Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome your congressman, Matt Cartwright. [applause] [cheering] thank you. We love you love you back. Is this thing on . Yes you know what, welcome to this senior high school, everybody. I want to take the liberty to give a few shout outs. I want to thank john, the principle of the high school. And the superintendent, kevin. The principal and the superintendent, there are no guarantees we will not damage or high school tonight. [laughter] rep. Cartwright but seriously, i also want to make another shout out. Someone whose presence here tonight lets you know that you are at a special event. It is the former first lady of pennsylvania, ellen casey. [applause] she is pretty important. [laughter] but then there is my wife. [applause] marian cartwright. So we have an election coming up, right . Are there any democrats in the house . [applause] democrats. Democrats. We have a job to do, dont we . We have to get out there and remind people what we are all about, dont we . I will ask you a series of questions. There is a suggested answer and that is democrats. Who is it that sticks up for the regular working people of the country . Democrats. That is right. Who always has . Sticks up for seniors . And children . And the disabled . And the environment . Clean air . Clean water . Who sticks up for labor rights in the country . Who got the kids out of the mines . Who invented Workplace Safety . How about Social Security . Costofliving increases . How about keeping medicare from turning into a Coupon Program . That is right. And expanding medicaid. So more people can be covered, who . That is right. It is the democrats. That is who. [applause] and i say smile if you are a democrat because we did these things for this country. We stuck up for all of these things. Who stuck up for civil rights in this country . And Voting Rights, who is that . And the rights for our lgbt friends . We are the ones who did that when the needle moves, who moves the needle . The democrats. That is who does it. Be proud of yourselves and realize that as democrats, i look around, and i see a lot of you, and you are my family. I am proud of you. [applause] because in the end, it isnt about us. It isnt about the officeholders and the high exalted positions we have. It is about none of that. It is about sticking up for the people. Who does that . The democrats do that. Dont ever forget it. We fell down on the job a couple of years ago, didnt we . But we will not do that this week, are we . Were going to get the vote out. We will fight for the people, the rights were talking about, the rights for the working people in the country, because it isnt about the officeholder. You have got to reelect tom, a wonderful senator. Yes. [applause] and if you think of it, give cartwright a vote, too, will you . [applause] because, if you get me reelected, remember what is at stake. You know who might win back the house of representatives this fall . The democrats. The democrats. The democrats. The democrats. Job number one, when the democrats look back on the house of representatives on tuesday, job number one when we swear in a new congress in january, a Real Infrastructure built. Infrastructure bill. Not one of these phony baloney, the federal government pays for 20 and the rest of you can go scratching for 80 percent. No. A Real Infrastructure bill done with regular appropriations and hearings and sunlight, where we can see where the money is coming from and where it is going and the people doing the work are treated right and paid fairly. Yes. We are going to do that. A Democratic House of representatives and senator bob casey in the senate, we will put a Real Infrastructure built on bill on the president s desk and he will have to sign it because it is the right thing to do for america. If we believe in this country. I am Matt Cartwright and i humbly ask for your vote on tuesday. [applause] next, it is my honor and my absolute privilege to introduce your next speaker. This man is a man you all know. He knows you. It is a man who is our senior senator from pennsylvania and the United States senate, someone who has been fighting for seniors and children and people with disabilities, workers, everybody that we care about, for civil rights and Voting Rights and all of the things democrats hold as core values, it is a man who has in a champion for these things. He has been recognized as a National Leader for children with disabilities. [applause] this is a man who has had our back ever since he got down to washington and before that. A man whose life has been about public service. A man whom i regard as a dear friend. Lets get him appear. Up here. Senator bob casey. Bob casey. Senator casey thank you very much. Thank you very much. Thank you very much. First of all, lets hear it for met cartwright. [applause] now i know you will give him a great vote on while you are giving him a good vote, give me some. I want to thank this high school and all the people here who made the visit possible. Before i get to refer marks, brief remarks, because i know some people were here to see me but there might be a few more people here to see Vice President joe biden. He is in the building. I want you to let him know how much you want to hear from him. Lets hear it for Vice President joe biden. [applause] [cheering] [chanting] run n, joe, run, joe, run senator casey pretty good. I know that we did not even practice that. I do want to say how much we appreciate, i know earlier in the program, john was here as well. Holly delaney. Representative mike carol. And so many others were here with us tonight. I want to tell you how much i appreciate you being here tonight on the eve of an election. I know a lot of people said, when they say this is the most important election of our lifetime, they always say that. Here is the truth, the way i see it. This is without a doubt, the most important Midterm Election of my lifetime. We have so much at stake. So much at stake for the middleclass, for those trying to climb to get the middleclass, so majestic for the vulnerable when you consider what could happen to medicare and medicaid and a lot of other programs. And a lot is at stake for the american worker. Put up your hand, and i can see most of the audience here, if you are a member of organized labor, thank you for being here. Thank you for being here. So much is at stake. For our veterans. Put your hand up if you are a veteran. Thank you for your service. Thank you. I just want to make a comment about health care and then i want the Vice President to come up on stage. My race has been defined by one big issue, health care. There are so many people in this county and this region that had Health Care Coverage solely because we have the guts and the determination to pass the Affordable Care act. You made that possible. Heres the latest number. Want you to know the exact number. In a lot of parts of our country, this number is unfortunately down during the administration. There are still big numbers. Lucerne county, pennsylvania 30,368 people of health care. In county, 20,264. In just two counties in northeastern pennsylvania, more than 50,000 people have health care. We will make sure they have health care tomorrow, next week, next month next year, and the next 50 years. We will fight for that. And you know what . Some republicans in washington, who all of a sudden, they really care about preexisting conditions. Isnt that nice . Why didnt they vote that way when it was on the line . Right . I am someone who has worked with a lot of republicans are a lot of big issues. The most important disability bill, whether it was to continue the good work of Vice President biden when he passed years ago and then reauthorize over and over again the violence against women act. We added to that. I like working when i can with republicans. Im pretty good at it. A lot of bills passed with republican help. They seem to be unwilling to work with us on health care. I would rather work with them to lower the cost of health care or prescription drugs. But if they want to continue to fight about this issue and continue to try and decimate the medicaid program, the kids and seniors with disabilities, if they will continue to attack and try to defund medicare over time, remember what the House Republicans did just this year in may of 2018, june to be exact, they passed a 10 year budget that will cut the medicare program. I will say again, the medicare program. More than 70,000 people, thank god, have medicare in this county. Republicans in the house want to cut that by 537 billion over 10 years. No senator casey we will stop them from doing that. That is what we are going to do. [applause] so, we have got some battles ahead. Here is what i would like to say as i introduce the Vice President. No public official i know has been a stronger advocate for people without a voice, for workers, kids, seniors. No one i know has been a stronger advocate. No one i know in public life in all of the time i have been in washington and before, has been a stronger advocate for those who need someone to stand up for them. There is a great anthem for our great hymn we all know, a great anthem for our country, america the beautiful. Remember one of those lines, a beautiful line about a patriot, o beautiful, for patriot dream, that sees beyond the years. That is what a patriot is pierce someone who sees beyond the years, whether it is supporting men and women in the uniform, whether it is supporting veterans, helping our kids, helping working families, standing up for workers when they needed and assist. Joe biden has been doing this for all of these years. We claim him as our own, a son of northeastern pennsylvania who never forgot where he came from. We are so happy he is here tonight. Vice president joe biden. [applause] vice pres. Biden hello, lucerne county. It is good to be almost home. Folks, my name is joe biden. We love you. Vice pres. Biden when you say run, joe, run, it brings back memories of bringing at the top of 5th street in scranton. In the old days when i had to run it was run away from a fight. [hoarse voice] im staying. Im not running. Folks, the bidens and the finnegans and the caseys and the cartwrights are families that go back a long way. In some cases before i was even a kid. I lived on North Washington avenue. Bobby and i trying to figure out, mom, about five blocks from your home. We went to the same church, st. Pauls, then sinclairs. And we learned our values, bobby and me, at our kitchen tables. Me at my grandfathers table at 2446 North Washington and i think bobby at his father and familys kitchen table. I campaign, which was a great privilege, got elected when i was 29 years old. One of the first outofstate campaigns i spent time campaigning was for governor casey. At that time, it was the senate race. It was a bad year. And i got to meet ellen casey. I think bobbys mother, my word as a biden, is one of the finest women i have ever met in my entire life. [applause] and bob will tell you, as we used to say in the senate, if you excuse a point of personal privilege, there was only one exception my mother. The granddaughter of one of the first Irish Catholics ever elected to the state senate in pennsylvania. Who was elected in 1904. Bobbys entire family is here. His wife tracy, who i love, carolina and julia. All of them are here. I know matts family, too. Both sides. Marion has the better part. Shes a munley. Only kidding. Got that right. Vice pres. Biden and theyre all good people. And they have the same value set, in lackawanna countys the core of where i grew up, simple value set treating people with dignity. Both these men have what is desperately needed right now and is not hyperbole. They have great character. [applause] it really matters. More impressive, personal and political records. Men of honor. They are men of their word. When they tell me they are going to do something and they half and they have and we Work Together for years, i know, i know ill not get what happens today, everything is relative today. Someone makes a commitment and say i will be there for you and when the time comes and realizing its hard, i did not know it was going to cost me this. I did not know this was the way it was going to be. I cant be there. These guys do exactly what they say. Folks, tuesday is election day, theres Something Different about this is election, as bobbys already said, something fundamental. Pretty profound. Ive traveled, as you can tell by my voice, to 22 states and campaigned for 63 candidates. [applause] and in the last six days alone i have been in now 15 towns and cities. And everywhere i go, theres an d i mean this sincerely, democrats i do what they call otrs, off the record stops, i stop into diners and churches [indiscernible shout] but among democrats, republicans, independents, think about this the republican, there is an insatiable desire for women and men with character to occupy high public office. [applause] folks, this is not your fathers Republican Party. It really is. It really isnt. This isnt the Republican Party any of you grew up with. As all three of us, if you notice any time there is trouble with our administration, i would be the guy that would go on capitol hill, because i have so Many Republican friends for real. I do not think there was a republican senator that did not treat me with respect and i have never misled them. Ive never question their motive. I question their judgment. When you question judgment, as matt knows, you can reach an agreement. You question somebodys motive and you can never get to go. And the only reason we were able to do anything in america as we arrived a consensus. That is why they are both so good at what they do. They are respected on both sides of the aisle. But here is something new. The very character of our country is on the ballot. And really, all the world is. Is looking and all the world, america is unique because we were not organized on ethnicity on a religion or tribe but on ideals. American ideals. Thats what organized us as a nation. Fairness, decency, respect, giving everyone of gods children a fair shot. Tuesday [applause] tuesday. Asking us to stand up for these american ideals again. Others do not see it that way, this new Republican Party. They see something much different and darker. Now, remember, no clapping. Just listen to me for this one. Listen to the way they speak and campaign. They seem to believe that shared American Values are some form of outdated political correctness. And committing to something bigger than ourselves is naive. Were suckers. That facts are relative. But thats not what built america, that is not what made us the greatest nation of all time on earth. America was built by leaders who had integrity and empathy for others. Think about this. Have you heard any words of empathy from a republican . I really mean it. It matters. It matters. Leaders like our military who left no one behind. The people that built america are leaders who gave hate no safe harbor. David brooks, a conservative, conservative columnist, says these ideals, he calls them the invisible more fabric that holds societies together and he says they are being shredded in this administration. Those values are being shredded. I wrote a year ago, i come out when i moved from scranton and we were, to wilmington, delaware, i only knew two africanamericans in scranton. Delaware has the eighth largest black population in america. To our great shame, we were segregated by law, we were a slave state. We fought beside the north but we were socalled border state like maryland and others. So, i come out of that. That is what got me engaged in public life. I wrote a year ago, after the horrific events in charlottesville, that we are the battle over the americas soul. And i really mean it. It is not just me. Read john meachams new book. The soul of america. We watched white supremacist, david duke, lan the neo nazis carrying torches and chance the same hateful chant the same hateful bile we heard on the streets of europe in the 30s. When the president of the alt right assigned a moral equivalence between those dark forces and those opposing them, that was like pouring fuel on the fire of intolerance. And just look, we saw the fruits came quickly. Pipe bombs sent to me in some of my friends and my granddaughters two americans, africanamericans, killed in a supermarket in kentucky because they are black. 11 jews killed in a synagogue i know well in pittsburgh. And all the vileness in one week. Folks, our children are listening. Theyre watching. So, the words of our leaders do matter. And silence is complicity. Silence is complicity. [applause] and, folks, we will not be silent. And we will not be complicit. As democrats, as democrats in this fateful election we have a single moral responsibility to confront and defeat those forces who are trying to divide us, not only for our own sake but the sake of our children. We cant, we have to stop their march. We can finish the job bara the job barack and i started. We can restore the basic economic bargain that exist in this country. The two most fundamental things to stop this vileness. And restore the bargain, a bargain to which democrats and republicans used to subscribe. The bargain that built the middle class. Here is what we have to do to restore protect the bargain. It is about jobs, decent jobs. My dad, when we moved from scranton because there was no work in delaware, hed always say when someone lost their job, joey, a jobs about a lot more than a paycheck. It is about your dignity, it is about your honor. It is about your place in the community. Its about being able to turn and look at your child and say, honey, it is going to be ok and mean it. It starts with the right to bargain for your own worth. Stop this attack on organized labor. And noncompete agreements [applause] guarantee, stop stealing overtime from hourly wager earners, costing them billions. 400 million. For gods sake, listen to since when are republicans against Building Infrastructure . We are 29th in the world in infrastructure. My god, this is the United States of america. The second thing we have to do is have access to affordable and continued education. We need to reimagine [applause] we have to reimagine the Education System for the 21st century. Educate through post high school. Does anyone think that 12 years is enough in 2020 and 2030 to have a decent job in america . ,e will include certificates Affordable Community college. Fourthly, how can you live a middleclass life as my dad did, stare at the ceiling at night, thinking my god, if i get sick, she and the kids, we lose everything. Affordable health care for families. Millions of americans, as bobby points out, understand what that means. It means you stare at that it means you dont have to stare at that ceiling, wondering if i get cancer, what happens . Bob, i love these guys. I do not even know them, i love them. They opposed the ford will care act and now they have like, you know, on the road to damascus, they have had and a conversion. They have seen the lord. They still vote the wrong way. They oppose keeping children on your insurance until they are 26. They oppose mandating Insurance Companies cover preexisting conditions to the harm of 4. 5 million pennsylvanians. Hear that . 4. 5. Folks, as bas as all this would be, these republicans have gone beyond. Even the former republican senators and congressmen, 10, 20 years ago that i worked with 30 years ago did not do this. The ultimate target of this new Republican Party is to eviscerate two most important programs to allow the elderly and retired to live a decent life. And Social Security. Medicare and Social Security. Theyve been trying to cut these programs for years, the altright. And now, because of their horrendous tax bill, not just is unfair, it added 1,900 billion more dollars to the existing deficit. You will not find one single, solitary professor at any university, left, right or center, will tell you we can carry that debt without significantly affecting american growth. So, we have to cut the deficit. The new cry. We have to cut the deficit. And look for the hatchet. As bobby pointed out, they have already put in a budget to cut over, i think, 500, over half 1 billion in medicare. Think about this. Not just, as barack says, dont boo, vote and bring five people with you. But here is the deal. Think what this means, what uncertainty this causes thinking it might happen. Think of what it does. To my mom and dad if, i did not have the job i had, they had Social Security and they had medicare. Then the majority leader mcconnell just made it very clear no, he did us a favor because he was the only one who was flat out honest. He said, in order to deal with the deficit they created, we will have to make even more cut s to medicare and Social Security. And listen to their opponents on that. Everything from costofliving to a whole range of other things. Folks, i, these guys will be saying about it. You know, you need them both there. Not a joke. You desperately need them to keep this from happening. Matts going to win again. If we do not win back the house, it is going to become law. If i told you they were going to pass that cockamamie tax bill, and tell them they would do some of the stupid things they have done, you would say no one would do that. I promise you. Im going to see something outrageous. I think i know the Senate Better than anybody living. Folks, they mean. But heres the deal, guys. We can take care of this. Sure im an optimist. That is become because i am from northeast pennsylvania. Its the only way to live, because of your pessimistic about is well just cash it all in. The truth is, the United States of america right now is better position than any nation in the world to lead the world. We have the largest economy in the world. We are energy independent. And the Strongest Military in the history of the world. The finest Research Universities in the entire world. The most productive workforce, three times as productive as they are in asia, by the way. And the most agile venture capitalists. This is not hyperbole. No other nation in the world, no other nation in the world can match us. Ive spent more time with xi jinping in china than any world leader. He would trade places in a heartbeat. They do not have enough energy, not enough water. They have a project to change the direction of a river. Theyre Walking Around with masks in beijing because they are dying at four times the rate of cancer invasion. My god, folks, where is our competition . If we remember who the hell we are. There is nothing beyond our capacity to the only thing Strong Enough to tear apart america is america itself. We have seen it started. We have to stop it. Vice pres. Biden we have to make clear that democrats, democrats choose hope over fear. Vice pres. Biden democrats choose unity over division. And most importantly, we choose truth over lies. If we can do that, we can still only to the first century. And this country has to come together. It is time to get remember this is america together, we can take it back god bless you all and may god protect our troops. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
