Administration including my press prep, predecessor, failed to buy american Ship Jobs overseas where labor is cheaper brought home the product. There was more expensive, but not anymore. Federal projects build american roads, bridges highways, and itd be made with american products by american workers last longer sharing its simple thats why were paying so many good paying jobs in fact, requiring those kinds of projects to pay Davis Baker prevailing wages. So their job that could raise a family on those jobs dont require a College Degree in fact, We Expanded registered apprenticeships. Remember all the hell i got for doing that. We got for doing that well, Guess What, resulted in hiring over 1 Million apprentices sensory came to Office Lots of folks getting an apprenticeship is like getting on a College Degree why you have to train for four or five years to get that. And some of the best workers in the world arrive that we write where we are, we are you know wondering if pittsburgh youre standing was still workers. Lets be clear. I believe in American Steel companies, american owned and operated still company the simple reason why american swimmers the best still workers in the world and ive made it clear last time was in pittsburgh, united states steel. An iconic american company for more than a century its going to remain in american companies remember young senator, why than that national labor Relations Board or sometimes so antilabor was set up to help labor to be pro labor well, Guess What, thats why, when most significant things weve done. Common lie is appointed, national labor is board Relations Board that actually believes in unions and believes in recognize remember you have short memories. Im all for forgiveness, some not for this Trump Appointed Union Busters on that board what, is real is affects peoples lives were going to let that Son Of A Gun do that again folks may lot of Progress Kamala going to build on that progress and shes going to build on it. Ill be on the sidelines, but ill do everything i can to help im not joking when i say not a joke. When i said its not run in 2020, people didnt believe me you did, but shes not didnt believe me its all at risk because of Donald Trump literally the stroke of the pending get rid of a lot of this and do you think this guy gives a damn about your pensions im serious. Do you think he loses even in an instant asleep over it to think he cares about all the work you do every day anD How hard it is to be chairs about good paying jobs for hard work and people are built this Economy Hell he regards Picket Lines. Hed rather cross one and walk one when i have no problem walking the picket line welcome. Sight alongside you Union Workers built this country. Again, thats not hyperbole, thats a fact. These are fees are facts. Theres not campaign slogans let me close this five years ago, i began my campaign for president right here in pittsburgh i said one of the reasons i was running was to rebuild the Backbone And Spine of America Middleclass and Working Class folks, not a job. Think about it. Think about it five years later, weve done just that our back in pittsburgh get with a simple message as youre looking Citizen Election i spelled my whole career. Well, maybe didnt unions im not joking when i say that im honored to be considered the most prounion president ever remember all the Talk Biden got elected. Hes going to do a plan to economy. Were going to collapse and its going to be that all those caving in Interest Rates are going we go through the ceiling come on, man here to tell you if its a body increasing the strength of your unions was all about if you care about hard work of people just give him a fair shot. Everyone in america deserves a fair shot. No get a fair shot. His care about the dignity of Work Care about the dignity of work. And i mean the matter i remember when my great grandfather was one of the only the Second Catholic elected statewide to the State Senate here in pennsylvania i remember they talked about when he when theyre running against him in 1906, they said, Guess What . They said, hes a molly maguire, you know what Amalek Wire was . Well, those of you dont omali regard back in the old days, when we are catholic came and then the polls and others that were catholic when they came to the united states american beginning of the 1840s i, late 1840s, they made their way down in the pennsylvania and a lot of them. Theres a tear in the Coal Mines. Those guys who got there last ended up being the last people in the Coal Mines but a lot of english own new Coal Mines. And what they did was theyd really beat the hell out of the mostly catholic population was in the minds, not, not a joke, not a joke. But there is a group that called the myelin mcguires and the marlin mcguires, if they find out the former new was taken advantage of an individual and they literally kill him now, joe, can they bring that body up and put them on the doorstep of his Family Kind of crude but i got to admit they accuse my great grandfather being a model where he wasnt. But were so damn disappointed joe thank you, joe. Its about the dignity of work its about how youre treated and when i met with the ibew and i started off this last campaign, first i said theres two things and asking me and i have said two things. Im asking the view. One, you got to open up your units to more women more, menard, you have done both that Guess What that ad in support of 30 american leaders now where 65 in america support the american Union Movement really is all about can we live work and theres all if you care about the dignity of mergers, only one person you have a rational choice with this time thats Kamala Harris i know i trust her not a joke. I trust her number two a first decision i made, the Nominees Nominee in 2020 was selecteD Here as my Vice President it was a single best decision i made as present united states of America Watson Substance sent to me when i asked barack the said brock pick me as Vice President because knew i can be president. I know shell be a good ive watched the role the experts, foreign and domestic policy would give us advice that we should loan and room. And she has a backbone like a ramroD He says the moral compass of a saint, this woman knows what shes doing i promise you if you like Kamala Harris as president will be the best you will have ever made me decide to use the spine of this economy should be historic pro union president. So folks, we got one more job to do together. Let me ask you, are ready to fight ready to win are you ready, elect Kamala Harris, our next president . The process are you ready to make Donald Trump a loser again ive never been more optimistic about america. We have to remember who we are. Where the united states of america. Theres nothing nothing. I mean, its the bottom of my heart. Theres nothing beyond our capacity when we do it together and that means luck. My friends, our great Vice President pence, united states, Kamala Harris it is good to be. In the House Labor and it is good to be back good ibw local five. And can we please give it up again for our president , Joe Biden now. I dont have to tell the brothers, the sisters of labor that you really get to know somebody when youre in middle of a fight when times are hard, when the forces are mighty, when people dont believe something can get done and they have 1,000 excuses for why it cant get done i have spent more time with this extraordinary Human Being when the cameras were not in the room when the stakes were high, when the heat was intense and Joe Biden has always stood with the workers of america ive been with him when hell bring folks into the Oval Office and you know, how joking gets sometimes he doesnt spare words. Its sometimes the cameras are not in the room when he has those conversations because the thing about the Joe Biden i know and i know, you know, because he has been a fraying friend of labor for so long for his whole life. Joe biden can be quite impatient. And thats a good thing for that kind of leader Quiet Impatient and i say to all of the friends here, The Press thats in the Room History will show what we hear no. Joe biden has been one of the mosT Transformative President S in the united states that we have and it comes from and you know, joe and i talked a lot about the fact that we are so proud to be the most pro Union Administration in american history and as we know, Joe Still got a lot of work to do so lets listen also understand that so i want to thank all the incredible leader im here today, including the governor shapiro, lieutenant governor davis, senator casey, who we will reelect this november Fair Game gaining. President president who for all the leaders of labor who are here, all the Union Members who are here. So ill just get right to a few lines i love Labor Day celebrating Labor Day. And pittsburgh, of course, is a cradle of the american Labor Movement. It is the birthplace they have founD Headquarters at the steelworkers home to firefight as local one and a Chorus Barack Ibw local good morning. Now hundred and 50 years, the brothers and sisters of labor have helped lead the fight for fair pay, better benefits, and safe working conditions, and every person in our nation has benefited from that work everywhere i go, i tell people you may not be a Union Member but youve got to thank unions for that Fiveday Workweek thank you. Unions. But family because when you wages Go Up, everybodys wages Go Up when Union Workplaces are safer oh, workplaces are safer when you and are strong america is strong we, are clear not only has pittsburgh shaped the history of americas Labor Movement today, you are also shaping its future in 2021 with my dear friend, the secretary, marty walsh, to the president appointed to be secretary of labor. He and i hosted a meeting right here. Its local. And it was part of the white House LaborTask Force that i lead that day we met with a group of Computer Programmers who were working to form a union one month later, they signed their contract and became the first one of the first Technology Unions in our nation on the shoulder of all those who have been here and fought the good fight. So pittsburgh i remind us of that to say together, we are fighting to build an economy that works for all working people and that has always been the vision of the Labor Movement that is the vision of our campaign. You know, in this election, there are two very different visions for our nation one, hours focused on the future the other focused on the past we fight, for the future we fight for a future of dignity, risk fact, an opportunity for all people we fight knowing is some backward thinking for those folks who have been suggesting for years that the measure of the strength of a leader is based on who you beat down. You know, thats the stuff theyre pushing thats the measure of the strength of a leader is based on who you beat down when we know the true measure of the strength of a leader is based on who you lift up workers families anD He said you know, what so were 64 days out from this Election Ballots in pennsylvania will start dropping in 14 days 14 days and this election is as much as anything else, a fight for the promise of america the promise of america, we love our country we love our country and we know it is one of the highest forms of patriotism to fight for the ideals of our country. And thats what this election is about. And about the promise of america. And i dont need to tell unions what the promise looks like. Its what you do every day but as we like to move forward down, trump is trying to to pull us backward including back to a time before workers have the freedom to organize well, the courts will handle that we will handle november about november. Let the court were not going and one of the ways one of the ways were going to guarantee, we dont go back is that we remember right . It is important to remember what that was and what it is remember as president Donald Trump blocked overtime benefits for millions of workers he opposed efforts to raise the minimum wage as the President Said, he appointed Union Busters to the national labor Relations Board and dont forget, he supported socalled right to work laws and if Donald Trump were to be reelected, he intends to give more Tax Cuts to billionaires and big corporations he intends to cut social Security And Medicare he wants to impose what in effect would be a national Sales Tax i call it the trump national Sales Tax on everyday products and basic necessities that would cost a typical american family. The economists have said this almost 4,000 a year he intends to repeal the affordable Care Act and take us back to what we remember because it wasnt now long ago. Was it time when insurance companies could deny people with preexisting conditions. You remember what that was children with asthma, Breast Cancer survivors, grandparents with diabetes well up america has tried those failed policies before, and we are not going back back and instead and instead, we fight for a future where no person has to go broke just because they get sick and so, building on the work of president Joe Biden and i and the work we have done in the White House, we will continue to strengthen the affordable Care Act and make Prescription Drugs affordable for all americans. We fight for a future where every worker has the freedom so organize and we will will cast the lungs we we see and know and fight for a future where every person has the opportunity, not just to get by but to get ahead and so we will continue to build what i call an opportunity economy. So that every american has an opportunity to buy a home or start a business, or Build Intergenerational wealth and that matches clare dreams and ambitions and aspirations because of course thats the nature of who we are as americans we have dreams, we can see what is possible, unburdened by what has been and we have aspirations. We have ambitions, and the system that is a good system is one that supports that and allows People Opportunity to go where they can see an imagine themselves to be. Thats what im talking about when i talk about an opportunity economy, we fight for our future where every senior can retire with dignity. And so we well continue to defend social Security And Medicare and we will continue to strengthen americas manufacturing sector. And on that point, the president mentioned it u. S. Steel is in historic american company and it is vital for our nation to maintain strong American Steel companies. And i couldnt agree more with President Biden us still should remain american owned an american operated of america and all of americas workers so friends 64 days until the most election of our lives and probably one of the most important in the life of our nation truly and we know this is going to be a tight race to the very end its going to be a tight race to the very end. So lets not pay too much attention to those polls. Because as unions and labor knows best, we know what its like to be the underdog and we are the underdogs in this race. And we have some hard work done ahead of us but heres the beauty of us in this room we like hard work look the strength that determination in the hard work of the leaders in this room to knock on doors to get folks to the polls. And bluntly put because the people in here do it to help us win Pennsylvania Today youre ready to make your voices heard believe in freedom believe an opportunity believe in the promise of America God bless you. Got we have been listening to Vice President calmly harris teaming up there as you can see with president Joe Biden in the crucial battleground, state of pennsylvania, to rally Union Voters on this Labor Day. The president and Vice President in pittsburgh together their first joint appearance on the Campaign Trail since the democratic national convention, where the Vice President officially became the Partys President ial nominee. If youre just joining us, im Alex Marquardt in the situation room, Wolf Blitzer is off today what we just heard there from the Vice President and the president were quite Union And Labor focus remarks by, by the both of them as well as leaders from Pennsylvania Governor Josh shapiro, center, bob casey, and labor leaders. They talked about being the most prounion ministration in u. S history anD Harris, theyre casting this election as a choice between one side looking forward and the other backwards. She also describeD Her vision for what she called an opportunity the economy before finishing up describing a tight race and claiming that the democratic ticket are the underdogs in this race. I want to bring in our political panel to break all of this down. Jasmine wright, what is your takeaway from what we just heard from Kamala Harris and President Biden, what does it say about this campaign . Going forward yeah, well, look, it was a direct appeal to Union Voters and that base that democrats very much so need to win in november, i think it was a couple of things i would i think it wasnt explicit recognition that this is the last stretch of the campaign. So therefore, the Harris Campaign really needs to step up their efforts in trying to get these voters to come home to them, come home to the Vice President herself, come november. I also think it was an implicit recognition that more needs to be done in those Blue Wall States, obviously earlier today we saw hard michigan Governor Walz forces and wisconsin now theyre in pittsburgh, pennsylvania, really trying to shore up that Blue Wall for their path to 70. I was talking to one adviser over the weekend and they said for the Harris Campaign, all lies are going to be on pennsylvania, particularly for these next two weeks, as we know that she was there today Governor Walz will be there in the next few days and then obviously the Debate And Pennsylvania next week, but ultimately, i think that what this really was which just say another chance to show the voters who are in President Bidens backyard and who have been in President Bidens backyard for 40 years, that the Vice President is somebody that they should win their support to a real passing photonic, that what was different from the last time that we saw them on the Campaign Trail was that the president actually spoke before the Vice President s. That was an important thing that i think that were going to continue to see going on as they try to make that passing of the baton very, very clear to the american voters yeah, really emphasizing there that she is the top of the ticket. Now, build a blasio, what we just saw to Jasmine Point the chants of thank you, joe, throughout this rally, the tributes to biden these union heavy remarks by both of them. What does that tell you about how you think the president is going to be deployed by the Harris Campaign . Well, alex, i think first of all jasmine makes the exact right point this campaign is not taking for granted the Blue Wall and im really happy to see that actually, because weve seen over competent campaigns in the past women need all the votes we can get in those states the fact that theyre so focused on labor, in particular this is an area where democrats have lost a lot of support to trump. LetS Be Honest about that and theyre saying, i think Kamala Harris is saying the things to get people back in favor of the proactive strengthened the right to unionize to make sure that unionbusting has met with real penalties. She obviously saying u. S. Still needs to stay in america. These are really important messages for folks who might be tempted to support Donald Trump. So i haD Helped get those folks back. I think Joe Biden is exactly where he needs to be in the Blue Wall States talking to labor i wouldnt necessarily say use them anywhere, everywhere. I think this is the perfect place. AnD He is someone who actually helpeD Her get some of those votes back let me bring in cnns kayla tausche. She is in pittsburgh. She is at this rally it kayla, this is a significant moment in his hand okay. And it comes a monthandahalf after President Biden dropped out of the race very quickly endorsing his Vice President , Kamala Harris. Now there on the Campaign Trail together for the first time with harris so at the top of the ticket its its definitely a Turning Point in this campaign, alex, theres no question about it the first time that breads biden is stumping with Harriswalz Signage behinD Him. And while aides say that he was excited to take the trail today, had to make the case for his Vice President. There was all so some width, wistfulness in his remarks as he described the ark of a decadeslong career which he described as being backed by Organized Labor. Every step of the Way Way starting from an endorsement from the steelworkers when he was 29yearsold, and then he went into some of the actions that he took as president during this path administration, crossing the Picket Lines with auto workers endorsing the american ownership of an iconic still company here in pittsburgh. And also encouraging the electrical workers union, where we are right now to invite more women into their union that seemed to be a metaphor of sorts, where he transitioned into making the case for biden president harris essentially encouraging the Union Members here in the room to invite them into their lives as well. And whats interesting is what we hearD Heard from Pennsylvania Governor Josh shapiro, where he told the attendees here today that they need to talk to their colleagues in particular and encourage them to vote for Vice President harris then Governor Walz, which is interesting considering that many of these unions are conducting their own internal polling to see exactly who their memberships support even as Vice President harris has secured the endorsement from a major leaders of these unions. But clearly there is still quite a bit of work for them to do. Alex all right. Kayla tausche, she is pittsburgh. Stay with us. Im Gonna Go back to my panel, kristen holmes. We just saw so a new poll this time from Abc News ipsos, and the Washington Post, harris enjoying a wide Favorability Advantage over the former president , 46 see her favorably compared to 43 unfavorably. Meanwhile, trump is underwater by 25 points, 33 to 50 58, excuse me. The Washington Post writes this about the Trump Campaign strategy, quote with little chance of improving trumps standing, trumps advisers see the only option as damaging hers, kristen, how are they planning to damage her more well, alex, its been really interesting to watch them try and damage her over the last several weeks, they have tried various different lines on her Attack Backing her and none of them have really landed the way that they have wanted to. One of the things that youre going to see is a lot of linking her to president Joe Biden, one of the things weve reported time and time again is that they believe that their biggest chance to win in november is by essentially running the same campaign that they did against president Joe Biden, but making harris the incumbent. So we using events like today, theyre showing Harris And Biden sidebyside and saying that harris is policies are the same as Joe Bidens policies, particularly when it comes to some of the more unpopular policies on inflation, on immigration. Thats what they want to do. But whether or not thats actually landing has yet to be seen. It doesnt seem as though the american public is treating harris as the incumbent, that the Trump Campaign would like them to do. So as we move forward, i will tell you alex speaking to a number of his advisors earlier today, they do feel like they are in a better position now than they were a few weeks ago when it felt as though harriss bounce was not going to end and there was a lot of concern around the boost in her poll numbers, around the enthusiasm arounD Harris right now, they feel like this is starting to settle and they have a real race, but theyre saying the same thing to their supporters. Theres that youre hearing harris aide to hers, which is we are the underdog. We really have to fight here. And i think its clear both sides believed that this race is going to be determined by razor thin margins and they are trying to find any votes that they can to secure. And that includes for at least Donald Trumps team trying to siphon away some of those labor for votes, some of those Rank And FileUnion Members that Donald Trump got back in 2016 that helped propel him to the White House. Youre going to see a lot of thaT Trying to dig away at various Voting Blocs as theyve tried to get as many votes as they can ahead of november. Frank luntz, the Top Line of that poll was that nationally harris has a small lead over trump, who was 50 to 46 that she did not get a Postconvention Bump in that poll. Are you surprised by that . And what do you say to what harris . Just said that they believe they are the underdogs i dont think that really matters. I think what matters is are the two issues that the public says, they prioritize in this election which is affordability, not Inflation But Affordability of food and fuel, housing, healthcare. And the idea that thats gotten worse over the last three years, not better. And immigration which is basically an issue of personal security and safety. And whether the borders controlled or not. She Vice President harris has a clear advantage in personality. If this is an election about who you trust, will you have confidence and who you like . She wins clearly if this isnt election of our policy about where things have gone over the last threeandahalf years and where theyre headed, Donald Trump has the advantage. The problem of the Trump Campaign is that the candidate himself is actually undermine that message with personal attacks that voters dont like. Challenge with harris said she walks into a Union Hall and doesnt address the two issues that union people prioritize the most ive done a fair amount of polling within the Union Community and there was definitely a split Government Unions and teachers unions absolutely support harris by significant margins but their traits, the people who work with their hands are evenly split between the democrats and republicans. Republicans. Ive never seen that before. She walked into ground zero. Everything she said was effective which he missed the two issues that matter most. And in the end, at least in the debate, shes going to have to address them, all is a very interesting moment on the Campaign Trail and certainly beginning of what its going to be a busy week for both sides out there in those Battleground States. Com today, we are following Breaking News on Vice PresidentKamala Harris and president Joe Biden appearing together at a rally in pennsylvania, justice short time ago and joining me now to discuss that more is democrat from the Battleground State of pennsylvania, Congressman Brendan Boyle. Congressman boyle, thanks so much for joining us. You just heard that rally alongside u. S. President biden, Vice President harris, leaning into their support for and from Union Voters during this first joint appearance. Since harris became the democratic nominee, how important do you think it is . That that Voting Bloc for that Voting Bloc that the Harris Campaign, win in pennsylvania anD How is President Biden going to be an asset to her there . Well, its great To Be With You and one of the things that Joe Biden started back in 2018 before he officially ran. And again in 2019 was the kickoff the Fall Campaign . Spending Labor Day in pennsylvania, a number of those years it was in pittsburgh last year i was with him at the Labor Day parade in philadelphia with President Biden retiring and leaving the stage, it would be natural that a number of us here would be worried that the special attention, the President Biden would give us mike Drop Off that has not been the case. So the fact that you had both the president and the Vice President who i hope will be the neck resonate here in the keystone state. Again, on another Labor Day, just shows the incredible importance but the Harris Walz Ticket whats first on pennsylvania, but then second on Organized Labor as a whole harris finished off her remarks. Theyre talking about being the underdogs, highlighting what a tight race it is. Perhaps nowhere more so then in these Swing States like pennsylvania, the latest polling in pennsylvania shows that they are Neck And Neck in a recent poll, harris held a slim lead over trump 50 to 47 . That is just outside the margin of error. So what do you think harris needs to do to win pennsylvania . Well, first, whoever wins pennsylvania will be the next president. That was the case in 2016 pennsylvania decided the election, unfortunately, in Donald Trumps direction. In 2020, Joe Biden was able to win pennsylvania back and thus able to win the White House back. And itll be the same. And in 2024, the one challenge and the reason why pennsylvania is such a crucial Battleground State is that it includes so many different slices of the electorate. So you actually canT Trust. You dont have the luxury to focus on trust. One thing we have urban, suburban, rural we have immigrants, especially in the Philadelphia Area very in places in lancashire and reading, we have a lot of Blue Collar voters of all different ethnicities, but especially white. We have parts of the state that are kind of the beginning of the midwest. And then we have a big part of the state like where i live, which has very much east coast. So in order to campaign in pennsylvania, you have to be everywhere at the same time from philadelphia to pittsburgh, to eerie, and you have to get here early and often a Harris Campaign is doing that. And the Trump Campaign is not. Where is Donald Trump today . Its Labor Day. How is he not on the campaign . And trail. I dont think ive ever seen that in my lifetime from a president ial nominee of either Party Congressman that we have heard the former president going after harris repeatedly for moving away from some of her previously held positions. This is how harris responded to that criticism in her exclusive interview with cnn in 2019, you said, quote, there is no question. Im in favor of banning fracking. Fracking is no is it pretty big issue, particularly in your Mustwin State of pennsylvania. Do you still want to ban fracking . No. And i made that clear on the Debate Stage in 2020 that i would not ban fracking as Vice President , i did not ban fracking as president. I will not ban fracking congressman, do you believe that voters will see her changing positions on fracking and other issues as authentic well, first, if Theres Anyone who is an expert on changing your position routinely, it is Donald Trump, after all, i think what over the course of the last week he now has had four different positions on abortion. So so trump would be would be the expert on this topic. I do think most voters recognize that as you get more information, as you get more experience, perhaps as you hold a different job, which was the case with Kamala Harris going from a senator from California ToVice President of the united states. And the biden administration that there would be a natural evolution. Look, i know that. I do not have 100 of the same position its today that i first had 15 years ago when i was first elected to office. Thats part of growing. I think thats natural the bottom line is, did you ultimately arrive at the position that is right on policy and in the case that Kamala Harris, she did the natural Gas Industry is important to jobs in pennsylvania more so western part of the state, frankly, than the eastern twothirds of the state. But im glad that she ultimately arrived at the position that she did.
