you every day, hurry. >> there'll be gone in a flash designer sales that up to 70% or so of gilt.com today today on inside politics, a convicted criminal who's only out for himself. that's how the biden campaign is labeling donald trump in a new ad as the current president, leans into attacking the former president for his 34 felony convictions. >> plus who wants to be a running mate. >> countless republicans they're buying to be on the ticket with donald trump, but only one contender was chosen as the favorite at a conservative conference this weekend. and the surgeon general is morning that the threat of social media to children is so dire. it needs a warning label just like cigarettes and alcohol. i'm dan a bash. let's go behind the head leinz and inside politics first step, the biden campaign is erin think it's first ads targeting donald trump's new status as a convicted felon. it's part of a 50 $50,000,000 ad campaign this month that team biden hopes will remind voters why they rejected trump four years ago cnn, arlette saenz is live at the white house. >> are arlette talk about the reporting that you have about the decision-making that went into this because we definitely heard both sides of the argument from lots of democrats about how heavily till into trump's convictions. yeah, this really does mark a significant escalation of president biden's attacks on trump's after months of really refraining from using his legal issues in any of their campaign argument since the campaign today is now really sharpening their attack on trump releasing this ad directly calling him a convicted criminal at a time when they have their eyes on that first debate in just ten days. now, with the biden campaign is doing with this ad is laying out all of the criminal cases that have faced four former president donald trump really leaning into the fact that they're using these legal issues as part of their argument to that that trump is unfit to serve in the office of the presidency take a listen to how this ad is trying to frame the election for voters in the courtroom, we see donald trump for who he is. >> he's been convicted of 34 felonies found liable for sexual assault and he committed financial fraud meanwhile, joe biden's been working and what the narrator goes on to say is that this is a choice between a convicted criminal who is looking out for himself and president biden, who was working for american families. >> now, this will be part of a $50,000,000 ad campaign in the month of june hitting television additions and internet streaming platforms. to make this argument directly to battleground state voters. and it's also coming on the heels of a high dollar fundraiser. president i didn't attended over the weekend with former president barak obama brought in 30 million. and that one night alone, that is the largest democratic fundraiser in us history. and the president and obama also use that really to try to make a stark warning about what a second trump presidency could hold with our eye on the debate as the two men prepare to face off for the first time since 2020. >> wow, the largest haul and history for democrats, i actually didn't know that that's really interesting. thank you so much. or lead. appreciate that. let's kick off this week with a panel of terrific reporters. cnn's glory border, seung min kim of the associated press, cnn, geoff zelenskyy, and cnns, alaimo, train happy monday, one and all. i'm geoff zelenskyy. i know you've been doing some according about just like i asked arlette about the decision-making process and the pros and cons that were debated internally about this ad campaign. >> look so much hand-wringing among democrats should president biden in the campaign go after the convictions? should he not focus on his own issues one democrats said, that's largely academic. the reality is, he needs to improve his standing and the summer they think is the time to try and keep reminding voters of that contrast. it clearly hasn't said in with them yet. so they're wondering and hoping that this ad by will do so, uh, one thing that biden campaign has is money because of that arlette just saying that the fundraising campaigns have had so they have the luxury of now please to have spending 50 million on this add it's pretty extraordinary when voters americans in the summer or doing other things, but they want to make this, the conversation going into the debate next week, and they want to frame this, but now we have a really extraordinary moment. >> both sides the trump sayyed and the biden campaign are both using his convictions to raise money and define this race on the trump side, they're saying it's part of an unfair prosecution, a revenge. they're out to get him. and by extension, voters and the biden campaign, this saying is unfit for office. so, so unusual that one on very thing is being used by both sides in different ways. >> i love when we get a geoff zheli boiling, boiling it all down moment you have been doing reporting with your sources inside the trump campaign. what are they saying about this new kidney? >> well, look, i think the strategy here is going to be that they're going to continue to argue that this is a sign that his conviction, but also all of the legal battles that donald trump is facing is assigned that democrats and the biden campaign are trying to prosecute their political opponent. we saw after this app is released, several of donald trump's top advisors, a spokesperson and criticizing this ad for just that on social media. now i'm also told when i talked to the trump campaign that when it comes to debate prep next week, they know that this is going to be a core potential question that will come up. and so they are preparing for that, even though donald trump's campaign says he doesn't need to do debate prep. he's not going to be doing any mock debate. we'll see if that happens or not. but i know that they are walking through some of the key issues and questions that they know. the former president might struggle with. and this is definitely one of those themes. i think is just, is a part of the biden campaign trying to remind voters who donald trump is and who he has been. and there's a lot of talk about trump amnesia voters have forgotten about donald trump and all the rest. and i think this is one way, and this is all pretty current stuff. of saying wait a minute, you can't just gloss over this stuff. here's the difference between these, these two fellows. and by the way character, the issue of character is making a big comeback in this campaign, not, not. we talked about competence a lot and all the rest. you know, we've heard jill biden talk about character. i think we're going to see a lot of surrogates talk about the character of these two men. and i think this is one way to do it at that's such an important point maybe to help put meat on the bone of that point or wow, maybe it's better to go into going a different direction as i play this sound byte what you were saying about this issue of donald trump's legal battles and how now the biden campaign is using it as a weapon. and the trump campaign has been and trump himself has been very much saying, imu today. there, they're going after me tomorrow. it's going to be you and they're taking it even a step further. seat. bannon was speaking at a right-wing conference in detroit over the weekend, one that trump attended. as well. listen to the way he framed the same topic november 5th is judgment day. >> january 20, 2025 is accountability de gonna get every single receipt? >> and to the fullest extension of the law, you are going to be investigated prosecuted in incarcerated. ladies and gentlemen, it's very simple. >> victory or death yeah i mean that very strong words there, but it's also kind of echoing the messaging that were coming out of donald trump himself. he talks about how it was taught when he's talking to voters, how i am your retribution. and that is what that is one of the things that the biden campaign is focusing on. you look at the ad that was released this morning. it talks about how funneled trump is out for himself while president biden has out there working for you. and that is among one of the many contrast that they want to make with president former president trump before the campaign, because i do think they're aware that president biden's own numbers are good right now, if you look historically, presidents, incumbent presidents who have had numbers as low as biden's just don't get reelected. so they know right now their main focus has to be pulling trump down. and in addition to lifting biden up, but really pulling trunk down and another way to look at this is argument is being made by both candidates in both campaigns that i'm the least bad option. i'm the best bad option. i mean, obviously neither of them would think that they are a bad option, but they see the polls and they see what i'm going to show you right now, which is what is now become known in political parlance as double haters. and that means that voters who are just not into either one of these candidates look at where we are right now. that applies to 220, 5% of people who talked to piu in an a recent poll. but just look at the difference. if you look historically between now with biden and trump then trump. and biden 13%. four years ago, hillary clinton, it's maybe at vs trump, it was maybe the closest that it's been as it is now. but i mean, we remember a lot of these very tough races, even mccain obama, 13%. you go back to 1988, a george hw bush and michael dukakis only 5% of people said that they were unhappy with their choices, 5% versus 25% right now, gloria, well they don't like them. i mean, they, they don't like either of these candidates they think they're both. well, particularly biden, i think he's too old they don't see any great ideas. they don't see any rescue. people are looking for a rescue thanks, haven't been going well. and a lot of people are full of grievance about it and they don't like donald trump's personality, but they think he's a fighter and they can accept joe biden's personality, but they think he's weak so it's not great choices out there for them and what do they do people are undecided. voters are like, well, maybe i'll give rfk jr. look, but there but what about them? do you like well, i don't really know. >> he's not the other two. yeah. for sure. i mean, one thing that has changed so much obviously since that 5% number 1988. yeah, it's just the partisan media and social media. if you go on tiktok, if you look at one highly edited a moment of biden or something that's negative, you are suddenly fed 100 of them. so just how we get information. but one thing i think talking to voters out there who are sort of exhausted by at all the question is, will they see this election as an important one to vote in? and that's what both sides are really trying to do. so it is still early in the sense of people are living their lives in the summer. and when i go out and ask butters, their opinions are like, why are you doing this now and like give me an at it. so i do think that double haters are not in unenthusiastic vote counts the same as an enthused because he asked you the question is do they go and vote? that's why ground game matters. that's why some republicans are worried about the trump campaign does not have one. so here we are in, trump is out there telling people i don't really need your vote. yeah. well, i don't i don't know that his campaigns thrilled about that help. yeah standby because it's coming up notice he happens spare the list of potential vice presidents. >> would anybody ohio senator, one, the vp straw poll at the turning point, action convention of far-right organization with close ties to trump. and the mega movement here's vance at that conference talking about what trump needs in a vice president we need to have people who are supporting trump not tried to stab me in the back. >> it's very, very simple. we people who are supporting the agenda, fighting for the agenda, not fighting against it when the cameras are off panel is back, alaina, you have been doing reporting along with our colleagues about where donald trump's head is, where his campaign is. >> and i'll just put up on the screen again, all of the contenders who we are told have gotten paperwork in order to start the background process to start being considered, right? right. well, it's funny because these are the same names, i think all of these faces you see on the screen are surprising. we've been talking about them for months and months, however donald trump and his campaign consistently say he's going to make an announcement close to the convention. i'm told behind the scenes that's still the timeline as well but also when i talked his advisers, they say, look, the list is still fluctuating one day, j.d. vance might be the one that he's thinking about and asking questions at when he's at merrill logo or his club and ben minster saying, what do you think of him the thing that i think everyone has to keep in mind is that, and this is what they tell me. this is donald trump are talking about until he actually announces who he is going to pick. it's so hard to play this game. and we know from just covering these race or these campaigns in the past that it's always hard to predict in the horse race politics of vp steaks. however, with donald trump, it's even harder. yeah yeah. yeah. i remember covering the process, 2016, how will he or won't he he was up in the last minute when he picked mike pence. as you all come in, i want you to listen to another contender who is out over the weekend, byron donald's talking about him as a potential right that's obviously the toughest job, the biggest job, not just in our politics, but really frankly in the world. >> look, i think that i would have an ability to step in. them, actually be intelligent. i can sift through issues really willie, well, it's about judgments about logic streams it's about how you make decisions at the end of the day. do i believe in myself 100%? i do this audition process is like nothing. >> we've seen. it's also about loyalty, and that's what every one of these television interviews is also designed to do to see who can appear to be the most loyal or whatnot. 2, the former president. look, there's a reason that he talks about different people every day because part of it is to have them in the spotlight day after day. sometimes he travels with doug burger them the north dakota governor, sometimes these with the j.d. vance is he will be later this week. sometimes he's with tim scott, so it's just 2 a get a evolving interview process. it's sometimes before an event. so the reality is the end of the day, who can be the most loyal? it's donald trump, it's different than 2016 in a sense, because he doesn't need the piece of evangelical voters that mike pence brought him or that sort of the backing of conservatives. you need someone to be loyal. well, it's, it's loyal, but it's also i'm told i'm sure you're all told it's captain obvious here for anybody who's watched donald trump for more than five seconds, he wants somebody who's good on tv. >> and by the way, speaking of that, that ties that we showed of trump saying to the audience, maybe i'll just pick him. he was talking about byron donald's, so at any given moment, he's talking about different things but the difference also now is that whoever he picks is going to be the heir apparent the republican nomination for the right time. right. and he i don't know that trump thinks about that that much. he thinks about who's going to be loyal to me, who's going to look in this sounds ridiculous, but who's going to look like a vice president? i mean, he thought that mike pence with the white hair and all the rest look like a vice president and he thought that rex tiller person with his white hair looked like as secretary of state at central casting. so he is casting his vice president, obviously loyalty matters, et cetera. but when the two hold their arms up together, it's gotta be a picture that donald trump likes and you can't underestimate that. >> well, one of the people who it seems pretty clear, he thinks would look great in the picture with him is doug bergamo? >> yes. and on the loyalty question, burg, i'm i mean, j.d. vance was extremely critical of donald trump in 20 hey, 16, we can talk about that another time. but when it comes to bergen, he said originally that he wouldn't do business. >> doug burger was very wealthy from from business and he said that he wouldn't do business with donald trump. >> well, over the weekend, he changed his tune i wish every american could see him. the way katherine i've got to norm in the last six months because this guy is tireless. he's committed, he's smart, he's funny. he's nothing like he's portrayed in the press. and so if you asked me that same question today, i'd be like absolutely whitley, i would do business with them because i mean, think about how successfully been whether it's a whatever it is i mean, whether it's in tv real estate, politics all the things that he's done, we should be grateful that we've got someone who's willing with that kind of talent from the private sector that's willing to put themselves back into the presidential race again right? >> i mean, not only are these television interviews a chance to show their loyalty or 2, tout their own credentials. but it's a good clean up opportunity for some of these people who have had critical comments for about donald trump in the past, you're talking about j.d. vance, doug burger, even tom cotton yesterday, he sort of massage the differences between him and donald trump when it came to the certification of the 2020 election. so this is what donald trump likes to see. he likes to see his guys on television saying nice things about him and he'll absorb all that information until right up until i feel exactly how ruby i will say to you though, just with all from all my conversations with the trump campaign, you brought up, who could whoever he picks could potentially be the heir apparent. donald trump actually is thinking about that and my conversations and he said this publicly, so he wants someone who could potentially be a vice president god for he that's hose words. anything happens. but he also it is loyalty. he also really want someone that he really likes and that he thinks will not get in his way. and that's really what a lot of this comes down to when you hear donald trump, even in private conversations, he says, he doesn't think the vp is going to make a difference and who wins the election. so he wants someone who he likes and he can get along with what he had to leave the party had the most loyal vice president ever in my pants. remember mike pence saying we all stand on donald trump's broad shoulders and until until january all right, guys, we're going to take a quick break. >> very different story coming up vice president kamala harris will highlight hamas is depraved use of sexual violence as a weapon of war. i'll talk to a lawmaker who it's heard some of the first-hand accounts from former hostages held and gaza. that's next historically the soviet union kill traders i started to run to kgb cars, had come behind i didn't know what to do. >> secrets and democratic congresswoman debbie wasserman schultz of florida. >> thank you so much for being here. look amit story should make every human being six sexual violence. we know that sheryl sandberg documented those horrific story, so that the world could bear witness is out denialism and yet denialism still exists how do you combat that well, dana, thanks for shining a spotlight on this the primary way that we combat it is by doing exactly what you and i are doing here. >> and that's making sure that we can shine in a bright spotlight on the sexual and gender-based violence that hamas perpetrated on its victims on october 7th. and that very likely, we know are continuing to perpetrate that sexual violence and sheryl sandberg's film is searing but i'm really proud of the vice presidents. and the second gentlemen for using the white house is platform to make sure that the world knows that hamas used sexual violence and continues to use it as a weapon of war, is violating women. israeli wimmen, and i hosted a bhoram at the second element on capitol hill a few months ago. and the israeli police came and showed us videos that were taken by hamas terrorists themselves engaging in the kind of sexual violence that cheryl's film shows cutting off the breasts while raping their victims and first-hand accounts from first responders as well as others who israelis who were hiding from hamas terrorists and the denialism is outrageous yeah, aph two, we have to make sure that we knock it down and as we both said, the vice president and the second gentlemen, they're hosting an event at the white house. what what words? do you want to hear from the vice president during that event today well, i'm confident, don't hear what she and the second gentlemen have continued to stay and that is that there was sexual and gender-based violence that occurred on october 7th. >> hamas uses it as a weapon of war and that any organization either international or domestic, that denies it is essentially committing allowing the commission of acts of violence again and again, there can't be an exception for jewish victims. there can't be an exception for israelis the idea that it's me too, unless you're a jew is unacceptable. and when you have republicans and congress, like we did last week, defund the un population, population fund, which provides resources all over the world to combat sexual violence against women are across the globe. you can see where republican priorities are compared to president biden and vice president harris, who are using the administration's platform to lead in making sure that these crimes are not only not denied, but that there are consequences for them. >> just a couple of quick questions about things related to this coming up in the united states congress. and on the campaign trail first, you spent time in israel since october 70, met with prime minister netanyahu. he is scheduled to address congrats july 24th. when you attend the speech and do agree with the notion of him being invited in the first place i will be attending the speech and i of course believed that the leader of israel, one of the united he's made. every member has to make their own decision about whether to attend, but not only do i own my constituents that, but it's a relationship that we need to honor. >> and the war in the middle east is presenting a real challenge for the democratic party. it's playing out of the ballot box. this month, there is a primary contest in new york, the 16th district. they're incumbant jamaal bowman, who has called stories of israeli women that hamas raped, quote propaganda. he's being challenged by george latimer, who says he is unabashedly pro israel. again, this is a democratic primary. have you made a decision? are you going to weigh in and support one or the other? >> well, i'll say about that race is that it is terribly, terribly unacceptable that the rhetoric that jamaal bowman is used. ease, engaged in anti-semitic rhetoric. he has the entire eight months until just last week when it was clear polling was problematic for him finally condemned the hamas perpetrated against israelis on october 7 the he is engaged in conduct unbecoming of a member of congress, and it's terribly unfortunate. and his constituents will have to decide whether they want to return him to the congress. >> yeah, and he also i'll walk back the denialism later of the sexual assault that went on on october 7. but it sounds like not but you're stopping short of endorsing his opponent this is erased in new york and i generally don't get involved in congressional races outside of my home state only occasionally. >> i'm no longer the chair of the dnc, so i'm staying focused on florida and among young voters by winning a bigger share of older voters around geoff zelenskyy. here now, but he recently went to this swing state of michigan to take a look at the outreach and talk to those voters himself at 86, does he ferris spends no time worrying about the ages of the oldest american presidential candidates for those who do this loyal president i didn't supporter has this to say about donald trump? >> he's way less capable in the brain area in the brain area delicate way to put it as trump turns 78 on friday, just three years younger than biden's at one age is an unmistakable part of the race. but the biden campaign is suddenly embracing it in a different way. >> i'm a senior and i vote turning to ferriss and other seniors to build a critical piece of this coalition so i love when you go out and do these stories obviously, my panel is back here. >> i want to play one other soundbite from a different voter who you talk to. her name is linda van weird in also of michigan let's listen to what she said a lot of people have said biden's old. >> yes, he is old, but he's not insane and he has the experience and the knowledge that we need and he is the man for this particular position at this time i just want to say whatever linda's buying are eating, i want some she does not look like a senior anyway, back to the content of what she was saying. well, look, one of the things is really interesting about this. i mean, every four years, obviously the ages of voters changed. so now baby boomers make up the vast majority of senior voters, some seven an then ten seniors are baby boomers that did not that was not the case in 2008 when barak obama was on the ballot, for example. so that's one of the dynamics there. but look, it's been nearly a quarter century since al gore ran in 2000, that a democratic candidate has won the seat in your vote. the reason the biden campaign is going after them so much, it's a part of their coalition that actually has stuck with him. younger voters have been a problem. voters of color have been a huge challenge for him. but one of the things is they pay more attention to the news. they're focused more on history the democracy argument of resonates more with them protecting medicare fair is important on and on. so that is why the biden campaign last week launch day seniors for harrison biden and we went out to michigan to have conversations with some of these look, it's not a monolith. of course, but there absolutely is a an interesting conversation there and voters of the president's age had a lot of interesting things to say about his age, saying, look, they it's a contrast between trump and biden and almost all of them brought up trump's age. there's of course, feature and 78 last friday page was everything was going to say they're both seniors. and just so people understand how important of a voting block this is. i want you to look at the 2020 exit polls and the key swing states and how big of a share in pennsylvania, 28% of the voters were 65 and older, michigan, 30 wisconsin, 26 arizona, 31 nevada, 30, giorgia, which that's only 19, but if you look at the blue wall right and i just looked at a market university paul, because the issue one big issue for senior voters is of course, medicare and social security and in that poll, 47% of them said biden would do a better job saving medicare and social security compared to its 35% or something for trump. that's a big margin and that, you know, that you have to pay attention to because the democrats are going to talk about how republicans wanted to reduce medicare and social security. and you can't get away from that issue. no matter remember, biden thomas, them they weren't going to reduce it at the state of the union but it is a huge issue for those voters. and i don't know how republicans get around it. >> i just want to emphasize what you just brought up, which is where seniors have voted, how they voted party y's over the past more than half a century, if you look at this, it really was the only democrats who have one seniors, bill clinton twice, and then al gore in 2000 right? right. it's really remarkable and it's not only president biden's promised to protect medicare and we'll just security, but they're also selling what they have already done in president biden's terms, some of them more popular initiatives that the white house talks about is capping the insulin let's cost, well, that's for medicare beneficiaries. so these seniors know that this is a president that has already done things that are impacting their lives directly right now. and again, the biden campaign and geoff alluded to this dividing campaigns old theory of the case is that if and when people know about the dangers of trump, they will ultimately pull the lever for biden will seniors are much more likely to be paying attention to the news they have the memory of the trump years. so that's why right now the biden campaign loves the senior narrative and they're having a lot of fun with it, right? >> now all right. everybody standby because still had social media could come with a warning label why the surgeon general is cracking down on what he calls a mental health emergency, stay with us simon's are going on in the tornado here. i'm thinking, i'm going to die and i thought that was it if we have you're well aware that there are warning labels on alcohol and cigarettes. >> well, today the us surgeon general, once steady wants a similar warning on all things, social media dr. vivek murthy says, immediate action is needed to fight the threat social media poses to children not only have companies, not demonstrated that their platforms are safe for kids, but there's growing evidence of harm. so that's deeply concerning to me, not just as surgeon general, but as a parent myself. no. warning label with help parents to understand these risks, manual, parents don't know that those risks exist it's mega real is here to break it all down. listen, this is, this is a relatively new phenomenon. parents having a better understanding, fighting back now the government is trying to get involved. can you lay out why social media is so high risk for kids yeah. >> the surgeon general has been calling attention to this since at least last year when he put out an advisory about these associations with harm in today's opinion piece that he wrote calling for this warning, he cited a few data points. one is that kids on average are spending almost five hours per day on social media. he also cited a study published in jama psychiatry that found that kids who spent at least three hours per day on social media have double the risk of mental health problems like feeling symptoms of depression and anxiety he also set a data showing almost half of kids say that using social media makes them feel worse about their bodies. and so putting a warning label like this on social media would require an act of congress. but he's not only calling for legislators to stop there with that warning. he also wants to see increased regulation of these companies, including by trying to stop harassment of kids on these platforms to prevent the platforms from collecting sensitive data from children, restrict the use of features like auto play and require sharing data on health effects with the public if the companies collect these so that they can be independently audited by scientists this dana and talk about what parents and families can do. in the meantime, or even if this actually does go into effect yeah dr. sanjay gupta or colleague has done a lot of work on this, even with the surgeon general himself, some of the tips they've put out. there are to have the conversation with your kids. we've got to start there by talking about it. another is to establish tech free zones maybe before bedtime or around dinner time. but the phones and social media away. a third is to band together with other families so that you feel like you all have shared guidelines and your kids don't feel like you're only you're the only ones who are trying to put these limits into place. and of course, examining our own habits would be helpful as well, particularly around bedtime yeah oh, well, that's a whole different conversation which we can have offline thank you so much. appreciate it's such an important you every day, hurry. >> there'll be gone in a flash designer sales that up to 70% or so of gilt.com today today on inside politics, a convicted criminal who's only out for himself. that's how the biden campaign is labeling donald trump in a new ad as the current president, leans into attacking the former president for his 34 felony convictions. >> plus who wants to be a running mate. >> countless republicans they're buying to be on the ticket with donald trump, but only one contender was chosen as the favorite at a conservative conference this weekend. and the surgeon general is morning that the threat of social media to children is so dire. it needs a warning label just like cigarettes and alcohol. i'm dan a bash. let's go behind the head leinz and inside politics first step, the biden campaign is erin think it's first ads targeting donald trump's new status as a convicted felon. it's part of a 50 $50,000,000 ad campaign this month that team biden hopes will remind voters why they rejected trump four years ago cnn, arlette saenz is live at the white house. >> are arlette talk about the reporting that you have about the decision-making that went into this because we definitely heard both sides of the argument from lots of democrats about how heavily till into trump's convictions. yeah, this really does mark a significant escalation of president biden's attacks on trump's after months of really refraining from using his legal issues in any of their campaign argument since the campaign today is now really sharpening their attack on trump releasing this ad directly calling him a convicted criminal at a time when they have their eyes on that first debate in just ten days. now, with the biden campaign is doing with this ad is laying out all of the criminal cases that have faced four former president donald trump really leaning into the fact that they're using these legal issues as part of their argument to that that trump is unfit to serve in the office of the presidency take a listen to how this ad is trying to frame the election for voters in the courtroom, we see donald trump for who he is. >> he's been convicted of 34 felonies found liable for sexual assault and he committed financial fraud meanwhile, joe biden's been working and what the narrator goes on to say is that this is a choice between a convicted criminal who is looking out for himself and president biden, who was working for american families. >> now, this will be part of a $50,000,000 ad campaign in the month of june hitting television additions and internet streaming platforms. to make this argument directly to battleground state voters. and it's also coming on the heels of a high dollar fundraiser. president i didn't attended over the weekend with former president barak obama brought in 30 million. and that one night alone, that is the largest democratic fundraiser in us history. and the president and obama also use that really to try to make a stark warning about what a second trump presidency could hold with our eye on the debate as the two men prepare to face off for the first time since 2020. >> wow, the largest haul and history for democrats, i actually didn't know that that's really interesting. thank you so much. or lead. appreciate that. let's kick off this week with a panel of terrific reporters. cnn's glory border, seung min kim of the associated press, cnn, geoff zelenskyy, and cnns, alaimo, train happy monday, one and all. i'm geoff zelenskyy. i know you've been doing some according about just like i asked arlette about the decision-making process and the pros and cons that were debated internally about this ad campaign. >> look so much hand-wringing among democrats should president biden in the campaign go after the convictions? should he not focus on his own issues one democrats said, that's largely academic. the reality is, he needs to improve his standing and the summer they think is the time to try and keep reminding voters of that contrast. it clearly hasn't said in with them yet. so they're wondering and hoping that this ad by will do so, uh, one thing that biden campaign has is money because of that arlette just saying that the fundraising campaigns have had so they have the luxury of now please to have spending 50 million on this add it's pretty extraordinary when voters americans in the summer or doing other things, but they want to make this, the conversation going into the debate next week, and they want to frame this, but now we have a really extraordinary moment. >> both sides the trump sayyed and the biden campaign are both using his convictions to raise money and define this race on the trump side, they're saying it's part of an unfair prosecution, a revenge. they're out to get him. and by extension, voters and the biden campaign, this saying is unfit for office. so, so unusual that one on very thing is being used by both sides in different ways. >> i love when we get a geoff zheli boiling, boiling it all down moment you have been doing reporting with your sources inside the trump campaign. what are they saying about this new kidney? >> well, look, i think the strategy here is going to be that they're going to continue to argue that this is a sign that his conviction, but also all of the legal battles that donald trump is facing is assigned that democrats and the biden campaign are trying to prosecute their political opponent. we saw after this app is released, several of donald trump's top advisors, a spokesperson and criticizing this ad for just that on social media. now i'm also told when i talked to the trump campaign that when it comes to debate prep next week, they know that this is going to be a core potential question that will come up. and so they are preparing for that, even though donald trump's campaign says he doesn't need to do debate prep. he's not going to be doing any mock debate. we'll see if that happens or not. but i know that they are walking through some of the key issues and questions that they know. the former president might struggle with. and this is definitely one of those themes. i think is just, is a part of the biden campaign trying to remind voters who donald trump is and who he has been. and there's a lot of talk about trump amnesia voters have forgotten about donald trump and all the rest. and i think this is one way, and this is all pretty current stuff. of saying wait a minute, you can't just gloss over this stuff. here's the difference between these, these two fellows. and by the way character, the issue of character is making a big comeback in this campaign, not, not. we talked about competence a lot and all the rest. you know, we've heard jill biden talk about character. i think we're going to see a lot of surrogates talk about the character of these two men. and i think this is one way to do it at that's such an important point maybe to help put meat on the bone of that point or wow, maybe it's better to go into going a different direction as i play this sound byte what you were saying about this issue of donald trump's legal battles and how now the biden campaign is using it as a weapon. and the trump campaign has been and trump himself has been very much saying, imu today. there, they're going after me tomorrow. it's going to be you and they're taking it even a step further. seat. bannon was speaking at a right-wing conference in detroit over the weekend, one that trump attended. as well. listen to the way he framed the same topic november 5th is judgment day. >> january 20, 2025 is accountability de gonna get every single receipt? >> and to the fullest extension of the law, you are going to be investigated prosecuted in incarcerated. ladies and gentlemen, it's very simple. >> victory or death yeah i mean that very strong words there, but it's also kind of echoing the messaging that were coming out of donald trump himself. he talks about how it was taught when he's talking to voters, how i am your retribution. and that is what that is one of the things that the biden campaign is focusing on. you look at the ad that was released this morning. it talks about how funneled trump is out for himself while president biden has out there working for you. and that is among one of the many contrast that they want to make with president former president trump before the campaign, because i do think they're aware that president biden's own numbers are good right now, if you look historically, presidents, incumbent presidents who have had numbers as low as biden's just don't get reelected. so they know right now their main focus has to be pulling trump down. and in addition to lifting biden up, but really pulling trunk down and another way to look at this is argument is being made by both candidates in both campaigns that i'm the least bad option. i'm the best bad option. i mean, obviously neither of them would think that they are a bad option, but they see the polls and they see what i'm going to show you right now, which is what is now become known in political parlance as double haters. and that means that voters who are just not into either one of these candidates look at where we are right now. that applies to 220, 5% of people who talked to piu in an a recent poll. but just look at the difference. if you look historically between now with biden and trump then trump. and biden 13%. four years ago, hillary clinton, it's maybe at vs trump, it was maybe the closest that it's been as it is now. but i mean, we remember a lot of these very tough races, even mccain obama, 13%. you go back to 1988, a george hw bush and michael dukakis only 5% of people said that they were unhappy with their choices, 5% versus 25% right now, gloria, well they don't like them. i mean, they, they don't like either of these candidates they think they're both. well, particularly biden, i think he's too old they don't see any great ideas. they don't see any rescue. people are looking for a rescue thanks, haven't been going well. and a lot of people are full of grievance about it and they don't like donald trump's personality, but they think he's a fighter and they can accept joe biden's personality, but they think he's weak so it's not great choices out there for them and what do they do people are undecided. voters are like, well, maybe i'll give rfk jr. look, but there but what about them? do you like well, i don't really know. >> he's not the other two. yeah. for sure. i mean, one thing that has changed so much obviously since that 5% number 1988. yeah, it's just the partisan media and social media. if you go on tiktok, if you look at one highly edited a moment of biden or something that's negative, you are suddenly fed 100 of them. so just how we get information. but one thing i think talking to voters out there who are sort of exhausted by at all the question is, will they see this election as an important one to vote in? and that's what both sides are really trying to do. so it is still early in the sense of people are living their lives in the summer. and when i go out and ask butters, their opinions are like, why are you doing this now and like give me an at it. so i do think that double haters are not in unenthusiastic vote counts the same as an enthused because he asked you the question is do they go and vote? that's why ground game matters. that's why some republicans are worried about the trump campaign does not have one. so here we are in, trump is out there telling people i don't really need your vote. yeah. well, i don't i don't know that his campaigns thrilled about that help. yeah standby because it's coming up notice he happens spare the list of potential vice presidents. >> would anybody what trump needs in a vice president we need to have people who are supporting trump not tried to stab me in the back. >> it's very, very simple. we people who are supporting the agenda, fighting for the agenda, not fighting against it when the cameras are off panel is back, alaina, you have been doing reporting along with our colleagues about where donald trump's head is, where his campaign is. >> and i'll just put up on the screen again, all of the contenders who we are told have gotten paperwork in order to start the background process to start being considered, right? right. well, it's funny because these are the same names, i think all of these faces you see on the screen are surprising. we've been talking about them for months and months, however donald trump and his campaign consistently say he's going to make an announcement close to the convention. i'm told behind the scenes that's still the timeline as well but also when i talked his advisers, they say, look, the list is still fluctuating one day, j.d. vance might be the one that he's thinking about and asking questions at when he's at merrill logo or his club and ben minster saying, what do you think of him the thing that i think everyone has to keep in mind is that, and this is what they tell me. this is donald trump are talking about until he actually announces who he is going to pick. it's so hard to play this game. and we know from just covering these race or these campaigns in the past that it's always hard to predict in the horse race politics of vp steaks. however, with donald trump, it's even harder. yeah yeah. yeah. i remember covering the process, 2016, how will he or won't he he was up in the last minute when he picked mike pence. as you all come in, i want you to listen to another contender who is out over the weekend, byron donald's talking about him as a potential right that's obviously the toughest job, the biggest job, not just in our politics, but really frankly in the world. >> look, i think that i would have an ability to step in. them, actually be intelligent. i can sift through issues really willie, well, it's about judgments about logic streams it's about how you make decisions at the end of the day. do i believe in myself 100%? i do this audition process is like nothing. >> we've seen. it's also about loyalty, and that's what every one of these television interviews is also designed to do to see who can appear to be the most loyal or whatnot. 2, the former president. look, there's a reason that he talks about different people every day because part of it is to have them in the spotlight day after day. sometimes he travels with doug burger them the north dakota governor, sometimes these with the j.d. vance is he will be later this week. sometimes he's with tim scott, so it's just 2 a get a evolving interview process. it's sometimes before an event. so the reality is the end of the day, who can be the most loyal? it's donald trump, it's different than 2016 in a sense, because he doesn't need the piece of evangelical voters that mike pence brought him or that sort of the backing of conservatives. you need someone to be loyal. well, it's, it's loyal, but it's also i'm told i'm sure you're all told it's captain obvious here for anybody who's watched donald trump for more than five seconds, he wants somebody who's good on tv. >> and by the way, speaking of that, that ties that we showed of trump saying to the audience, maybe i'll just pick him. he was talking about byron donald's, so at any given moment, he's talking about different things but the difference also now is that whoever he picks is going to be the heir apparent the republican nomination for the right time. right. and he i don't know that trump thinks about that that much. he thinks about who's going to be loyal to me, who's going to look in this sounds ridiculous, but who's going to look like a vice president? i mean, he thought that mike pence with the white hair and all the rest look like a vice president and he thought that rex tiller person with his white hair looked like as secretary of state at central casting. so he is casting his vice president, obviously loyalty matters, et cetera. but when the two hold their arms up together, it's gotta be a picture that donald trump likes and you can't underestimate that. >> well, one of the people who it seems pretty clear, he thinks would look great in the picture with him is doug bergamo? >> yes. and on the loyalty question, burg, i'm i mean, j.d. vance was extremely critical of donald trump in 20 hey, 16, we can talk about that another time. but when it comes to bergen, he said originally that he wouldn't do business. >> doug burger was very wealthy from from business and he said that he wouldn't do business with donald trump. >> well, over the weekend, he changed his tune i wish every american could see him. the way katherine i've got to norm in the last six months because this guy is tireless. he's committed, he's smart, he's funny. he's nothing like he's portrayed in the press. and so if you asked me that same question today, i'd be like absolutely whitley, i would do business with them because i mean, think about how successfully been whether it's a whatever it is i mean, whether it's in tv real estate, politics all the things that he's done, we should be grateful that we've got someone who's willing with that kind of talent from the private sector that's willing to put themselves back into the presidential race again right? >> i mean, not only are these television interviews a chance to show their loyalty or 2, tout their own credentials. but it's a good clean up opportunity for some of these people who have had critical comments for about donald trump in the past, you're talking about j.d. vance, doug burger, even tom cotton yesterday, he sort of massage the differences between him and donald trump when it came to the certification of the 2020 election. so this is what donald trump likes to see. he likes to see his guys on television saying nice things about him and he'll absorb all that information until right up until i feel exactly how ruby i will say to you though, just with all from all my conversations with the trump campaign, you brought up, who could whoever he picks could potentially be the heir apparent. donald trump actually is thinking about that and my conversations and he said this publicly, so he wants someone who could potentially be a vice president god for he that's hose words. anything happens. but he also it is loyalty. he also really want someone that he really likes and that he thinks will not get in his way. and that's really what a lot of this comes down to when you hear donald trump, even in private conversations, he says, he doesn't think the vp is going to make a difference and who wins the election. so he wants someone who he likes and he can get along with what he had to leave the party had the most loyal vice president ever in my pants. remember mike pence saying we all stand on donald trump's broad shoulders and until until january all right, guys, we're going to take a quick break. >> very different story coming up vice president kamala harris will highlight hamas is depraved use of sexual violence as a weapon of war. i'll talk to a lawmaker who it's heard some of the democratic congresswoman debbie wasserman schultz of florida. >> thank you so much for being here. look amit story should make every human being six sexual violence. we know that sheryl sandberg documented those horrific story, so that the world could bear witness is out denialism and yet denialism still exists how do you combat that well, dana, thanks for shining a spotlight on this the primary way that we combat it is by doing exactly what you and i are doing here. >> and that's making sure that we can shine in a bright spotlight on the sexual and gender-based violence that hamas perpetrated on its victims on october 7th. and that very likely, we know are continuing to perpetrate that sexual violence and sheryl sandberg's film is searing but i'm really proud of the vice presidents. and the second gentlemen for using the white house is platform to make sure that the world knows that hamas used sexual violence and continues to use it as a weapon of war, is violating women. israeli wimmen, and i hosted a bhoram at the second element on capitol hill a few months ago. and the israeli police came and showed us videos that were taken by hamas terrorists themselves engaging in the kind of sexual violence that cheryl's film shows cutting off the breasts while raping their victims and first-hand accounts from first responders as well as others who israelis who were hiding from hamas terrorists and the denialism is outrageous yeah, aph two, we have to make sure that we knock it down and as we both said, the vice president and the second gentlemen, they're hosting an event at the white house. what what words? do you want to hear from the vice president during that event today well, i'm confident, don't hear what she and the second gentlemen have continued to stay and that is that there was sexual and gender-based violence that occurred on october 7th. >> hamas uses it as a weapon of war and that any organization either international or domestic, that denies it is essentially committing allowing the commission of acts of violence again and again, there can't be an exception for jewish victims. there can't be an exception for israelis the idea that it's me too, unless you're a jew is unacceptable. and when you have republicans and congress, like we did last week, defund the un population, population fund, which provides resources all over the world to combat sexual violence against women are across the globe. you can see where republican priorities are compared to president biden and vice president harris, who are using the administration's platform to lead in making sure that these crimes are not only not denied, but that there are consequences for them. >> just a couple of quick questions about things related to this coming up in the united states congress. and on the campaign trail first, you spent time in israel since october 70, met with prime minister netanyahu. he is scheduled to address congrats july 24th. he's made. every member has to make their own decision about whether to attend, but not only do i own my constituents that, but it's a relationship that we need to honor. >> and the war in the middle east is presenting a real challenge for the democratic party. it's playing out of the ballot box. this month, there is a primary contest in new york, the 16th district. they're incumbant jamaal bowman, who has called stories of israeli women that hamas raped, quote propaganda. he's being challenged by george latimer, who says he is unabashedly pro israel. again, this is a democratic primary. have you made a decision? are you going to weigh in and support one or the other? >> well, i'll say about that race is that it is terribly, terribly unacceptable that the rhetoric that jamaal bowman is used. ease, engaged in anti-semitic rhetoric. he has the entire eight months until just last week when it was clear polling was problematic for him finally condemned the hamas perpetrated against israelis on october 7 the he is engaged in conduct unbecoming of a member of congress, and it's terribly unfortunate. and his constituents will have to decide whether they want to return him to the congress. >> yeah, and he also i'll walk back the denialism later of the sexual assault that went on on october 7. but it sounds like not but you're stopping short of endorsing his opponent this is erased in new york and i generally don't get involved in congressional races outside of my home state only occasionally. >> i'm no longer the chair of the dnc, so i'm staying focused on florida and among young voters by winning a bigger share of older voters around geoff zelenskyy. here now, but he recently went to this swing state of michigan to take a look at the outreach and talk to those voters himself at 86, does he ferris spends no time worrying about the ages of the oldest american presidential candidates for those who do this loyal president i didn't supporter has this to say about donald trump? >> he's way less capable in the brain area in the brain area delicate way to put it as trump turns 78 on friday, just three years younger than biden's at one age is an unmistakable part of the race. but the biden campaign is suddenly embracing it in a different way. >> i'm a senior and i vote turning to ferriss and other seniors to build a critical piece of this coalition so i love when you go out and do these stories obviously, my panel is back here. >> i want to play one other soundbite from a different voter who you talk to. her name is linda van weird in also of michigan let's listen to what she said a lot of people have said biden's old. >> yes, he is old, but he's not insane and he has the experience and the knowledge that we need and he is the man for this particular position at this time i just want to say whatever linda's buying are eating, i want some she does not look like a senior anyway, back to the content of what she was saying. well, look, one of the things is really interesting about this. i mean, every four years, obviously the ages of voters changed. so now baby boomers make up the vast majority of senior voters, some seven an then ten seniors are baby boomers that did not that was not the case in 2008 when barak obama was on the ballot, for example. so that's one of the dynamics there. but look, it's been nearly a quarter century since al gore ran in 2000, that a democratic candidate has won the seat in your vote. the reason the biden campaign is going after them so much, it's a part of their coalition that actually has stuck with him. younger voters have been a problem. voters of color have been a huge challenge for him. but one of the things is they pay more attention to the news. they're focused more on history the democracy argument of resonates more with them protecting medicare fair is important on and on. so that is why the biden campaign last week launch day seniors for harrison biden and we went out to michigan to have conversations with some of these look, it's not a monolith. of course, but there absolutely is a an interesting conversation there and voters of the president's age had a lot of interesting things to say about his age, saying, look, they it's a contrast between trump and biden and almost all of them brought up trump's age. there's of course, feature and 78 last friday page was everything was going to say they're both seniors. and just so people understand how important of a voting block this is. i want you to look at the 2020 exit polls and the key swing states and how big of a share in pennsylvania, 28% of the voters were 65 and older, michigan, 30 wisconsin, 26 arizona, 31 nevada, 30, giorgia, which that's only 19, but if you look at the blue wall right and i just looked at a market university paul, because the issue one big issue for senior voters is of course, medicare and social security and in that poll, 47% of them said biden would do a better job saving medicare and social security compared to its 35% or something for trump. that's a big margin and that, you know, that you have to pay attention to because the democrats are going to talk about how republicans wanted to reduce medicare and social security. and you can't get away from that issue. no matter remember, biden thomas, them they weren't going to reduce it at the state of the union but it is a huge issue for those voters. and i don't know how republicans get around it. >> i just want to emphasize what you just brought up, which is where seniors have voted, how they voted party y's over the past more than half a century, if you look at this, it really was the only democrats who have one seniors, bill clinton twice, and then al gore in 2000 right? right. it's really remarkable and it's not only president biden's promised to protect medicare and we'll just security, but they're also selling what they have already done in president biden's terms, some of them more popular initiatives that the white house talks about is capping the insulin let's cost, well, that's for medicare beneficiaries. so these seniors know that this is a president that has already done things that are impacting their lives directly right now. and again, the biden campaign and geoff alluded to this dividing campaigns old theory of the case is that if and when people know about the dangers of trump, they will ultimately pull the lever for biden will seniors are much more likely to be paying attention to the news they have the memory of the trump years. so that's why right now the biden campaign loves the senior narrative and they're having a lot of fun with it, right? >> now all right. everybody standby because still had social media could come with a warning label why the surgeon you're well aware that there are warning labels on alcohol and cigarettes. >> well, today the us surgeon general, once steady wants a similar warning on all things, social media dr. vivek murthy says, immediate action is needed to fight the threat social media poses to children not only have companies, not demonstrated that their platforms are safe for kids, but there's growing evidence of harm. so that's deeply concerning to me, not just as surgeon general, but as a parent myself. no. warning label with help parents to understand these risks, manual, parents don't know that those risks exist it's mega real is here to break it all down. listen, this is, this is a relatively new phenomenon. parents having a better understanding, fighting back now the government is trying to get involved. can you lay out why social media is so high risk for kids yeah. >> the surgeon general has been calling attention to this since at least last year when he put out an advisory about these associations with harm in today's opinion piece that he wrote calling for this warning, he cited a few data points. one is that kids on average are spending almost five hours per day on social media. he also cited a study published in jama psychiatry that found that kids who spent at least three hours per day on social media have double the risk of mental health problems like feeling symptoms of depression and anxiety he also set a data showing almost half of kids say that using social media makes them feel worse about their bodies. and so putting a warning label like this on social media would require an act of congress. but he's not only calling for legislators to stop there with that warning. he also wants to see increased regulation of these companies, including by trying to stop harassment of kids on these platforms to prevent the platforms from collecting sensitive data from children, restrict the use of features like auto play and require sharing data on health effects with the public if the companies collect these so that they can be independently audited by scientists this dana and talk about what parents and families can do. in the meantime, or even if this actually does go into effect yeah dr. sanjay gupta or colleague has done a lot of work on this, even with the surgeon general himself, some of the tips they've put out. there are to have the conversation with your kids. we've got to start there by talking about it. another is to establish tech free zones maybe before bedtime or around dinner time. but the phones and social media away. a third is to band together with other families so that you feel like you all have shared guidelines and your kids don't feel like you're only you're the only ones who are trying to put these limits into place. and of course, examining our own habits would be helpful as well, particularly around bedtime yeah oh, well, that's a whole different conversation which we can have offline thank you so much. appreciate it's such an important
