[cheers and applause] i have now had the opportunity to talk with senator cruz and congratulate him on his victory and wish him well going forward. what i pledged on behalf of all of us is that in this time of division with the country as polarized as i can remember it in my life, all of this , if there is anything we can do to help them in his position of public trust to ensure that texas helps lead the country in a way that brings us back together around big things we want to achieve, whether that is making sure we face any threat against this country or that we are there for every single person who needs a helping hand so we can let your full potential, the ability to see a doctor and receive medication you need, i want to work with him. i will work with anyone to make sure we lead on the. -- lead on that. you amazing public school educators who work so hard and do so much for so many of us, i will work with him or with anyone, anytime, anywhere, to make sure that the same way you have been there for us, we will be there for you. not as republicans or democrats, but as texans and americans. i want to make sure that this community the raised me and made , where amy and i are fortunate enough to be raising our kids who are here with us tonight, that we offer our couragece, perspective, .n the issues we know best we will form something powerful, magical, i nothing to apologize for. i want to make sure that this proud community offers has to get the country and -- give to our country and to ensure our best days are still ahead and the policies and laws we craft and the way we treat each other comes not out of fear, but out of confidence and strength in the kind hearts i have always known el paso to have. el paso, i love you so much. [cheers and applause] >> that was democratic candidate beto o'rourke and el paso, his concession speech after losing to ted cruz. >> some interesting numbers in these governors races. we began in wisconsin. scott walker is trying to seek a third term and you can see how close it is. the numbers just came up. essentially tied with fewer than 2000 votes separating tony evers over republican scott walker. ohio, race is getting a lot of attention. cordray, obama campaigned for him. mike dewine is now on his way to the statehouse as the next governor replacing john kasich. nearly 51% of the vote. kobach has been defeated by laura kelly with 97% of the vote in the kansas senate race. all these results are available on our website. isgeorgia, stacey abrams hoping to make history but brian lead with 93%able of the vote in. in iowa, many thought kim reynolds would go down to defeat but she is holding onto her lead over the democratic candidate in iowa. 85% of the votes are in. in addition to the results on speeches, on our website they are available also on demand. democrats have regained control of the house of representatives and republicans increase the majority in the u.s. senate. peter: you mentioned iowa. there is also a congressional race and steve king has been reelected after facing backlash for support of white nationalists. you've been very patient on the lines and we want to hear your voices. wayne is in texas. hello. listening. texas, one ofrom the red states. we just do not see it the way you guys do. beto o'rourke was a great representative but it comes down to whether it is red or blue. and i just do not get it. we're all americans at seems past the partget of if you are republican, black, would -- white. it should not be that way. this is a movement in texas in this red state. he has made such a ground roots i believend i can say we are making headway to make sure people think a different way. we need to come together. people.to be one i hope we can do that but i do not understand when ever i hear it on tv, it is one way or another way. why can't we just come together and be one america? that is the most is heartening thing when i got off the phone and i hear you talk and someone calls or talks on the dd and is saying they are -- someone talks on the tv saying they are republican or democrat. even if we disagree on certain , why can't we just be american? >> who did you vote for in the senate race? caller: i voted for beto o'rourke. i am sad. this ground roots effort was really done for that guy and i listened to him a few times in texas. he was captivating. he resonated with me and a lot of people. i looked at different things he believed in. same things with ted cruz. it never came down to it someone is black or white, republican or democrat. a lot of times, especially in texas, a lot of us down here believe that if you are ready you will vote red. blue will vote blue. why does it have to be that way? >> let's leave it there. let's hear from tony in greenville, north carolina. where do we go from here? >> what do you mean? caller: the government. >> what do you mean? caller: i think the government. >> all tell you what. let's move on to george in burbank, california. caller: everything is good here. we had interesting results on a proposition 10 to expand the localities rent control authority on the ability to implement rent control. it appears to be defeated. we also had a proposed price cap for dialysis services which appears to be defeated. afraidlling because i am of the rising partisanship in the country and i feel like we thiseaching a boil at point. it will ramp up following the 2020 election. best case scenario, the two parties and of becoming for parties after the process is over -- four parties after the process is over. that offer voters a greater choice and more competition among the political parties. rs decide thee election. a lot of people in america are or libertarian. hopefully the country comes out a better version of itself when this is done and over with but we might have some growing pains. >> who did you vote for governor? for mr. newsom. there were not many choices for me to express my opinion. often times you just see a name, a profession, and a political affiliation. that's it. they do not provide the voters a lot of information upon which to make their decision. >> george, we have dr. heard about the california ballot that is pages long. is that the case this year? caller: yes. there was a lot of good information on the propositions but when it came to the candidates, there was not a lot of good information sent to the voters. i know the california secretary of state spent a lot of money advertising and putting information on the website for voters who wanted to learn more about their options. that was a good move. i think they should err on the side of giving more rather than less information. >> thank you. fallinank, governor mary has a low approval rating and seneca street. congratulations for being elected oklahoma's governor here in i wish him the best of luck and will do everything i can to make sure he has a smooth transition. mr. stitt is the mayor of oklahoma city. mike is in st. paul, minnesota. caller: i will make the short and sweet. i am a republican for minnesota but i wish we had 100 senators like joe manson from west virginia. >> did you hear his speech tonight? caller: yes. disappointedty that the democrats are taking over the house. >> why? caller: i don't know. all, -- um, not senate. the house. the republicans were doing so good that the house for like a few hours, and -- >> looks like mazie hirono will be reelected for senate. the democratic candidate for governor will be elected as well. caller: yeah, i am disappointed on that. i voted for the republicans of hawaii. i'm sorry if i keep stuttering. this is my first time being on television. >> how old are you? caller: menendez. i had fun. >> why was it fun? caller: going out there and doing your civic duty. your duty changes things and adds and helps in a positive way. not doing anything is just like not doing anything. why did you vote for senator menendez? >> there has to be a balance. caller: there has to be checks and balances. people who feel like they have full reign of the situation, but i want to talk about two things. , i did notd hugin like the ads. i do not think we should be able to have that type of ads. .here should be more debates especially we have youtube and facebook but there should be no reason why people in the communities know what is going on in here from the candidate and hold them accountable. and i think there should be voter education in school. kids should not have to wait until they are like 18 to make decision on the future. they should be already used to that type of decision-making. >> what do you do? i want to give a shout out to the jet. -- bob menendez says we are a step closer to stopping attacks on new jersey. we have a lot of work ahead of us but i could not have done it without you. tomorrow we get back to work. mccaskillday, claire made her concession speech in missouri. she was defeated by josh hawley. here she is. [applause] >> thank you. while. going to take a i have a big family. they are still coming. still coming. [applause] i wanted to come down and say a few words about what happened today and how the future is brighter than we think it is right now. it is. we had some good results tonight. democrats took the house of representatives. [cheers and applause] we have governors who are democrats now in illinois and kansas. so there were some bright spots. obviously, we fall short and that is disappointing. not for me, but what i feel the most pained about is all the people who, for the first times for many of them, said, i will do more than just sit on the couch. i will show up. i will work hard. for the thousands of people who volunteered on the campaign, and there were literally thousands of thousands of thousands of you, i am so grateful. i want you to keep the fire burning. there is justice around the corner. [cheers and applause] want to thank the amazing campaign staff. we ran the strongest campaign in the country and they did an amazing job. [applause] family.o thank my they have put up with a lot, especially the sky -- this guy. [applause] know when he fell in love with me what was in store for him. he said he was not sure he wanted to be married to a politician. i said it would be fine. he has really had to endure, especially in this campaign. it was terrible with they tried to do to him. they were nasty. it was terrible. and these are my siblings and children and stepchildren and a small part of my grandchildren. many of them are to young to be up this late. so how can i look to the future and be anything but the last -- but blessed? right? [applause] but i want to say my biggest thing to the people of missouri. >> we love you, claire. we love you. everything you have done. claire mccaskill: beginning when i was 28, missouri has allowed me to serve the public, to be a public servant. for decades, i have been blessed to get up every day and work in a challenging and interesting job, trying to make things better in people's lives. it has been such an honor. the state drives me crazy, but i love every corner of it. i even love the reddest of the red counties and there were a lot of them tonight. it is because the people of the state are down to earth and kind. they are like family to me. i feel like we have run a lot of elections together, missouri and me. i don't have a bad record. applause]d times, the experts said we cannot win but because of the people of missouri, we did. josh well.o wish i called him and congratulated him. but i want to think missouri for giving me the opportunity to serve for as long as i have. i feel good about that service. i think i have made a difference that he moments in key ways -- --key moments. i know my mouth gets me in trouble a lot but i have had to be careful. not anymore. [cheering] i will be out there fighting with you. i am not going away. i will continue to serve. i love the state. there are candidates who will stand for elections in the state and win and i look forward to helping to nurture the next generation of leaders for values we care about and for now, it is the night, but it is -- it is good night, but it is not goodbye. thank you so much for all you have done. thank you. thank you. [cheers and applause] claire.e, claire, >> that was senator claire mccaskill in st. louis earlier this evening. >> i want to share with you in weas the second district have another democratic it up in the state. we will focus on the number races in california where results are now coming in beginning in the 10th district where jeff denham is the republican can -- incumbent and holding onto a narrow lead over josh harter. -- adie hill is tied with steve knight. 30% of the votes are now in. in the 39th in california, the democrats hoped to pick up over the republican candidate for right now the republicans are holding on in the 39th district. 20% of the votes have been reported. mimi walters is being challenged by kitty porter -- katie porter. has 52% of the vote. in the 50th district duncan hunter has been holding onto a lead in the race with 36% of vote reported. let's focus on california and what you are seeing in san diego. what we are seeing is republicans not getting quite the results they out for. -- they hoped for. and 49 are very much in play. but districts they would have expected to win handily. in the 50th, it is the most interesting in california right now. the is duncan hunter incumbent under indictment by the fbi for money laundering. one of the most republican leaning districts in the state. currently he is holding on to an 8% lead over his challenger. it is expected to be a close race. >> let's talk about recruitment efforts by the democrats, especially in orange county. is it paying off? >> i think so. haveof the candidates things to recommend them. it is not just an issue of national support. i think the fact that democrats got such a bump in the 50th has helped them across the board. -- fact >> how closely have been following the texas race? sessions did not even face a democratic challenger in 2016. he is the foreign hound of the national republican congressional campaign committee -- he is the head. >> i have not been following that race but it is the same lesson we are getting here. in these cycles, there tends to be a national sentiment where leadership, even people and leadership are not necessarily safe. we are seeing that in california. diego and up in orange county that used to be such a republican stronghold, duncan hunter might be the only san diego county republican to be coming out of this on top. it is interesting and a time of realignment. we just heard from claire mccaskill in missouri. josh hawley is the new republican senator. it was a swing state in a closely fought race. what was your observation about why josh one -- won? >> we have seen this is a tossup. for a long time it has been expected to be a very close race. that is not the impression i had talking to any of the republicans in the state over the past week. prior to that, they sought as being a swing state. -- they saw it as being a swing state. madeaire mccaskill overtures to moderate voters, that backfired and republicans saw it as an area where they might be able to win by a substantial margin. i think that happened. missouri has gotten better -- read --redder. that is the bottom line. was to democratic of a democrat to be able to win in missouri. >> what is the headline that comes out of the result tonight? what is your take away? >> the most interesting thing to is that it is nice to see an election cycle where everything is not completely out of control. the polling seemed to be accurate and the things we expected to happen by and large happened. it does not make for a germanic night but it is night -- night but- dramatic things might be returning to normalcy. thank you for being with us. you mentioned the attorney general race in minnesota. doug wardlaw has lost. that race became personal. one more look at texas 32. pete sessions has been defeated. a democratic pickup and that texas district. >> all of the debates are available to watch online on c-span.org. heidi heitkamp was defeated in north dakota by republican congressman kevin cramer. here was his victory speech. ♪ >> thank you. thank you all. thank you all very much. out to helpr coming celebrate with us. it would be impossible, it is impossible, for me to express the depth of my gratitude for some any people tonight. many in this room throughout the state and country. best to try to say thanks -- to say thank you to as many as possible. our family has been on quite a journey this year. no mistake about it. after more than one year of persuasion, and i just got off the phone with president trump. senator mcconnell called just before vice president pence called and just before trump called. clear that itery was a long year of courtship. decisionme down to the in early january after the oval office meeting with a bunch people. and i said no. and we meant it. it was a sincere rejection of the idea to run for senate because i love the people's house. kelley armstrong, you are going to love the people's house. [applause] and i really felt that was where i could best serve. january, there was a fateful vote. the vote to ban late-term abortions failed and a very --ss celebration took floor took place on the floor of the u.s. senate about its failure. stakeholders told me i had to reconsider. in early february, the president he said, kevind and chris, stop thinking about yourselves and start thinking about your country. [applause] knewat point, chris and i it was no longer about us or our family. it was about something much larger. so we made the decision to run for the senate. never once looked back or regretted it, not for a second. [applause] there was an energy and optimism from the very minute we announced this very moment right now, the likes of which i have never experienced. the prayers went up and held us up and we feel them tonight. , we lost ajourney son. walked through that very deep valley, we never felt up oran, more prayed surrounded in our lives. we knew then what we know now. we belong to a very special community and we are part of a family that unites us by the goodthat we serve a really god. [applause] so tonight, our thanks starts there. we thank him. we honor him. we glorify him with the prayer i pray many times a day. quite simply, thank you, jesus. thank you, jesus. [applause] out the thank yous, and i promise i will not name everyone, you know that chris kramer managed everyone of my successful congressional campaigns. [applause] swamp could never quite embrace the concept. my opponent viciously attacked her for it and i am one member of congress who stand here tonight, grateful she is still my wife and still undefeated. [cheers and applause] i am surrounded tonight by most of my family. sisters,rothers, nieces and nephews, children and grandchildren. it is really cool. everyone gives a great deal. i learned something from senator mark andrews when i was a staffer working for him. any one person can lose a race all by themselves, but no one can win a race by themselves. this family is evidence. [applause] there are multiple parades every weekend in north dakota. it takes a lot of kramers to cover the parades and they did it. they were the best at putting up signs and finding locations. we are so grateful to our family. tribute to ao pay group of people, some of whom have been with me since day one in washington. high official staff led by my chief of staff who is here tonight. he runs the shop on washington. lisa gibbons, our state director is with us tonight. [applause] politics is good policy and these folks have been taking care of business by taking care of people and policy. i am honored that this victory belongs to them as much as a belongs to anyone because my shop and my office and our service in the u.s. house of representatives is what made this victory possible tonight, as much as anything. so thank you to my official staff. [applause] and to my campaign team led by the very able direction of chris kramer, she is still undefeated. [applause] , thentire consultant team staff, the volunteers, imagine this. 521 -- 5:1.pent hard work will be chuck schumer's money every single day of the week. [applause] you give me a bunch of hard-working north dakota volunteers and you can have all of the hollywood and wall street people you want. you will never beat us. besides that, putting up a whole bunch of money to push a bad message only makes it worse, not better. i also want to thank our president, donald trump, vice president mike pence and their team, senator mcconnell, senator holden who has been a great mentor and champion and the entire republican caucus. they have been very helpful. but i want to pay special tribute to our president. he made a lot of promises. he promised to never forget railamerica. -- real america. our vice president has been here three times. officials have been here multiple times. because they will not forget the once forgotten and i am grateful that donald trump nose and remembers the heartland of america. applause]d i have had the opportunity to work with several republican governors. i was a young chairman and i appreciated a history lesson. in 1992 i was a 30-year-old chairman of the republican party. i just saw john a little bit ago. i think back to the days when democrats had the governorship for 28 of the previous 32 years in a state. they had a maturity and the legislator and every office in the capital except for three. i was the young chairman and along came at schaeffer. -- ed schafer. not alwayshat we did have to be a democratic state. , 100%. [applause] to those whose shoulders i have stood on, thank you. to my statewide colleagues and , i congratulations to you all and i look forward to serving with you. and from the bottom of my heart, thank you to the people of north dakota. [applause] you have been a shining example to this country. , in i speak in washington will quote a famous newsman who said north dakota is a blank spot of nations consciousness. and now we are the nations spotlight. you have proven what can be done with hard work want you to know you have given me the honor of my life when you let me serve in various capacities. it has been one of the greatest pleasures to serve as north dakota's only member of the people's house. north dakota's have taught me the value of hard work and common sense. me be the most accessible member of congress i can be. i want to make this promise to all of you whether you voted for me or you did not. as your senator, i will continue to be the most accessible member of the united states congress through every means possible. without you, i am nothing. with you, i am everything. thank you, god bless north dakota. [applause] ♪ >> congressman cramer, now senator elect cramer beat the incumbent heidi heitkamp by 55 to 45%. heidi heitkamp from fargo earlier this evening. [cheers and applause] [chanting 'heidi'] >> thank you, all of you. what a night. let me tell you first off how incredibly proud i am of the team we put on the field. all our candidates and the wonderful legislative candidates i met. .e offered an alternative in many cases we are hopeful that alternative will be picked. in my case it is not. it is time to come back home to north dakota, continue our work for the state, and continue our work for the people. that's what this has always been about. [applause] i first want to thank my family. you don't get into these races without a great, great support group, an and credible support group. i want all my family to come up and wave one last goodbye and say thank you to these incredible volunteers and incredible people we have here. i am so proud of my family. so proud of the contributions they make every day to the people of north dakota and the work they do. they really are incredible. [applause] the second group i want to thank is this incredible campaign staff. we knew when we started this was a big headwind. well, so and so is going to have a tough time because they were in an plus eight districts, i said, i am in a plus 36 district. we knew it was going to be tough and we knew we took some votes a lot of people would criticize. life in 2000,blic i told myself i did not take every opportunity every time to do the right thing, to do the thing i thought was the best thing. a lot of times i did the thing that was the easy thing or the thing i was afraid i would be criticized for. most of you know i had a health scare. after that, i decided you only have one chance in life and you have to make decisions you think are the best decisions for the , and mostr the future importantly, the best decisions for our children. i went washington, d.c. not to rubberstamp any political party, not to take it easy decision. i went to washington, d.c. to represent the people of north dakota the best way i could. [applause] i also want to thank libby schneider. [applause] give a wave, libby. i won't make you come up. she has been a great team leader. she has run on that's incredible race that had incredible headwinds, and we knew that. enormously proud of the team she put together. i cannot tell you, driving round north dakota and speaking with people, how incredibly important it was that they represent me on the ground the way i wanted to be represented. i think they were enormously energetic and dizzy ethic and so theeful, so grateful for welcoming they were given by north dakota's in every corner of the state. second, i want to thank my incredible legislative staff and congressional staff. [applause] they will go on to bigger and better things. they have learned a lot. i think they have learned a lot about north dakota. i think they have learned a lot about our incredible people. i think they have been really honored to serve the people of north dakota, whether it is getting veterans their benefits or whether it is looking at social security and making sure people were entitled to their benefits. --ill tell you [applause] you, they are an incredible group of people and an incredibly talented people. i hope that many of them, especially the north dakota's, will dig deeper and find a path forward. the people of north dakota really believed -- deserve their leadership. they have served this state so well. finally, i want to thank my husband, who has been with me. [applause] who has been with me for a lot of years. with me on a regular an introvert,four married a wife who has a pretty extroverted career. that has been really tough. for me, this has been the honor of a lifetime. serving as north dakota's senator. [applause] i have met so many great and good people. i have fought for these people and for my state in a way that i , butmakes all of you proud most importantly, make the state of north dakota proud. and so elections are won and lost, trends come and go, and the world revolves again tomorrow. what i want to leave you with this, for so many of the young people who got engaged, it seems like such a better thing to lose a race. the worst thing would be to not ever run at all. to not ever try. [applause] to simply say that is too hard, or the state is to read. there is always an excuse to not try. what i like to believe in this race, regardless of the outcome, that because we've put the protections of pre-existing conditions on the table, they will never put away -- take away your pre-existing conditions. [applause] exposed, i think, a plan to reduce the social security and medicare, they had to say, we would never do that. they will live up to the promise of saying they would never do that. finally, i understand, but i want to sound the warning i have been sounding all along. times are tough on the farm. when times are tough on the farm they eventually become tough in our country. what i would tell you is we have to have a policy that works for the farmers of our state. that may not always be following one political party. it may not always be making sure you are supporting a political idea as opposed to the right idea. the presidentpe will not take this defeat as an ff policyf why his tari is a good idea. it is wrong for north dakota. [applause] so we live to fight on and sometimes the older generation takes an exit. we have had an incredible experience here. i have been so proud to represent the state and i am so gratified for those six years of opportunity that i had to do the work of the people. i'm so glad for the years of opportunity i have had to tell the people there is a different path. remember all the times we touched human lives, whether it was handing out a metal, taking the worry away from a family member who was worried about pre-existing conditions or their medicaid. that was really important work. because of that, there are a lot of people who are better off today. i am enormously proud of that. [applause] i want you to remember, we may have lost an election, but we have not lost our enthusiasm for the state of north dakota. we have not lost our enthusiasm for the future of our state. we have not lost our enthusiasm for political activism and for preventing -- presenting a different point of view. that is important. when will come a time someone will stand on this podium representing this political party and declare victory as the next governor, declare victory as the next united states senator, declare victory as the next attorney general. we will not give up. we will not give up. we will not give up. we will not give up. we will not give up. we will not give up. i love you all, god bless you, god bless the united states of america and this great state. [applause] announcer: senator heitkamp is one of four democratic senators who have lost this evening. hi chris, mccaskill, donnelly, and nelson, all of whom voted against brett kavanaugh. now in the house, the democrats will take control. here is the official number. a lot of california seat, west coast seats not declared. the democrats have 200, republicans have 183. -- jimebecca kaplan clyburn, the number three democrat in the house, will send a letter to colleagues announcing his intention to run he will notic whip challenge pelosi or foyer for the top spot. >> in ohio's first congressional district, it was one that was getting a lot of attention. the republican holding onto that with 100% of the vote now reporting. virginia seven, this is a race that was getting a lot of national attention. this is a loss for congressman dave brat. he defeated cancer four years or four years ago. this is a district out of richmond. with 99% ofberger the vote in that district, it is just over 50%. out west, a couple of races. washington state -- utah, i should say, then make adam -- adam.-- ben mc state, thewashington democratic candidate is beating at the moment the republican challenger in the eighth congressional district with 53% of the vote reporting. in california's 48 congressional district, the democratic candidate, now edging congressman dana rohrabacher, that was a big win for the democrats in that race. a number of those orange county races could tip the balance and give a cushion for the democrat as leader pelosi regains the gavel presumably as the next speaker of the house. all of these results on our website and the speeches we have been getting in the key house, senate, and governors races, the returns also available online. down in tennessee, marsha blackburn is the senate elect. vote.n 54% of the we want to show you both her victory and his concession speech. [applause] their interest in this campaign, their support, i have already talked to vice president pence. and mrs. pence. they are excited for our family. they are excited for our state. they are excited for our country. just as i said on day one of this campaign, i was running to take those values we share and to work in d.c. on the things you want to see done. more constitutional judges, lower judges, less -- taxes, less regulation, making sure we protect life, that we defend the , get federalent spending under control, and that we support our troops and our and to make certain that we build the wall. [applause] thank you all very much. i applied for the job but i got a rejection letter here. not from you, you are right. i would like to say a couple of things. first of all, i did try to call marsha blackburn before i came down. she was on stage, but i want to take this opportunity to congratulate her on her when -- win. [booing] no, really. elections are over. we move on. the campaign staff i had could not have been better. [applause] i really want to thank them. even in addition to that, this race for me had something i had never seen before. that was the extent of the volunteer activity. we had 5000 plus volunteers working all the time. one million doors knocked on. it was incredible. i want to say to each one of those volunteers, this is not anything of your doing. you have gone above and the on and done everything you possibly could to make this race right. the fault here, if there is a fault, lies with me for not making the case i needed to make in tennessee. and thehe volunteers people on the campaign staff to know how much i appreciate and honor what you have done. [applause] and i want to say one particular word to all the young people who worked on this campaign. it actually surprised me, the number of young people and it encouraged me about the future of our country and democracy, the kind of energy and idealism people had. i have one word for you, or some words. please do not be discouraged. your idealism is amazing. [applause] phil: keep working. have had a i wonderful time in politics. i had a great run as mayor. i want them to remember when i became mayor of nashville, that was the fourth race i had run in until i won one. i want young people to know how important it is to the future of our country that you not get discouraged, that you stay engaged, that you never ever give up. [applause] ofl: finally, on behalf andrea and myself, what an incredible privilege has been to serve the people of tennessee and what an incredible privilege it has been to have been considered for this opportunity. i love my state of tennessee and my country. i thank you all for everything you have done. [applause] >> that was the former governor of tennessee who got defeated by 10.5 congressman marsha blackburn. >> we want to look at the governor's races. no big surprise in california, where the lieutenant governor kevin newsom was easily elected to succeed jerry brown, who has the distinction of being the youngest and the oldest governor ,ver, having served four terms not consecutive, now kevin newsom taking over. in colorado the first openly gay governor, democrat, now on his way to the statehouse in colorado. earning just over 51% compared to 45% for walker stapleton. in wisconsin this has been a tough race. look at the numbers. 98% of the vote reporting. you can see a 1000 vote difference between tony evers trying to unseat governor scott walker, who is vying for a third term in wisconsin. , this ish in illinois again for the democrats over the republican incumbent. pritzker is the new governor. that has been declared by the associated press. in ohio, a closely fought race where the former u.s. senator mike dewine is the winning candidate. in georgia, this race has not been declared, but brian kemp has been holding onto a lead with 96% of the vote now reporting over democrat stacey abrams hoping to make history as the first african-american woman to be elected as governor. oprah winfrey campaigning last week was not enough to help her so far. daniel strauss following all of this for politico. let's talk about the georgia governors race. what is your takeaway? >> at this point the abrams team does not expect to make any definitive announcement tonight. thatcomes despite the fact throughout the entire night, brian kemp has led. it is looking like the abrams team is really hoping they can leverage a runoff. skim enough of cap's leadoff he will not have 50%, the support he needs. and that he will go into a runoff. >> it is surprising, though, has held a- kemp commanding margin. >> as you look at the results , where areof georgia the strongholds for brian kemp? >> the strongholds are outside the major metropolitan areas. outside atlanta, outside savannah, outside a few other big georgia states. well. done very he has managed to turn a large segment of republican voters and actually what is keeping him afloat here. >> as you look at the overall results, we have been talking about the governor's race, democrats regaining control, anywhere from 30 to 35 seats depending on california, republicans picking up sell -- seats in the u.s. senate. what are the stories we will be talking about later this morning and later this week? >> one of the big takeaways is big -- theres a are a lot of women candidates andght in governors races senate races, but it is not just republican women or democratic women. we are seeing more elected officeholders that are women in these arenas. is a little confusing, i have to be honest. very calm,est, almost anodyne immigrant candidates were able to win two key races they needed. iowa and ohio. wisconsin remains close. beyond that, also, we started this cycle with the possibility --t high african-americans five african-americans could be elected governor. we know tonight except for abrams, there will be no -- there will definitely be enough -- the no new african-american governors. gillum's became ,he nominee and ron desantis there was really a perfect test of a liberal versus a theervative, somebody from bernie sanders wing of the democratic party and somebody who embraced donald trump, ron desantis, the winner. if you look at the result and what that tells you about the state of the parties moving ahead, what are your thoughts? >> it is surprising. i think there were extenuating into mayor gillum's finances. i do not have a strong sense that -- there is no silver bullet between candidates who were more moderate. say.really hard to in terms of 2020 it is clear democrats do not have a simple answer. >> daniel strauss, who is following this for politico. thanks for being with us early on a wednesday morning as we assess the results. quick fix for having me. -- >> thanks for having me. >> andrew gillum was in his home city of tallahassee conceding the race. we will watch that and later we will hear from ron desantis declaring victory. part of our coverage on this election night. it is quite a treat to see you are still here. of chris and kristin, family, we could not be prouder of the way we ran this race. thankfulnot be more for the support that was shown by each and every one of you all the way along this path. we recognize we did not win it tonight. we did not win this transaction. i want you to know that is just it. a transaction. what we believe and still holds true. -- believe in holds true. oftand here on the highest hills in tallahassee florida. the campus that gave so much to me and to my wife. a day for those students who were around when we were here, we marched plenty of times from this very step up to the capital. we let our voices be heard. we spoke truth to power. just because we did not always come out victorious, we did not retreat. we stood up. we stood strong. we spoke out. we recognized we had power, too. earlier this evening i called mr. ron desantis and congratulated him on what we expect will be him as the next governor of the great state of florida. [booing] mayor gillum: but i want you to know that in spite of our congratulating him on his victory this evening, nothing we believe in is compromised. still believe we ought to pay teachers what they are worth. i still believe that. [applause] mayor gillum: i still believe we ought to clean up our environment, our beaches, our sure. -- shore. i still believe we should have the kind of economy where people can work one job instead of two or three to make ends meet. the people of the state of florida decided to pass amendment for. -- amendment four. [applause] mayor gillum: i am proud of that. that is one step closer to where we need to be. i want to encourage you not to give up. i want to encourage you to stick to the fight. i want you to know that every step of the way, even though i won't have the blessing of serving as the next governor, i still plan to be on the front lines alongside every single one of you when it comes to standing up for what it is we believe in. as i said along the campaign trail, policy is nothing without a demand. it never has and never will. we have to be willing to show up every single day and demand our seat at the table. we have got to be willing inside elections and outside elections to say that our voices still matter, that we still have relevance. i still believe and i still trust the voters. we may not have all showed up the way we thought and hoped we would. believe there are more of us who believe in what is common and decent and right. i believe in the long run good wins out over evil. [applause] talkof you heard me repeatedly about my grandmother. someone pointed out she was the real winner of the governor's race. my grandmother, who poured so much into us. my mother and father, as i would often share, would have to get up so early in the morning and go off to work, they would load us up in the car and take us to my grandmother's house where we would sleep a little bit longer. my grandmother would often have a ritual, a two-step ritual. the first phase is that she would grab her bottle of olive ,il, sometimes cooking oil whatever the shiniest oil she could get her hands on was, and a crossd put across -- across our forehead. then she would have this refrain where she would say, go to school. mind your teachers. get your lesson and bring that education home. she would say bring it home for your little brother and little sister. bring it home for that little boy down the street. she said bring it home for your who go outur daddy there every day to keep roof over your head and close on your back and food on the table. bring it home. i shared with you on the campaign trail, i did not know what my grand mother was trying to communicate, but i would learn that what she was saying is it was not just about me. i'm reminded this evening it is not about me. not not about my wife, kristin, this is all of us. the collective. the believe that if we all do good, we can all do good. we can do good by doing good. that if we all put our oars in the water and row in the same direction we can get further than by ourselves. i still believe that to be true even in defeat. i believe that to be true. the question is, we have a choice to make tomorrow morning. are we going to wake up and bask in sorrow and defeat or are we going to get up and reassert ourselves to the mission at hand? are we going to fight for the things we believe in? are we going to get up and say we still deserve our seat at the table? i have said it before that i believe we have to have a table in this state that is long enough, wide enough, deep enough to fit all of us. i still believe we have got to have that. we are just going to have to do a little bit more work in order to build that table. we're going to have to do a little bit more to make our way to it. ,f there is not a chair for us let's pull of our own. we plan to have a seat at this thing and we will not be ignored. we will not be pushed aside. we will not be pushed into the shadows anymore. we are here, and we are here to stay. i am blown away by the volunteers that joined with us on the trail. i am blown away by you. [applause] mayor gillum: this was from the beginning and extremely difficult path. i sincerely regret i could not bring home for you. [applause] but -- [cheering] mayor gillum: but i can guarantee you this. i am not going anywhere. [applause] mayor gillum: where going to fight. we are going to keep fighting. we're going to keep working. we're going to keep believing. i believe that ultimately we will be victorious. we will be victorious. i want you to know on behalf of our family that we are so appreciative and thankful for you and we want you to know we are going to continue to lift our great state in prayer, our great nation in prayer, and we believe that the end of the day that we, not us, but we will still have the victory. god bless you, god keep you, and god bless the state of florida and this great country we call home. take care, everybody. [applause] a very formidable opponent and i wish him well in his future endeavors. other than serving our nation in uniform, the opportunity to serve as the 46th governor of is great state of florida the greatest professional honor of my life. thank you, the people of florida, for your support and your trust you have placed in me. not bad for a kid who started out making six dollars an hour. throughout the campaign i knew the only thing i could fully control was how hard i worked. while i was confident, i was at peace knowing i worked as hard as i possibly could and i left everything out on the field. [applause] gov. elect desantis: when he spoke to the ohio regiment toward the end of the civil war, abraham lincoln told the soldiers assembled before him that the free government for which they were fighting provided everyone with an open field and fair chance for their industry, enterprise, and intelligence. lincoln was born on the frontier in obscure circumstances, yet he rose to the highest office in the land. living proof that these ideals were worth the sacrifice. governor in the nation's third-largest state is further proof that regardless of where you started life, if you work hard, if you do it for the right reason, you can succeed in the united states of america. [applause] gov. elect desantis: when casey and i lost this -- launched this in january, the pundit class give us no chance. even today the media class team eager to write our obituary. the great thing about our country is every two years the people have that one day in november where the elites don't call the shots, where they don't get to craft the narrative and set the agenda. [applause] gov. elect desantis: on election day it is the voice of the people that rules. [applause] as governoresantis: i will make sure florida remains a low tax state. [applause] we will hold people and government accountable. dollarsprotect taxpayer . we will ensure floridians from all walks of life have that open field and fair chance to realize their dreams. high-techof you in states who may be thinking of investing in florida, please know we will remain open for business. and we will save you a lot in taxes if you bring your investment to florida. there's a lot of people i have to thank and unfortunately i can't thank everyone. i can tell you this. my most mexican and valued supporter -- significant and valued supporter is standing right next to me, my wife. [applause] gov. elect desantis: we met by years at a driving range ago and she has been my best friend. she is the best life anybody could ever have and i very much hope, and i think i will be a great governor, but i can guarantee you florida will have the best first lady in the country. [applause] i would also like to thank my parents for all they did for me, especially my mother, a retired nurse. we have two kids under two. when you are running for governor in this massive state, has helped that she has been here helping us get through this process. i want to thank her. i also want to thank the volunteers we had throughout the state of florida. [applause] is, i am putting up the ideas in the leadership, but you are the ones that made this victory happen. you knocked on doors, you made calls, and you sent me your prayers across the state of florida. one of the reasons i worked so hard is because i saw you working hard and i did not want to let you down. i also want to thank our campaign staff, who works very hard throughout this process starting with our campaign best in suzy wiles, the the business. she worked, and everyone worked so hard. i want to think our wonderful lieutenant governor elect, jeanette nuñez. [applause] when wect desantis: started the campaign and she got on the ticket, she was kind of our secret weapon. i think now her force and presence has been witnessed by the entire state and people know we are getting a special woman to be her lieutenant governor. [applause] be. elect desantis: she will , when she takes office, the highest ranking hispanic female in the history of the state of florida. [applause] i would also like to thank governor rick scott for his leadership as governor. we have a lot of opportunities in florida, particularly building a stronger economy. to the in large part due hard work of rick scott for eight years focusing on bringing florida's economy back. we have not reached our potential, but governor scott has done a great job for the people of the state of florida. finally, i would like to thank our president for standing by me when -- [applause] gov. elect desantis: for standing by me when it was not necessarily the smart thing to do. mr. president, i look forward to working with you to advance florida's priorities. you are going to get tired of me calling you, but i think we will have a great partnership. [applause] i'm excited for the opportunities for florida. i'm excited to be able to serve as the leader of the state. iraq, it did not matter where fellow service members came from, what they look like. we all wore the same american flag patch. we never thought about which of the folks back home we were fighting for, republicans, democrats, we stood for all americans. campaigns are rough business that are often about highlighting our differences. unfortunately in this day and age they spiral into outright demagoguery. but governing is about getting things done on behalf of the people in florida. improving our water quality and environments. promoting public safety. expanding education opportunities. we need to build a florida that is safer and stronger and that will be my guiding light. you can count on me if you are a low income family and you are relying on a step up for student scholarship for your child to have education. you can count on me to keep that going. if you are somebody who is interested in protecting the environment, you can count on me to stand for clean water, fight red tides, and restore the everglades. [applause] floridians can count on me to keep taxes low and to drive more investment into the state of florida. we can have significant gains in , thatcturing technology will mean a broader economic base, higher-paying jobs. you end up raising more money for the government so you can do things for environment and education. law enforcement can count on me to stand by them. [applause] i waslect desantis: honored to have support from almost every law enforcement agency workers in florida. there was not a single campaign stop i did not go where someone in uniform did not come up to me and say, we are counting on you. i appreciate the job you do to keep floridians safe. [applause] gov. elect desantis: as a veteran, floridians can count on me to stand up for our active duty military mission in the state of florida and for our great veterans who have done so much. [applause] gov. elect desantis: floridians can count on me to appoint solid constitutionalists to our state supreme court and other courts so that we can end judicial activism and restore the constitutional order. we've got an awful lot to do. i believe you have to turn the page on a political campaign. you have got to be willing to work with floridians from all walks of life. i want to work with you to advance our common priorities. if we think that way, the limits -- i don't think there's going to be limits to the amount of good we can do. it is an honor to be here tonight as the governor-elect. toare looking forward getting going very quickly. as we juggle two kids and all that goes with that. i promise you this. i will fight the good fight. i will finish the race. i will keep the faith on behalf of the great state of florida and the wonderful people we have here. thank you. god bless you guys. ♪ >> governor-elect ron desantis giving his speech. just north of florida is georgia. stacey abrams has are fused to concede in her campaign there. leading with 99% of the vote in. politico is reporting a record number of women will be serving in washington. at least 103 women have been elected in this election cycle. they will join the 10 women in the senate already there. that is a new record on top of the 1992 record. raceississippi senate heads to a runoff. cindy hyde-smith and mike sb will be in the runoff. that is on november 22. neither of them achieved0%
