Face domestic [use on a daily basis and president said for the remainder of the population. I want you to ask yourselves, is is one that you went your constituents want. I urge you all to sportss motion to support the rights of the vulnerable to discrimination. More education, more awareness. There is a lack of civility. A lack of basic care. Persecution is ongoing. Do we as members of a Large Community want to make a difference . Do we want to be remembered as a generation of perpetual hate and ignorance or of progression. Visibility is key to our success. [applause] kate, thank you for that. Withbefore we proceed speeches from the floor, i should say i will from time to parliamentary colleagues of mine. They are here in order to support you. It is a great pleasure for me to be able to be sitting in front of the sergeant of arms chair. Just raise your hand. The new labour member of parliament. Very importantly, himself i believe a former member of the Youth Parliament. He made it from the Youth Parliament to the house of commons as a constituency member. He has not forgotten where he came from. [cheers and applause] please give an equally warm and supportive welcome to the opposer of the motion from yorkshire, i call laura ferguson. [applause] thank you mr. Speaker. Future, a future where people can live sidebyside free of oppression and stigmatization. I want you to imagine a future where our friends and relatives good introduce their partners and whatever it was would be ok and accepted. Need to comes no out. Required tonot be any more than four straight kids. The notion of coming out perpetuates the notion of any quality in our society. Itates a promise creates a premise of the difference. Forces inition and and forces us to remain in a place forever more but that is diffusing the lgbt writes. Relativesmy gay finally could hold hands with his partner in the street without being prosecuted. They can adopt a child. Finally form could into marriage. [indiscernible] we are wondering when the misery and torment will and. The horrific levels of disparity cannot be allowed to continue. We need to ask for so much more. This my friends is not an issue we need change. Social change. Our time is not best spent commandeering campaigns across the country. Other organizations are better equipped and better funded then we could be. We need to be paving ways for procedures, we can be the change we need to see. Of humanity. Er a matter of what is right and what is wrong. Now, i want you all to imagine the future, blissful, safe, excepting. Thank you. ] [cheers and applause] laura, and thank you for a highly articulate and the equally passionately delivered , the approval of which i think will have been given to you by your fellow members of the Youth Parliament. I want to reference another not for the first time is here in support of the u. K. Youth parliament and i am referring to the gentleman in the other gallery at the back. Do not be shy. You never been. Direction ofn the steven, dont be shy. , who sadlyather 2014, wasy in early one of the outstanding parliamentarians of the 20th century. Andelieved passionately parliamentary is some and debate and presentation and speaking from the heart as well as from the head and it is a characteristic of all members of their family. I remember just before tony died , i will come to him into the speakers house at a reception and he said to me that he had what was almost going to be his last book and i said where you going to publish it and he said, and has not been decided yet and i said i think you should launch it from the house. And he did. And the book, if i remember 32ectly, was 32 lectures lectures to my grandchildren. And he said, the purpose is to encourage the ongoing. He did that to encourage the young. And he did that. Familyembers of his have, and two. Stephen, thank you for joining us. [applause] i will try to call as many colleagues as i can in this debate. Topossible, i am looking call from someone from the southwest of england. Anyone wished to speak . The first person i saw was the gentleman at the back nearest with a blue tie. Yes you, sir. Say who you are and tell us what you think. Thank you very much mr. Speaker. I represent southwest of the city. I will stand and disagree and projecting with the motion we should make it a campaign. It should not be a Campaign Pledge to protect a minority community. You should not have to say lets protect this minority just to get more publicity on simplicity and support from of right of people. We should make it our duty and it should be everything we stand for as people who represent young people. We are fighting their fight. We are more representative than the government. I call on this chamber not Just Community as lgb t a campaign but to make it our duty and the duty of our peers and our family and everyone in this country to protect those that lack. Thank you mr. Speaker. Thank you. [applause] i think this becomes more impressive every year. Is there somebody on the other side of the argument who wishes to speak . The young to call person there, yes. You can start. Please. Jacob from the northwest as you pointed out. I would like to just say i believe that although weve come a long way in the past 50 years since living as a gay man was decriminalized, we have a long way to go. I could toss statistics at you all day. I can talk about bullying people face. I did talk about all the people who commit or attempt to commit suicide. I could go on and talk about personal experience. Gay friends of mine who had been physically attacked. I myself as a bisexual man have n it undermines yourself confidence. It undermines your sense of who you are. This chamber for as much support as there is so much that needs to be done. So many young people. [applause] thank you said and for what you your personal testimony. That is what this places about. You are setting a fantastic example. I am looking for a female speaker. Have we got somebody from scotland wants to take heart in this debate . Is there a young woman from scotland . None of us are going to stand wrongoday and say it is to do this, but it is clear we already supported. That is already being done. We dont need to do what has done. Y been stronger believe, more resources, more financial support. We can put our resources into something that can really be changed. We can show our support and let people who already do this get on with it. Thank you. Thank you [applause] what about somebody from london. Would we have from london . Yes, the young woman here. I would like to thank you for the opportunity to speak. Parliament has been known for upholding lgbtq writes. We became one of the first organizations and the u. K. To sanction samesex marriage. We have to congratulate ourselves. It is simply not enough, the struggle that lgbt young people have. It is an issue we have every single day. Work. Lic transport and at there can be no doubt well see Youth Parliament need to lead the campaign on this issue. Those in this chamber represented generation of as such, we have a responsibility to take a stand against algae bt discrimination in a way past generations could not. Parliament prior to self on diversity. Past campaigns have been a clear we do not tolerate discrimination on the grounds of race and religion. It is [applause] thank you. What about the the West Midlands, who have we got from the West Midlands. The young man that is waving. Yes, indeed. To me. Arer thank you, mr speaker. So here we are, members of yee you parliament for the u. K. We have a job to protect young people in our country, i want to agree with the right honourable gentleman from london. We have had a lot of strive towards protecting l. G. B. T. Communities. What if a lot of money has been put into it. So what if a lot of work was put into it. We still have work to do. We have work to protect the young people in our society. We have work to ensure the rights of young people in our community is protected. We have two choices. We have the option to gain a new right. Vote at 16 or an option to protect our current right. I would rather give up my right to vote at 16 to ensure a young person can live without discrimination. Thank you. [applause] thank you. Thank you very much for that excellent speech. I am sure our friend from the West Midlands has a name. Jake keeper. The member of Youth Parliament for dudley. Excellent. Do we have a would be speaker ireland. Hern i learned nothing of Sexual Identity at school. I learned nothing of the struggle they face. Struggle lgbt people face. Education is the only way to make a real change. Many of you know that Northern Ireland was thrust under a magnifying glass after the last snap election. Lot of peoplee a in Northern Ireland growing up with mindsets stuck in the past an will only move on when entire generation is learning from partial sources rather than embittered relatives. That is why we need curriculum for life in the u. K. So we can allow everyone to learn on an equal level regardless of circumstance. Members of the u. K. Used our limit. U. K. Youth parliament. From the east of england. We would like to hear you. I am here to say this is a possible campaign because we have done something similar in south bend. My colleagues have been working to set up a of the bt y lgbt youth forum in our area. We are linking of all of the tot societies together create a constituency so no one feels the left behind. If we can do it in my constituency, then everything thats every community can. Can. En every community notant every lgbt person to feel alone. We can do it because in south bend we are presently doing it. Thank you. Thank you very much. Do we have a speaker from wales . What wants to speak from whales. Thats who wants to speak from wales . Lgbt, transsexual and transgender people need to be treated the same as everyone else. Discrimination needs to be challenged. I strongly believe that l. G. B. T. Young people should not be excluded or rejected. Studies and quorums, psychologists say that there are high rates of depressing, generalized anxiety disorder and high rates of Substance Abuse among lgbt youth. Moreyouth are 4 times likely to commit suicide or experience suicidal thoughts. In order to make sure it is minimize we should ensure that , minority stress is tackled. Its a type of stress suffered from minorities. I urge you so much that you support this motion for fair and equal saturday. Society. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you very much indeed. What about the northeast, the northeast of england, anybody from the northeast of england. Yes, the young woman. I am from the northeast of england. I think half of l. G. B. T. Our believe nationally every year. Even though it is one year and differencely make a in what people think in the past , we show we can make a difference, we have done it before and will do it again. And i think we should. [applause] thank you. What about the southeast of england . Who have we got from the southeast of england . The first person i saw was the young woman here with the white top. Thank you. Im from the southeast. As much as i believe that nobody should be discriminated against based on age, gender, social background, ethnicity or sexual orientation, i believe other groups in society are discriminated against. Disabled people. People with Mental Health issues. Black minority groups. These are from a few people discriminated against from society on a daily basis. As young people we share common experience. That is discrimination, not one of you can tell me you dont know what is feels like, not many people are. If adult m. P. S are stand alone. Decision makers. We can be Decision Makers too. Imagine what we can feel like. You cannot achieve your full potential because of colour of your skin. Yous color of your best cannot achieve your full achievel you cannot your full potential because of the color of your skin. And you shouldnt be discriminated against based on your age, your sexual orientation. However, we shaw empower, we we should empower society. We have put culture into the curriculum to teach people about the different cultures that they think about. Everyone should be encountered that accounted for when it comes to discrimination and not one singled out. Thank you. Accounted for when it comes to discrimination and not one singled out. Thank you. [applause] thank you for that heartfelt and powerful speech which is warmly appreciated by members of the u. K. Youth parliament. I am now looking, i think, for a contributor from the east midlands. I will take the woman in the burgundy dress. Thank you. The florence and i am representative for nottingham ship. A myp who could not be here today. I have had my whole perception changed about what gender is. We need to try to get people to meet new people of different genders and sexualities. When you meet them, you can have this conversations about what is gender and how can sexuality be different. Your whole mind changes. And opens up. Organizations of and if we work with them, we can make even better change. Motionve that the lgbt is something we can make more of an actual change and look back and say we actually did Work Together and make an amazing team of the work we put in. I urge all of you to think about whether or not the work we will put in could make a difference. I think it can. [applause] thank you for another clear and incisive speech. We have not had a back bench contributor because i have not called such. We havent had a back bench from yorkshire and bahumba. Its a toss up. It was very close. Ill take you if i may. Im liberty and i am from leeds. Everyone deserves to be happy. Age, appearance, race, doesnt matter. Why should it be different with sexuality. It shouldnt. As young people representing our constituents its our , responsibility to make sure no one is disrupt nated against. , discriminated against. We can do so much if this is our campaign. Speak to groups, create awareness and change peoples perspective. No one deserves to be alone. We need change. And as Nelson Mandela said, be the change you want to see in the world. Today im asking you, members of Youth Parliament to be that , change. I urge you to vote for this campaign. Thank you. Thank you, colleagues. Theres always more wanting to speak than time to accommodate. If you werent called, keep trying in other debates. If i can call you, i will. That is always the intention to call as many as possible. To conclude the debate i want , you to give a warm welcome to our speaker from the west. Idlands, amias perry [applause] thank you, mr. Speaker. I would like to start by dedicating this speech to all those that suffered and lost ofir lives as a result hobiahobia and transp throughout history. 18yearolds0 voted to protect l. G. B. T. People. That was in this years make your mark vote. Many are members to the l. G. B. T. Themselves, and likely though have experienced the horrific feeling that comes from continuous targeted hate. As have i. Many will know how infective and downright unhelpful many generic onesize fits all campaigns can be. Perhaps this is best left by local authorities and schools. Stone wall School Report for 2017 states that one in 5 lgbt people do not feel safe in their schools. Regularly skipping schools. Skipping after fear of being attacked or abused. How horrible is that. Young people afraid to leave their own homes for being themselves. This means the l discrimination is depriving people of valuable data that means of this that means this lgbt discrimination and taking away opportunities and harming their future prospects. I say to schools take action. Protect all your pupils. Schools should be a safe area. Every person across this United Kingdom has the right to feel safe, comfortable and accepted. Whoever they are, whoever they love and no matter where they live in the u. K. From city ton, town to village. They have that right. [applause] however, as previously stated, there are multiple organizations better equipped ed tounded and position deliver this sort of campaign. I attended a residential event run by stone wall. And that environment of acceptance, freedom to be yourself without fear is an environment id like everywhere. Especially our schools. I implore you. Listen carefully to each and every point made today. Make your decision. Vote your conscience. Represent your constituents. If we want something to happen, we cannot just wait. We must act. For in the words of william shakespeare, it is not in the stars to hold our destiny, but in ourselves. We are often told as young people that we cannot make a difference. Leave it to the adults. Members of the parliament or any young person watching the debate, if there is Something Like lgbt writes you are passionate about do not be , scared to fight for what you believe in or be afraid of making your voice heard. Stand up and be counted. Thank you. [applause] thank you for that inspiring speech. A speech of real quality and distinction. Which i hope youll treasure and remember for a very long time to come. That was, if i may say so, a superb opening debate. I hope that its opened your eyes to your own quality. What you can deliver. And encourages all those who follow to emulate the very, very High Standard which has got us underway. We are about to move onto the second motion, i want to mention, he left the chamber. Joined bygo we were the clerk assistant in the house. Who is the second most senior clerk in the house. A procedural expert in parliamentary privilege who sits at the table and advises the speaker, me, the deputy peakers. The deputy speakers and members of the government and opposition. Dr. John benger. Hes a
