Some Milwaukee-area school districts say that even if the statewide mask mandate is repealed, masks will be required in schools. Amidzich said the policy won't change this school year."We have quite a few safety protocols in place which include wearing a mask in the buildings, and that requirement was supported by 70% of our families," Amidzich said.Masks will continue for high school sports, too. The WIAA is reasserting its policy "requiring appropriately worn masks by participants and spectators.""We are confident it is critical to keeping our students in school face to face," Menomonee Falls School District Superintendent Corey Golla said. Golla said staff members were already growing concerned about the efforts in Madison to lift the mask mandate."I sent a message out this morning that this does not impact our policy, and it will not impact our practices and that was met with a lot of relief," Golla said. "Having the governor's mask mandate has kept some of the political battle out of our schools," Kettle Moraine School District Superintendent Patricia Deklotz said.Deklotz said while the legislature ponders a repeal, it won't change school policy."I met with my own medical advisors this morning. They strongly urge that to keep schools open we need to have masks on," Deklotz said. One superintendent said that until there is widespread vaccination, and virtually no community spread, people can expect school mask policies to remain in place.
