FEMA will end its COVID-19 vaccine distribution at the Wisconsin Center next month.Continuing Coverage: Coronavirus in WisconsinThe announcement was made Thursday morning. The last day for vaccines at the Wisconsin Center will be May 28.The Milwaukee Health Department will continue vaccine distribution at the Northwest and Southside Health Centers. The city hopes to continue with mobile vaccination sites to bring the vaccine into the community. There were also plans for drive-thru vaccine distribution.City officials have not yet said where that will be."If the demand is there, we will make sure we have the ability to have vaccinations but I think everyone understands if people aren't coming, those resources should go somewhere else," Mayor Tom Barrett said.FEMA has the capacity to administer as many as 4,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses per day.Officials said about 2,000 doses have been administered each day, on average.FEMA said it would administer doses at the Wisconsin Center for eight weeks when it took over operations earlier this month.Milwaukee Health Commissioner Kirsten Johnson said closing the mass vaccination clinic was about a decline in demand."It doesn't make sense for us to have a large site for a mass vaccination center that has the capacity for 4,000 and, like I said, at one point we were doing 3,000 doses a day," she said. "We wanted to give enough warning and time that the Wisconsin Center would be closing, but I'm confident if someone in the city wants a vaccine, they can get it."Anyone age 16 and older is eligible to receive a vaccine dose at the Wisconsin Center. The city began administering vaccines to essential workers at the Wisconsin Center in January. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services announced it will begin using VaccineFinder to help people more easily locate available vaccine providers that are open to the public. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention launched the VaccineFinder tool in March to help people find COVID-19 vaccine in their area. Next month, the tool will replace the DHS map of COVID-19 vaccine providers that launched in February."DHS is constantly evaluating different tools to make it easier to find available vaccine," DHS Secretary-designee Karen Timberlake said. "It is critical that we streamline this process so anyone wanting a vaccination can quickly locate available vaccine in their community and get vaccinated."A little more than 4 million vaccine doses have been administered so far in Wisconsin as of Thursday.Nearly 30% of residents have received two doses.Waukesha County said it would close its mass vaccination clinic once 60% of its residents have received the vaccine.
