NICEVILLE — Karolyn Berardi was adorning her grandparents’ gravesite with poinsettias recently at Heritage Gardens Cemetery in Niceville when she stumbled upon an unexpected holiday treasure, one beloved by many children. “I always look right behind the tombstone to see if anything’s fallen back there that I need to pick up,” said Berardi, who lives in Crestview. “I looked around behind the tombstone and there laying in the dirt, face up, just looking at me like, ‘Hello there’ was an Elf on the Shelf. It was like, ‘Oh my goodness, what are you doing here? This is not a shelf you’re supposed to be behind.’
