County applies for nearly $5M grant to help fund new jail Current estimate to build a new facility is $47 million View Comments ZANESVILLE - The county has applied for $4.7 million of an Ohio local jails grant to help pay for a new jail. The deadline was Wednesday. It comes four years after a jail levy on the 2017 ballot failed. "We've needed a jail for a long time," Sheriff Matt Lutz said. "Just because (the levy) was defeated, it didn't take away the need for a new jail." A current estimate to build a new facility would cost around $47 million although it could be more, Commissioner Mollie Crook said. They requested 10% of that amount, offering other ways to match the remaining 90% from other funding sources.
