Welcome everyone. Im Michael Holmes. Appreciate your company coming up here on Cnn Newsroom, israels Widening War Airstrikes it. Lebanons capital as israeli attacks killed hundreds and displaced thousands across the country dozens dead over 1,000 missing many more without power food, or water. The u. S. Southeast is left reeling from the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene two years ago today, Vladimir Putin signed the Accession Treaties formalizing its illegal next question of ukrainian land. A look at Russias Campaign in Eastern Ukraine as the war shows, no signs of slowing atlanta Cnn Newsroom with Michael Holmes the Israeli Military has conducted Air Airstrikes in the city of beirut. The first inside the Capital City limits since the start of Israels War with hezbollah showing the damage from an attack me, beiruts cola bridge, a major intersection. Cnn has reached out to the Israeli Military for comment. This following an intense barrage of strikes in lebanon that began about a week ago lebanons Health Ministry says the attacks on sunday alone killed more than 100 people and wounded more than 300 jordan, 50 others. The toll from the start of the campaign over 1,000. Meanwhile, israel confirms it also carried out airstrikes more than 2000 kilometers away in yemen on sunday. This video showing the aftermath of a strike on a Power Station houthi Run Television saying at least four people were killed the old and 45 others wounded Israels Defense Minister saying the strikes in yemen show that for israel, quote, no place is too far cnns Paula Hancocks live in Abu Dhabi for us with more on all of this a polar israeli attacks now inside the beirut City Limits bring us up to date on whats been happening well, michael, its certainly feels like a stepup in the capabilities and what israel is trying to achieve at this point over recent days, we have seen strikes in the southern suburbs of beirut. And this is a hezbollah stronghold. Weve seen a number of hezbollah commanders being taught ill get it including of course, hassan nasrallah, the head of hezbollah. But this is within the City Limits. So this is something different that were seeing now its near, as you say, near the cola intersection, a very busy main intersection within the city itself. And from the images that we can see, there was one the apartment appearing to be targeted. We saw firefighters fighting a blaze within that apartment in the early hours of monday morning. And you can see Debris And Chaos on the streets themselves. Now we have heard from a palestinian group, the pflp, the palestine front of for the popular the front for the palace, the liberation of palestine they say that three of their members were killed when an apartment in this area was targeted. So what were seeing now, of course, is a concern in beirut that the reach of israel is, is reaching further to the Senate Control areas and bear in mind, you have Hundreds Of Thousands of displaced civilians that are in these areas as well according to relief international, one of the humanitarian aid groups they say about 1 Million people are displaced at this point we saw a Mass Exodus from Southern Lebanon, where much of the activity has been taking place. Many of these israeli Air Strikes have been targeting coming up to the capitol in the hope that that would be a safer area. Michael all right. Paula hancocks live in Abu Dhabi. Appreciate it. Thanks, Paula Director of the Military And SecurityStudies Program at the washington institute. He joins me now from washington and thanks for doing so. How how does those Rallies Death along with the other hits on his balah there . Crippling of hamas in gaza, the assassination of a Hamas LeaderIsmail Haniyeh in tehran. How does all of this week in irans reach or influence regionally is humiliating for them this is a disaster for tehran. Their preferred way of war is to operate through proxies and his bullet was always the diamond in their crown. And it played a major role both in their struggle against israel and their efforts to create what they call the axis of resistance in the region the his below was a key Facilitator Trainer and exemplar for all these other organizations. And the fact that his bullet now is on the ropes. Theyve suffered grievous grievous losses in the current war against israel this will, this is a setback that may take many years, if not et, decades to recover from Ayatollah Khomeini says that azrallah is blood will not go and avenged. He didnt mention importantly, i think iran doing the avenging, how will around next moves, how will it be weighing its next moves . And alons would look if they do nothing yeah, its going to be very difficult for them to do nothing. On the other hand, look you can go through a whole list of an times in which in the past Theyve Abandoned Allies to their fate in 1991 after the gulf war, when the shiites interacted rose up, they didnt intervene in afghanistan in 1997 when the hazara, is were massacred by the taliban, they didnt do anything except to help some proxies there i mean, lebanon in 2006, they didnt intervene in likewise in bahrain in 2011 when there was an uprising that was put down of largely shiite that was put down by the government from it. There. They didnt intervene in the past. Theyve, theyve left shiite communities to their fate this, this will be very difficult to them for them though, to step back from. And we did see an april. They did respond to the killing of two of their generals in damascus with a large missile and drone strike. Its possible to try it again, but look, the americans, now were having a second carrier coming to the region. And theyre during a very vulnerable place that their main proxies for prosecuting a conflict with israel or the united states are on the road. I think theyll probably be very careful going forward. Right. You mentioned the u. S. And where we are they in all of this in terms of influence . The americans have called for and proposed ceasefires. Theyve called for Restraint Deescalation either netanyahu effectively ignores the u. S or perhaps could the u. S. Be saying one thing publicly, but under the table, be getting the nod to israel to continue i suspect the administration is divided on this issue, but i think the president on the one hand, he sends signals that he would like to deescalate. And this is a constant theme in this administration. On the other hand, they are providing the arms that are necessary for israel in order to achieve its own goals, which also serve american interests so i also keep in mind this is the electionseason. And the Democratic Party is divided on this issue. So the president has to take a Public Posture of advising coercion and trying to achieve ceasefires. Although let me just mentioned, it takes to have a ceasefire i mean theres no indication that theres a willingness. On the other side to do so at this point, the israelis have what they consider to be a once, perhaps in a lifetime opportunity to land Death Blows to his villa to do, to do something they wanted to do for years. In fact, i think that a couple of minutes left, but i wanted to ask you about the jordanian foreign yes, i had strong words at the un after israel said it was surrounded by enemies, he said aerobe nations guaranteed Israels Security in exchange for a Twostate Solution for palestinians. But israel is the one killing the chances of peace and that they had no plan, no, that was his word. What do you think israel . Those Netanyahus Plan is long term well, i think his main focus is on dealing with iran, which has a nuclear program that is making progress, right now. Hes dealing with Iran Army of proxies and very effectively, i should mention, let me just say also, with regard to the jordanians their security and their survival is bound up in your Security And Survival of israel. No matter what the jordanian Foreign Ministry says, publicly and the iranians have been trying to undermine and subvert jordan and use it as a base of operations in the west bank. And the israelis in the jordanians operate very, very well and very closely under the table quietly on this issue. And so theres a Public Posture, but theres also the reality on the ground. Yeah, exactly. Fascinating. Great to speak with you, michael eizenstat. Thank you thank you. Benjamin netanyahu, adding a former rival, do his cabinet. Gideon saar, will become a minister without appointment. Analysts say netanyahu is bringing on the veteran rightwing politician to shore up his base and to protect his government from Ultra Orthodox opposition before israels escalation lebanon, netanyahu had intended to replace Defense MinisterYoav Galant and Gibbs Saw that position signed says that he would have been qualified for it despite his lack of national Security Experience but now says he will not take the post. Netanyahu explained why he chose to appoint a former adverse three so it will also show you but now its no secret that there were differences between us in the past. But since october 7, we both put behind us all that has happened. Thats what happened when Gideon Saar joined the government in october. And thats how it is going to be when good ian is returning to the government and the Security Cabinet today, we will work together shoulder to shoulder, and i intend to use his help in the forums that influenced the conduct of the war us president Joe Biden plans to visit communities devastated by Hurricane Helene this week at least 95 people are dead after high winds, torrential Rain And Flash flooding ripped through the southeastern us. Even more are missing or unaccounted forward largely due to breakdowns in communication john, groups like the Florida National Guard are working quickly to rescue residents and animals alike and obeyed more than 300 rescues so far. The most pressing concern for residents in cities like asheville, North Carolina is defined dwindling supplies catastrophic flooding is still a major issue there with much of the city completely swarmed. One Community Director became emotional telling cnn about the toll the storm has taken them this is the most devastating thing ive ever seen her whole city think the loss of lives dog, but if you dont have cash, you cant get anything. Weve gone to stores, waters out, isis out people slept overnight at Gas Stations like i feel like weve never seen this before and i know that we dont really, truly know the numbers of the loss of life here. Its been devastating Cnns Rafael Romo is in North Carolina with more on the destruction wrought by Helene Buncombe County officials announced the Sad News On Sunday saying that at least 30 people have died in this county alone, which means that the figure at the State Level is now 36 and a fifth officials say that in the southeast states that were hit by the hurricane and the subsequent storm are now more than 90. And what we have seen in asheville here where we are is a many streets like this one behind me covered in mud. Theres debris everywhere and people trying to cope because its been very difficult for officials to deliver the aid that is badly needed by people. Governor Roy Cooper from North Carolina said that theyre trying to get to those communities not only here, but communities in the mountains around here some of them are inaccessible because the roads are impassable. And one alternative, and this is what the governor is, says that theyve been doing is air lifting water, and food and basic necessities to those people. And so they have developed a system by which they bring all the supplies here and from here, they distribute those things. Hanks now, we have been talking to people here that tell us that for the time being there. Okay. But as time goes on, is going to be more and more difficult to find food. There are many Gas Stations, theres one right next to where we are that are not operational. There are others that are running of fuel. And many people desperate going to different places at tried to get the feel and the reality is that these people, its going to take a while to get running water officials say that theyre trying their best to bring the Water System back up and running, but they were trying to fix water main breaks before they can stabilize the pressure. The Water Pressure in the system, and then the third step would be to actually turn the system back on. Also, power remains a problem for most of the population and we have learned that at least two Cell Phone carriers are bringing Satellite Trucks that are were going to provide relief because people are enabled to communicate with Loved Ones who live in other parts of the country and other states to let them know that theyre okay. Just to give you an idea the governor said that more than 1,000 reports of missing people thats what authorities have received in the last few days. Blown rafael romo, cnn, asheville, North Carolina while some North Carolina residents have complained about the local government response, the states governor, Roy Cooper told cnns kaitlan collins, and concern is helping those in need our number one priority right now is getting people out and getting supplies in. There are Search And Rescue teams from 19 states from the federal government, from our national guard from our state and local teams who are out there rescuing and people as we speak. The biggest problem is getting to them because more than 200 at roads are closed many counties and areas where people are landlocked Cell Phones, and Internet Service is down so we know there are a lot of families and friends that are worried about people and there have been about 1,000 requests for that doubt to 11 to report. If you are looking for someone but weve been pushing the Cell Phone companies and theyve been working very hard. Weve been finding ways to help them get in to get Cell Phone service backup. That is beginning to make progress in coming back. The more of a Cell Phones come back, the more we will know where people are and what the situation is. The same with power in the meantime, Food And Water is critical because people are cut off and its very difficult if not impossible, to get trucks into some of these places. So were having to do it by air. There is a massive effort underway to coordinate and make sure were getting supplies and water to people because light its a Life And Death situation here the governor acknowledged the Death Toll could rise further with Rescue Operations still ongoing from the us president ial election and democratic president ial nominee Kamala Ha
