Congress’ COVID-19 relief package falls short, advocates say, but staves off disaster for millions of renters Orlando Sentinel 12/22/2020 Caroline Glenn, Orlando Sentinel The $900 million relief package approved by Congress late Monday will save renters who without it faced losing their homes, but it isn’t enough, housing advocates say. Along with aid for the distribution of vaccines, the long-sought package provides Americans with a one-time $600 stimulus check, half of what they received earlier in the pandemic; $300 weekly federal unemployment, also half of the previous deal; and extends the national eviction moratorium until Jan. 31. Florida, where more than 30,000 evictions have been filed since April, will receive about $1.4 billion in rental assistance, to replenish city and county programs that have been drained since the last round of funding was approved in March.
