On facebook, its facebook. Com cspan. And a very good Tuesday Morning to you. You can start calling in now with your immigration policy priorities as we take you to ed okeefe on the phone joining us. Hes a congressional reporter with the Washington Post. You had an article earlier this week previewing the woe that the immigration debate would be playing in the current round of budget talks. At this point, does it appear hat a daca fix and immigration fixes are going to happen alongside a larger budget deal . Caller guest too soon to say but everyone seems to be heading in that direction. Some who have been working on this issue for several years and some who have been introduced with it today and they seem to be the democrat that might be willing to cut a deal with the president. The Sticking Point is how do you define the legal status socalled dreamers with changes in Border Security and what would that Border Security look like . Would it be an actual concrete wall from sea to shining sea . Or would it be some mix of old and new wall constructions, some fencing, some drone and other sort of Laser Technology to track things along the border . And what is acceptable to democrats who would like to see these changes in the status of Daca Recipients but dont feel that it should be traded for changes in Border Security that they feel as do many republicans is unnecessary. Host who are you going to be watching coming out of that meeting . Guest the two democrats are dick durbin and michael bennett. They were part of the original gang of eight back in 2013 that brokered the bipartisan immigration bill that year that passed and then was ignored by the house. And then i would watch republicans like john cornyn and tom cotton from texas and arkansas that are good gauges of where the g. O. P. s reaction could be. You got some other people around the table that arent normally involved, the moderate democrat from the border district in texas, a democrat whos met with the president at least twice already in other meetings. And steny hoyer and kevin mccarthy, the leaders from the house. What youre not going to see there are the big four congressional leaders for whatever reason. The white house didnt want to invite them and its partly designed to gauge the rank and files of reaction and potential parameters in this conversation. And so, if something comes of todays arrangement and perhaps he brings in the big four later again this week and say heres what i heard, why dont we do this . Lindsey graham said to me last night who will also be there said look, this issue will be pretty clearcut. Its going to be a need for Border Security and establish halfway to citizenship. Maybe we can work on the margins to figure things out. But he said this is the kind of issue that congress can take anywhere from 10 to 15 years to sort out. And at this point, were in about year 12 of the ongoing fight. This will be the third round of this that has been tried since the century began. And graham was saying i think were in a pretty good spot here because while all of this stuff gets out of the senate, the harder sell has been on the house. If you can get the president to where hes on board and he tells the house this is a good deal, pass it, then that might be the key. He said that was something that george w. Bush couldnt do, barack obama couldnt do but he thinks donald trump would do. Host not available are the Interest Groups that have played such a role, had loud voices in this debate. Do they think those ranking file members that you talked about, they can pressure those folks more than some of the big four leaders that you were referring to . Guest well, youre referring to people like the head of the spanish caucus who was asked by democrats to be there but was rejected by the white house and other maybe more strident conservatives. Well see. Michael bennett whos going to this meeting last night said to me yeah, this isnt the greatest arrangement because you dont usually caught deal with 30 people in the room but he said this will force certain people who have not necessarily been engaged in this to start paying attention. And thats not a bad thing, he said because hes been stunned by how few of his colleagues understand that every single day, up to 1,000 Daca Recipients are losing their status because theyre not renewing it and theyre immediately put at risk of deportation and losing their work privileges. He said this isnt a media issue that has to be resolved this month. And by spreading it around, that will help to help for congress to cut a deal. Host one other issue that i want to ask you is being included in this debate in this discussion today, the temporary protected status issue and the fate of the 200,000some salve donors at this point will see their protected status come to n end in the next two years. Guest thats right. And these are temporary protective status situations. You know, put the emphasis on temporary that the Trump Administration now has. Youve got 18 months if youre a salvadorian, get your citizenship or go back to el salvador. However, they made clear if congress feels differently, they can pass legislation to fix this. And that is the same situation with daca. So once again, the president is forcing the issue with congress, which has, for years, neglected to take up the issues and figure out ways to resolve them. And so well see. Its now once again, another immigration issue has been put in congresss lap and we will see whether or not they were able to resolve it. You have until september 19, basically if youre from el salvador to sort out your status or hope that congress somehow establishes a way for you to stay. But you know, after all these years of squabbling, to see the white house push this back to congress maybe isnt a bad thing because its going to force them to take up a difficult situation and try to resolve it. Host well see. Ed okeefe will be there to write about it in the pages of the Washington Post. Thank you. Host with this issue being a big part of this looming, bending debate, this deadline thats happening in 10 days, a Government Shutdown if congress doesnt dom a deal to fund the government passed january 19. Let us know what your immigration policies are. Democrat, 2027488000, republicans, 2027488001, independents, 2027488002. Tim is up first in alabama, line for democrats. Tim, good morning. Caller yes. I would like to comment about the wall that President Trump wants to have built. I did a Little Research on the wall and it started back in the and it was 50s about keeping cattle from crossing mexico into the United States because they said it was bringing in some type of virus or disease. So they made a fence. And that fence since that time had just grown and grown. Wilson at thatnt time, he said that the mexicans that were coming over were good workers and that the United States need good labor. So they allowed the mexicans to come over but they made a fence, originally, to keep out the cattle. Host tim, bring us to 2018. Caller yes. Much later on, president nixon had what he called a policy to keep out drugs. And since that policy, the fence has grown into keeping people out, keeping the mexican people from coming over here and that border wall, each president just kept adding and adding on to it. I think that you should just stop this idea with this wall. Just tear it down. Were the only country on the planet right now with a wall to keep out people. Germany tore down their wall when reagan became president and we should tear down this wall and stop this immigration that is actually a racial policy to keep mexicans out or to keep muslims out or anything else to make america socalled great again. Host tim, got your point. On the wall, a story in todays New York Times. The focus on the wall, questions of whether the money spent and the focus on the wall will take away from other security measures at the border. New york times story by ron nixon noting that under spending plan submitted last week, the wall would cost 18 million in 10 years and erected nearly 900 miles of the southern border but the president ignores the evolving nature of terrorism, immigration and drug trafficking. Host the white house asked officials at the Homeland Security department to reduce or delay request for technology and equipment. You want to read more on that in New York Times. Terry, line for democrats. Go ahead. Caller yes, my comment is it would like to see the lottery system go. Ould also like to see migration go. When my grarneds grand partners came here, they could not not allowed to grandparents brought my grandmother and his wife over. Nd he had to pay for them. I would like to see more benefits cut. Theyre come for the benefits. And im not a racist but im not a bigot. I just think that if you come here, you need to support yourself and if you bring people here, you need to support them. And not let the taxpayers pay for it. Thank you. Host if there was a deal put together that eliminated chain migration, that did away with the lottery system, but also include the pass of citizenship for those dreamers, those people who were brought here as children and have lived in the United States, would you be ok with that deal . Caller i would be fine wit as long as theres an understanding that if you are going to do that, then you have to pay for yourself in the future like every other american citizen. You have to keep working and paying for yourself and paying for your family. If you have a family. Host terry, thanks for the call this morning. A few tweets. Elliott where is me is build the wall. Were going to lose the country if we dont halt third world migration. And steve says stricter laws on business, hiring illegal immigrates but have worker programs for Legal Immigration workers. Eddie is with us from l. A. Line for independents. Eddie, go ahead. Caller yeah, good morning. This is a racist program. The reason why reagan implemented was to stop the black momentum in the 1970s and the 1980s. Host youre talking about the Immigration Program in general, eddie . Caller no, this problem that we having now with this immigration, came in with reagan to stop the momentum of the black population in the 1970s and the 80s. 1980s. And now, when we was in california and had the opportunities, it was the jones that we were joining. And when we was going to the south showing our family, it pissed those white people off. He went to philadelphia and mississippi to let them know he was going to put a hat to the black progress of what was happening to this country. Host bring us to 2018, eddie. Caller to 2018 . Still in pick with laws they want to enforce. Congress and senators dont have a thing to do with this. This should go to the people. It should go to the rebel and republic and let us vote on who they want. When the illegals come in, they dont go to the neighborhoods to live in, they go to work. Host if there was a referendum on immigration policy what, would it be . What would the referendum be on . Building the wall . On chain migration . What would you want to see that referendum on . Caller put everybody they hired in jail. Period. Youre breaking the law. How are you going to enforce the law with me and youre breaking the laws . How are you going to put me in jail by trying to feed myself and yaw bring in millions and millions of illegal workers who youre subsidizing. Theyre illiterate. Host charles in indiana, line for republicans. Go ahead. Caller yes. We have too many illegals coming in now. So thats the reason we need the wall. And my parents came from germany but back thens the u. S. Is not overpopulated and i just have one my comment about the taxes. Why cant we have a flat tax which is fair to everyone . Host time is running out on the spend egg bill on this looming january 19. In the past five years, congress has passed 15 shortterm spending bills and thats why were at the january 19 deadline from the latest shortterm spending bill that was passed at the end of december and each one sending a fund emergency, one after the other, talking about the history of that. Were going to talking with six different members of the house and Senate Budget committees in our 8 00 and 9 00 hours this morning on the washington journal to talk about this latest budget deadline their prioritys and their thoughts on the budgeting process that we re that congress is in. And what to do with the wall funding and the immigration system in this country playing a big role in this spending discussion and a meeting happening today at the white house to talk about immigration. So we want to talk about your immigration policy priorities. Democrats, 2027488000, republicans, 2027488001, ndependents, 2027488002. Robert in baltimore, line for democrats. Good morning. Caller you know, they shouldnt even build that wall because the people are already here. Theyve been here for years. They should just own a patriotism if they build a wall, build it. Patriot, the people who are here and let nobody else in. Because see, if they build the wall and try to get everybody out, where is that going to leave the agriculture people and the farmers and whatnot . I mean, who is going to pick fruit and vegetables for what they pay . My mother used to pick grapes and that was the only job they had for black folks and mexicans and they didnt say anything back then. And its just a big waste of time and money. If anything, they should just a north American Union where they just merge with canada and all the countries on this continent and maybe the economy will work itself out. But building the wall, that aint going to do nothing. They arent doing with the wall they already got. Ost raw supporter of nafta . Know, lets say, you coco crisp, people in china like coco crisp, cocacola, right . And let them produce cocacola and then the people who like chinese product, the chinese products can be manufactured here for people who like chinese roducts. If there were something that americans like that was a chinese brand or, you know, a brand of any country, then they could be manufactured here. But people who want to consume it and, you know, people come in this country that are living here. Host got your point, robert. Yaya is waiting in chicago, republican. Yaya, what are your immigration immigration y policy priorities . Caller well, theres no need for any one congress to talk about funding for a wall. I mean, trump clearly said mexico will pay for it. So i dont understand why congress will allow any American Funding into it. As far as daca, i mean, it was an executive order. It was a program. If trump wants to let it expire, he has the right. If the republicans who want to let it expire, they have the right to let that happen. But, you know, republicans are, you know, theyve got arizona and nevada coming up. Senate seats coming up in the states and in all honesty, i highly doubt mitch would let daca expire and put those states in risk. Host thats yaya in chicago this morning. This headline from todays Washington Times focusing on the president s speech last night to farmers. The headline trump tells farmers democrats want to raise their taxes. Highlights the impacts for historic cuts. It was the president s visit to the Farm Bureau Convention. The first sitting president to visit the Farm Bureau Convention since 1992. D weve been talking about immigration policy priorities and the president taking time to talk about that speech. Heres what he had say yesterday. President trump we are confronting the scorch of drug addiction and overdoses that Police Station plagues far too many of our Rural Communities and plagues too Many American lives all over our country. We are fighting the Opioid Epidemic and we are proudly supporting the men and women of Law Enforcement, including our wonderful i. C. E. Officers and border agencies. These are incredible people who endorsed me during the campaign and they are incredible. Theyre doing a great job at the border, by the way. [applause] President Trump we are going to end chain migration. We are going to end the lottery system. And we are going to build the wall. [applause] President Trump every american child deserves to grow up in a Safe Community and to live a life full of dignity, purpose and hope. That is the future we all seek. And we will fiercely defend for all americans. Host that was President Trump yesterday talking about his immigration policy priorities. What are yours . Give us a call this morning. Let us know. Were talking about it in the first hour of the washington journal. Democrats, 2027488000. Republicans, 2027488001, independents, 2027488002. Well also look for your comments on social media as well , including one from m. Stone this morning on twitter. Said mark stones priorities are to end chain migration and the lottery if a deal is made on aca. Tony from connecticut. Line for independents. Go ahead. Caller i thought they had a deal already with mr. Trump last time they sat down and they had an extension on the budget and it didnt work out. So i say dont make a deal with him and dont give him no funding for the wall. Because he said mexico was going to pay for the wall some let mexico pa
