes and came to some conclusions. Saying data in the report reflects several trends, that tribalismescalating widely shared across a grouping of people. More people are coming into contact with each other right at a time where fearful stereotypes are becoming the kindling for violent behavior. That is from that report out of the university of california. Another take on the topic of hate groups and where they meet and associate was on the internet and the topic of that came up in a recent hearing with mark zuckerberg, the ceo of facebook. [video clip] why havent you stopped hate groups from using the events page . Area that i think is very important and that i take very seriously. It is very hard to police every instance of this and a lot of the content in the stories you are talking about i would condemn and this is not the type of thing i want on any of our platforms and i am committed to make sure we continue to invest more and do a better job here. We are not perfect. We make a lot of mistakes. People share across our services more than one billion pieces of content a day. Even if we make mistakes on a small percent, that is a lot of mistakes. Things we take down that should not be taken down and things we miss and leave up that we should have gotten to. This is a constant effort to do better. As the technology improves, the state of ai to be able to identify Different Things is so much better than it was five reallygo, but this is hard stuff. If you assume, for example, that the photo you are saying would have been against policies, even within that, we have nuances in policies, you might be able to share it if you are condemning it. If there is some sort of racist attack, you would want people to be able to share a video condemning it, but you would not want people to share an attack glorifying it. That ends up being nuanced linguistic analysis. We operate in more than 100 countries around the world and this has been one of the areas hard to execute. We are improving and this is an area i take very seriously. Gordonext, we hear from in wisconsin. Good morning. Caller the last few callers were talking about the Family Structure and stuff, that is my same emphasis. I was born in the 1950s and grew up in the 1960s and watched the riots and everything going on and our political leaders being assassinated. I was a little kid sitting there watching with my mother and father. I never heard my mother and say anything wrong religion, odys race, or you should hate somebody because of this and that. I believe it is with the upbringing. People learn that from who they are around growing up. I did not even know there was anything wrong with races until i became a teenager living out west with my older brother and had some black friends and they always came down to my brothers house, which was a mixed neighborhood and i said, why can i come to your neighborhood and play and they said, you cannot walk into our neighborhood, we will bring you over until the neighborhood gets to know you are with us and then it will be ok. I did not understand that. I just did not understand the difference between hate and race and religion and until i got older. Host Family Dynamics versus Something Like Mental Illness or other things associated with these type of crimes . Is a mentalink it illness. Why would you want to go into a private residency where people are celebrating a religious holiday and start stabbing people . Tell me there is not something mentally wrong with that person . Why would you do that just because they are jewish . Host would you say that goes back to something they learned as a child or Family Structure . Caller i think it is a lack of Family Structure. It would be like me growing up the way i did and all of a sudden turning kids against people of religion or color. Even though i have associates and friends that use racial slurs, i dont believe in that and i would never take over their train of thought. That is up to me. Crimes that the Justice Department labels as hate crimes to share with you, the violent interference with federally protected rights act. It makes it a crime to willfully interfere with any person because of race, color, religion, or National Origin and because the person is participating in a publicly activity or helping another person to do so and there is the conspiracy against rights, which makes it unlawful for 2 or more portions persons to intimidate a person in a state, territory or district in the free exercise or enjoyment of any right or privilege secured to him or her by the constitution in the laws of the United States. In total, about 5 loss particularly relating to hate crimes. If you want to get a better definition of what they mean and how they are applied, go to the justice private website and type in hate crime laws and the fbi or Justice Department and you will get a listing for how to find that. Able from texas, good morning. Caller good morning. I am from the city hated on from someone 900 miles away who decided to drive because he had a mantra and believed that mantra and said my type of human this countryghting and needed to be eliminated and all kinds of stuff. Once you fill a mind, whether it is a child or teenager or adult or whatever with certain interesting things and then enabling by a Top Administration of certain things where it clicks in people that they are going to go do something about it as all the incidents that have happened in this country legally lately indicate, it is outright hate. Our city does not do things like that. Someone came from out of our city and the parade of craziness that happened when the memorial was forming of people still coming and talking about race and stuff even while people were urning the death was horrible. This and the effects of are still resonating, it was back in august . Caller is it still resonating . Of course it is. As a society, you use symbols or dople get together and paintings and that stuff. They are trying to calm things down. , people of it is over have got to live and remember that all of a sudden who is behind me . Who is next to me . Are they going to tell me something . Thisr as the family unit, country, our government right now, they dont give a damn about families. Look at what they are doing on the border, they are separating families. There are a bunch of kids we are taking away from their parents. This country does not want to respect and keep the family unit the same. Host we have set aside a line for Law Enforcement officers, 2027488002 if you want to give input. And washington, d. C. Who identifies as a member of Law Enforcement. Caller there is no difference between domestic International Terrorism. The only slight difference is International Terrorism is more policy related in regards to politics because the United States instigates more dissension in other countries throughout the world than any other country. That is why we have cia, it is not just information gathering, it is to instigate. As far as domestic terrorism, they did not add that to the. Atriot act until years later unfortunately, there is no crime for hating. You can hate anyone you want. Host what form of Law Enforcement do you serve in . Caller i am a detective right now for police in d. C. Host what does it mean when you have to take a look at these type of crimes . Separate myve to personal cell from my profession. I cannot mix the two. I am supposed to be a professional, it is my job. As a person of color in this country, i have been that longer than i have been in the uniform and i will be that way beyond. In the instances i have had, they are treated differently. Some are treated based on sexual preference or direct hate towards somebody for their race. I guess my point being terrorism is to coerce someone or place someone in fear. If you are robbed tomorrow although someone may not define it as a terrorist act, it has all the same principles of a terrorist act by simply using you ino remove or place fear. I guess it depends who you ask, but the United States of america has always instigated this type of madness, it is in the laws, the amendments. Someone is told they have rights even today, you have a lot of gople that will not go to to his graves and memorials and shoot at it and do other things and have burning crosses or whatever the case might be. Host we showed you some of the legislation from senator durbin, this is the response to it from agents association. Make domestic terrorism a federal crime helping ensure fbi agent have the best tools to fight domestic terrorism. Domestic terrorism is a threat to the American People and a threat to our democracy. And affecte government policy and should be protected regardless of the ideology behind them. That was from the republican andrew weber and cuellar. You can read at the website about the statement. West virginia in falling waters, we will hear from dan, next up. Caller hi. Talkersg to all the that were talking before i was waiting, seems like everybody has valid points. Also, these laws seem to be for punishment mostly and not a lot of prevention. I think a lot of times, too, access to guns has a lot to do with this because you see a lot of these people, they seem to be either mentally ill or disaffected by the economy, you dont see a lot of people with good jobs doing this, that is pretty much my comment, thank you for listening. Host as a preventive act, you would change gun laws first or other things first . Where would you go . Caller common sense gun stuff, better background checks, less availability for people like , increase for ar15s the age at least until 21. Handguns, the availability of handguns. I went to a gun show in virginia recently and they had mentioned that just over a threeday weekend, over 6000 guns were sold. That seems like a very excessive bruce group of people and the population of that show was the true crosssection of america was surprised because prior to that, when you went to gun shows, it was mostly older people. Now it seems like it fit the whole crosssection of america. It is getting to a point where guns are culture. You have to look at the legacies of these guns. They have lives unto themselves. What happens when people die . What happens to these guns and where do they go . Host thomas is next, a member of Law Enforcement, good morning. Caller good morning. I am a senior military officer that is a psychotherapist. I did say that when i called in. I think one aspect is being missed and if i could this is also having lived in israel, so i am a christian. Following world war 2, they studied the minds extensively for germans looking for a gene that would cause them to be so jews. Nt toward they were on a dangerous people take lives because they feel accidentally threatened. I am not saying that is justified, but if you take a look at individuals often devoid of emotion, they take actions because they seem like the best idea to preserve whatever they believe in. I agree with the previous caller that there is a brave new aspect brave new world aspect of saying someone was riddled by hate. Regarding prevention thanks for your patience listening, i believe people are spiritually bankrupt and my argument would the secularist human i think they are spiritually bankrupt. Hate crime, that is a dangerous slope. 1 that is thomas host that is thomas, a member of the military in background psychotherapy giving his opinion. Horace up next in arizona. Caller good morning and happy new year. Host thank you. Caller i believe this is purely based upon hatred and privilege. Yound it kind of funny if tie the hate crimes with the different types of law in this country. Cracksay there was a epidemic in the black community, they deemed that as a crime. When it comes to the opioid epidemic, it is a Mental Illness, a health issue. It seems whenever we have a mass shooting, we know these are majority white males between of a certain age, they will try to classify it as a Mental Illness issue, but if it is another race, they are motivated by something else, hatred or whatever. I think the last caller hit it on the head, this is a spiritual issue, the country is spiritually bankrupt and we are fueling this through the president trying to go back to a time in our history when White Supremacy was the way to be. We see a backlash from obama in the White Community and President Trump has emboldened them, this hatred based upon fear and privilege as one caller said, inalienable rights. Host naomi is next in arkansas, go ahead. As the caller said, yes, it has been White Privilege over the years. White, male privilege. Thesek did many of goodems and denied People School systems, Good Health Systems and denied them jobs no matter what type of education they had. Host other people have mentioned Mental Illness. Other people mention Family Structures. Why not tie it to one of those . Get a job,you cannot the family divides and many so it the family divides to raise theother sons and so forth about that. Host caroline, good morning. Waser what i wanted to say if they were able to do a psych exam before they leave the sixth grade and then when they leave the eighth grade they could compare the two and then when a child leaves high school, if they compare the third psych exam, they would know who and what they were letting out into the world and it might help them to understand what these people are actually doing or thinking. Host why target those grade groups . Ler when you go through you go through kindergarten and the sixth grade and you are developing and then when you get into the seventh and eighth grade, you are learning your with. And then when you get into high school, you have all these different groups of people, and it might help to do some kind of psych exam before they leave each of those groups so that they can compare the three and find out how the child has evolved or has not evolved. Host wouldnt there be civil and privacy issues for some sort of mandatory psych exam on those age groups . Theer if it is part of school curriculum, i would not think so. If they put it into the school curriculum, it is just like they used to have to have you used to have to have an exercise thing before for president or whatever. When i went to school, you had to have an exercise group, and if you did not pass or whatever, you did not get nowhere, you know what i mean . Host terry is next in atlanta sorry, we will hear from jason in san diego, california. Last call on this topic. Go ahead. Caller good morning and happy new year to you. I would like to say that the killer, i think in south carolina, North Carolina, dylan roof, he was invited into the church, he sat down with prayer, then he opened up on them and killed them. That is pure hate. Pure hate. That is all that is. But the social media, any time when the ice is fighting was going on, they would have u. S. American citizens that would leave the comfort of their homes to go and fight with isis. How did they get them to do that . Social media. This. Knows how to do we have a cancer in our society, and it is eating away and the russians know how to use that against us. Responsibly re isnt there a responsibility to bear on the person who did something . Caller there is a responsibility to do something and get help, but his whole life is surrounded with hatred. A lot of these people, you go to their computers and you see what they have been reading come all the literature and stuff. Why do they do that . Host jason will be the last call on the topic. We appreciate people calling. We are going to switch gears and talk about the topic of Climate Change, an issue that will be front and center as campaign 20 gets underway. Joining us, the Natural Resources Defense Councils bob deans will talk about Climate Change. Later in the program, we will talk about Community Policing and other related topics. Author and Police Officer adam wilson will talk about the challenges facing Law Enforcement in the United States. Washington journal continues after this. Announcer sunday, book tv features the latest books from former trump Deputy Assistant Sebastian Gorka and former New York Times labor reporter Steven Greenhouse. So many people do not know what unions are, what they do come how they bring us pensions, and there is a bumper sticker, unions, the folks who brought us the weekend. I want to explain to people that unions have achieved a whole lot in American History but they are in decline. As a result, things are considerably worse for workers then was the case 30, 40 years ago. Announcer watch featured book tv. N authors on washington journal continues. Host this is bob deans, the director of engagement for the Natural Resources Defense Council. Happy new year. Guest happy new year, pedro. Your remind us of organization and what it does. Guest the Natural Resources Defense Council is nonprofit and we have been working for three for 50 years. It is our 50th anniversary. We use our laws and courts to hold polluters to account. We have been doing it for 50 years and we look forward to another good one. Host what does the term Climate Change mean to people versus what you have seen in the past . Guest it is huge. This past decade is when Climate Change left out of the lab and onto our front pages and on television screens. People understand we have a problem and they know we need to do something about it. 70 of the people want our government to do something about it, according to quinnipiac polls. This is the decade, starting now, that we need to get this right. Nations, tying cysts scientists from all over the world are telling us that we need to get this ship turned around, cut our fossil fuel pollution by about a half by 2030, on the way to cutting it by 80 , cutting all of it or offsetting that with that remains by no later than 2050 if we are going to avoid the worked the worst impacts of climate catastrophe. Host we have seen those type of deadlines before, that if we do x by such and such a date what is different now . Guest we look around and the seas are rising, they are rising charleston, cape cod, virginia. Nine of the worst 10 fires in californias history we have seen in this past decade. Fasterosing species at a rate than any other time since the dinosaurs disappeared 65 million years ago. The Great Barrier reef is dying. We are seeing croplands turning china,rt, and parts of kenya, kansas. As people see this more and more, they understand that if we leave our children a livable world, we need to get this fixed. There is no time to lose. Seeing inhat you are australia are there other determining factors . Guest absolutely. The brushfires, which may have been responsible for the death of half a million animals alone, people see this and we know we have to change. Host if you want to ask questions about Climate Change related to Natural Resources can 2027488000 at free democrats, for, 2027488001 for republicans, 2027488002 for independents. Guest we are nonpartisan so we do not endorse candidates. But it is very heartening to see these candidates out there talking about Climate Change, putting it front and center, talking about how we would implement a Green New Deal, talking about what we are going to do to move to 100 clean energy and create millions of jobs in the heartland doing just that. Talking about how we can help protect our communities, help strike a blow for Environmental Justice and income equity. And also helping to promote the thriving ecosystem so that we are protecting our oceans, our air, our water, those National Resources on which all life depends. It is heartening to see people putting that at the top of the agenda. We have enormous potential here. We have right now today, three. 3 million americans who are going to get up, suit up, roll up their sleeves, and go to work, helping us create a cleaner, smarter way to power our future so we can shift away from fossil fuels. For the greentics new deal say it is unrealistic to put those priorities into play and economically it would do damage. How would you respond . Thet when you talk about goals themselves, creating a livable world for our children, thriving communities, economic justice, environment of justice. You talk about a thriving ecosystem. Eople support those goals 81 of the public supports those goals, so the question is how do we implement it . We are busy doing that right now. Pedro, there are well over a dozen pieces of legislation, either pending or potential, to take on pieces of this. We are hard at work helping with that, and we want to make sure that were doing this in a way that includes all americans and makes all of our workers partners, especially those workers who might be in the fossil fuel industry and worried for their future. We need to make sure they are partnering with his Clean Energy Future so nobody is left behind. The Energy Secretary testified before the Natural Resources committee on the topic of Energy Related issues. How did the administrations efforts on environmental is him and Energy Issues i want to have you listen and give your take on it. Through the power of innovation, the United States is leading the world in Energy Production and in the reduction of emissions. America has become the top producer of oil and natural gas, and soon we will become a net energy exporter. It also includes historic growth in renewable energy. Today america is the secondhighest generator of wind and solar energy in the world. We are also providing Nuclear Energy by developing advanced technologies such as small modular reactors and advanced reactors. We are expanding the use of clean energy era since 2005, National Greenhouse gases have fallen by 13 . Power sector emissions have been falling by 28 , according to the epa. That is something allamericans can be proud of. As we pursue this all of the above energy strategy, we must continue to protect our energy infrastructure. We have developed the north American Energy resilience model, the first of a kind tool that will allow us to better understand infrastructure risk and improve system resilience in real time. While we are developing and protecting our energy infrastructure, we are making sustained progress in cleaning up the nations legacy of nuclear waste. I am proud to say that the last radioactive waste has been removed from the basin and stored safely away from the columbia river. List he. Deans, the gave what is the response . Reductionsemissions took place before this president took office. We have been losing ground since he took office. But he made a good point about wind and solar. We are producing right now about 8 of our electricity nationally from the wind and the sun, six times where we were a decade ago, enough to power 40 billion homes. That is real progress, something to be excited about. In texas, the oil capital of the world, 16 of its electricity comes from wind turbines. Development. Citing we need to continue to invest in research and development, bringing down the cost of wind and solar. It has fallen about 80 in the past decade. So more and more utilities executives are making the decision, that this is a better bet dollar for dollar than old fossil fuels. Host patrick is in dayton, ohio, democrats line. Deans. Up first with bob go ahead. Caller good morning. Am host host i on the air . You are on mi on the air . Host you are on, go ahead. Caller i want to talk about the impact of the president , going ahead and dealing with the Climate Change. There are a lot of Great Companies doing that today and we are needing to enhance that. People need to get behind it and do that. With the innovation we have in terms of scientists, it would be a great idea for them to find out how they can cripple the output of the gas and oil we are using. Solart in addition with and air and windmills and all that. With somesome intelligence. A person onto hear the hill like you have right now saying we are doing a great job with solar and wind and whatnot. I am thrilled about that. With all the problems we have had around the world, we need to do something. Host patrick, thank you. Guest thanks so much, patrick, and dayton is one of the cities that helped build the country into one of the strongest economies in the world, and we need to make sure that manufacturing ace stays strong that Manufacturing Base stays strong. In ohio, there are 100,000 Clean Energy Jobs right now. In 2018, when the Buckeye State is losing jobs, Clean Energy Jobs grew 5 . That are good paying jobs cannot be outsourced for carpenters, electricians, engineers, designers acrosstheboard the board. This is where we need to keep pushing. Ohio is on the cutting edge of this, and we need to keep it there. Host and gentlemen from Copenhagen Business School makes this argument fossil fuel meets 81 of our Global Energy needs, and even if they promise climate policy, one action that could take that would make a difference would be to demand a fast increase in spending on Green Energy Research and development so that Energy Sources become cheap enough. Guest we should be spending more on research and development. We know we have to move to a low Carbon Economy in this country and globally. Locally, we anticipate 10 trillion in investment. In Clean Energy Technologies over just the next three decades. We won American Workers to be winners in the global speak stays sweepstakes. That success begins here at home. Research and development is important, but also getting policies right to put in place to help encourage us to move down that road. Linesthose on the front of research and Development Industry versus changing policy. Guest and we are seeing that. Investment is going in that direction. Ofhave had huge, hundreds billions of dollars invested in these technologies in recent years alone. But we know that, we do big things as a nation by devoting collective resources to common goals so that the aspirations that we share, the values that we share, the interests that we share can be pursued as a nation. Line, teresa in michigan. Hi there. Caller hi. Does his Organization Get federal funding, and i think he should tell the American People just how wonderful this president has been for Climate Change. Get no federal funding at all, teresa. We get funding from private donations and some foundations. Record president supper on Climate Change has been abysmal. This president has gone but they president s record on Climate Change has been abysmal. Us out of the paris agreement. Landmark accord. Michigan, people are benefiting from thousands of new jobs being created by the push to create some of the best all electric and hybrid cars anywhere in the world right there in michigan. We are proud of that work, but the president is trying to rollback this progress. He has gone after the vehicle clean car and efficiency standards that were put in place with the assistance of the automakers. The automakers did not want to turn their backs on this opportunity. They are invested in this opportunity. The president s record on Climate Change has been abysmal, and we need to do better. Host the countries that remained in the agreement, there was a recent story in the wall street journal to see how they are doing and how they are meeting goals. They said 75 of global met emissionshey reduction goals. Some are taking steps further to undermine the climate pact. Adding coalfired plants what does it say about the strength of the agreement itself . Guest the agreement was never all. T to be a cure lets come back in five years and see what is doing and what is not working and up our goal going forward. You take out American Leadership and it all falls slack. Unfortunately, for better or an indefensible country, Madeleine Albright said that. When we go backwards, which is what happens in this administration, other countries take a\ message for that. We need to send the message to the rest of the world that we are committed to we are not going to abandon our children and leave them to pay the price for climate cash. We need to send a message that this is something we can invest in with confidence. We need to send the message to our children that we are not going to leave you behind. Host can you definitively say that countries like china and india are doing as much as possible to reduce pollution . Guest absolutely they are. China emissions rose one point sent 1 this year. Global emissions rose 6 . China is doing something no other country is doing in the history of the world, moving hundreds of millions of people globebject poverty to the dust to the middle class. China is also the largest investor in the world in clean energy technology, so at the same time they are building coal plants, they are also building more wind and solar than any country in the world. They are building they have invested more in highspeed rail than any country in the world. It is a mixed bag. They have a pollution problem, a carbon problem. They are responsible for 20 of the worlds carbon footprint. We are about half that. Remember, china has four times as many people as we do, so per capita china is doing better than we are. Vernon, republican from virginia. My question is, how many tons of gallons of Aviation Fuel are burned going every which direction at every altitude all over the world every day . It is contributing also a little bit to Climate Change. Guest i dont know the answer to that, but youre right, aviation is a big part of the problem and it needs to be part of the solution. Lets talk about something we all do every day, drive our cars. We are billed as we are burning 300 million gallons of gasoline every day. Every gallon of gasoline puts 20 pounds of Carbon Pollution in the air where it stays and accumulates and helps to heat the planet. We are all going to drive our cars. Lets think about it for a minute. If my car gets 20 miles to the gallon, that is about a carbon a pound of Carbon Pollution per mile. If he gets 40 miles to the gallon, i cut that in half. We know in this country we can build cars and are building cars and we can get an honesttogoodness 50 to 60 Miles Per Hour and still get us to where we need to go. It can be a high efficient car. But right now the chevy volt, that little electric car, is getting the equivalent of 119 miles per gallon. That is made in the United States, one of the best electric cars in the world. It is important that we move in that direction. Pricing fors the that vehicle versus a gasoline powered one . Guest i should not say, but i believe the chevy volt is under 30,000. There are federal tax credits along with that. Those tax credits need to be extended. From Hot Springs National park, youre up next for our guest, bob deans p go ahead. Confusingis is a very subject to most people in america to hear people like yourself saying one thing, and i can turn the radio on this afternoon and here hannity and limbaugh and the rest of them say just the opposite. People do not know what to believe. I want to ask you about the ice caps because i have been told that they are melting at an extending rate, both the north and south pole. Are they melting or are they not . One group will say they are, another group will say they are not. If they are melting, what is the truth about that . Guest thanks for the call p you are right. One of the reasons we are confused is that the fossil fuel industry has spent hundreds of millions of dollars creating an industry designed to confuse and manufacture ignorance and take science out of the equation. I will do my best to respond. We know what is happening. First of all, the south and north are different. When you talk about race in the north, you are talking about sea ice, ice that is floating in the ocean. That is disappearing rapidly. We know that because the National Aeronautics and space administration, the guys who put a man on the moon, fly satellites over and take pictures and they have been doing it for 40 years and the ice is disappearing. Here is what that means. What once was at the top of the world a mirror reflecting the suns heat off the planet is now turning into ocean water that absorbs that heat. So it is accelerating the warming of the atmosphere and the planet. So if next time you are at a campfire out there at hop springs that hot springs, put a blanket over one leg in a mirror over the other and ask which one is getting warmer quicker. Henry is joining us from bayshore, new york, independent line. Caller good morning, mr. Deans. I have a question. What is the approximate amount that the Congress Votes for, subsidies to the Petroleum Industry . Because i feel they are the most , financially profitable industry in the history of the world. Obviously i think that there are besides those who just work in the Petroleum Industry who are profiting. There are people who invest their money, and i think that renewable sources of energy can be very profitable over the course of the whole country and beyond the border of the u. S. And around the world. Is just insane to me that people would not look at that, the general public not look at that and not think that there are people who are influenced by the decision to not do anything about Climate Change. The president must have people around him work for him who are invested in the petroleum know, look at you the regulations that he that he has withdrawn from and canceled and it has had a toxic effect on the environment. Host got the point. Thank you. Henry. Thanks so much, you are right, the president has surrounded himself with fossil fuel advocates. The administrator of the Environmental Protection a fossil fuelncy is lobbyist, as well as the director of the department of interior. The secretary of interior. You are right about that. This subsidies to the fossil fuel industry are enormous. So at minimum you can get it at about 2 million a year, but that only scratches the surface. Nationalagine our security policy, our entire Foreign Policy is centered around the acquisition of fossil fuels around the world. These are in normas subsidies the American People are paying. Here is the real thing. We do not pay the smallest part of the price of fossil fuels when we pump gas or flick lights, or turn off the stove. Fuels it price for fossil , putting our oceans and cosan marine life at risk of a bp style our oceans and marine life at risk of a bp style blowout. We pay a price when we set the fuel on fire, choking the atmosphere with dangers Carbon Pollution driving us toward climate catastrophe and threatening our childrens future. Host we have a viewer that sent a tweet this morning, starting with the Climate Change segment. Even aoc is talking about nuclear. Nuclearce mentioned because serious environment lists now support nuclear. Do you support nuclear . Understand that Nuclear Power is providing about 19 of our electricity in this country. We do not expect that to change much in the foreseeable future. But it is important to remember that we think nuclear has to be a couple of things. First and foremost, it has to be safe. I think in this country the fukushima been good, and chernobyl and places, safety is an issue. It has to secure. Fuel from nuclear here we are some 70 years after the dont of Nuclear Power and we still have not solved the problem of what we do permanently to dispose of that fuel in a secure way. We still have not solved the that problem. These have to be sustainable and they have to pay for themselves. There is not an investor in wall street who will write a check for a Nuclear Power plant. We are seeing a new generation of Nuclear Power being installed in georgia. It is tremendously is banks of tremendously expensive. Perhaps there is a generation of Smaller Nuclear reactors. You feel like there may be some promise there, but we are waiting to see. Anything in the foreseeable future that those will replace things like fossil fuels . Solar is paying is replacing fossil fuels rapidly. The money in georgia would be better spent investing in efficiency so we do more with less waste, investing in clean power. Dollar for dollar, there is better payback. Bob deans from the Natural Resources Defense Council joining at this point. Morris from san diego, republican line. Go ahead. Caller if you believe in Climate Change, you might as well believe in santa claus or the eastern buddy the easter bunny. My question for you, mr. Deans two questions, actually. Progress is the Climate Change problem, without america and all of our money, doing . Trump pulled us out of the paris accords. It is a joke. It is a master plan to bankrupt this country. I dont think it will ever see the light of day as a source of energy. Guest first, dont blame this on god. The pope himself has said we address Climate Change, the vicar of god. Global, average Global Temperatures have increased by about 1. 8 degrees fahrenheit over a little more than a century. Like a lot,ot sound but we are seeing the consequences. There is two thirds of warming that the planet can tolerate without triggering the worst impacts of Climate Change, which means we really find ourselves in a world of why has it happened . We know why. We have increased the amount of Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere 31 just since 1960. We have raised the amount of Carbon Dioxide to its highest level in more than 800,000 years, and it has come from burning fossil fuels. There is no doubt about that, no question about it. How do we know this . We know it from the National Oceanic atmospheric administration. We know it from the National Academy of sciences. Created by congress during the civil war to tell us the bedrock truth about what is happening in the world around us. At the this from people Lawrence Livermore lab, folks making lasers when we were learning how to use tupperware. People were learning how to Nuclear Warheads on submarines when chuck berry was writing johnny be goode. Host what part of that is achievable if the United States is a part of it is not part of it . Guest a lot of countries are moving forward without us. A lot of citizen states in this country are moving forward without federal action. And cities es miami, charlotte, seattle. Dozens of cities have made a commitment to cut their carbon footprint. More than 28 states around this country have put in place actual standards or targets to expand renewable power. Just over the next few years. California, new york, and four other states have committed to what we call net zero carbon by 2050 if not sooner. What net zero means is basically we are going to eliminate 80 of Carbon Pollution. If we cannot, we will do something to offset it, strengthen the wetlands, our forest, the Natural Systems and put it in healthy soil and lock it away forever. Position ons your natural gas as a bridge fuel . Guest we do not refer to natural gas as a bridge fuel. It is a fossil fuel. It is cleaner burning than coal, but it turns out if you liquefy this gas and send it around the country or the world and have to gasify it again to be burned, it is just as dirty if not earlier than burning coal. We do not view it as a bridge fuel. The increase in natural gas is responsible for the largest part of the increase in global in missions of Carbon Dioxide. Over the past several years. Of carbonemissions dioxide over the past several years. Think again, that money that we are investing in this natural gas infrastructure, remember, some of this is for 30, 35 years or more. Locking our kids and grandkids into an addiction of fossil fuel is not the way to go in our country. Broughtbelieve that was into the process of fracking. Is that still going on . Guest fracking is still going on in a big way. Getking is simply a way to oil and natural gas out of shale deposits underground. The problem is we should not be fracking everywhere. We should not be fracking willynilly. There are better ways to frack then the way we are doing it. These companies are not required to report to chemicals. There are hundreds of chemicals that go into these fracking operations that are blasted underground. Every time you fracking a well, you create gallons of contaminated water. Ast of this gets down into nap refer where it destroys forever the possibility of using that aquifer for drinking water. In oklahoma, there has been so much fracking, so much of the underground blasting, it has turned oklahoma into a live earthquake zone, something it has not been for quite a long time. We are not fracking properly. There is a lot more we can and should be doing to reduce the risk of this. But ultimately what we need to be doing is reducing our reliance on natural gas, oil, and coal. We know we have to do this and we have a limited amount of time. Host democrats line, vincent, in new york. Caller hi, can you hear me . Host we can hear you. Caller i want to ask mr. Deans about the fact of the effects of perennial war on the environment. We just changed from one war to the next in the middle east. That must be having a terrible effect on our ecology. Not think there is anything worse for the environment or for mankind in general than war. We are opposed to it. Host this is jessica from georgia. She asks you about organic agriculture in the effect on Climate Change. Guest organic agriculture is important. My son just finished studying it in North Carolina. Made aanic movement has big contribution. A lot of what we are learning about healthy soil is coming from the organic soil movement. There are a lot of farmers in the heartland who is not economical for them to go completely organic, but they are taking lessons from this, learning about cover ups, putting up cover crops for the winter that help prevent soil erosion, hoping to return nutrients to the soil. So the organic Farm Movement is important because it is making a contribution on its own. It is important symbolically and because we are learning lessons that we can apply more broadly to agriculture. To nothere is a trend eat meat that will help. Do you buy into that . Guest we have not gotten into the business of telling people what to eat and what not to eat, but there is no doubt that the gety industry we cannot to where we need to go without one of the exciting things is that when you go into restaurants now, there are a lot of great options. You do not have to order that. Larger chicken has a footprint then red meat. We have viewed these things as luxuries. My wife is a wonderful cook. Her mother came from nor lance, so we do not like to take things off the table. That is from new orleans, so we do not like to take things off the table. But we do not have them every day. From one more call, massachusetts, independent line for bob deans. Caller thank you for taking my call. I am a climate researcher specifically of Greenhouse Gas emissions. That is one area of the nrdc that is very weak. Mentioned the fluoride in missions or the nitrous oxide in missions where the sand mining or the processing with tons of coal. Calling such processes renewable tosustainable as alternative fossil fuels is just not accurate. Guest i am not sure of the details of the Mining Operations you discussed or whether we have taken a position on that. Veryknow we have been active in the reduction of hydrofluorocarbons and some of these other powerful Greenhouse Gases that you mentioned. You did mention methane, and im sure that is on the list as well. We have been active in trying to reduce methane productions and pushing for policies on that. We are working hard to do that. Here, ttom line for us norman, is that we will view this decade as a decade where we ourwriting a letter to childrens childrens children. Whether we rise to the challenge or shrink from it, it will determine whether what that letter says to our children. Were sorry, or youre welcome. I believe we are going to get it right. I think we will look back on this as the decade that was the twilight of jurassic fuels and the dawn of a brighter, more promising, more hopeful future. Host the website for the Natural Resources defense counsel, nrdc. Org. If you want to find out more about the organization, bob deans serves as the director of strategic engagement. Thatanders campaign saying additionally the senate received more than 1. 8 million in donations, and he raised 18 million in the month of december alone involving new contributions from 40,000 new donors on the final day of the Fourth Quarter, according to his campaign. That is a recent fundraising number coming in. We will share more with you. Orthe next when he minutes so, we will discuss issues that you see as far as top issues in campaign 2020. We start without republican line. Grand junction, colorado. We will hear from everett. Good morning. Caller good morning come everybody. I guess my issue probably would be tax reform. Tax tothe idea of a flat be fair all the way through the system. It seems to be dropped off every time anybody brings it up. The other one was, a previous caller failed to mention the recycling of these wind generating blades. I guess there is a landfill in wyoming. I just read the article that they cannot recycle them, so they are burying them in the ground. Host the flat tax you talk about, how does that compare to the tax cut passed by the republicans two years ago . Why or for a flat tax overall . Overr everybody argues who has the best taxes, or the highest taxes or the lowest taxes. If they would just make a flat tax through the system, whether we pay 100 or 5 . Put it all the way through the system that would alleviate a lot of argument, and it never seems to get any host traction. Any traction. Host that is everett from colorado. We will hear from rudy on top Campaign Issues of 2020. Environment, the environment, the environment, the environment. Host why is that . Caller i will be 80 years old in a couple months, so it is not for me. It is for the future of planet earth. All life on earth, my grandchildrens ran children, we have got to do something. Plenty can be done and there is a lot of money to be made in Reusable Energy also. The president we have right now is the worst enemy to the environment i ever saw in my life. Please wake up. Tyra in North Carolina, independent line. Caller yes. This is my first time calling. I have never seen my country in such a mess. That goes on host when it comes to top issues of 2020, what would that be . Caller that would be health care for one thing because youre not getting any now. You get to be my age, you need health care. And the environment. Host ok. When it comes to other fundraising issues, the headline from the washington post, Pete Buttigieg topping 24 million when it comes to campaign contributions. We cannot call him mayor pete technically anymore because the New York Times is reporting that his eight years of office ended on new years day and a new mayor was sworn in. Mayor pete almost since the start ofs Campaign Last january joined the ranks of former officeholders seeking the presidency. Former Vice President joe biden is one example who is not a former anything to his staff. Biden advised that Vice President biden will attend another event in New Hampshire. Republican line. For me it is the right to live. Are the right to liberty, life, and the pursuit of happiness or life to me, and our president today, for all his faults, you might not like him. I would not marry him, but at least he supports the most vulnerable of us, those people in the womb who are being destroyed at whim ear that is to me the most important issue for me when i vote for someone. Texas, his is linda from who says the Biggest Issue is the courts, the president assuring constitutionalist judges for decades. Mary says i am voting for the Green New Deal and medicare for all. From sue in apache junction, arizona, his top issue, debt and deficit. We are running up a debt that is at an unsustainable rate. If you want7488003 to text us your thoughts. Include your name, your city come your state. To texas, independent line. Caller i was wondering about the people with the green new how much they know , which is almost impossible without diesel fuel equipment. Host is this a top Campaign Issue, or are you calling in with the last segment . Caller it is a little bit of both. There is a little bit of hypocrisy how far they are willing to go on the Green New Deal that affects us all. As far as Climate Change. Host ok. Yangfrom texas, andrew brought in a total of 16. 5 million. This is conning up next, independent line. Caller hello . Host you are on. Caller am sorry, i didnt hear my name. You know, it all started i think when waters, her do this and that, the second one is about pollution. All these demonstrators what are they doing . Are they riding on buses or are they working walking or riding their bikes . They are probably getting in their parts to demonstrate and take off. Host is this a Campaign Issue for you, or overall an issue. Caller i wish everybody would start looking at what they are doing and everything, because other countries are looking at us. They are probably laughing at us. And that is not right. Ohio, fromr heights, our independent line. Todd, good morning. Caller good morning. The major issue for me is that i believe the candidates should be pushing to implement a federally mandated curriculum for the tax fair funding of Public Schools from the third grade through the 12th grade, complete with Group Projects every semester. It should be nonpartisan bias, it should definitely not be really just biased, and third grade should start with them being taught the municipalities functions where they are, including why the school is the size that it is, how many classrooms and teachers that it has, some thing as simple as what is the function of the fire hydrant being on one side of the street versus the other, things like that. For thirdgraders to identify with. Host what convinced you that this type of education was necessary ech . Caller every year for the last 20 years i check reports about the irs, a direct reflection of the weaker citizen base at about the function of government. Every four years i Pay Attention to the federal elections and i listen to how much they miss in voter participation. With the amount of how many people are eligible to vote versus how many actually vote, which is another reflection of a weak appreciation for the functions of government. If you want to improve the voting population, the educated, correct voting population, if you want to improve people participating in the tax base, this is where you do it. You develop a strong appreciation. You are not going to get everybody, but you develop a strong appreciation along the way for civics and the functions of government. If you teach them on the local level from the third two the fourth, complete with Group Projects the third through ninth complete with Group Projects, by the time they get to ninth grade, they will be tight on county government, a knew supple but governments municipal governments, state governments, understanding the governments and functions. At that time when they turn 18, you will get for the most part a better voter, a better citizen, a better educated voter then someone who will vote for a longer period of time. This last thing, hopefully, maybe it gets implemented, and about five years you could push the voting age back to 16. Host lets go to david irvine california, independent line. The top issue for me is that we should go back and get that nuclear deal reinstated that trump got out of, bolton and all his buddies tried to tell us not to do that. They are going to get a Nuclear Missile over there in iran. They were not even trying before. All the countries agreed to that deal. He is probably going to get us all killed. That is the main issue. Once they get a missile and they keep doing what they are doing, we are all going to get killed. Everybody is going to die. There will not be anybody coming to help. God will not be able to save us. Flyinge missiles start host that is dave in irvine, california. The iran clash that was outside the u. S. Embassy ending there in the the class that was for reportedly the cancellation trip by the ,ecretary of state to ukraine the New York Times announced his trip spurred speculation about what messages he would deliver to dylans key on behalf of mr. Trump. Mr. That does not and conspiratorial claims of ukraine interference in the 2016 election per that is when the New York Times as well. Emma is in richmond, virginia, republican line. Morning and happy new year to everybody. I am a Senior Citizen who all of my life has been i have been closely connected with nature, have majored in college in art realizing that there was just so much math and science that i could not quite get it. Anyway, i would like to say to all the republicans of the world that are supporting and praising donald trump, that they have to wake up. And an intelligent person, before he was even elected, i could see that he had a lot of misses in his education and personality and wisdom. For him to say that Climate Change is a hoax, folks, you have got to wake up and know that that is not true. We have support we need support from the top to correct this awful problem that we have all over the world. And work on Climate Change. From laramie, wyoming, independent line. Good morning. Caller good morning. Istop issue for the campaign the National Debt. I would very much appreciate hearing the president ial candidates and federal officials , elected officials and federal officeholders talk about what they would do or what can be done to reduce the National Debt or to reduce the rate of increase of the National Debt. I would very much appreciate hearing a discussion about that. Thank you very much. Host in the light of an Impending Senate trial, the usa today had a story about usa about senators planning to attend those and be part of the impeachment processes. They cite and first start with Elizabeth Warren saying there are some things that are more important than politics, and if we have an impeachment proceeding going on, i will be there. She told that she said last month. She is worried about if it will hurt her campaign she said this is not about politics. Impeachment is something i take seriously. Ais is about an constitutional oath that every member of the senate took to keep the president out of the United States. The senator from minnesota for constitutional duty. Have the most electeds and former electeds in any part of the country, and this is including iowa. The booker campaign, cory bookers campaign, told reporters last month that the senator is considering every possible option, including redeye flights and teletown halls. Republican line, go ahead. William in bayshore, new york, hello. Caller yes, good morning. Good morning. Host you are on, go ahead. Caller yes, good morning. Host i am going to put you on hold because you are listening to the television because of me. Go ahead and turn that down. Lets go line. Peter in connecticut, good morning. Apologies for that. Washington, d. C. Rj, hello. Caller the number one issue is education reform. Our children are falling behind in every category. Our teachers are underpaid. This president does not care about it or talk about it nearly enough. If you hope to have children, our future is in their hands. We simply have to do much more. The number one issue for me, for him, for keeping the majority in the senate, getting the majority in the house are presented lives. Tim from rhode island via text. Republican line, grand junction, colorado. Caller i was trying to get through. Yeah, that say that, right there they have got to realize if they think they are going to control the weather, god is in control. Im saying it was a great take to get him out of what did they know better than god . He will control the climate. Host that is finishing off this round. Coming up we will hear from author and Police Officer adam wilson about the challenges he sees firsthand facing Law Enforcement in the United States. He is the author of tactical reload. That conversation and we return. This holiday week book tv is on cspan2 every day with primetime features each night. Tonight at 8 00 eastern, sarah milov in her book the cigarette. The antismoking movement of the first two decades rode that wave of nativism in thinking about what type of behavior was appropriate for nativeborn, healthy americans. Eastern, at 8 00 p. M. Donald trump, jr. And his book triggered. Unlike so many of those on the left it is no longer a fringe element. This is like mainstream pop culture today. Unlike them i have experienced it myself. Host adam wilson is a columnist and the author of the book tactical reload, talking about issues and concerns related to police and Law Enforcement. Thank you for joining us this morning. Talk about your personal background. Guest i have been in policing for approximately 15 years. Started out in dispatch. Did some right along and was bit by the bug and i have not looked back. Host what led to the creation of the book . Time we were taking a beating in the media, on social media. I cant do anything. I could not do anything about the false narrative and things getting pushed out. What i felt like i could do was ine a fraction of influence my own Police Culture and my profession that i love very much. Few words turned into 5000 words, 10,000 words. I put it out there. It has been well received and it was my own personal story of perseverance. Things i wished i had known going into policing. For instance, and there is nothing news breaking, the Police Culture is a cynical culture. It is. Realize is atnt some point if everything in your vocabulary is negative, that is the way your brain begins to communicate with everybody. It becomes a cancer in an organization. Whenever you have a rookie patrolman that comes in, they want to be accepted, as we all do. They look at veteran officers for guidance on how they walk, talk, carry themselves. I observed many times all of a sudden this brandnew officer is ripping the door of a police car because they are so excited to be there. And if you must they are complaining about the department and community. That is the wrong behavior. If you just explained that the somebody you need to communicate. You need to take a step back and catch yourself when you start doing that, into that realm of negativity. It is part of the job. We all have our sessions. Gripe sessions but it becomes a cancer in an organization. Host you talked about false narratives you say that are seen towards Police Officers. Are not aould say we bunch of triggerhappy bigots. We are not. We are not a bunch of racists. I know people like to push that narrative on us. The majority of it is not true. I have worked with some of the most morally upstanding, virtuous people. Men and women that just being around them makes you better. Whenever i hear this dont get me wrong. There are nearly 700,000 of us. I hear the bad apple comment all the time. It is the truth. We will have bad apples. But i think we try to do our best to alleviate those issues as quickly as we can. We can talk about good things that came out of ferguson with body cameras and trying to become more transparent. One thing that infuriated me recently was the president ial Justice Board asked benedict college, a historically black college that she have president ial nominees or candidates that are seeking the most Important Office in the land. Biden if i were to get pulled over, what should i do . Biden says you should respect the officer. Good. I like that. Then he says, he will not get shot in the back of the head. When you hear Something Like that it becomes infuriating because it makes it seems like we are writing around executing aroundies riding executing minorities and that is not the case. Biden follows it up with a young lady asks if she was question,r, the same how should she react to the police. His response is if you were my daughter, you would be caucasian so you would not be pulled over. You have two very influential men. Two of the most powerful and influential people in the entire country. They have an opportunity to bring that decisiveness a little bit smaller. They take the opportunity to fear mongering among these africanamerican students. It was infuriating. Host this was cbs saying it was Bernie Sanders making that remark, not the former Vice President. Guest sanders made the one about shooting in the back of the head, followed by the Vice President making the one about you would not be pulled over because you are white. That is ridiculous. Opportunity to bring some, not necessarily lawity, but you can bring enforcement and the community a little closer together. If they were to ask me that, come out and do a ride along. Communicate with the police. Open up the lines of communications for yourself and see what it is actually like out there. To ask ouru want guest questions about assaults on Community Policing and related topics, 202 7488000 for the eastern and central time zones. 202 7488001 for the mountain and pacific time zones. If you are a Law Enforcement officer, it is 202 7488002. Twitter, facebook available as well. Since you brought up ferguson, what do you think of corrections to the perceptions you talked about . Guest things are good and bad post ferguson. Some of the good is i think we reaffirmed a relationship with the community. We evaluated those partnerships and programs in the community and measured their effectiveness. Another good thing that came out of ferguson was more cameras. We want to see the public to see. It has alleviated some of the complaints and outright lies on officers that you really dont even hear about it that much. Host that was in your experience with the department you work for . Guest correct. Body cameras are expensive. Not everyone can afford them. It is expensive to house the data. Want theity of us interactions on camera. That takes me to my other point on body cameras. As a supervisor or summative that watches these, it is like a quality check. You can make sure the people receiving the service receive service date i receive the service they deserve. There is inservice training every single year. When ever an officerinvolved shooting happens there is we need more training. We will take all the training we can get. Training from location to location. There are outliers. Some regions have better instructors and others but one of the misconceptions on officerinvolved shootings is i dont think people understand there is a lot that happens to you when it is a true fight or flight scenario. When someones life is in jeopardy. I will walk you through it a little bit. Will start to lose peripheral vision. That is what becomes the tunnel vision. Your depth perception will alter. Your motor skills will deteriorate. The dexterity in your hands will start to go away. From my own personal experience my hearing starts to go away. Its called auditory seclusion. People sayme shoot them in the leg. That is not reality. The situations you might not be able to close one eye because your brain is trying to take in so much information that you cannot aim. T is why authors seek accuracy drops in a gunfight. You take all of that and put it on a person. You expect them to make the best decision they can in the moment to save their life and the lives of others. Peopleoesnt concern when you hear about these reactions when youre in battle, as far as your ability to handle the situation the right way . Guest i wish there was a more realistic way to train for it. It is very difficult to train yourself to put your brain and that survival mode. It is almost something you have to gain from experience. We can find ourselves in as realistic training as we can and try to get the stress levels up, but at the end of the day it is very difficult. Very thereis a is an expectation of perfection from police. Not that we dont want to get that and have every decision be perfect, but that is not the reality. It is a very difficult situation. A lot of times it is a lose lose. Host the first call is from tennessee. You are on with adam wilson. Go ahead. Caller good morning. How are yall doing this morning . Guest good morning. Caller yesterday i ran across a story that i think was on cspan. Im not sure if i saw it on cspan or the internet. It was the first time i heard of this. 4 inieve it was precinct minneapolis. Some police had put up what is termed a racist Christmas Tree. I was wondering if you had heard this story in if you have any thoughts on. I think that is the same part of minneapolis where the man was shot by police when the policeman asked him to give his license. He reached for his license and the policeman shot him. The mans girlfriend livestreamed that on facebook. Situations like this racist Christmas Tree . It be addressed and can that be addressed in a general manner or do you have to go from department to department and try to address it . Guest thank you for that question. Im not familiar with the races Christmas Tree. I am not sure they are deeming racist about it. It is hard for me to speak on that. Host hanging from the christmas , malt liquor, and crumpled bags from popeyes, cigarette pieces and garbage with a strip of yellow crime scene tape. They show a picture. I know you are seeing this firsthand but go ahead. Guest that is a lot to unpack there, but if something is deemed racist you have to hold yourself accountable off the bat. There is no place in it. There is nothing productive for policing. It just gives us a black eye. Nothing progressive will come out of that. I think whoever is responsible nice to be held accountable. The shooting the judgment was talking about was leonard castille. In my personal opinion he was murdered. I think we have to do a better job of holding ourselves accountable. The public that we serve deserves no less. Host to that end, ive you are saying until you hold your own accountable for wrongdoing, Community Involvement is mute. Guest i agree. I think we are doing a better job of trying to hold ourselves accountable. With the bodycams. In the coffee cup incident in kansas where the vulgar comment and pig was written on a coffee cup that was ended up being a joke, i did not think it was very funny. Andoes give us a black eye makes it hard for me to sit appear and defend us whenever we become our own worst enemy sometimes. It just makes it very difficult. To that point, the gentleman with the coffee cup was subsequently fired and held accountable. Some people may not agree with that but he put those employees at mcdonalds a very poor light. It is something they had to deal with. That is not right. We are the purveyors of truth and justice. This is the greatest job in the world in my opinion. We cant do stuff like this if we want to continue to make andress in the Community Keep moving forward. The other issues are moving ahead. Another reason i wrote the book and came on this show this is the thing. I am not naive enough to think if i have a slip of the tongue or i misinterpreted on what i say that i could be attacked. I could lose my job. But i think having these conversations is a requirement at this point. We cannot keep allowing ourselves to fall victim to the fear mongering and false narratives. The attorney general put out a great article regarding the level of respect police are losing across the country. Assaults on police are up. There are many issues that are attributed to not necessarily the physical dangers of the job assaults we get from social media. Everybody has a camera phone in your face when youre trying to do anything. You are fighting on the ground with somebody. Instead of somebody helping they want to film it and get the next viral video. Host michigan, david, your next. Caller happy new year america. I want to ask the gentleman about the socalled blue code of silence or the blue line of to let were cops refuse people who were investigating a cop killing or eight cop killing somebody a cop killing somebody, they dont participate. There are basically no snitches for cops. I wanted to get his opinion on that. And also the militarization of police in america. In my opinion as an iraq war veteran cops in the country have looser rules of engagement then we did an iraq. They can kill an american citizen who simply has a gun in his hand or what you think is a gun in his hand. A lot of times it turns out there was no gun in his hand even though we have the Second Amendment right, but whatever. I want to get his thoughts on it. Guest going back to the beginning of the question, the blue wall of silence, i will not deny that maybe there are departments somewhere where maybe this is stronger than others. From my experience that is not the case. Experience we want those guys out of there. There is nothing good that will come out of it by lying and helping somebody that has done wrong. We are the good guys. I did not get in this job to be corrupt. I got in this job because i wanted to protect the people from bad people. I dont care what race, gender, or if they have a uniform on or not. Grosslyd you acting negligent with overt racism or maliciously, you will be dealt with. I think nowadays the accountability for people or the police is greater than ever. We have body cams. We know what happens if we get caught lying or covering up. We will face charges, and we should if thats the case. As for the militarization of police, i think we respond to a threat as tactically as we can. There are a lot of weapons out there. We want to one up. If we find ourselves in a fair fight, we have done something wrong. We dont want to come to the gunfight with the same gun. We want to overpower the threat. As far as going back to the being unarmed, into thousand 19 they were 995 officer involved shootings where we killed someone. I believe 47 were unarmed. 23 were white and 17 being africanamerican and hispanic and otherwise. There are millions upon millions of interactions with the police. Number and that storyline gets sensationalized. That comes back to the false narrative put out there that we are just randomly killing people that are unarmed. It is just not the case. Host this is off of twitter. What is the ratio of training regarding using weapons and aggressive complaints versus deescalation . Guest that will vary from place to place. You go through Rookie School or whatever people call it around the country, but you go through weeks of firearms training. This is the thing. I wish there was a deescalation technique to cure everything. We would certainly use it. Paperwork. T like whenever we use force there is a lot of paperwork that goes along with it. Ofwe could talk our way out every conversation, we would be happy to. The deescalation, the term gets used a lot and i dont think there is a magic training of deescalation out there. We try. We do inservice classes every year where we try to stay uptodate on lots of stuff. Host verbal judo classes . Guest it is basically a way to try to bring you from being emotionally had checked hijacked to a level of reason. You are not listening to what im saying. , weead of going handson try to say certain words and bring you back to a level of reason where we can talk and have a conversation. Host olympia, washington. James are our guest, adam wilson. Caller regarding the situation with michael brown, the brown i am reading this from wiki. Wikipedia. Browns dna was found on wilsons left eye. That seems to vindicate that wilson was and if it. The grand jury found him innocent. Why wasnt that publicized . Ferguson was a total overreaction. Guest i agree. I think part of the issue is police are an easy target. Whenever a shooting happens like michael brown, the Community Gets very emotional. Im not saying they shouldnt, but the investigation has to take place. In the meantime people can say whatever they want to. A lot of it not being true. A lot of it came out to be a lie. That ended up coming out as a narrative. By the time we are able to put those facts out, most of the time people have moved on. They went to another issue. They dont care about the issue as much as they did before and you dont hear about it as much. I spoke to a lot of people that dont know about the hands up dont shoot mantra that was incorrect. Host your bio describes you as a Homeless High School dropout. Guest thats a question a lot of people ask. Jobll in love with the after i did some right along. Prior to that i was a class clown. I dropped out of high school. Im not proud of it but it was an influential moment in my life because it put a chip on my shoulder ever since. I waited tables. I did not know where i wanted to go in life. I tried college a little bit. Did not really like it. I started looking into policing. A friend of mine had been in it for a while. He mentioned he was a cop now in a small town in my area. What you have to do . He said just go to Rookie School. Law enforcement training. At the time i was a young 22yearold. I started looking into it. That is whatlized i was made to do. If i ever get out of it i will keep serving the public in some form. That was my niche and it became a topic and something im passionate about. I have since furthered my education. Host you got the ged equivalency to go to Rookie School . Guest im not sure. That may vary from program to program. I got my High School Diploma and was able to graduate with my class. I ended up having to go to Summer School and night school. I dont have a squeaky clean background. I was out of my house every early, jumping from couch to couch. It may be resilient and it gave good lens to look at things empathetically. I used that to my advantage in policing. People see the home as part and it sounds like i was sleeping under a bridge. That was not the case. I have great parents. It was a weird time. I went on to grad school and i played with the idea of a phd but this is the greatest country in the world. It really is. From dropping out of high school to now being on cspan with you. That is america. Host from texas, anna. Caller my grandson just graduated from the Dallas Police academy in april. They were promised bodycams, all that. Equipmentbuy his which stops the big bullets. In desota, we have a police chief who is under siege by a mayor in dallas. Today. S crimes solved i wrote a letter to him, and emailed to him to say if you want to know where the hotspots are, i can tell you. ,f you want to do a ride along it opened up my eyes up to kids being on the street. There needs to be a curfew. It was 10 00ime p. M. , do you know where your children are . Half the people dont know. My grandson, they were just involved in four 15yearolds and 17yearolds who had pistol whipped someone and stole his car. My grandson happened to come upon them and see them in the car. It made me take a different look at both sides. The citizens, all they do, a lot of them scream. We also have to say we have a president that said if youre putting somebody in the car, just slam them up against the door. All of that comes and it incites people who are ignorant, you dont go out. Mayor johnson, i hope he is listening to this. These kids are under siege. They have not been given the great equipment. That is their expense. Loansndson has student for criminal justice and forensic because he wants to eventually be a forensic detective. Host i want to get him to respond to things you said. Guest every policeman has their budget issues. Wen from my department leaned on the community to help us with certain budget items. People have been very gracious to help us with it. You are right. A lot of times politicians, mayors, City Councils involve themselves a lot in police issues. Polarizing topic. It is not a left or right thing. You touched on trump a little bit. He should not have said that. Regardless of what side you are on i was talking about Bernie Sanders and joe biden earlier. President trump, i have disagreed with him on many things. We have got to hold everybody accountable. When you say things like that, you are right. These people that say these things have enormous influence and that carries over to the community. That is why assaults on Law Enforcement are up. The numbers are creeping up. There are not nearly as many applicants. To your point on the ride along, if i could change anything, i wished everybody could be required to ride around with the police a little bit. Especially the critics. See what it is like to policing community. I think their eyes will be lessd and they would be likely to jump to conclusions at the onset of an investigation. I think it would help a lot of communication to open up. Host toby and pennsylvania tony in pennsylvania. Caller i look forward to purchasing your book and reading it. With the antiLaw Enforcement sentiment across the country do you feel there are less people applying to be Law Enforcement officers . I have two sons. I have been an officer for 30 years in narcotics. Sons goingpromote my into the line of work i do. If they do, that is their choice. Because of the sentiment i see across the country, and even when you watch congressional hearings here about how they degrade law officials from the federal level on down. Iems to me i want my dont want my sons in that type of environment. I look forward to reading your book. Guest thank you for your 30 years of service and for buying the book. Going back to your point on your kids, that is a common theme among the men and women getting out of Law Enforcement. They see the direction things are going. They dont want their kids to have to have to go through that same thing. In reality i understand. Divorce rates are higher than most. Alcohol abuse and control Substance Abuse is higher than the regular population. Our Life Expectancy is lower. That that alone is enough to not want your kids to go and t go into that line of work. We need good men and women to don the uniform. Other staffing issues, 100 . They dropped significantly after ferguson, but they are starting to slowly creep back up. The difference is it almost seems as if we are just putting bodies out there to get them into uniform because many people in the street catching calls, taking reports, trying to get to those emergency situations. The applicant pool is much lower than it used two. What we are missing out on is more qualified and competitive candidates. That is not a knock towards the people getting into Law Enforcement now. But if you have 200 applications for 10 spots, you will find the cream of the crop as compared to 11 applicants for 10 spots. Hear storiesu about jack wilson and the Texas Shooter case in the church what is your reaction . Guest outstanding. He is a hero. He should be heralded for the same i wrote about the Second Amendment battling virginia. Battle in virginia. Saying it is all most like a cliche. It takes a good person with a gun to stop a bad person with a gun. I am a Firm Believer in the Second Amendment. I think if you start to attack that, you make all the other rights vulnerable. Firearms is the great equalizer between us all. Is equalizer between us and a tyrannical government, between old and young, between weak and strong. That firearm is the equalizer. Like in the case in virginia, the legislation and the governor have put together legislature and the governor have put together what they call a common sense gun reform. They put common sense in there so if anybody opposes it it infers you are not using common sense. A list of handguns, rifles, and even shotguns and it moral. It is almost a it is getting ludicrous. You are empowering the criminal element and you are potentially making victims. You take lawabiding citizens in virginia and in instant you will turn them into a felon for dont comply. Aboutrst part they talked their willingness these the military to enforce the law. That is a very dangerous conversation to have. The entire point of the Second Amendment. I hope that middle ground can be found. There is no evidence for what they would proposing what exit work. Host what you think about the idea of several counties saying they will set up as a second madman sanctuary . Amendment sanctuary . Guest kudos for them from pushing back. I think it is unconstitutional. I think you are doing more harm than good, especially to lawabiding citizens. That involves a firearm and then then and women from guns that were not legally purchased. A small percentage have been to a gun show. This was either given to them by someone else or they have broken into something and it was stolen. Statee basically taking a and taking the means of defense away and that is not right. Look at the active shooters we have got. Gunfree zones . There is less of a chance of meeting somebody that is armed. , but thereve sros are no active shooters at a gun show. It is a guarantee they will probably meet somebody more equipped than they are. Host doesnt matter that this person in case was an instructor on a gun range and skilled in what he did as far as handling the weapon . Does that matter versus an average person with a gun . Guest i think anytime you have a gun you have a responsibility to train with it and really understand your limitations with it. For instance, i dont think people realize how difficult it is going back to what i said earlier how difficult it is to shoot somebody with a handgun a lot of times. A lot of times people will just spray and pray. That is how people get hurt. Everybody needs training, go to the gun range and how to properly handle a firearm. I think it was mr. Jack wilson, he sounds like an incredible guy. If he was in virginia and this law passes, him teaching gun classes would make him a felon. Host lets go to mark in virginia. You are talking with adam wilson, the author of tactical reload. Caller good morning, mr. Wilson. I am prior military. Than io much other understand you were doing things from your point of view. Be me say what i think would a solution from a training and tactical standpoint. Anyone who has ever put on the u. S. Military uniform, one thing undeniable is that the United States, when it comes to basic training, advanced individual training, standard operational procedures for anything you can think about. One of the things we need to discuss and you brought it up in your discussion is maybe look at starting with a national based training. Base training. Focus on federal law, the constitution, things that pertain to being Police Officers. Then have a second fallback, maybe six to eight weeks training with that particular laws to focus on the state that pertain to being a Police Officer. Last but not least after you go through the federal and state have those individuals fallback to their communities where they can basically understand all the different weaknesses. To where they eat, sleep and live. If we can start with uniformity, a lot of these issues you are discussing, i think we will see a massive drop in policing. Host we are out of time. Go ahead. Guest what you describe sounds like a lot of fun. I enjoy training. I enjoy shooting. It sounds like a logistical nightmare, but i think thinking outside of the box ideas are always appreciated. A lot of federal Training Programs that we try to go to. We have such a large police force i think it would be difficult to put everyone through that kind of thing. I like where that direction is going. Host adam wilson is the author of tactical reload. Greg, go ahead. Caller good morning. Thank you for cspan. I am a first time caller so im a little shy. I think the Biggest Issue facing us today is truth in media. I really happen to believe throughout all the media platforms there is a problem with truth. It has created the greatest divide in our country. There should be laws and regulations that govern them. I am tired about hearing about the slippery slope. Ofhout those kinds protections, there are a lot of confirmation bias have ended up believing lies. Host i was going to say when you say truth in media, what do you mean . Caller i think there are media outlets, perhaps some that are all right, but we also see it from the left through msnbc and its response to fox created a schism between themselves. People find their ways to just go to one outlet and they dont see world news or they dont see information, real information, truthful information about politics, Climate Change, whatever it might be. You one morek question i pushed the wrong button but thank you for calling. Brian from massachusetts, republican line. Caller thank you. I will call you pedro. Thank you for listening to me. We heard briefly with your last guest and i would like you have a special show perhaps on the Second Amendment sanctuary movement. I would like an expert on the show. That is one of my campaign things. Host what kind of information would you like to hear in such a segment . Caller probably an expert on the legality of it. It seems to me there is a lot of legislatures and governors that will go about their loss, especially in virginia. All these counties and jurisdictions that will offer Second Amendment sanctuaries. It seems to me a big conflict. I am not sure it is something we need. On either side of the issue. Host thank you for the suggestion. Michaelhear next from in baton rouge, louisiana on the independent line. Caller thank you for letting me,. I will be brief. Democrat. S i was a democrats because i was not sure with this progressive socialism thing, i am worried about that. I like having the idea of being i dont think i dont want socialism. That is why i kind of stopped being a democrat. I am thinking now about voting for donald trump. I hate to say that because i dont like this guy. Host can i ask a question . When you use the term socialism, what does that mean to you . Like, ok, it it is is like a precursor for communism. These small at countries like venezuela, what happened in venezuela and places like that. I dont want to see our country turned ended that with people like Bernie Sanders. People i amng 57. I think young people cant understand the free stuff is good. I have a friend who is young. He is thinking about the Bernie Sanders thing. I dont want to see our country turned into this. We have got to stay sovereign. Socialism is a precursor for communism. Host thank you for calling in. Karen from silver spring, maryland. Am following the gentle when using the wrong idea of socialism. One of the big concerns i have is both parties have a take on how they define health care. Oftentimes it is very much conflated with insurance. Breaking a leg or pulling a muscle is vastly different than something for which you would use insurance. Example would be you dont use Auto Insurance for changing your oil or routine maintenance. I dont understand why nobody addresses the need for separating routine health care or things that dont require hospitalization from very expensive, catastrophic events like cancer. Two artificially drives up the costs and thats where i an environment would not want anybody to take it away. It creates an environment where nobody was to address the fact that you have a good plan right now. As soon as you switch your employer, you have no guarantee you will have the same quality of plans. That is keeping a lot of people locked into employment. That is not really in their best interest. I think both parties should make an honest effort to segment the discussion between providing protection against catastrophic events versus routine things that dont require radical new applications. We will go next to valerie in cedar ridge, california on the independent line. Caller i think the top issue right now is this impeachment. Whether you believe in donald trump or not, i am disgusted with the lack of decorum and the way our leaders are treating each other. Setting up a precedent for young people to think it is ok if you have anarchy if you dont agree with the government or the laws. We have to understand laws are there to und to protect us in a lot of ways. Just because you dont agree with them doesnt mean you dont abide by them. If you dont agree with them, change the laws. I am upset with the democrats because i think they are showing a lot of hypocrisy. Especially Bernie Sanders who was a millionaire himself and sits there and cries about socialism. If they want socialism, lets start with their money. Host james from arlington, texas on the republican line. Caller my issue is the employment situation. The fact that everyone keeps saying we have full employment, to jobs for everyone looking for a job. I know from my own experience i have two engineering degrees. I have not been able to find work for five years. I can sit on a job posting for over a year without having a poster, a posting company even come back with a response to why they would reject me. Host that is james give you perspective on 2020 when it comes to employment. Mike in new york saying our government should bring balance. A Social Security trust fund based on the revenue , then, pay off the debt budget for programs according to voters expectations. I am most concerned about Climate Change, health care and income inequality. Tess on the democrats line. Interested andst the representation of callers who call into media. The guy who said he was a democrat and now he is now said socialismhe is taking over america. There will always be socialist elements in america and in most governments. That is all i have to say. Host claremont, california, democrats line. Caller thank you. I want to add to what the last caller just said. Stop spreading false news. People need to start paying attention to facts. Here is something we need to do also. We need to get more people to vote. If we get everyone to vote, go to the popular vote, eliminate Electoral College we will not have president s like donald trump anymore. Host chesterfield, virginia is where van is. Democrats line. Caller how are you doing . A couple of things to say. Im a combat veteran from vietnam. The main thing is health care. I have a 92yearold mother paying a lot of high costs for medical services. I dont understand the guy that called talking about he doesnt want socialism, but he will turn around and vote for donald trump. That one got to be right there. I think Donald Trumps day has come. All his life he has ripped people off. He asked like he is almighty god. He will meet god one day and i would hate to be in his shoes. Host that is van. If you subscribe to the politico playbook, there are lines regarding what might happen when the senate comes to impeachment. It said the Majority Leader Mitch Mcconnell can conduct an impeachment trial even if the speaker of the house does not send the articles. According to many people in the legal community. A federal prosecutor describing it, saying the constitution stipulates other times when things must be transmitted to the senate such as ratified result of the Electoral College result. It never says anything like that when it comes to impeachment. Politico. Website for the house is just about to come in for a pro forma session. No active business being done today, especially as the legislators are off for a break. They are respected back next week. That will start shortly. Harold in california, independent line. Very quickly please at the house is about to come in. Caller i would like to Say Something about the environment and that is putting ammonia in the water. It is killing the coral reefs in florida, all the way up to causing alzheimers and people. They need to stop putting it in. It
